Listeners have had plenty to talk about this week: poor Baz - shot by Ed, and Shula’s problems with Darrell. However some listeners are finding it all a bit dark at the moment.

On a brighter note, many felt a festive glow as the Ambridge Christmas lights were switched on, and Oliver and Joe made up. Ahhh!

And finally there’s been plenty of gossip about Helen and Rob. Is it all over now Jess is staying put in Ambridge?

Here’s my pick of online discussions between 28 November and 4 December 2013

The demise of Baz prompted an outpouring of feeling – including contempt for Will and Ed

Oh no! In floods of tears. Ed's shot Will's Baz.  ‪@BBCTheArchers ‪#thearchers (@SybilRuscoe on Twitter)

Wow.  That was just... Blood curdling ‪#thearchers (@Dyskadores on Twitter)

I almost crashed my car! (Helen Rose on BBC The Archers Facebook page)

Can't bear to listen to it. Feel it's time the scriptwriters allowed them to have a rapprochement rather than stoking the fires over and over (Sara Hawker on BBC The Archers Facebook page)

I just wish Eddie would grow a pair when it comes to his sons. If only he'd just read them the riot act, for Clarrie's sake. #thearchers (@SueHomeyard on Twitter)

About time those toxic brothers thought about how their behaviour affects others, especially George. Poor Nic will never hear the end of Wills moaning! (Chris Walmsley on BBC The Archers Facebook page)

First ‪#familyguy Brian gets it, now ‪#thearchers Baz. Not a good week for showbiz dogs (@PlumptonBSc_V_O on Twitter)

Neigh *Looks like we're in for a volatile Christmas. Anyone want to adopt a pony?* ‪#thearchers (@BartlebyPony on Twitter)

So who’s Team Will?

Ed's gone too far this time. Feel sorry for Will. he's not just lost a dog but a working partner. (Paul Bishop on BBC The Archers Facebook page)

All of us can be cowards at some point but Ed's one of the worst. He knew it was little Baz in his sights & he relished the shot ‪#thearchers (@HiggsBoz0 on Twitter)

‪@BBCTheArchers Hope you have a suitable doom for Ed coming up. Nasty piece of work. Hope all his cows catch mould or whatever it is. (@Bluebookballoon on Twitter)

And Team Ed?

‪@bbcthearchers Will is a nasty bit of work! Jealous and vindictive and believing himself superior!! (@LaCapelle on Twitter)

Oh, Will is loving this. He doesn't care about the dog at all, he's just pleased to have something else to rib Ed about. ‪#thearchers (@fairy_with_hair on Twitter)

Oh, my, Will, you were doing OK up to now. Nice little chat with Georgie. Now yer sounding unhinged. (@SpareMousie on Twitter)

By Wednesday Will agreed to help with the turkeys, despite the fact that Ed would be there

Is Will going to mistake Ed for a turkey and wring his neck? (Sue Pidgeon on BBC The Archers Facebook page)

It will be like high noon at the Grundy's. (Thomas Killick on Archers Addicts Facebook group)

Chrissakes, Clarrie. Just tell them you don't want to see either of them over Christmas and put your feet up. ‪#theArchers  (@Rebs7 on Twitter)

Things aren’t any better at The Stables. Shula "can’t cope with Darrell", Dan is spoilt and as for Darrell

‪#thearchers - get that man some proper intervention ‪#depression (@gbg1954 on Twitter)

FGS, just frogmarch him to the nearest GP - the man is ill!! (Mike Tarrant on BBC The Archers Facebook page)

@BBCTheArchers he's behaving just like a cuckoo chick pushing all the other babies out of the nest. That's Darrell for you... Poor Dan! (@MissRachaelFay on Twitter)

Right now she couldn't see a freight train approaching fast . . . . open your eyes Shula. The more comfortable it is for Darryl, the less reason he has to leave . . . (Jill Anthony-Ackery on BBC The Archers Facebook page)

If that's how smug Shula deals with her son no wonder she can't cope with Darrell! ‪#thearchers (@modicana on Twitter)

Shula needs a good dose of common sense...feeling bad for her family right now... (Mary Hoffmann on on BBC The Archers Facebook page)

Dan is feeling thoroughly fed up. All together now "Aw, diddums!" ‪#thearchers (@woolminer on Twitter)

There have been some listeners who are finding The Archers storylines a bit dark

Am struggling a bit with ‪#thearchers at the moment. Shula sacrificing all for a halo and as for feuding farming families.... (@mygoodbrightdog on Twitter)

I am beginning to wonder whether anything positive at all can happen in Ambridge at the moment.  Deeply depressing ‪#thearchers (@johnccmay on Twitter)

'tis the Season to be Jolly? ... not in the Archers this year I'm afraid. We will all end up with depression if they keep throwing these doom-laden episodes at us. I have lost count of this year’s tales of misery and woe. I remember a time when I felt cosy and comforted when I visited Ambridge but not anymore (Wendy Stephens on BBC The Archers Facebook page)

On a more positive note, the Ambridge Christmas lights were ceremoniously switched on!

Aw feeling festive with the lights switch on ‪@bbcthearchers :-) (@megan_beech on Twitter)

It sounded beautiful last night all the lights going on in the village.  Wish I was there! (@valflood on Twitter)

And Oliver and Joe made up… Awww

Nice to hear Joe Grundy is nearly back to "indestructible" level! ‪#thearchers (@potterwigwam on Twitter)

Oliver is a decent bloke through and through. He just wanted to make personal contact without being over flash with his wealth. I'd be happy to have him as my neighbour. To be honest I wish I could say the same of the grundy clan. (Owen Cooper on Archers Addicts Facebook group)

And so to the Ambridge love triangle…  Newbie Jess comes under the spotlight this week. Is she really as nice as villagers seem to think? Many listeners suspect that Helen and Rob will end up together

Jess is being built up as so nice. What's her guilty secret? ‪#TheArchers (@cha0tic on Twitter)

Jess really sets my teeth on edge and I don't trust her veneer of 'niceness' at all. She was bossy and sarcastic when alone with Rob and, quite honestly, I shall cheer if Rob leaves her for Helen. Helen has her faults, but Jess is like a toxic shock wrapped in a sugar-coating! I am now TeamHelen, much to my surprise. (Nemo399 on The Archers blog)

Can't agree that Jess is anything but a saint. She isn't a viperish little home wrecker like Helen. Rob told Helen he was married from the outset but the selfish odious Helen carried on in the name of carnal lust. Helen is so shameless that now she is even using her poor innocent child, Henry, as a pawn in her sex-mind games with Rob. Helen is a creep. (Cedric Lochness on The Archers blog)

I can see Rob and Jess having an argument over Christmas and he and Helen get together for New Years Eve now that could have all sorts of consequences for 2014 (Sarah Hall on Archers Addicts Facebook group)

SO is Helen just going to say ok now and return to normal. Whilst Rob finds a house in another village, and they just meet in passing? (George Taylor on Archers Addicts Facebook group)

Oh no! Are we going to be cheated of the much anticipated bunny boiling storyline? I actually am disappointed now! (Pam Tonothy on Archers Addicts Facebook group)

They can't just stop the storyline like that, there's so much deliciously deep potential! (Joanna Simms on Archers Addicts Facebook group)

‪#thearchers I'm sure an anonymous well wisher will helpfully put Jess in the picture. *snips up newspaper headlines* (@Corporalhumble on Twitter)

Isn't it time Alistair put Shula out of our pain? - a shot of horse tranquiliser, at the very least.

I am not sure I can take much more of her shrill breast-beating: I blame the Vicar for putting her in a position where her zeal (as Jim aptly put it) for seeking sainthood was going to be at the cost of the vulnerable - God save us all from well-meaning but ill-equipped saviours.

A cure for all the household might be a stint down the hostel on Christmas day ... potato peeling and washing up being the orde of the day.

Re the shooting of Baz, why has no one in Ambridge mentioned that a farmer is only legally entitled to shoot a dog that is worrying livestock? A farmer is not legally entitled to shoot a dog simply because it is on his land. Any shooting must be reported to the police. It's hardly credible that Will wouldn't know this and raise it.

Re Shula, please somebody shoot her. Perhaps Ed could mistake her for a dog. The inhabitants of Ambridge neverneverland would dismiss it as an unfortunate accident.
