"Roar for your daughter all her life" - listener discussions to 19 September 2012

Mike and Vicky's discussion on Friday, taking over the whole episode, was described as "gripping" and had some in tears. Many praised the "fearless" airing of Mike's concerns, but a few felt that it was overly sentimental.

Adam's chat with Jennifer raised a few eyebrows - is he so much of a mummy's boy that he'd tell his mum about his infidelity? "Yuk!"

Listeners' imaginations are on overdrive this week - they've cast Elizabeth as "keeping her enemies close" in her reconciliation with David; and Joyce and Arthur are suspected of being Russian sleeper spies (according to Twitter) or perhaps Vaudeville veterans (from the message board). But most are united in the call for an end to the "floorboard hokey cokey".

Here's my pick of listener discussions on The Archers message board, Twitter and Facebook between 13-19 September 2012.

The biggest reaction this past week has been to last Friday's episode - a rare two-hander between Mike and Vicky Tucker, following their conversations as they grappled with decisions about their future. Online conversation slowed towards the end of the programme and people reported being stopped in their tracks...

Wow. What a great episode of #thearchers. The shower has been on for the last ten minutes but I have just sat at the top of the stairs listening (@babyniss on Twitter)

What a truly brilliant episode of @BBCTheArchers that was tonight. Couldn't move, stood staring at the radio. (@beckybose on Twitter)

@BBCTheArchers Held me in a vice like grip tonight. Panic, fear then relief. I need a lie down. (@gilly38 on Twitter)

And whilst some felt it was overly "sentimental", most said they felt for the couple and that airing Mike's views - "saying the unspeakable" - was brave. Listeners are split with many thinking that Vicky is being selfish, forcing a difficult parenthood on Mike at his age. Others have cheered on Lioness Vicky.

I don't think for a moment that daft, twinkly Vicky thinks this baby is a teddy or a dolly. I think she's made a decision out of principle after finding herself in a situation which was at most only half her making. Roar for your daughter all her life. Yours tearfully (villageschoolmaam on the message board)

a tear no but it forced me to think what I would have done in Mike's situation. Soaps don't normally do that #thearchers (@roifield on Twitter)

She wants her baby. As simple as that. Mike is an older father but that's a separate issue which wouldn't change if the baby wasn't Downs. Life will be difficult, but they should both be supported now. I thought Friday's episode was very moving & back to what we love about the programme. (Jeanette Dobson on Facebook)

We do not live in the middle ages. I'm with Vicky all the way with this, if the abnormalities were incompatible with life, then termination would be the answer but still incredibly difficult to deal with. (retired midwife) (Rosemary Forrest on Facebook)

Dear SWs. Less mawkish sentimentality next week please. #thearchers (@PatrickFMay on Twitter)

Hm. Not entirely convinced that they could resolve this issue that quickly. #thearchers (@MsAlliance on Twitter)

@BBCTheArchers Hope little baby Tucker will stay around and grow up in Ambridge to give an idea of the issues real families face. (@oneinamidden on Twitter)

Over at Lower Loxley, David's reconciliation with Elizabeth had listeners feeling either tearful, delighted or nauseous. A handful, however, suspect that David should watch his back...

Good old Elizabeth: keeping her friends close, but her enemies (David) closer. #thearchers (@jtwentyman on Twitter)

''I'll see you out...'' Mind that loose stairtread........#thearchers (@2ndcitysuit on Twitter)

I am disappointed that David is such a fool to be taken in by Lizard and her inscription [on his birthday present] would have had me regurgitating my supper were it not for the fact that I had not even cooked it then let alone eaten. (La Sharpissima on the message board)

oh dear, i fess to having a little sniffle. (irene on the message board)

#thearchers well done Lizzie. It took you long enough! (@sarafourteen on Twitter)

As Adam revealed all to Jennifer about his one night stand with Pawel, eyebrows were raised - would you really say that to your mum?

Why would a man in his 40's tell his mother all about his sex life.....yuk! (Angela Stepney on the message board)

Ooh to have seen Jennifer's face once that bombshell was dropped #thearchers (@shimmy41a on Twitter)

After living with Brian for so long, infidelity can't come as a complete shock to her! And she has had her own moments, too. But I agree that telling your mum about your affairs is a bit weird. (ruralrambler on the message board)

He has always been a Mummy's Boy. (mike on the message board)

Can't believe Jenny advising Adam not to fess up to Ian, living with Brian must be having an effect. #TheArchers (@OxonClearout on Twitter)

i feel sorry for Ian he doesn't deserve a rotty like selfish adam #thearchers (@satnav2012 on Twitter)

Many have been looking forward to Pawel's departure - but some have been hoping that he'd stay in Ambridge

I think Pavel is a predator and potential stalker/blackmailer . I can't wait to see the back of him, he really gives me the creeps. (bebopalula on the message board)

I feel sorry for Pavel. What's he actually done that's so terrible? He's a young gay man from a place where it's difficult, if not dangerous, to be openly gay. He's trying to enjoy Britain's more open culture while making a few quid. In the process he gets drunk with his boss and goes to bed with him. They are both adults. (Freda Fry on the message board)

He is far too entertaining a character to be allowed to leave, and must remain in the village, sleeping with everyone in sight and stalking Adam without mercy. (Katja2 on the message board)

When it comes to the "Floorboard hokey cokey", listeners seem just as keen as Arthur and Joyce are for it to be over. There's some speculation about the couple, with Twitter folk thinking they might be "Russian sleeper spies" and message board posters saying they're "Vaudeville veterans", but not everyone's a fan...

Now that all the floorboards are up there's space to fit in, ooh I don't know, a couple of narky OAPs? #thearchers @BBCTheArchers (@headlineandrew on Twitter)

I love Joyce & Arthur....certain they are retired assassins who will soon be back at work! #TheArchers (@Mistress_Fiona on Twitter)

Joyce and Arthur are obviously veterans of the vaudeville. Old troopers like them ought to be able to manage to tread to boards. Never moind 'er 'ip - the show must go on, you know! (JustJanie - Fairweather Jogger on the message board)

Please let darrell find his backbone and put the floorboards back it's boring now (Janet Walton on Facebook)

I LURVE the elderly couple - they are wonderful on so many levels: Matt's comeuppance - he regards them as a project to be DEFEATED .. alpha male against old fogies ..The conversations with Darrell - so bizarre they are up there with Becket and Pinter. The brokers men in a panto .. (JustPodiumedBunny_Silver_medalist on the message board)

Read all about it in the Floorboard Hokey-Cokey and 'Soideways?! With 'er 'ip?!' threads on the message board.
