Thumb bashing at the Golden Joysticks

Darren Waters | 14:46 UK time, Monday, 19 May 2008

It's that time of the year again: voting commences for the Golden Joysticks.

The Golden Joysticks pride themselves of being the "people's choice" when it comes to video game awards and last year 750,000 votes for the best of the best were cast.

The results do tend to be a little, ahem, populist - Gears of War was last year's big winner - but that's no bad thing, surely?

Copies of Grand Theft Auto IVWith the Bafta video game awards postponed until 2009 - to make the voting window simpler and end the farcical situation in which unfinished games were getting nominated - the Golden Joysticks have taken on more importance.

The organisers are hoping to break the million vote barrier this year and I'll bet now that Grand Theft Auto IV will be the big winner. You don't need a crystal ball to make that prediction.

Voting at this stage is to create a shortlist of titles, which will be revealed on 23 June.

Go vote.

Why do they still call these awards; "The Golden Joysticks?"

Think about it - what percentage of gamers actually use a Joystick these days?

Three percent - five percent perhaps?

Games systems use controllers and have done since the NES and megadrive. Most PC gamers use a mouse and keyboard.

Can any one think of a BETTER name for the awards?

I did not know this website until now, thank you Mr Waters.

I tried to check the website a few times today but it is really slow and I get an error. It seems the website is overcrowded and can not support the number of users trying to get on, or it is just an issue from the server being slow, I do not know.

It seems this website is about the "wisdom of the crowd" about rating the video game of the year. I suppose the term "populist" is right as the most sold game will get most of the votes.

I think the interesting thing is not who is the winner, but how many votes it will cast compared to the number 2.

We will see when the website gets up and running again.

It's basically the best thing the BBC do.

The two guys that make it, Rab and Ryan, do another program outside of the BBC, called Consolevania. You can stream them at http://www.consolevania.com, and they have put them all up for download as torrents here - http://cv.robbo.com/

Obviously the older series are a bit dated now, but still highly entertaining.
