How do you rate Baz Luhrmann as a director?

Post categories:

This week Mark Kermode goes behind the scenes in Sydney as the director of Australia finishes his multi-million dollar epic. What do you think of Baz Luhrmann's previous films: Strictly Ballroom, Romeo + Juliet and Moulin Rouge? Are you entranced by his visual imagination, absorbed by the pace and warmth of his films, or does his work leave you cold?

He is currently the bravest and most interesting mainstream director.

Yes I'm a fan (!) And actually admire the fact that when I went to see Moulin Rouge half of us were on our feet clapping the other half booing.

The key thing is it's a reponse!!!

I have to admit that before I watched the special I felt equivocal about Baz Luhrmann's work. I'd thought that Strictly Ballroom was good fun and liked what he did with Romeo and Juliet, but found Moulin Rouge rather hollow. Having seen the special, I have more of an appreciation of Luhrmann's single-mindedness and creativity. I think that you're right that the fact that he polarises opinion suggests he's onto something!

Did you feel that the show did him justice?

I have been a huge fan of Baz Luhrmann for a very long time. I have been running my Baz Luhrmann fansite, Baz the Great, for over 6 years now and I have followed the making of Australia from day 1. It's been an incredible journey and one that has enabled me to learn so much more about Baz. I feel that Baz's works are best enjoyed if you understand the man himself, and this show has enabled people to do exactly that.

If anyone knows whether or not this show will be released on DVD in the future, please let me know!

    Hi Vanessa

I'm afraid that there are no plans to release the special on DVD, which is a shame. Such decisions are made by BBC Worldwide (the commercial arm of the BBC) rather than programme makers. You never know, at some point they may license the programme to Australian TV.
