Simon Mayo Simon Mayo Presenter

And Friday dawns cloudy and unpromising. Builders swarm, children depart and parents shamble. Feels like another duvet day again (this is becoming a trend). But it is impossible to have one when you have roofers, tilers and plasterers outside, aware of every movement. I actually dress up a little because they're here to be honest, and appear to be busy and serious. While providing top quality biscuits of course.

The other reason for busyness is work of course and the small matter of the movie show on 5Live and the mighty ARF for 2. Ben Affleck is our guest and Argo is his film. It's a fantastic film which is both a tense 70s adventure and Hollywood satire. If it wasn't a true story, it would be dismissed out of hand but its tale of 6 American Embassy workers in Tehran who escape when their building is occupied, prompting the CIA to try to rescue them under the guise of a mock sci-fi movie, is all fact. And that sentence was way too long, apologies.

Then to R2 central and let's kick off the ARF with a song (chooses year from ARF hat) 1978. No idea if that is any better than last week but over to you pop pickers.
Have a decisive and clear-thinking Friday. See you after 5.
Oh, I'm not here on Monday as I'm in Cornwall doing that other thing I do. But only briefly.

#38 - Zoe - I can't think of anything off Ivor's albums that COULD be played on DT. Even to suggest one would risk breaking the * key to render the title acceptable. What about NEXT Friday - how much would you have to pledge to be successful ?

#39 - I suspect the photo is misleading - it was obviously taken in summer. Nonetheless, it isn't a good example to set when cyclists are so vulnerable. They need to take some responsibilities for their own safety - it isn't all down to the motorists. I cycle at times and always wear hi-vis things. I've also done a lot of horse riding on the road and apply the same responsibilities there especially when an animal's life is at risk if drivers become frustrated with irresponsible riders' behaviour.

I reckon Vildeen might have nailed it with his Sniff and the Tears suggestion, Drivers Seat.. When Simon took over on Drivetime, the first song he played was Bruce Springsteens Born To Run, but, Simon being Simon, that was always going to be his opener. The real decision would have been what to play second. Guess what that was.

I'd happily second Karon's Nick Lowe recommendation (again!).

As for 1978, one song sprang instantly to mind (having recently watched a cover band absolutely rocking this in a soggy field in Kent),

Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick - Ian Dury & The Blockheads

Oh damn! 1978 and I've only just had chance to get ont blog so I'm too late. Along with 1979 I think this is my favouritest year. Not had chance to read suggestions but I bet there are some crackers. Too late to post my own now and I have to rush off out again anyway.

#39 just taking a break from chisling out a groove in me wall for me gaspipe....

    Ter say:

#40... #39 'ere - A fully agree again it all comes down ter simple common sense... That sadly is lacking in all areas of the road....
Often the batteries ave nearly run out of juice that's why those lights become dim!!!!!!!!
I meself 'ave gotta fine set with the latest technology of flashing led lights... I've tested them and standing back from a distance they're really bright.
I carry a spare set of batteries with me and also i've got TWO flashing rear lights!!!!!!!
In fact am so bright... A few times ave come around a corner at speed and a car coming in the opposite direction 'as slammed on due to suddenly thinking am an emergency vehicle what with me bright flashing front light!!!!!!
On top of this a often put me 'and behind me ter chack the flash near me rear.... Just ter check me batteries are nice!!!!!!!
On top of this a keep me lenses and reflectors clean!!!!!!!!!!!

Am not boasting or saying am an overly nice cyclist.... All am saying is it just takes simple common sense!!!!!!!!

PS When a was 12 a got so fed up of cars cutting me up... A fitted me bicycle with a FULL blast red air 'orn!!!!!!!!!!
If ever a got cut up.... The driver gotta 'eart attack!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In fact a enjoyed getting cut up then!!!!!!

    ALL - 100% TRUE!!!!!!

Back again - sorry, I didn't say 'hullo' before, where are my manners?

Nothing to do with the ARF or anything Drivetime but I need help (careful!). Daughter came home from Brownies last night with a quiz on musicals - you get a clue and how many letters in the title, eg Able Able (3,3) is Can Can - get it? Well, there are 40 questions and I think I've done them all but 3 which are now taking over my every thought so I thought who better to help......? Here goes.

    - Matey (5)
    - Existing Existence (9,4)
    - Depressed Island (4,6)

Can anyone help me? I just know they're going to be really obvious when I know what they are, duh!

    Thanks in advance.

    SE x

#51 - Erica - Depressed Island is Blue Hawaii, I think. I'd guess the second word of the Existing Existence is probably 'LIFE'.

    Hope that's of some help.
