How to Cope With Death
How do you argue with the grim reaper? It's a question that has informed works from A Matter of Life and Death and The Seventh Seal to Final Destination and Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey. In tonight's regular animation slot we showcase the technique used by one elderly lady in a great short by Ignacio Ferreras. You can watch a clip now. The film is produced by Tandem Films, the company behind the Simon's Cat animations (directed by Simon Tofield). We may be premiering an animation from Tandem on a future show - more details when we have everything confirmed.
If you enjoy death-related animation you should have a look at the work of Don Hertzfeldt, the founder of Bitter Films. Hertzfeldt specialises in darkly comic tales of extreme allergic reactions and murderous balloons. If you are one of the 1.7 million people to have watched the Oscar-nominated Rejected on YouTube then you will know what I'm talking about. Otherwise, prepare yourself for a fascinating and frightening experience. Why haven't I linked to any of Don Hertfeldt's films here? Their creator is famously non-plussed by the quality of his films online and he strongly disapproves of pirated versions.
We'll have the team from Holbooks Films in the studio for a chat next Friday, after showing one of their animated shorts.

Great show I'll be watching more as they come. I especially like the animation segment. I love animation, especially Japanese animation , or anime. I sincerely hope you will add some anime to the programme. The BFI, Southbank is doing another "anime weekend" on the 20-22 of June. They'll be screening:
- Paprika
- 5 Centimetres Per Second,
- The Girl who Leapt Through Time
- Vexille
- Appleseed Ex Machina,
- The Place Promised in our Early Days
- Tekkonkinkreet.
With a special guest of Makoto Shinkai, who now lives in London. He wrote and produced "5cm Per Second" and "The Place Promised" He is touted as the new "Miyazaki" in the anime world. Please check it out, and get him on your show if you can.

The fight scene in How to Cope With Death is particularly inspiring at the moment as I have been visiting someone in hospital who is fighting for her life.

Thanks for mentioning the BFI anime programme Mohawk52, I'll definitely be checking some of it out.
I went to a couple of things in the anime round-up in 2006 and particularly enjoyed Tokyo Godfathers.
