Fron Male Voice Choir win Busking Challenge

Post categories:

It does seem a little unfair to say this when we have a couple of busks yet to come on the show before the end of the series, but we can't believe that anyone will be able to beat the incredible total achieved by the Fron Male Voice Choir. The challenge has been going since October 2007 and the contenders have included Supergrass, Moby, the Charlatans, Roisin Murphy, Frank Black of The Pixies - and still the choir have triumphed! How did you rate their performance? Would you have put your money in the hat? Are you sorry to see the end of the challenge? You can watch the full performance here.

A bit of an unfair competition if truth be told. The clue to the choir's success may lie in the fact that it consists of a large number of men with resoundingly good voices, all well turned out, and put on the tourist laden streets of Chester. Compare them with the scruffy, rusty sounding output of most of the bands, most of whom were unrecognisable to all but ardent fans. The choir didn't need to be recognised - their talent shone through!

As I remember, when busking the proceeds were shared equally between whoever was performing. Surely a fairer way to decide who wins the 'league' would be to divide the cash by the number of participants.
You might then find that the 'scruffy, rusty sounding output' of Supergrass may be winning. (I haven't done the maths so who knows)

The tone of comments towards jazz on this show leaves much to be desired. On the feature on Jazz Jamaica we were subjected to a sarcastic tone saying that "as it's jazz everyone has to have a solo" and "nice" - I enjoyed The Fast show too, but on a supposedly open minded cultural programme the genre deserves to be treated with a bit more respect. In the feature on Cy Twombley a credible comparison with improvised music was dismissed by Kermode stating that he didn't like jazz. No attempt was made to pursue the analogy - if the "punter's view" is one of hostility, then that seems to be the bottom line.
