Local Hero - Kermode Speaks
We're back on air tonight, with a programme packed with such treats as Mark's trip to the village where Bill Forsyth filmed Local Hero 25 years ago (in the company of the director himself), an interview with Grace Jones and Andrew Graham Dixon on why we should keep a pair of Titian paintings from being sold on the open market. Mr Kermode has written a piece for BBC News Online about Local Hero and mentions that he was captured on film playing the bagpipes. Did it make the final cut? You'll have to watch tonight's programme to find out.

We've also got some get shots taken while our Local Hero item was filmed, by the cameraman Rick Walker, in the Culture Show Flickr group. If you've been taking photos of cultural events you've been at recently then feel free to submit them to the group - we're keen to see what you've been up to (subject the usual taste and decency guidelines). Do let us know what you think of tonight's show.
BTW, we are relaunching our homepage today, so although the banner says that The Culture Show Uncut is on Thursday, by later today it will say Friday. Apologies for any confusion.

I share Mark's love of the film but am curious as to which bar they were in? According to my slightly obsessive quest for facts of anything "Local Hero" related "The bar of the Lochailort Inn was used as the bar of the Macaskill Arms, the hotel in Local Hero. It has been rebuilt following a fire and no longer looks the same as it did in the movie" according to

The bar used is on the other side of Scotland near the beach scenes.

What a beautiful piece of television. A warm and much deserved tribute to one of the best films ever made in Scotland by a Scottish director. Well done to everyone involved, thank you

Hi AFarrell4PM
I've consulted with the director of the Local Hero item and he says the following:
"The bar pictured is the Ship Inn in Banff, 10 miles from Pennan - it provided the location for the interior pub shots in Local Hero.
I think the Lochailort was used as the interiors of the restaurant scenes from the McAskill Arms for the film. This is backed up by the fact Burt Lancaster features in one of those sequences but he was never on location on the east coast near Pennan.
Also of interest is the fact that Happer's office in Houston was actually filmed on a set in converted whiskey distillery near Fort William."
Hope this all makes sense. I believe I introduced some confusion by describing the pub in the picture as being in Pennan, when it is in fact outside it. I've now corrected this in the caption above.
Cheers
Ellen
