Darrell has had many listeners’ sympathy up till now but attempting to steal from the Poppy Appeal tin could prove to be his downfall. Can he sink any lower - and should Saint Shula stand by him or take her good Samaritan act elsewhere? Meanwhile, Eddie comes in for a bit of praise and Kenton could do with a few lessons in tact.
Here’s my pick of online discussions between 24 and 30 October 2013
Drowning his sorrows and spooking Shula’s horse could be a couple of transgressions too far for Darrell as many listeners’ patience was tested by his behaviour, though some still sympathise with his plight.
Ok. I felt sorry for Darrell once but I'm rapidly losing patience #thearchers (@monx61 on Twitter)
Darrell just needs to Man Up!!! (Pete Cunningham on Archers Addicts Facebook group)
Darrell just damned by The Whole Of Twitter there. #TheArchers (@Wimblebear on Twitter)
@BBCTheArchers Darrell ..you will never get to St Shula's heaven if you nick money (@intriguingme on Twitter)
I think that deep down he's a really nice bloke, just a really weak one too, who needs to man up a bit and take responsibility for himself a bit better. (Pam Tonothy on Archers Addicts Facebook group)
I think Darrell may be hitting bottom soon. Will he go splat at the bottom or pop back up? I'm getting pretty mad at him just now, but maybe there is hope. (Joyce L Roderick on Archers Addicts Facebook group)
#TheArchers Caught up. Poor, poor Darryl. I know he's irritating/self-defeating but I know someone just like him. Script could have been his (@lomelindi12 on Twitter)
#thearchers Suspect we've all known a Daryll at some point in our lives. Great characterisation of a man on total self-destruct. (@feistyoakcake on Twitter)
I've known people in the same situation as Darrell. It's pretty realistic. #thearchers (@markalannixon on Twitter)
#thearchers doing #mentalhealth and #welfare, good stuff... #poordarrel (@vickipper on Twitter)
There’s a similar divide in opinion about Shula: is she right to try and help Darrell or is this a job for professionals?
I applaud Shula’s caring and concern and compassion and effort HOWEVER she needs quite frankly to find a way to get him professional help and out of her home...at this point he only cares about himself of he realizes it or not is not important...he is a risk to EVERYBODY'S safety.... (Kimberly Linn Jacobs on Archers Addicts Facebook group)
With all respect to her for trying so hard, Shula cannot, and should not try, to manage alone any longer. To me, all Darryl's mood swings, his irrational behaviour, his extreme anxiety, indicate some form of mental illness. (Pauline Stroud on Archers Addicts Facebook group)
I'm glad #Shula isn't a counsellor! She may mean well, but she really isn't helping. She has no understanding of the situation #thearchers (@SocialistGreen on Twitter)
shula worrying about that douchbag darrell is such a tedious storyline (Andrew Morgan on BBC The Archers Facebook page)
#TheArchers is doing an excellent job of making Darryl into a totally unsympathetic character. I'm not sure its intentional though. (@modflowers on Twitter)
I keep changing my opinions about Shula & Darrell. It's being handled v interestingly #thearchers (@barefootmower on Twitter)
I am now #TeamDarrel. Odious Shula must be stopped with extreme prejudice #thearchers (@HiggsBoz0 on Twitter)
Oh Saint Shula you are such a pain #thearchers (@ofmsnow on Twitter)
Surprise hero of the week was Eddie Grundy after his pep talk and perhaps unwise handout of a tenner to Darrell
Well Eddie regained some of my respect tonight, someone had to give it to Darrell good and straight, and it's better coming from someone who's been there before, which Shula can't provide. (Roe Z Sandy on Archers Addicts Facebook group)
Things must be bad when Eddie Grundy is offering advice (and a tenner GULP!) #thearchers (@StephenDGH on Twitter)
Eddie is a legend, it would be a better world if more people were like him. #thearchers #doesnthateDarryl (@kingbagcarrier on Twitter)
I have always loved Eddie. If there's more Grundy and less Archers then I won't mind this Darrell storyline so much #TheArchers (@SarahCGray on Twitter)
I knew #Darrell was lying. Well done #Eddie. #thearchers (@dineketh on Twitter)
Eddie's a fine one to talk given he's currently trying to scam Caroline and Oliver out of more compensation money. #thearchers (@janewright on Twitter)
News that the neospora parasite had arrived at Grange Farm was a heavy blow for Ed. Was he unnecessarily gloomy or is he justified in feeling down on his luck?
Ed is the most negative character I have come across. One thing can go wrong, as always happens in life, and he thinks the world is going to end. He reminds me of that Scottish bloke from Dads Army - "We're all doomed!" (Andy McGowan on Archers Addicts Facebook group)
He does seem to end up down in the dumps pretty easily - - but remember he has to live with Emma. (Laura Jo Elzinga on Archers Addicts Facebook group)
Is anyone else screaming at the writers to leave my poor beloved Ed alone and send the bad luck elsewhere? Lets face it, it is bad enough he has to cope with Emma everyday. Let him be! Send the parasites to Bryan and Rob! (Beckie Howe on BBC The Archers Facebook page)
I wish the scriptwriters would stop making Ed out to be thick and unreasonable. He isn't and never has been. #thearchers (@fairy_with_hair on Twitter)
So sorry for Ed and Mike over the parasitic infection on some of their Jersey herd - would devastate a dairy operation #thearchers (@Labourcat on Twitter)
Why do bad things always happen to Ed? Has Will made a deal with the devil (aka Martyn Gibson)? #TheArchers (@MagneticFlea on Twitter)
Kenton really is a master of insensitivity, I'm surprised Jolene didn't give him a slap. (Jean Bell on BBC The Archers Facebook page)
Keep your compliments for your bride Kenton #thearchers (@busydawn on Twitter)
Jolene wants her womanly needs met Kenton. Get to it lad. #thearchers (@mkcloughie on Twitter)
Shut up Kenton and kiss jolene #thearchers (@satnav2012 on Twitter)
Mel is pretty in a pretty sort of way, you Jolene.. well, you own a pub #thearchers (@SmithPeterScott on Twitter)
Thankfully Fallon was around to restore the bride-to-be’s confidence and set the scene for the wedding of the year.
It's so lovely when your offspring pay you an over-the-top compliment because they know you're feeling unsure of yourself. #TheArchers (@MsAlliance on Twitter)
Fallon makes a strong play for Ambridge Best Daughter of the Year title. #thearchers (@beckyblackbooks on Twitter)
