Looking forward to Wimbledon (60)
- 20 Jun 06, 11:33 AM
Earlier this week the first of a convoy of OB (outside broadcast) units, scanners, video, graphic and uplink trucks will have rolled through the gates at Wimbledon.
It's now a full-on rush to get everything ready for when the first ball is struck just after noon on Monday 26 June.
80km of cable; 64 cameras and coverage from nine courts makes Wimbledon one of our biggest and most ambitious OB's of the year. So what's new for our TV production in 2006?
In terms of new technology we can promise you a bumper year.
For the first time ever we will be streaming our interactive TV service on broadband and in another first we will be producing some of the match coverage in HD (high definition) .
For the uninitiated, here's where you can find out more about how to get broadband and HD TV.
We think it's fantastic to be able to offer such a range of choice; both in terms of where and what you chose to watch! Don't believe the dire predictions and claims that the whole UK internet could crash under the enormous demand for the World Cup and Wimbledon online.
We're taking steps to make sure that doesn't happen. Nevertheless we expect to see huge numbers accessing their sports action on the web and we're convinced we'll see all records broken for the number watching the streamed action.
HD is another big challenge and I should stress that this year the coverage is part of a trial in which relatively small numbers will be able to access the HD pictures. Nevertheless in terms of production, it's essential we develop the experience and expertise which will enable us to grasp the huge enhancement that HD will offer in the future.
Another change this year is in the time we will transmit our highlights.
"Today at Wimbledon" will now start at the earlier time of 8pm, rather than 9.30pm (although at the weekend when people can more easily access the live daytime coverage they will move later).
As well as the daytime coverage we'll now have an evening schedule on BBC TWO stretching from 6pm - 9pm, and we hope this will be strengthened and made more consistent by including a strong highlights package.
The highlights will now follow on from the live coverage but at a time when research has shown us a bigger audiences come to tennis. The earlier time should also suit our younger viewers.
Looking back over previous years, the live singles play generally doesn't over-run beyond 8pm but if this happens, we'll follow live play with a shorter round-up and then show an additional highlights programme at 11.20pm.
Viewers will still be able to get the repeats of the highlights which we show the following morning in "Yesterday at Wimbledon".
Looking at the emails I've been receiving recently, a lot of people are concerned about the World Cup clashing with Wimbledon. Thank goodness we have two channels and all our interactive streams!
Very occasionally, Wimbledon will have to move onto BBC TWO slightly earlier than it normally would, but there will be no less coverage of the Championship because of the clash with the World Cup. We will broadcast 150 hours of coverage this year - the same as last year - and about 500 hours of coverage on the interactive service.
These are just a few headlines about the changes this year - you can find more information about our on screen team, broadcast schedule, plans for TV, Radio, Interactive, Online and our big screens.
As always we welcome any feedback you have on our coverage of Wimbledon.

So on days where the singles does overrun, people won't be able to watch highlights until quite late really?
Is putting highlights on the interactive stream in your plans at all for the future?
Also this means your doubles coverage will be scaled back to virtually nothing? Shame as its entertaining stuff and the sort of thing the BBC used to have the space and time to show.

As a Freeview viewer can I please put in a plea for someone to check that the extra 2 channels really are extra? So often last year there was duplication of BBC1 or 2 coverage on one of the "extras".
I would also second the plea from Dan not to cut the evening doubles coverage, which to my mind has always made the Wimbledon coverage so much better than any other slam.
Thank you

I would like to see the BBC stop putting up the score, 15-00, 15-15, 30-15 etc, after every point. Even people on Mars know how the scoring works and for those who don't they only need to watch two games to see how players win games. It would be good on the 'extras' to give an option to watch the game without any commentary, just crowd atmosphere.

There is plenty of football fever on the streets but more so on the tv, do not get me wrong...I like my football however I can't see why Wimbledon does not get the same coverage in terms of tv ads and digital extras.
I am sure Wimbledon has the potential to create a lot more hype amongst viewers.
It will be interesting to see how the BBC will manage to balance out coverage of the World Cup and Wimbledon during this clash between football and tennis in the next few weeks.

I'm saddened to see this year's live coverage will cease at 8pm each night, instead of the previous 8.30 or 8.40pm. Play can often last until about 9pm if things get delayed during the day, and the evening matches are often the most enjoyable to watch. Also, the doubles coverage is often only in the last half hour leading up to 8.30. Is this disappearing entirely?
Can you please reconsider this? Or at least keep coverage of some matches going on the BBCi channels until close of play? Otherwise we could have the maddening situation of trying to see the end of a tense, long match by looking over John Inverdale's shoulder and out the window of the press centre.

Can I say how silly I think it is to move the highlights to 8.00 pm?
Many of us who are to busy to watch live coverage are still busy at 8.00 pm so what this means is that this year, we won't see Wimbledon at all.
Your excuse that you want to get the younger viewers seems a bit weak - don't we 35 to 60s count any more? It's one thing to turn on for the end of a match that is reaching its conclusion live, quite something else to sit down for the highlights show.
I suspect that the truth is that you didn't really want to move your later evening programmes which tend to get disrupted when there are live over runs so those can now be absorbed into the highlights programme (which you say will get shortened if this happens) and you can then stick some more highlights on after Newsnight.
Frankly, if I were the All England club, I'd be quite cross - Wimbledon is almost the last really main sport that has shown loyalty to the BBC - and this to me looks like you're saying that you can't be bothered.
If nothing else, could you put the highlights show on later on the red button channel?
Geoffrey

I was very disappointed to see that Today at Wimbledon is on so early. Not only do we miss out on watching matches live but those who work will not even get the chance to see the highlights. Can you please review this situation and put the highlights back to the time it was last year (9.30pm)

I'd like to agree with Geoffrey. I work from 4pm until 9ish and I came home this evening looking forward to catching up with Tim, Greg and Andy on "Today at Wimbledon" and was very disappointed to find I'd missed it!
Even though I get to see some of the matches during the day, in recent years I've always enjoyed reviewing the day's action in the evening.
Can't you put it on the red button as Geoffrey suggests?

I am incensed that you have seen fit to change the time of the wimbledon highlights programme. There are in fact very few people that I know who are able to sit down to watch tv as early as 8.00pm. Mothers of young children are usually ensconsed in the bedtime routine and husbands commuting back from the city are often still not home. Wimbledon is only on for two weeks a year surely you can provide a later programme for two short weeks. We have to put up with seemingly endless football coverage practically all year round. I do not think it unreasonable to expect suitable coverage of the only tennis tournament you deem necessary to cover. I too am a licence payer!!!

I agree with Geoffrey and Yvonne about the tennis highlights being shown so early in the evening. How can you have a highlight's programme whilst play is still going on. It's like showing football highlights at half-time. I rang in to let my views known and was told "that it was because of the rain on Monday" (?); "highlights have always been at this time of the evening". When I asked why is it programmed when live World Cup matches were being televised I was told "the World Cup isn't on BBC tonight" ! Unbelievable!
Get your act together BBC and use your imagination I can see Sky getting the contract when it's next up for grabs!
Complain about this post
Moving the highlights to an earlier slot is a really appalling decision. Many tennis fans like myself who go to Wimbledon cannot possibly get home to see the highlights of the matches we have missed, when as last night the highlights are on before play has even finished. The BBC has always prided itself on it's coverage of Wimbledon, this year I feel they are using the early highlights slot in a ratings battle with the football on ITV. Come on BBC cater for the fans.

Please show more highlights and have less chat with "pundits".
Also ,during a match, please don't show close ups of players sitting at their chairs, wiping perspiration or eating; pan around the ground or show best rally of the game? In the highlights, miss out the breaks altogether and show more tennis.
Thanks.

I watched the 'strong highlights pacakage' yesterday - and was disappointed at the little tennis shown. I'd prefer less chat and expert opinion and actually be able to watch some tennis - not all of us are able to watch the live matches during the day.

sir,
i find it wholly unacceptable that the bbc interactrive service should begin coverage of the ljubicic-lopez game - the most exciting and highly anticipated first round match between two highly ranked players - and then cease transmission right in the middle of a thrilling comeback to take the match to a fifth and final set, just so they can show some British no-hoper on one channel and Hewitt wipe the floor with someon else on another. Ridiculous.

I am very disappointed that the BBC has moved the highlights programme to 8.00 pm. I don't have any opportunity to see the live matches and now don't get home in time to see the highlights. Very poor planning by the schedulers.

Of all the types of coverage available by far and away my favourite has to be the game by game commentary on the BBC Wimbeldon website. I don't know who writes it but who ever you are, you are a genius with words. Not only do I know whats happening but I get to have a giggle at the same time. Reminds me of the great days of cricket coverage: cream cakes and pigeons. My only complaint is that you can't comment on more than one match at a time or could you be cloned?

Why are the BBC getting people who do not play a sport professionally from commenting on it?
Jonathan Ross on tennis? Is he there to ask the men what their sexual fantasies are?
In the future I look forward to listening to Ricky Hatton on horse racing. Colin Montgomery on curling.
The BBC is losing all credibility.
A few years ago I directed a film interview for BBC 2 with Annabel Croft. Her one major gripe was commentators who had never played the game criticizing her.

The Wimbledon highlights are about the only television I watch all year, and I am very disappointed that they have been moved to such an early slot that I will not be able to see them at all.
Like other commentators I have a small child who is rarely asleep before 9.00pm in the summer - partly because I live on one of the northern isles of Scotland where the sun is still shining at 10.00pm.
Since I used to live in Wimbledon it is doubly disappointing to have to miss the action this year, and I hope this decision will be reversed next year.

Oh what have you done? Why have you moved the highlights programme to 8.00pm. When I get home from work at around 7.30pm I watch whatever live coverage there is. I used to then look forward to the highlights programme with Sue Barker later in the evening, giving me time to prepare/eat supper etc. Now the highlights programme just follows on from the live coverage. What a terrible decision. I have always enjoyed and praised the BBC's coverage of Wimbledon, hoping that Sky television would never ever get the franchise like all the other sports events. I am so dissapointed. If I get home a little later than usual I won't see any Wimbledon at all. I agree with other comments posted. This new schedule just doesn't work. Please reconsider.

Ron Taylor,
you and Annabel Croft are missing the point of what commentators are for. A main commentator doesn't have to have played the sport, in fact ideally he shouldn't have played the sport. He is there to describe the action in s neutral manner.
The co commentator(s) are there to give an opinion, they should have played the sport.

Thanks for the reply. Much appreciated.
I agree that it does not matter if the commentator has played the sport but they should keep their opinions on the action.
No one has a problem listening to John McEnroe. He was a most welcome addition to Wimbledon.
Annabel had one person in a match complaining about the length of her hair.

I also was very disappointed to see that Today at Wimbledon has been moved from 9.30pm this year. 8.00pm is far too early as like this evening the play has gone on until 9.00pm but if you wish to catch up with what else has gone on today you have to stay up till after 11pm.
Also if you get the priveledge of actually going to Wimbledon, it is nice when you return in the evening to catch up with the other results, but yesterday I didn't get back till 8.45pm, so I missed all the highlights.
Can we please have it moved back to 9.30pm next year.

I too am incensed that the BBC has changed the Wimbledon highlights programme to an earlier slot. What is the BBC thinking of? It does not make any sense to show highlights when live matches are still going on.
I urge the BBC to reconsider this unpopular decision.
And moving the highlights to 11.20pm last night (29/6) was equally unfair - too late! Surely you could have swapped programmes around. Wimbledon is only on for 2 weeks in the year. We have to put up with endless football coverage most of the year! Please consider the thousands of tennis fans too. I too am a licence payer!

I agree with all the earlier comments about the 8pm highlights time - it seems ill-thought out. Those of us with young children to put to bed, who in previous years could tune in at 9.30, now miss out altogether. (And, let's be honest, the stuff about trying to catch a younger audience doesn't stand up to scrutiny: are kids really going to sit down at 8pm to watch Wimbledon highlights?) Please put the programme back to 9.30 for the second week. (If you do, you will notice a marked rise in viewing figures.)

Another plea for Today at Wimbledon to be rescheduled back to 9.30 - I've seen almost none of this year's play, it's so disappointing. I, too, thought we could rely on the BBC for Wimbledon coverage - but this makes no sense at all. For the second week, if possible - and definitely for next year!

In contrast to other messages posted on this site, I wish to state that I consider the BBC's coverage of Wimbledon completely over the top. To show the tournament on BBC1 and BBC2 at the same time for hours on end, shows scant regard for those of us who generally admire BBC programmes but who think of tennis as being no more than an elongated form of ping-pong! Please remember the multitudes who are not sports fanatics.

Why is there no coverage of the doubles on the BBC website? I've looked using the search engine, on the front page - if we're lucky there's one mention in the diary and that's it. I can't even find the archived results. This is a ridiculous lack of attention to one of the more exciting aspects of the game. (For that matter, it would be good to see at least a mention of the junior tournaments, seniors etc.)

Please could the BBC not reemploy Jimmy Connors as commentator again next year. His 'mmms' after a good shot are just irritaing and tell us nothing. The comments he does make are unenlightening. I would like to agree with comments made by many others regarding the scheduling of the highlights programme. Far too early! It should be at 9.30 so that matches played past 8 can be watched to their conclusion. There is now no chance to see doubles matches which are usually very entertaining. Please re-consider all those working late or with young children (who are going to bed a bit later in the summer/hot weather). We don't get to sit down and relax until past 9 o'clock!

I've been moving house and so my watching of Wimbledon has been sketchy at best, so I haven't been able to sit down at watch the end credits properly.
However, I'm wondering if the song people are wondering about is "It's A Beautiful Day" by U2.
BTW, does anyone know where I can find a list of the commentators/pundits on the BBC this Wimbledon? I was watching a match last night and was annoyed that I couldn't figure out who the expert was!!!!

I would like to say that the change in schedule for the Wimbledon daily highlights to 8pm fails to consider the fairly large proportion of the working population who do not get home or are unable to watch TV until after 9pm.
Over the years, the 10/10.30pm slot has enabled me to catch up on the day's play when busy with children's activities and now when I work in London with a long daily commute back to Suffolk.
Does it really make sense to have the highlights so soon after the main day's play has finished? Surely this audience would not be interested in watching the highlights and, with the days so long, people are still outside doing other things (playing tennis??). Please remember that there are still many people who do NOT have interactive TV and who do NOT have home computers and who DO like to see SOME of the Wimbledon coverage (I have seen 1 out of 6 days' play).
How have others reacted to this? I would be interested to hear.
Many thanks

My first question is, what happened to Jelena Dokic? My next question is - why is Nadal allowed to take so long in between points? I feel that the shifting of today at Wimbledon has devalued the event emensely.
Like many other people who work full time I found the televised highlights a real treat and something that I could sit down to towards the end of the day and felt that I was fully in touch with events at the Championship. Now however the 8pm slot interferes with other activities and for me Wimbledon this year has lost something thanks to the poor programming schedules of the BBC. How can a programme feature the day's highlights be broadcast at a time when matches are still in progress?
Would the BBC consider televising World Cup Match of the Day at 9.45pm irrespective of added-time before the whistle is blown on 90 minutes; extra-time, penalty shoot-outs etc? I'm sure that this time would be a far more appropriate time for younger viewers to watch World Cup highlights and 9.45pm is surely a more popular slot than 11.50pm on weekdays.
I cannot help but think that the BBC has sold us short with Wimbledon this year.

Yet another complaint, I'm afraid, about the scheduling of the highlights programme at 8pm. This really is far too early - working people and those with families aren't ready to sit down then. Please return it to a sensible time for next year. I'm sure there is an element of a ratings war with the world cup - but I'm sure I'm not the only football-hater to say "no contest!"

I wonder if there is anybody who would agree that there has to come a ruling on the screaming of players like Sharapova. Her screaming is by no means involuntary. The length of her scream is determined by the length of the flight of the ball. She uses it as a extra weapon in her game to intimidate her opponent. In my opinion it can be compared to the cheating ways of the Portuguese footballteam.

Just wondering if anyone else is becoming exasperated with the BBC commentary on the tennis?
Jimmy Connors sort of grunts at the end of every single point - once you tune into it, it becomes very annoying.
John Lloyd goes from stating the obvious to talking complete rubbish. Almost all his predictions for the matches so far have been wrong, and saying there is absolutely no one left in the men's draw to trouble Federer is absurd while Nadal is winning so easily.
Andrew Castle is just nauseating.
John McEnroe is the only decent one left.

my wife and I agree with the complaints about the early start of "Today at Wimbledon". It seems to us to be obvious that people would want to see a round up once most of the play had finished rather than while it is still going on. Your response to the complaints does not hold water. There is absolutely no reason why you can't have a "full and complete" roundup lasting one hour, starting at 2130.If you really must change something which doesn't need changing, why not put the round-up on digital?

The doubles in late evening were always fantastic to watch, but now not only are we being deprived of them. by the time we settle down after doing all the family chores, the highlights show is over too. As far back as the days of Harry Carpenter and Des Lynam. they were always on at around 9.30pm Also not everybody has access to the interactive service, especially pensioners. I'm not aware that the BBC have announced this but I think this counts as a result.
Hopefully, next year, all viewers will have the opportunity to watch the highlights programme at a sensible time - or alternatively, a rather more detailed explanation of why they have to be moved. If the ratings for T@W have been falling off, then I'm sure we can be told that. If they haven't why move it?
I must admit to being disappointed that no-one could have actually commented on this.

Today's discussion between Sue Barker and John McEnroe reminded me of Clive James' article in 'The Observer' in July 1979 where he refers to Jimmy Connors' 'use' of the grunt. I quote: "Meanwhile Jimmy Connors had unleashed his new tactic, the EARLY GRUNT.....Now he has taken to grunting loudly at the instant of hitting the ball instead of just afterwards. Confused opponents try to hit the grunt instead of the ball! "
