The Viennese Waltz as we know it today is actually the original form of the Waltz!

It's the oldest of all ballroom dances emerging in the second half of the 18th Century influenced by German and Austrian dance styles.

Here's Ian and Karen doing what they do best... teaching us about dance (and chack out Karen's wig height!).

As you heard, the Viennese Waltz was quite the scandalous dance style when it first emerged. Not only were ankles visible from the ladies but both men and women were in hold! Gasp!

However it later gained acceptance and even popularity amongst the upper class.

This dance style differs from the Waltz mainly in its speed. The Viennese Waltz has about 180 beats to the minute whereas the Waltz only have 90.

As Karen and Ian mentioned there are three key turns to a Viennese Waltz. They are:

  • Natural turns - to the right
  • Reverse turns - to the left
  • Change step - in-between the natural and reverse turns

In the Strictly Come Dancing history books the Viennese Waltz has had a few high flyers and low divers. Here are the best and worst:

Ali Bastian and Brian Fortuna - Series 7, week 8 - 40/40

Pamela Stephenson and James Jordan - Series 8, week 10 - 40/40

Scott Maslen and Natalie Lowe - Series 8, week 5 - 39/40

Kara Tointon and Artem Chigvintsev - Series 8, week 11 - 39/40

Harry Judd and Aliona Vilani - Series 9, week 11 - 39/40

Will Thorp and Hanna Haarala - Series 3, week 5 - 23/40

Jo Wood and Brendan Cole - Series 7, week 5 - 23/40

Andrew Castle and Ola Jordan - Series 6, week 6 - 24/40

Dan Lobb and Katya Virshilas - Series 9, week 3 - 24/40

Jan Reeves and Anton Du Beke - Series 4, week 5 - 25/40

Kenny Logan and Ola Jordan - Series 5, week 6 - 26/40

Felicity Kendall and Vincent Simone - Series 8, week 5 - 26/40

I thought 2 contestants were to be eliminated last Sunday. Was this changed because it was noticed that the lack of votes for Denise may mean she would be eliminated so changed it to one?
    Seems like skullduggery to me!

margaret - I agree better dancers than Lisa went out earlier, but she can't do anything about that, and she did acknowledge that she was the worst dancer in the semi-final.

As for Denise, perhaps vitriol is too strong a word, but she has been subjected to constant sniping and moaning about previous experience - you even did it yourself above implying that contestants and pros have been told to play it down. I suggest they are doing that in response to all the nonsense that has been spouted on here and elsewhere about how she shouldn't even have been in the show. Zoe ALWAYS asks the eliminated couple who they want to win, and this is the first week I've heard Denise's name mentioned. Maybe she is now the underdog? Wouldn't that be ironic!

Stevie B DeMille: Everyone "hoped" Lisa would be out if she was in the dance off. I was not aware that Denise had been the subject of vitriol, and although I think she receives unfair marking and comment from the judges I would never comment on anything other than her previous dancing and acting experience. Even James gets away with back talking the judges something Brendan and Anton were ridiculed for. Considering Niki and Colin were put out much too early Lisa was kept in by the British public support for the underdog.

I forgot to add something. Louis is leading Flavia and the three ladies left have a big advantage being led by male pros. That isn't really ever mentioned by the judges, it is much more difficult for male celebs, give Louis some welly for that, judges.

I do not like Helen Skelton, who gets her nose in to everything and is an irritant. She is on the Christmas Special and if she is signed up for next season I don't think I will be able to watch. Why is it always the same pathway for BBC participants? One Show, Eastenders or Blue Peter.
I agree with comment 12. It seems Denise is pushed at every turn. To lump a gymnast in with people who have been to stage school is ridiculous by the way. I agree with the early comments too, find people who HONESTLY haven't had any dance training. If Denise has started from scratch she must be a phenomenon when you think about it. No, sorry I can't believe it.

Despite saying after last Sunday's results that I would not watch Strictly to the end, I just couldn't keep away, and knowing that I wasn't the only viewer to react in a negative way to Nicky being voted off before Lisa helped a lot. I'm so pleased that now we have the fab four celebs who really deserve to be left in the finals where so much is to be expected of them with three dances to perform. They are all four of them brilliant and would not like to have to be a judge. It will be the show dance that seperates the men from the boys, so to speak, so bring it on and good luck to all of them!

I have been a viewer or SCD for nine years and have enjoyed it immensely. This year I am very disappointed in it as I feel it should be renamed Strictly Come Denise. She has had previous dancing experience, Chicago for example; she is a seasoned performer but there now seems to be a crusade from everywhere from Breakfast TV to the one Show saying it's not fair on Denise that people are not voting for her. Why is this? Are the other finalists working less hard? I will not vote this year for the first time ever as a protest against this campaign in favour of one contestant
