Susan Calman misses out on the Quarter Finals as she leaves Strictly 2017
With the Quarter Finals just one week away, the standard of dance on Strictly is higher than ever. Unfortunately Susan Calman and partner Kevin Clifton just missed the mark this week, becoming the ninth couple to leave the competition.
The much-loved pair danced an upbeat American Smooth on Saturday night, but failed to impress the Judges with their cruise-themed performance. Their ship sailed when Judge Bruno Tonioli told Susan she needed to work on her technical ability, scoring just 21 overall and placing bottom of the leaderboard. They then only scooped up one more point after finishing last in the Paso Doble-thon, with a final to total of 22.
Once the public vote had been counted, the couple found themselves in the Dance Off, going up against Alexandra Burke and her Pro partner Gorka Marquez. But their fate was quickly sealed as each Judge voted to save Alexandra, with Darcey Bussell saying: “The couple I would like to save just for their artistry and technical ability is Alexandra and Gorka.”
With three votes in their favour – and Shirley Ballas adding that she agreed with her fellow Judges' decisions – Susan and Kevin were swiftly sent home.
When talking to Tess after the Judges' vote, Susan gushed about her time on Strictly, saying: “I have loved every minute of it. Everyone from wardrobe, make-up, the runners, you and lovely Claudia, Zoe on It Takes Two, the beautiful Judges who have brought such light into my life every single week, everyone involved in the show, the audience, everyone who voted for us. We got far further than we thought we would."
Her Pro partner Kevin also shared his appreciation, saying: "I’d like to say thank you to Strictly Come Dancing and echoing everything that Susan said about everyone on it, because I think in a world where not everything going on at the moment is always nice, Strictly is the one thing that brings a lot of joy and happiness into the world through the wonderful thing that is dance. And I think Susan you’ve been the absolute epitome of joy and happiness throughout this whole competition which in my eyes makes you a beautiful dancer. So thank you for dancing with me and thanks for being my friend.”
It was undoubtedly an emotional moment for them both, which they'll be talking more about on It Takes Two, tomorrow on BBC Two at 6.30pm.
