Is Danny Boyle one of Britain's most interesting directors?
On Tuesday the director of Slumdog Millionaire talks to The Culture Show about his new film, set in Mumbai. As part of the feature Danny Boyle appears in front of an invited audience to answer their questions about the film. Their reactions are very interesting. If you'd like to see some extra footage from Danny and Mark's chat in the pub before the film you can watch it here.
Danny Boyle has shown his ability to hop from genre to genre, making films including Trainspotting and 28 Days Later... I haven't seen Slumdog yet, but from the enthusiastic reviews I'm hearing around the office it appears that Boyle has managed what he achieves in his best films - making something that is both entertaining and moving but also artistically interesting. That doesn't mean, however, that I forgive him for A Life Less Ordinary. Please God, may I never have to watch Ewan McGregor in another musical.
What do you think of Danny Boyle's films and how would you say he compares to other British directors?

Yes, he most certainly is. I was at university with him and he was always a good laugh as well as being one of the brightest and most creative students. He's also a cracking actor as well as a director. He played opposite me in "Saved" - a very unselfish actor. It was a great experience. I'm really pleased he's having such great success. He deserves it.Rosemary Hill

How disappointing that Mark Kermode and Danny Boyle made no reference during their interview, to the inspirational Author Vikas Swarup. Worse still, they spoke as though Danny Boyle or the writer of the screenplay were the originators of the Slumdog Millionaire story.

That's a good point, the film is based on a book, but from what I've read Danny Boyle has said that the film is actually quite different from the book. I think that he stresses the scriptwriter rather than the author of the original novel so people don't expect a really faithful adaptation.
I wouldn't worry, however, most things I've seen online mention that the film is based on Q&A by Vikas Swarup, so I think he's getting credit.

I'm afraid not. Couldn't agree more with the lady who panned Slumdog at the end of the Culture Show. Great packaging of a very weak formulaic and cheesy yarn. Best picture of the year - never. Battersea Posh

Danny did an excellent job of slum dog, what a journey that was.
I agree about Ewan , singing in A Life Less Ordinary, it was hard to watch.
I saw Danny on TV recently along side Elbow getting recognition for being from Bury, we was very humble and down to earth.
