Ever wanted to know what happened in Ambridge in the 1950s and 1960s? Scroll back through our Facebook page and you’ll find an illustrated history of The Archers – starting on 29 May 1950 when the Midlands Home Service broadcasts a pilot programme called The Archers of Ambridge. We’ve just reached 1969 which marks the year that Dan Archer announces his semi-retirement and Phil, Jill and the children make plans to move to Brookfield Farm.

You’ll also find details of Nelson Gabriel’s disappearance and the great mail-van robbery and Jennifer’s shocking out-of-wedlock pregnancy (and the real-world graffiti declaring “Doris Archer is a prude”)

There will be more updates over the next few weeks. If you think we’ve missed any major events, let us know in the comments below or on our Facebook page and we’ll add them in.

Tayler Cresswell is The Archers’ social media host.
