Springwatch holidays: in the woods
The UK used to be covered in woodland but there's still plenty to enjoy on your holiday and for so many of our native species it's home sweet home.
Tracking animal footprints can turn a walk into an investigation and turn the kids into sleuths. Bark rubbings are great for bedroom art and tree identification back home, or print off Tree Bingo and see who finds everything first.
Here's a clip from Springwatch with lots more ideas:

Hi All,
Spotted a polecat in my garden one night last week.
The security light came on and he was about 6ft from my pattio window.
He looked at us then ran off up the garden.
I live in Hednesford Staffs

we go to our local woodland often, we also go to bradgate park (leicester, home of lady jane grey) there we see a huge variety of wild life from deeers, rabbits, woodpeckers and even a couple of herons. its lovely to see the woodland at any time of year, every season has something new to see

Help I live on the Suffolk/Norfolk border. Where I walk my dog I have spotted a tiny little moth/butterfly (which is it I wonder). It is bright red and black on top and very bright red underneath and is about a maximum of an inch across with wings spread what is it? There are about 3 or 4 of them in the area but I have never seen them before... I think butterfly because they are out during the day but please put me right.

Springwatch should tell the general public that they don't have to trek all the way up to Scotland to see herds of wild Red Deer.Exmoor is famous for them. And how about an article about Exmoor Ponies?Supposedly rarer than Giant Pandas, and running free in small herds all across Exmoor. They are the nearest thing to the original pony stock that inhabited these islands after the last ice-age.
