Felix Felicis?

Simon Mayo | 09:54 UK time, Monday, 6 August 2012

And good morning to you. Welcome to new bloggers and the wise old blogvets of many years standing. Here we are again with that awareness that this time next week, it's all over. We'll be kicking our heels and wondering what we are supposed to do now.

In the meantime we have another week of six-packs, rippling muscles ("why don't you look like that?") tears, anthems, medals, podia, anthems, "how do you feel?" being asked over and over again, smiles, singing, flags, souvenir editions of the newspapers, chariots of fire, visitors liking us, gold, silver , bronze, the Queen, James Bond, Elbow (feel free to add to this list) and John Inverdale's choice of shirts.

I caught most of the events of Saturday in between helping Mrs Mayo launch her latest ceramics exhibition in Suffolk - my ambition is to be a kept husband. Loads of prosecco drunk, much porcelain purchased. Then we retired to the pub to watch Jess Ennis, Mo Farrah and Greg Rutherford. It all felt very un-British.

If you read Harry Potter you might remember the Felix Felicis which grants whoever drinks it unusually good luck. Had our team drunk this liquid luck? Had a spell been cast across the land? How long can it last?

Chris is flying in the O park every morning (and that's every morning - is this the new Radio 2 schedule being written here?) and we are back at one of our favourite venues - at Greenwich by the Thames and the Equestrian events.

Matt will keep you updated on all the medals of the day, assorted happy ticket holders will wander past and folk clad in purple will try to help us as whatever our concern; I'm thinking of taking my ironing today to see if they can help with that too.

And oldies please for USIAN BOLT, THE FASTEST MAN IN THE WORLD. And it's 50 years of Jamaican independence today too. Great tunes please!

Have a spiffing and top-hole Monday, see you after 5.

    Good Morning All :)

Blimey, what an Olympics we're having! A jaded old cynic like me, has been very happy to be proved wrong. It's great to see team GB doing so well.

Still busy here, there will be no let up until September (the 4th to be exact - not that I'm counting down, or anything ;-))

Hope everyone is doing o.k, that was some scary weather in certain parts of the country yesterday. We escaped with only a few drops of rain, but I know others weren't so fortunate.

Simon, a message from Sheffield. A good theme today, and I'll be back with some ideas in a bit, if circumstance allows, but here's an idea. Why not start todays show with 'Jessica' by The Allman Brothers. That would be most lovely. And, if it's good enough for Clarkson.... actually, just ignore this last bit.

  • Comment number 29.

#23 - Gill - if you are into the equestrian stuff, perhaps your blog name should be 'Gill - WINageegee' !

  • Comment number 30.

I would second Paul's request for Jessica to start the show. I think she's great. Was reading yesterday that she still turns out for her club when she's available, even though they are at a lower tier of club athletics, and that the opponents get a bit of shock when she gets off the team coach at Cleethorpes and other such places the club visits.

I love the fact that even massive football fans are noting that the over-paid prima donna, big-time charlies aren't coming out of this fortnight very well :-)

I used to have to walk a given distance up and down the hospital corridor with it switched on/off and times were compared. Having watched all of the athletics recently, I should be well-trained and maybe in contention for a medal!!

    Hi All!

We went to Cutty Sark on Saturday as we wanted to see the new and improved ship. Also took a ride on the Thames cable car, that was rather splendid. We watched Ennis and Phelps on the big screen at City Hall, so it was a big London Olympic Fest for the B' family. Never use this word and it works:
    TEAM GB IS AWESOME!!

Yippee a mention on the first proper days of my holidays and WE HAD DINNER IN THE GARDEN. First time for months and there is little that makes me happier than eating outside. Fish cakes, linguine and lots and lots of salad stuff for those interested.

Congratulations for all the other mentions (I love hearing other bloggers name almost as much as my own). Born to Run is the best use of a certain girls name ever ;-). Just home from walking the smelly surrogate dog to hear it.

All this was caused by the war mongering that Blair did with Bush.... Bringing the British name inter disrepute.... Coupled with bad goverment and things like the way nobody votes for us in The Eurovision Gig.... It sadened me.... 'onestly being a positive person.... Seeing no votes and a 'oplessness wiyth our politicians..... And all this talk of broken Britain.... A truely felt sad and what is 'appening to our once 'great' Britain!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A noticed 'ow abroad like in Ukriane and Thailand yer see the national flag EVERYWHERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In Thailand yer see pictures of their adored King..... EVERYWHERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But in the UK.... There was nothing.... Very rare yer see a union jack!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And with our press that seemed 'ellbent on bringing bad feeling to our country by always reporting negatives 'appenings.... Such as madness like people being told ter take down theit unoin jack a sit's politically incorreeeect!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BUT.... 2012..... WHATTA YEAR ter fix Britain!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My goodness after the Royal Wedding last year as a warmer that was so 'eartwarming ter see people do still love our royal family (remember all the gutter press over the past 15 years or so saying we should do away with our monachy..... What MADNESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
but sadly there seems alot of simple easily influenced people in our society who read this rubbish and believe it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Many a time at work i've argued with collegues (who probably by the daily rags) (a don't as a don't wanter read the misery, gossip and filth!!!!) 'ow great our monachy is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Then came the Queen's Diamond Jubilee...... WHATTA WONDERFUL sight to see so many people waving union jacks.... All over the UK streets and towns I see while on my travels with photos of The queen and the union jack dorned across streets!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

At last some pride is coming back to Britain!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Britain that 'ad lost it's 'great'!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And now with The Olympics..... WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is just AMAZING what is 'appening..... The records being broken!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The stories of the first time in this we win 104 years we win a medal..... The first time in that for 52 years we win a medal..... The most successful they are in such and such!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's just amazing that the whole world is watching us..... Our relatively small island putting on a show for the world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The opening ceremony was magical, funny, entertaining and spine tingling...... An amazing spectacle of what was and is great about GREAT BRITAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The GREAT 'as well and truely returned to our country and DAMN IT a can now go abroad so, so, so, so prud ter be British after what our incredibly talented and 'ar dworking olympic athletes 'ave done for our country!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I AM AMAZED AT WHAT I AM WITNESSING AT THIS ONCE IN A LIFETIME AMAZING AMAZMENT OF AMAZMENTATIOALLY AMAZMENTATIONING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Good morning,

Bingo, Yes. Indeed. Gold! Can't shout it out loud like you at this time in the morning but totally agree with the sentiment of your posts.

Sounded like a good night for bloggers last night. Well done all. Did you hear our Esteemed Leader's comment about the Bloggers' 'Lympic names? Ha ha!

Gill, I'm sure I heard him giggle too.

Amelia, Al Fresco dining. Sounds delightful.

Sir Kitt, Hope day two goes okay.

A night without sport tonight. Taking Big Girl to see Mamma Mia up in London.

Following on from the diving last night Mr 41 (39 actually) is off to the football semi final at Wembley tonight. He rolled in about 1.30 this morning having met up with a mate for a few post speedo watching beers (hence the reason I can't join in with Bingo's shout).

Where's our favourite Gymnast this week? Bit concerned he might be in some discomfort due to chaffing lycra.

    Have a good day. x

#60 - Gill - it must have been the amendment to your 'Lympic name that made all the difference ! Amused by Simon's comment about our new names, but it does suggest that the blog is read with some care on a regular basis. This is supported by comments he has made regarding bloggers suffering bereavement, health scares etc.

On which front - J-Ennis - excellent news about your condition. Let's hope it continues that way.

  • Comment number 71.

Thanks for the mention. Had been feeling very frustrated as I'd desperately wanted tickets for the show jumping team final, but hadn't been able to get any. So delighted for Nick, Ben, Scott and Peter and well deserved. Special joy at Nick's double clear, as he was my childhood hero. Best wishes go out to Carl, Laura, Charlotte and Richard today in the dressage.
