Here again. Weekend gone, another Monday to defeat and send scurrying back to its corner. A month till Christmas but only 27 days till the nights get shorter again. These numbers matter even if winter hasn't started just yet. I tweeted this fact a while back and was amazed how people fell on this information, clearly in need of some good news. Ring out those Solstice bells!

Actually it felt a bit like Christmas this weekend as their aren't many days when three generations sit around watching TV. But we had compulsory Dr Who time on Saturday, watching the show itself and then the Mark Gatiss drama from Thursday. Both fantastic. It takes something big to get us all watching together but then the Morecambe and Wise doc started and we were off again (Homeland recorded, Match of the Day avoided). Is it Boxing Day?

On the assumption it isn't, we'll offer you another first class legal thriller with 'Identical' by Scott Turow.   This is a gripping tale of dark family rivalries, shadowy politics and hidden secrets. And people called called Zeus and Kronon and things like that. Scott at 6.

And oldies please (a favourite topic really). Michael Morpurgo has suggested that schools should have a 'story time' part of the day, when they just sit and listen and contemplate with no tests on the way. This seems (I think) a relatively uncontroversial idea. So STORYTIME songs please will do some of his work for him.

Have a cheer-filled and thoroughly lovely Monday, see you after 5.

    Morning all.

#112 Jennie - your mention of crackling has me salivating even at this early hour. An absolutely irrestible foodstuff.

Lady_Bird and Billie - Lady C and I are also University Challenge addicts. We don't always tot up the points but usually it seems the questions are weighted more towards one of us than the other. We watch on iThingy, and whilst I'm generally happy to let it play Lady C is more prone to reaching for the pause button whilst she searches the grey matter for the answer that's on the tip of her tongue. I'll admit to occasionally doing the same...

And then we watch Only Connect, which is possibly my favourite quiz show...

Morning all. Gosh it's cfold here!

Hoffs, hope you make a speedy recovery and that mini Hoffs improvement wasn't only temporary.
Deebee, hoping all goes well for you and that you're back soon.
Amelia congratulations on the job, but don't forget to keep posting. I enjoy your posts. Shame about Smelly, but I'm sure you and he will be fine!
Erica, no news I'm afraid, which I take to be a negative. There are more irons in the fire still though.

See you all on the other side....

Amelia - Congratulations on the new job! Sorry it will reduce your blogging time though, and also that your house guest has had to go home. :-(

I just watched The Gift of the Gab, and most entertaining it was too. I did wonder a little about Simon's comment about writing a blog and doing social media, in addition to the playing of records bit, which he really loves. I'm sure he didn't mean it in a begrudging way though, or maybe he did... Simon??? I did wonder if a little blogging weariness had crept in, with him listing the contents of his kitchen, instead of choosing titles relating to the events/guests of the day. I am probably reading far too much into all of this. But as long as Simon keeps doing what he's doing on air, then it's all good.

Deebee - Best wishes to you for the surgery, and I hope it's nothing too major, nor too painful to recover from. Here's hoping you are back with us as soon as possible, and as soon as you are able. x

Stressed Erica - I remember reading To Kill A Mockingbird in secondary school, but it had a very profound effect on me. I recall that our English homework, after reading the book, was to write 2 newspaper articles both reporting on the trial of Tom Robinson. One article was to be written as if for a newspaper the black community would read, and the other for the white community. That piece really made me think about race and prejudice in a way I had barely considered before. I remember getting an A for that homework, and I still have it somewhere!

I remember a lot of the books mentioned here today, from the Roald Dahl's of childhood, to the slightly more serious books of the pre-teen and teen years. Lord of the Flies was another book that has stayed with me. So many great stories, and characters, with so much to say if we only care to listen.

BTW The mister was, and indeed still is, a big fan of The Stranglers, and we managed to get tickets to see Hugh Cornwell this Thursday. He is touring with an acoustic set of Stranglers songs and some of his own solo material. Has anyone else seen him during this tour?

Well done to all who got menshes, I only caught Ms P.S.L's ;D

    Goodnight one and all.
