Up with the lark

Window open? Window shut? Hint of a breeze or airless night? Woken by the police helicopter 4 times or blissful silence? So many decisions, so early in the day. What seems like a sensible choice at bedtime appears reckless in the small hours. At times like these I remember why I'm a spring and autumn sort of chap really. Weather when you might need a cardigan later seems more natural. Not that I'm wishing the year away you understand-those Hyde Park travel rugs are only a few weeks away anyway-my summer wardrobe is only just coming together (ironing a few t-shirts).
So today we welcome Richard Thompson, the greatest guitarist I've ever seen play live. It was the Cambridge Folk Festival a few years ago and he put on a virtuoso performance. Rolling Stone named him as one of the top 20 guitarists of all time. When he got his lifetime achievement award at the Folk Awards a few years back, it was Mark Knopfler who presented it, claiming that Richard's style was the one he had copied/been inspired by. There's a new album called Acoustic Classics and is, as you might imagine, all-new solo versions of songs across his career. I saw him last week heading for the test match at Lords; I might need to cheer him up a bit by the time he's here at 6.
And until then, how about RORY McILROY oldies? What a brilliant performance at Royal Liverpool to win his first Open Championship over the weekend. All he needs, to go with the claret jug, is a bunch of well-chosen songs in his honour. That's your bit...
