Listeners were in shock this week as Lilian and Paul’s love story came to an abrupt end! In the days beforehand, many speculated on the outcome and omnibusers broke with tradition and tuned in during the week.
Meanwhile, listeners wonder if Rob has his eyes on the Bridge Farm heifers. Could Pat’s precious cows end up in Brian’s mega dairy? And at home, the elusive Jess Titchener is fuelling gossip – where is she?
And as Jennifer tries to steer clear of Jim as she attempts to find her mum a home help, she has come under scrutiny – listeners think her snobbery could be “a defensive thing”
Here’s my pick of online listener discussions between 30 May and 6 June 2013.
Everything else is superfluous now. I want a proper fistycuffs between the brothers and Lillian drowning in gin #thearchers (@msladygray on Twitter)
So sick of the Paul and Lillian story. Very nice not to hear from either of them tonight. (Sue Bailey on BBC The Archers Facebook page)
@BBCTheArchers Paul will probably break in to the Dower House & take Lilian hostage cos he's obsessed & Matt will be beside himself. (@Streakyblue1951 on Twitter)
Lils may have entered a murder scene #TheArchers Paul lying dead in the bath (@Dark_Blue_Box on Twitter)
He is snivelling in the local pub, under a newspaper, waiting for sympathy (Hilary Marson on BBC The Archers Facebook page)
I expect Paul has committed suicide and will be discovered by Lilian. (Ian Edmundson on BBC The Archers Facebook page)
I think that he has had a heart attack after being assaulted and Lillian will blame herself for not being with him. (Beth Denning on BBC The Archers Facebook page)
This storyline is such fun I shall be really gutted when it runs its course.(Pure schadenfreude!) (erindoors on The Archers blog)
If you play tonight's episode of #thearchers backwards it says "Paul is dead." (@skibby_tbk on Twitter)
Then on Thursday, the bombshell
WOW! OMG Lilian just fessed up about Paul and Paul is dead and she can’t say and OMG OMG MY HEAD IS EXPLODING! #thearchers (@LucyLyons on Twitter)
That's my fourth time hearing that and it's still as shocking. #paulsdead #thearchers (@SaraThornton1 on Twitter)
I have to say that was unexpected! Wowzers @BBCTheArchers, good work! #thearchers (@elbowjuice on Twitter)
Oh I feel so smug, as I predicted it exactly - down to Lillian having to spend the rest of her days sorrowing in silence ... Doesn't anyone remember the pain in the chest episode? A dead giveaway! (Jennie Towan on BBC The Archers Facebook page)
Can't help feeling disappointed that there wasn't a showdown between Matt and Paul but I guess the way it panned out was probably more realistic. (Rob Gibbs on BBC The Archers Facebook page)
Just caught up with #thearchers. Can I just say... OMG WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN AT THE FUNERAL? (@cassiechadmoran on Twitter)
Argh. You can almost hear the hammer of Brian's thoughts, as he mentally boxes-up Pat and Tony's Friesians. #thearchers (@Gary_Gillatt on Twitter)
Brian buying in cattle from Europe . Why? Don't we produce enough? ( I know we are importing coal from Russia for our heritage railways, but really!) Brother in law selling cattle and complaining doesn't get enough help from the Aldridges. Problem (partially ) solved I would have thought ! (Trevor Collins on Archers Addicts Facebook group)
There’s plenty of speculation about Rob’s wife Jess, conspicuous by her absence.
Rob has been such a hit In Ambridge, and seems to be so popular with everybody... There's got to be some serious sort of skeleton lurking in his cupboard, And it's got to be something to do with Jess. (Sara DH on BBC The Archers Facebook page)
Hmmm... Jess? Schmess? Does this woman exist? #thearchers (@easedale on Twitter)
Rob is inviting Adam out for a drink. I think he IS this year's Pawel after all! Ian, your husband is a honey magnet. #TheArchers (@ginandcrumpets on Twitter)
Wow, if being gay turns out to be his big secret, I hope the Archers will get a collective eyeroll. At this point, I expect nothing less than finding out that Mrs. Titchner is six feet under the cricket pitch and Rob put her there. (Paula Fomby on BBC The Archers Facebook page)
Jenny avoiding Jim has to be one of the funniest #thearchers storylines recently. (@HeccyBen on Twitter)
Do you know, I think I love Jennydarling. She's FAR too busy to have time to organise home helps you know. #thearchers (@gingabeans on Twitter)
I think Jenny's snobbery is her own way of distancing herself from her own past. She can be HUGELY irritating at times, but I like to think that she'd help out if she could. Mind you, I did like Tony putting Brian in his place the other day..... Jennifer's help was conspicuous by its absence during the e-coli episode. (Tim Porter on Archers Addicts Facebook group)
I think Jenny's snobbery is partly a defensive thing. She can't, or thinks she can't, relate to "ordinary" folk and worries how she appears to them. She never comes across as being genuinely aloof in a deliberate way. Always just the right side of complete panic! (Paul Townshend on Archers Addicts Facebook group)
I know she is a snob but she is loyal even if it is only Brian and she was doing the best for her mum (Lesley Leach on Archers Addicts Facebook group)
