Ask Anthea

Anthea’s recent appearance prompted a number of questions to Ambridge’s very own agony aunt. She responds to a selection with her usual tough love (more tough than love, it’s fair to say).
Dear Anthea,
I used to go out with this guy but he dumped me and lived with my best friend for years and even asked her to marry him. But she dumped him a couple of weeks ago and left town. Now he says it was me he loved all along. Should I believe him?
Ecogirl
Dear Ecogirl
Sounds like a classic case of ‘on the rebound’ to me. Proceed with great caution and under no circumstances move in with him.
Dear Anthea,
I have just had a baby and my neighbour kindly gave me lots of her little girl's outgrown clothes. The problem is that the clothes are vile. How can I avoid hurting my friend's feelings without dressing my precious baby like a cross between Barbara Cartland and My Little Pony?
Mother-of-three
Dear Mother-of-three
Why on earth did you accept the clothes if they knew you were not to your taste? In trying to avoid one awkward moment, you have now created lasting embarrassment. Honesty is the best policy. If your friend is a true one, then she will get over it.
Dear Anthea,
My Mum's got really snappy lately. She keeps taking me for long walks, then packs me off home when anyone mentions cows. She used to let me do anything I like but now she gets cross. Yesterday she used a terrible word she's never used before: 'no'. Still, at least she's not going off to that jewellery class that makes her look all funny and glow-ey. Grandma says she's just missing the cows but I think it's something more.
Confused
Dear Confused,
Is your mother in a relationship? It sounds to me as if she needs the love of a good man. Is there a man who enjoys playing with you? Perhaps you could get them together.
Dear Anthea,
Should I stop my former partner’s wedding with a Vicar of Dibley 'it should have been me' moment?
Twice-dumped
Dear Twice-dumped
Absolutely not. Such behaviour would be outrageous. What do you think this is, a soap opera?
Anthea was giving dictation to Archers scriptwriter and web producer Keri Davies.
Our thanks to everyone who passed on questions, including Christine Wilson, Ian Berry, Rachel Fleming and Rona Skene.

    Dear Anthea,
I wonder if you can help me? I'm a qualified chippie who recently lost my home, my wife and family and my job. I'm easily led and have problems telling right from wrong sometimes. A very nice lady has offered to help me and she's been very nice and kind so far. She's let me live at her nice house and gives me food and stuff. I don't think her husband likes me very much but it's not him that's the problem really. I think it might be me. The nice lady tried to get me to go to the doctor's but I didn't think there was anything wrong with me. I'm not so sure now. I keep thinking I've failed at everything and it's really upsetting me. I got drunk on self-medication the other day and upset a horse and the family I'm staying with. I apologised and they are going to let me stay with them for a bit longer but I don't know what I should do next.
Do you think I should see the doctor?
Or should I go and see my family and try and patch things up? I'm sure I could do that, if I had my tools with me.
Or can you offer any other advice? I'd really like to hear anything you'd have to offer.

Dear Anthea, I have been approached to take part in the local pantomine. I would love to participate but my partner becomes envious if I have to 'kiss or cuddle' or even act in a loving manner towards a fellow actor. Should I just volunteer to look after the costumes, or should I follow my dream of becoming an actor?

Dear Chippie, you are being so slow, just steal all her good stuff, fence it and move on, and stop drinking in Ambridge.

    Dear Anthea,

I understand that plans are afoot to put together a Village Cookbook. Do you know whether the compiler is testing out the recipes? I have a Hemlock Syllabub I'd like her to try.

    Dear Anthea,
You might want to have a word with Keri, who takes your dictation. He may have wanted these comments to make a serious point about the future direction of this blog thread. What he doesn't seem to realise is that some of the more sarcy readers couldn't possibly pass up an opportunity like this to make frivolous comments.
However, having thought about it a bit more, perhaps you could somehow link your Ask Anthea spot to Keri's weekly ups and downs in Ambridge. Perhaps pick one particular up or down and invite readers to ask you more about it. You must be privy to all sorts of "behind the scenes" secrets about the ups and downs of Ambridge and I know we'd all like to hear your insights. If done in your inimitable "straight-forward-so-therefore-not-gossipy" way, it could be a hit!
