Radio 4’s You and Yours recently ran an Emotional Recognition study, based on market research into the success of adverts.
Listeners were invited to take part in a survey via the You and Yours website. Volunteers listened to three short bursts of music that would be instantly recognizable to Radio 4 listeners:
National Anthem, Sailing By, Barwick Green By accessing a link to the pieces, and allowing themselves to be filmed via a webcam, volunteers' reactions were analysed. In terms of making people happy, Barwick Green came out on top with 90%. Sailing By was close behind with 89% and the National Anthem achieved 83%.
You can listen to the feature for all the findings, and also hear an interview with a delighted Hedli Niklaus - The Archers' own Kathy Perks
