Well we’ve all had our fill of tex-mex and showcase queues for another year and its time to settle in and recoup in time for the summer festivals. But all this doesn’t mean the fun is over! Let’s relive the finer moments of SXSW 2008 together shall we?

Through the wondrous power of the internet you can still watch performances from the BBC Introducing Showcase now on their special SXSW homepage.

So what did we discover from all this? (other that Austin throws a good party). Which bands caught the eye and who will look back at SXSW 2008 as a turning point?

As far a Chromewaves are concerned the high points of the week were visits to see Peelander-Z and The Brother Kite as well as some impressive Scottishness in the forms of Sons & Daughter’s and the “even better than I'd anticipated” Frightened Rabbit. Other noble mentions go to Emmy The Great and Portland duo She & Him.

Over at The Music Slut superlatives were reserved for SXSW veteran Billy Bragg and his duet with Kate Nash, the frequently mentioned Lightspeed Champion, N.E.R.D and M. Ward's collaboration with My Morning Jacket's Jim James.

Stereogum have already completed a five artist strong hall of fame, which counts Londoners F**K Buttons at number one, along with Montreal's Islands, Los Angeles noise rockers HEALTH, Southend's These New Puritans and war paint lovers Man Man.

Torr went one better with six favourites, including MGMT’s appearance at our own BBC Introducing Showcase, along with sets from Melbourne’s Cut Copy, Castledoor, former Ambulance LTD members The Red Romance, The Republic Tigers and Nada Surf.

Finally Donewaiting have turned everything on its head and asked you for your SXSW picks. Answers on a post card (or comment form) to this post.

So what does this all mean? More cds to buy, more magazines to read and more gigs to go to. Well that can’t be a bad thing now can it? Hope we’ve helped you along the way. Think of us in six months time when you’re in the front row at The Dodos, Florence And The Machine or Frightened Rabbit.

See you next March…

Over breakfast today it offered a thoughtful overview of the past four days of music, business and hard partying.

In a retrospective piece titled South by Southwest makes its mark on Austin Michael Corcoran suggests that - like the music industry itself - the festival is now suffering from a proliferation of "free" music beyond its boundaries. These take the form of fringe events and promotional parties (240 of them this year) with complimentary drinks and even goodie bags - laid on by organisations ranging from the UK's Q Magazine to Levi jeans.
Corcoran quotes an Atlanta publicist as saying "It's gotten so big you don't need to buy a badge anymore." And there's your problem, right there. Just like the major record labels, the official festival is seeing its source of funding being cut away from under its feet. None of this had even occurred to me in the past few days, and if you're curious about some of the wider issues surrounding this event the article is well worth checking out.

This morning, with the festival pretty much over, the roads between our hotel by the Colorado river and the bars and clubs of 6th Street were uncannily deserted after the frenetic crowds of the past few days - and wet from the cleaning trucks.
I snapped a few last shots on my phone before heading back to the hotel to get packed and ready for the day's journey home.

Damn. Overcome by the jetlag (and an ill-advised teatime margherita at The Broken Nickel) I fell asleep yesterday on the crucial last evening and missed several of the bands on my must-see list. This included a gig at The Beauty Bar by Bruno Wizard - from obscure 1978 punk rock band The Homosexuals - with his US musicians. But Bruno kindly joined me later to watch Indonesian oddballs White Shoes And The Couples Company and agreed to answer a question or two afterwards. But actually one question was all it took...

This is the best thing that’s happened to me since I’ve been here (and very nearly the best thing that’s ever happened to me). I was having some Chinese food (when in Rome and all that) with a couple of friends, when one of them stops mid-wonton, and starts pointing, slack-jawed across the room.

“That,” he says, jabbing a chopstick towards the bar, “Is Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top....”

None of us believed him. Yes, the legendary rock band do hail from Texas. Yes, they’re rumoured to play at every SXSW festival. And yes, the gentleman in question did have a huge beard, just like ZZ Top guitarist Billy Gib….

“Bloody hell, that's Billy Gibbons.”

After ten minutes of us individually pretending to go to the toilet so we could walk past him and have a proper look, one member of our party summons up the courage to speak to the great man.

And lo and behold, he turns out to be utterly charming.

“I thought you were from England” he comments (What was it that gave us away? The weak bladders?) before chatting about his extensive collection of guitars and cars, and explaining that no, ZZ Top are not playing this year, but he’s around to “soak up the atmosphere and check out some bands”.

Then (and this is the best bit) he asks how many of us are in our group - we say five - as he reaches into his pocket and whips out five pictures of himself, signs all of them, and gives them to us.

What a dude (in a real Big Lebowski way).*

From now on I’m going to carry around pictures of myself, then sign and give them to everyone that speaks to me. Even if it’s just in the supermarket.

Just so you know.

Matt

*Sadly, I can’t confirm that he was driving the red 1933 Ford 3-window coupé ZZ Top Hot Rod car that featured in a the videos for Sharp Dressed Man, Gimme All Your Lovin’ and Legs, cos we were to excited when we left to check the car park.

But I bet he was.

Its like the last days of Rome out there. Only with more Lite beer. Last night that South by South West really started to live up to it’s name as ‘a festival’.

In a good way (streets flooded with people from all over the world, music everywhere and an air of excitement and lawlessness in the air) and also a slightly worrying way (everyone's smashed by lunchtime, there’s crusties playing interminably bad psych-rock on street corners and there’s an air of hot dogs and vomit in the air).

So what did you see last night Matt? Well, I’m glad you asked. A real mixed bag last night. Kicked this off at the Stubbs Barbeque with The Ting Tings. Despite technical difficulties (melted sequencers) caused by the excessive heat, they played a stormer. A little uptight and nervous to start with, but the show was a triumph.

Also checked out Santogold. Who, as far as I’m concerned is proper skill and ace, but she failed to set the world alight. Too many slow songs for a festival set methinks. But don’t let that put you off checking her music out.

We watched MGMT again (good, but not the revelatory prog rock epiphany they were at the BBC Introducing night) before witnessing The Cribs in full Cribs mode (shambolic playing with no regard for personal safety but ace nonetheless).

After those good - but slightly predictable - shows, things got a bit more random, in a 'lets-just-have-a-few-beers-and-wander-into-random-venues-kinda' way. And the results were thus:

Bon Iver - Lovely folky acoustic stuff - With a beard.

Fleet Foxes - Gorgeous Crosby Stills & Nash outfit featuring mandolins and all manner of vocal harmony loveliness - With beards.

Old Time Relijun - Incredible mix of psychopathically loud Talking Heads b-sides, uber-low fi Violent Femmes and a saxophonist who looked like someone from Spandau Ballet. No disernable tunes at all, incomprehensible lyrics, and all the better for it (thought I saw Danni Minogue in the audience. Probably not her). With beards.

Telepathy - Massively cool, massively hip, massively disappointing - like watching an American Apparel advert while listening to a bad Kraftwerk covers band on Mogadon - No beards.

In fact, now i mention Telepathy, in terms of ‘festival buzz’, on Wednesday they were unknown, on Thursday they were one of the hottest bands you had to see, but after they played on Friday no one cared anymore.

Which begs the question, will they make a massive comeback on Saturday night?

And more to the point, while at SXSW is it possible to have an entire career (form, practise, play, hype, disband) in the space of just one week?

Anyway, I was also told to check out Kelly Stoltz and Herman Dune - but simply didn’t get time.

But, one of the best things that’s ever happened to me, like, ever, happened last night. So I’ll tell you about that in the next blog entry (cos this one’s gone on a little long and I need a drink).

Loving your work.

Matt

It beats me how Huw and Lammo - in fact the whole Introducing gang - manage to get around so many gigs in such a wide area in such a short time. My first idea was to locate some key venues via Google Maps, then mark up the print-out by hand with bands and times...

That theory broke down on the second evening. Half the shows proved impossible to get into, and as described in my earlier post I ended up simply wandering from bar to bar and queue to queue, drinking in the atmosphere of the warm southern evening.

Next day I headed to the SxSW headquarters at the Austin Convention Center to try and get Official Permission to use my little camcorder at Official Events. The response was an absolute and stone-cold "no". So my next stop - the Music Trade Fair immediately behind the press office - had to be recorded with still photos, using my mobile phone. But take a look - it struck me as a fascinating reminder of the infrastructure musicians have to deal with behind the scenes just to get their work heard in the first place. Music is much more central to US culture (and Texan culture in particular) than it is in Britain. As a result there's a huge sector of support services for bands and songwriters that musicians back home can only dream of...

Saturday afternoon and while the folks in Austin revive themselves with today’s serving of tex-mex its time to have a look at which bands have been getting our friends in the blogosphere excited at this year’s SXSW.

We’ll kick off with Gorilla vs Bear who pick out Aussie’s Cut Copy, power pop duo No Age and the Clipse & Re-up Gang, while they also give a mention to Thursday’s Lou Reed tribute (more of that later) and the lo-fi pop of Karl Bleu.

The Music Slut have also been a busy bunch. Wednesday for them consisted of visits to see Portland grunge act Yacht, We Barbarians and Sweden's The Shout Out Louds, while yesterday they went a for a bit of twee with Los Campesinos! before stopping off to catch Pharrell with his N.E.R.Ds and Dev Hynes with his Lightspeed Champions. They’ve also just posted last night’s update, which includes highlights from Brooklyn four-pieceThe Lisps, Laura Palmer and These United States.

Brooklyn Vegan have gone a bit old school. A visit to them will furnish you with footage from Thursday’s REM and Motorhead shows.

HearYa still have enough tips to do three weeks in Austin’s 6th street, but if you still haven’t decided what tonight will bring why not join them in the audience for Jenny Lewis’ friends The Watson Twins, a feast of British talent at the Press Here and Harp Magazine Party, featuring Laura Marling and Emmy The Great or some Canadian fun with Tokyo Police Club.

Finally over to Some Velvet Blog, where their review of the Lou Reed tribute show (yes that’s the one that included guest spots from Yo La Tengo, Thurston Moore and the man himself with Moby) now features some snazzy YouTube like video.

More about my 3rd day below...

I catch up with Norwich's Bearsuit, or at least 2 out of the 5 because the others were sent home by the visa checkers. They had to cancel the gigs they'd organised and Ian and Jan Bearsuit out here are sad but have to enjoy the rest of their time at SXSW. Hertfordshire's Look See Proof made it out though and I have a little chat with them about their plans here in Austin.

Telepathe are what I imagine a New York amateur dramatics modern version of Macbeth's three witches sound like, with a dubsteppy-soundtrack. They have good beats but no band to back them up tonight and the three ladies singing don't have a good enough pa system to cut it. Which is a shame cos they're the kind of band you'd normally remember forever and there is a buzz about them, as Sean Adams from Drowned in Sound and Tom from Eat Your Own Ears both tipped 'em on the show, and they are men of exquisite taste.

Tonight, my big band treat is The Cribs! As always they totally rock it, from side to side and back again, the brothers Jarman with their expanding back catalogue of tight, jubilant tunes. They play in the open air Stubbs, where REM were the night before, and I had a good old singalong.

With a name like Psychedelic Horseshit you expect something good, and they deliver in Spiro's with punk tunes that are more together than the name actually suggests. I pop in to the next door hip hop club to try and find James who works on Beth Elfyn's Introducing in Wales show, but can't find him among the crunky beats. He was probably in the corner sippin' on some crunk juice.

James with his new bling

Far better is Health, a scattered mutli-membered LA band who, when you finally discover, you'll realise they've already recorded hundreds of albums and have been everyone's favourite band for ages. Tonight though they embody SXSW perfectly, like a weird house band who are just brilliant.

Dublin's Fight Like Apes are like Girls Aloud compared to Health. Their punky keyboard jolts are urgent and enjoyable and are not what I imagined them to be like at all.

Wandering the streets of Austin; Joe Lean watching Telepathe, Los Campesinos! watching Health. I'm never going to get that job with OK magazine at this rate am I?

Today I saw Los Campesinos! play an excellent gig at Emo's. The Americans love a bit of twee, but Gareth Campesinos! says onstage they're a punk band. They're the most brilliantly confusing band around.

The Welsh showcase has the biggest Welsh flag I have ever seen. It is mammothical. And Cate le Bon who sings on the Neon Neon single I Lust U looks tiny next to it. Her voice, as usual, sounds beautiful.

I met up with James from Weekender Records who's out here with Look See Proof and the Peoples Revolutionary Choir. Weekender is a prolific indie label and have a huge banner on a building on 6th street, making sure everyone knows who they are, and more importantly, that they're here.

Why? are an excellent US-leftfield lo-fi hip hop band. But it's hip hop in the loosest sense; this is a drooling, slow, melodic glockenspeil wielding band who always come up with the goods. Saul Williams' gig yesterday was a pleasure to watch, and Jammer, Cool Kids, Dizze Rascal and lots more make sure the hip hop quality elsewhere is high and in peoples faces.

Fleet Foxes sing these beautiful American harmonies, and look set to make a name for themselves. It's laid-back without being wet, beautifully introspective without being woeful. Think Band of Horses in a smaller room.

New Zealanders know how to have a good time, so off I go with Zane Lowe to the NZ barbecue, or, if you prefer, bbq. The Ruby Suns played a fun set; their new album has a lot of different styles on it and it grooves almost as much as they do onstage.

I get to see Neon Neon's first ever gig; Har Mar Superstar is absolutely brilliant onstage joining Gruff, Brian and Cate and the drummer who's name I don't know. It's an 80's electro-ballad-fest as they sing the life of car designer John Delorean to a most groovy effect thanks to bass supplier Tom Rogers who's driven there with said bass by Beth Elfyn, and a whole load of top synth sounds. It's by a swimming pool and it's the nearest to being in The OC I'l ever get.

The Introducing night is ramma-damma-ding-dong, with MGMT proving the biggest pull in a interesting line-up chosen and compered tonight by Steve Lamacq. You can hear highlights on Steve's show.

F*** Buttons take ages to set up at Red Eye Fly. They should, really, be from the States, but are from Bristol, a place about to become famous musically again because of Portishead. Don't stress; F*** Buttons are the best unistenable, un-danceable, un-groove-able band about.
