China Special

Post categories:

Ellen West - web producer | 17:13 UK time, Monday, 4 August 2008

This is the last week of the current run before we shift focus to coverage of the Edinburgh Festival, and to round off the series we are going really global. Tomorrow night we look at a special musical project in Jerusalem, go behind the scenes with Metallica in Norway and get rare access to Florence's Vasari Corridor. Tonight, however, we travel to Shanghai and Beijing in the company of Miranda Sawyer and Tom Dyckhoff, to look at the latest developments in the arts. What do you think of the programme? Has it introduced you to artists and writers you weren't familiar with? We've packed a lot into an hour, but do send us your thoughts on what else you think is worth watching out for.

    Hi,

I think that you have already accepted that there was a lot crammed into the china special. Obviously an hour isn't sufficient time to give a comprehensive insight into Chinese culture. All the more reason to prepare with thorough research on the Arts scene before you go there.

A couple of points I like to make on this:

I think that after the producers have reviewed this program they would accept that it missed the mark in terms of being informative and entertaining. I've no desire to be pompous (maybe I am but don't know it), but this show informed us of little and did not even scratch the surface of the topics discussed, very frustrating. You sent someone (Miranda Sawer) poorly prepared with only her western mindset and so overawed by her visit that she failed to gain or convey any meaningful insight into the Chinese Arts scene.

I'm sorry but I think it was an opportunity missed.

    Best Regards

In response to est2_vine's query about the piece of music, the Butterfly Lovers Concerto was composed by He Zhan Hao (also written as He Zhan-Hao and He Zhanhao)and if you search for a CD online a few versions appear.

...please can someone tell me the name of the female Mongolian/Chinese singer who appeared on the programme? If you have information or know her URL, that would be great. The clip was fantastic, but I forgot her name....we are unable to download the show on this side of the pond....Cheers!

Sorry for the wait in getting back to you, in answer to the questions above:

The DJ is called B6. I'm not sure which club was featured, but I believe he sometimes works in the Castle Bar in Nanjing. There's an article about him here.

The Mongolian/Chinese singer iss Sa Ding Ding.

The photographer iss Maleonn. His website is in Mandarin, but you get a good selection of pictures.

    Hello there!
I was wondering if anyone could tell me the names of the various chinese music artists featured in a short video reel that was shown before Sa Ding Ding's part, i think there were about four or five, and I can't remember any of them for the life of me.
They appeared to be taken from the actual music videos by the artists, but I'm not sure.
