Week 33 Music List

Dan Black - 'U + Me ='
Michael Jackson - 'Thriller'
Spank Rock - 'Sweet Talk'
Pixie Lott - 'Boys And Girls'
Katy B - 'Katy On A Mission'
John Matthias - 'Stockwell Road'
Mark Ronson and the Business Intl. - 'The Bike Song'
McFly - 'Party Girl'
Inna - 'Amazing'
DJ Shadow - 'Giving Up The Ghost'
Sugababes - 'Freak Like Me'
The Prodigy - 'Omen'
Plan B - 'She Said (Shy FX Remix)'
The Pretty Reckless - 'Miss Nothing'
The Kills - 'Pull A U'

This songlist may start and end with textspeak, of the kind which will make your English teacher explode, but wedged between is a collection of musical wonders which people of any age can enjoy. A list which takes in the King of Pop at his peak, the three queens of frostypop at their peak, and a blonde man getting a curly-haired man to sing a song about a bike, on a peak (probably).

And those aren't even the best songs on the list - in my humble opinion. How about that strange John Matthias, with his dark, wheezy pub piano and stretchy ghost noises? Unusual, eh? And that Pretty Reckless song is a direct and surly challenge to anyone listening. It says "forget me at your peril, I can very easily bite your face off." Frankly, they had me at the first chorus.

One interesting thing which has arisen from making this week's Spotify playlist - it is here, and it is mighty - is that there isn't a version of Katy B's 'Katy On A Mission' on Spotify which is sung by Katy herself. But there are SIXTEEN other versions. Some covers and some instrumentals for karaoke purposes. Isn't technology strange sometimes?

Now, I'm going to do what I normally do and pick a personal favourite. But I'm aware it's going to be a controversial choice if you weigh it up against, say, Michael Jackson. But I've got to go with my heart on this. There is just something about 'Boys And Girls' by Pixie Lott which feels like the best bit of a spectacularly good party, or walking down the street with all of your friends, heading for something amazing. Even the Pretty Reckless have to bow down to Pixie's power, on this song at least.

OK, gimme your faves, and pronto!

On the eve of Halloween itself both Vicki and I are in the throws of putting together last-minute Halloween costumes… but we've still got time to give you a bit of a Cut Halloween treat. Not only is this weeks full episode now available to watch on iplayer… but Vicki also had an eerie chat with one of the Cut cast members and we thought you'd all enjoy it.

We'd heard rumours that more than a few of you think Luke looks a bit like a certain Twilight character… yes, of course we're talking about Jacob Black. But as everyone knows Jacob's also a werewolf - and if Luke is Jacob Black then we need to know if there's a werewolf in the Cut cast! So, Vicki did a bit of investigation…

Which was your favourite costume?

Isla Isla | 11:42 UK time, Friday, 29 October 2010

Comments

How fantastic did all the characters look in their Halloween costumes in yesterday's episode? My favourite was definitely Noah, although Elliott looked very smooth with his gelled-back hair. But poor Frankie… in her own words, her costume just didn't make any sense without Cam. She still looked great though. Which was your favourite outift? Perhaps you got some inspiration for your own costume if you're dressing up this weekend.

The Halloween party was so much fun to film, and we went backstage to take some photos for you and you can check them out now in the pictures gallery

The Halloween fun continues in this afternoon's episode, so make sure you don't miss it.

You're def. gonna want to tune into The Cut today right here at 5:10pm for two reasons...

1. A familiar face returns to The Cut today. Clue: She's beautiful, but she's got a thorny side to her.

2. A familiar face starts at The Cut today. Clue: In real life his name's not Dave, but he is a right laugh.

Any guesses??

Week 32 Music List

Comments

Dan Black - 'U + Me'
Chikinki - 'Assassinator 13'
Kassidy - 'Night In The Box'
Massive Attack - 'Teardrop'
Admiral Fallow - 'Subbuteo' (via BBC Introducing)
The Neil Richardson Orchestra - 'The Riviera Affair'
Simple Kid - 'Serotonin'
Hotdjour - 'I Stand Alone' (via BBC Introducing)
Thomas Tantrum - 'Rage Against The Tantrum'
Air - 'Playground Love'
Aaron Negus - 'In Her Eyes' (via BBC Introducing)
Quincy Jones - 'Soul Bossa Nova'
Young Knives - 'Current of the River'
Air - 'Sexy Boy'
The Streets - 'Dry Your Eyes'
Justin Timberlake ft. Timberland - 'SexyBack'
Pizzicato 5 - 'Baby Love Child'
Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg - 'Je T'aime (Moi Non Plus)'
Beck - 'Lonesome Tears'
Marvin Gaye - 'Lets Get It On'

Wow...just, wow.

Look at all this lot. Just look at it! What an enormous list of astonishing songs! How is any sane human supposed to make a choice between the heartbreak of 'Dry Your Eyes', the raw sauce of 'SexyBack' or the Austin Powers theme music (Quincy Jones, in case you weren't sure)?

And that's before you even think about 'Teardrop', which is one of the most stunning, heartsparkly songs of the past 20 years. Or the Young Knives, who are one of those genius unsung bands that will be close to national treasure status, in a few years. In fact, every single one of these songs deserves a special pat on the head, a teary hug, and maybe even a back rub. But it's my job to pick a favourite, so pick a favourite I will.

Being an underdog kind of person, I'm going for 'Rage Against The Tantrum' by Thomas Tantrum. Just because it's great and it has a funny title and the band's name is amazing. That's all the excuse I need. What's your fave?

Here is the extra long Spotify version. Pace yourselves!

Week 31 Music List

Comments

The Cure - 'Harold and Joe'
La Roux - 'Quicksand'
Grant Taylor Melin - 'Laid My Tracks' (from BBC Introducing)
Massive Attack - 'Black Milk'
Arcade Fire - 'City With No Children'
Broken Bells - 'The High Road'
Slider ft. Bluey Robinson - 'Little' (from BBC Introducing)
Prince and the New Power Generation - 'Gett Off'
Soulsavers - 'Ask The Dust'
Marvin Gaye - 'Let's Get It On'
Eels - 'Agony'
Smashing Pumpkins - 'Spaceboy'

We've seen a fair few mood-swings over the last week of the show, and these are more than reflected in this week's haul of musical astonishments. How else could you link together the squealing synthpop of La Roux with the twinkling hurt of Eels? Or the sleazy funk of Marvin Gaye with the doomed romance of Broken Bells?

Well OK, you could just really like all of these songs, and that would be fine too.

Special mention must go to Smashing Pumpkins this week. 'Spaceboy' is one of those brittle masterpieces which seems to fall over itself, and billow around, but holds itself together beautifully using nothing but floppy willpower. At the other end of the scale is Prince's 'Gett Off', which could not be more pneumatic and forceful if it was a giant robot attempting to destroy a major city.

Here's the Spotify playlist. Why not try getting your swagger on to the funky bits. It will do you the world of good.

What's your favourite? Don't worry if you can't choose. Just blame those pesky mood-swings and enjoy the ride.

Sharing the common wealth...

Hello!

Well hopefully everyone got through the trauma of no Cut last week without any serious lasting side-effects.

*shakes fist at the Commonwealth Games*

The good news is that this terrible void in all of our lives has been filled with not one, but TWO episodes this week.

Here's the first one on iPlayer

and here is the second.

It's an impressive feat, isn't it? Worthy of a gold medal for everyone involved. In many ways, The Cut is like the Tom Daley of quality online drama (which is also on TV). Not ways which are connected to being buff or diving, but still.

Speaking of TV, it's business as usual next week. All of the single episodes will appear here on the blog at 5:10pm, and the Saturday omnibus - just the one this time - will be on BBC2 at 12:00 midday.

Right, synchronise calendars: three, two, one...GO!

Week 30 Music List

Post categories:

Fraser McAlpine | 18:00 UK time, Sunday, 10 October 2010

Comments

The Pretty Reckless - 'Make Me Wanna Die'
Camera Obscura - 'The Sweetest Thing DJ Krush feat Ken Shima - 'Stormy Cloud'
Gossip - 'Pop Goes the World'
Metric - 'Gold, Guns, Girls Goldfrapp - 'Ride a White Horse'
Camera Obscura - 'French Navy'
Jim Kroft - 'Guess That's What The Gods Say'
Mogwai - 'Local Authority'
Friendly Fires - 'Skeleton Boy'
Broken Windows - 'Japanese Government Railways' (from BBC Introducing)
Tegan & Sara - 'Call It Off'
Morning Runner - 'Best For You'
Mark Ronson and the Business International - 'Bang Bang Bang'

Shhh! Don't move! Don't dance! Don't even smile! This week's Cut selection comes from a very indie kind of place, and as we all know, when you're in the indie zone, cool is EVERYTHING.

Special indie applause must go to the wondrous Camera Obscura, who are so twinkly and beautiful that they've managed to get TWO of their songs into the show, despite having a name which basically says they'd like to hide the equipment we use to make the show. I mean, how rude!

Then there's the equally astonishing Tegan and Sara. If you've not seen these two in action, picture the two coolest girls in your school - that's COOL, not POPULAR - and then equip them with razor-sharp tongues and a couple of guitars. Yup, it's an intimidating experience all round, not unlike picking a fight with a very sarcastic alligator.

But this week's ultimate favourite is Mark Ronson, for no other reason that it's probably the best pop single of the entire year. I'm not even kidding.

Here's the Spotify link, so you have a perfect soundtrack while you get your indie on.

And now, tell me YOUR favorites!

Episode 30... online tomorrow

Post categories:

Vicki Vicki | 12:00 UK time, Saturday, 9 October 2010

Comments

Hey guys,

Hope you've all been enjoying the interactive episode of The Cut? And come on, own up, who's managed to burn the toast?? I know Isla and I certainly have on more than one occasion (you think we'd learn our lesson first time round).

Anyways, as you all well know we didn't have episode 30 online this week, so we're putting it up tomorrow instead. To explain a bit more I've put this FAQ together, although actually, these questions haven't actually been asked yet, so it's more of a SATQWHBAYBTWTMABQU ('Some Answers To Questions We Haven't Been Asked Yet But That We Thought Might Actually Be Quite Useful').

When can I watch episode 30?
Sunday, 10th October at 5:10pm right here on this blog.

Will all the videos for episode 30 be up on one go?
No, the first five minutes will go up at 5:10 and then five minutes after that the next video will go up, then the next one five minutes after that and so on…You know, so it's like a real live party experience. Or something.

Why are you calling it a party?
Because we don't normally show episodes on a Sunday, so it's kind of exciting. Plus there's a couple of surprises in store for you, so you're gonna want to be here.

What if I'm not in at 5:10pm?
Don't worry, we'll leave the episodes and all the party magic online for you to catch up with.

When will I get to see Episode 31?
The Cut returns to normal from Monday, October 11th, with a 5 minute video going up every day at 5:10 on the website. There's also a special double bill of episode 30 and 31 on BBC Two, 16th October from 12pm.

Lastly, why is there a hamster holding a tiny cake on the party invite?
Because a party is not a party without a tiny party hamster holding a tiny party cake. Obviously.

Hope this helps! x

You're invited to...

Yep, that's right. The Cut interactive episode has launched! Today should totally go down in history as 'Interactive Wednesday'… or, err, you know. Something slightly more catchy.

Get involved now and decide what happens on Catherine's first day at Radio One, plus look out for cameos from McFly, Greg James, Huw Stephens, Tim Westwood and some familiar faces from The Cut… Also, that security guard at the beginning is the REAL RADIO ONE SECURITY GUARD. Not an actor. I know. Immense.

Check it out here - www.facebook.com/bbcthecut and watch out for it on our YouTube...

Don't forget to let us know what you think here on the blog, or on facebook, or wherever really...

Lastly, it's been a hard week without The Cut on our screens, but we're officially HALF WAY THERE cos this Sunday you're invited to join me for a bit of sneak preview screening of the WHOLE of episode 30! Bring popcorn, chocolate and fizzy pop (as my mum's friend Sheila would call it) because it's going to be pretty sweeting epic.

A new Cut special episode

We hope you’re not missing The Cut TOO much this week… but we have got something special coming very soon to help ease the pain. If anyone was listening intently to the cast message last week (I’m sure many of you were, especially after your names were mentioned) Deborah (aka Catherine) hinted at something that’s happening this week, involving her.

Very cryptic indeed Deborah, well, we can now share with you that tomorrow afternoon a new interactive Cut special episode will be launching on facebook. Did you ever wonder what it was like on Catherine’s first day inside BBC Radio One on work experience? Well, now you’ll be able to find out, as the episode is based inside the famous walls of Radio One, and you’ll get to see inside the radio studios, plus see a whole selection of famous faces, from Westwood to McFly. I know… McFly!

We’ll tell you more about it tomorrow and include a link for you all to play, but for now we’ve taken a couple of screen grabs for you to have a sneak preview.

Week 29 Music List

Comments

Capella Istropolitana & Richard Edlinger - Albinoni Adagio in G Minor
Cat Power - 'Werewolf'
Delphic - 'This Momentary'
Vampire Weekend - 'White Sky'
The Drums - 'Submarine'
Baikonour - 'Lick Lokoum'
Betty & The Werewolves - 'Paper Thin'
The Drums - 'Let's go Surfing'
Gravenhurst - 'The Diver'

Welcome back to the Sunday roundup of Cut music. Here's where you can find out which songs have accompanied the week's action, and have a bit of a thought about which one you love the best. It's a voyage of discovery for all of us.

With that in mind, I'm gonna throw my hat in the ring and plump for the weirdest song of the week. Cat Power's 'Werewolf' scores massively in my mind - not least for conjuring up the vivid mental image of an actual werewolf which is powered by cats. But the one piece of music which has really bent my head this week is Baikonour's 'Lick Lokoum'.

What IS it? I can hear hammered dulcimers, and weird whooshy synths, and something that sounds like a stick running across the spokes in a bicyle wheel. It's not even really a SONG, as such, just a drone and some wibbling, but by GOLLY is it distracting.

Here's the Spotify playlist, please, in tribute to The Drums, roll up the bottoms of your jeans, and put on some white sports socks before listening. It's a style thing.

Dear Cutlets,

Hope you've enjoyed the first week of Series Three! Unfortunately, this blog comes with a bit of bad news. Due to the commonwealth games being on BBC Two next Saturday (9th October), BBC Switch is off air - which means The Cut is too.

Due to all sorts of tricky-legal-rights-type problems, we can't show Week Two online next week (trust me, we've tried our best). We're really sorry; we know it's a bit poo.

However, as a way of saying sorry, we're going to put up all five episodes of week two online on Sunday 10th October (technically a week early), plus we got some familiar faces to record this message for a few of you regulars...

Sorry again guys, but we promise we've got lots to keep you entertained next week.
