The perfect start

Simon Mayo | 08:02 UK time, Friday, 2 March 2012

Yes yes. Friday and very lovely it is too. Chris opens the shop with Year of the Cat and all is well. If I remember right, Al Stewart was a guitarist in Tony Blackburn's backing band for a while. Can this be true? I think it's right. What was Al thinking at the time I wonder? Al was magnificent for a number of albums; I think it was On The Border that got me into Year of the Cat and then off on a voyage of discovery to his other stuff. Songs about Nostradamus and the Russian invasion of Germany in WW2 sounded very profound at the time and I still like the Modern Times album. I saw him at the Royal Concert Hall in Nottingham and he was v. talented if a tad eccentric. The eccentricity-I think it's fair to say-has continued, but I still love the fey English voice when he's on the radio. Nice one Chris.
Here we go then with a Friday jaunt to 5 Live and 2 hours of movie chat with guests John Cusack who stars in The Raven, a new movie about Edgar Allen Poe and Andrew Stanton who wrote the Toy Story trilogy, directed Wall.E and has just directed his first live action film John Carter, based on the Edgar Rice Burroughs books. The 2 literary Edgars tackled in one week! That's at 2 and then, would you believe it, it's that ARF moment again and cute kids, hen-nighters in cars and party planners of all sorts queue up to chose top Friday anthems. But they don't chose the ARF opener, oh no. Win the ARF CROWN! Choose a winner!
Have a solvent and reassuring Friday, see you after 2&5.

Good Morning Simon, Team and Blogpoppets

Testing, testing... is the blog working again now? Let's see.

For the ARFO crown I would like to respectfully suggest:

TWIST AND SHOUT by the Beatles

    CRAZY HORSES by the Osmonds

COME UP AND SEE ME (MAKE ME SMILE) by Cockney Rebel

NO MORE HEROES by the Stranglers

  • Comment number 2.

Morning Simon, team, NYM, Matt of the BAIU (PLEASE FIX THE GREEN BOX PROBLEM!), and oh-so-patient bloggers

I'm afraid to say I missed the show last night, and lost patience with the blog, so am feeling very disconnected.

So in the same spirit, I'll just throw caution and respect to the wind, and go in with all guns blazing...

*cue music from The Good The Bad and The Ugly*

    For today's ARFO, my suggestions:

GIMME SOME LOVIN' - Spencer Davis Group

    And if all else fails...

JOHNNY BE GOOD - Chuck Berry

    Good day all

  • Comment number 3.

    Morning all.

Fog clearing to give a lovely day here I think. The last few days have been manic but I hope I'll get more time to blog today :) So I'm off to think abtou ARFO and I'll be back.....

  • Comment number 4.

    Morning all

Enough of all those anthems. I respecfully suggest something alternative for a starter:

HOW CAN I TRY - The Deep Dark Woods

Soothe the masses stuck in traffic!

  • Comment number 5.

    Hi all,

After a crazy and disjointed start to the week I finally kicked back with the Stones mid-week and now all is well again. Please can we finish the week in the same way?

Paint it Black has been echoing round my head for the past few days, but if you want something more cheery try Jumping Jack Flash.

    Hi Simon and everyone.

Oooooh! Year of the cat .....I love that tune Simon and Matthew and Son and Everything is Beautiful both by surnames of Stevens, however not related. It's hard to believe Ray Stevens the singer of Everything is Beautiful did that odd track "The Streak" also!

Thanks for your FB reply Deebee, good news about your mum.

    And now for the ARFO:

    1. LIVING ON A PRAYER - Bon Jovi
    2. BAT OUT OF HELL - Meat Loaf
    3. LOVE IN AN ELEVATOR - Aerosmith

Friday is such a lovely word...Monday is a nasty word!

    Have a lovely day.

    Mandy ;)

    Good morning all

Fog lingered all day yesterday and is still with us this morning. Rather a pity because son and daughter-in-law are having a few days holiday with us.
Back to the task in hand and putting forward suggestions for todays AFR opener:-

    Enjoy the day

Good morning blogpoppets one and all. Well spring has sprung – but for how long? As a tribute to our very own British Monkee how about:

See you all later – but I’ve got Scottish visitors coming so I’d better switch the central heating off and collect the free-range haggis from the rare-breeds butcher

  • Comment number 11.

10 minutes of green boxing to start the day which no amount of refreshing could budge. Such fun! >:(

Good morning Simon, team, Matt and the BAIU collective (help!) and patient poppets all.

The blog feels out of sorts, so to speak. I agree with JBG about feeling disconnected - both literally and metaphorically.

Spring is springing, lambs are gamboling, blackbirds are chirping their little hearts out and with a skip in my step I log on to share the joys of the world only to be given a great big flick on the nose by a green box or a pink box or a sign saying closed for repairs or lunch or a snooze or some other such nonsense. It's all a bit deflating really.

Anyhoo, enough of my grumpy old woman grumbles. I hope all are well.

Deebee, I hope your Mum is feeling lots better soon and you have a good trip if you are visiting this weekend.

Autumn Gale, seems you've had a tough week.. TGIF! :)

Dougal, hope your cough has finally disappeared, don't want you hacking all over the new king/queen when you hand over the crown later ;)

    My ARFO today is

  • Comment number 12.

#11 Is ... the Sound of Silence, Jilly?!

    Good morning all

Chilly and misty here, but the sun seems to be trying to break through!

Off to think about an ARFO.

    Back later (green box permitting)

    Tortie x

  • Comment number 13.

Ha! Is that what I get for moaning? My post cut off in its prime?

I repeat... (after waiting 3 minutes)(then getting the pink box)(then the green box!!)

    My ARFO today is ...

  • Comment number 14.

morning Jilly I had my three worder last night 'seen first lambs' you can't help but smile and feel good about spring coming xx

Deebee hope your mum is doing well following her op?

The blog gremlins are a pain and do spoil the flow and before you know it that cba feeling slips in!

    PSL xx

  • Comment number 15.

Morning all, my quest for the crown starts with....

St Elmo's Fire (Man in Motion) by John Parr

    Heres hoping

  • Comment number 16.

    Good Morning All

I, too, felt very disconnected last night. Tried to post for hours – all during the show.

Kept getting BOXES – pink, green, green, pink – then a yellow one asking me to take part in a survey as to what I thought of the blog! I declined – didn’t think I was in the right frame of mind!

    More green boxes this morning!

Anyway, It’s a truly beautiful Spring morning here.

ARFO SUGGESTIONS – if I ever manage to post – rather eclectic I know –

Have Nicetimes – try not to let the blog get you down!

  • Comment number 17.

Anyone would have thought that I'd have had enough time to check my post!

  • Comment number 18.

    Morning all

Chilly and slightly grey day in the West Riding, but could be warmed by eiher of these for AFRO

Following on from yesterday, daughter's Paddington outfit didn't win :(, but was second. The winner was her best friend who came as a Transformer, with proper wheels which did transform into a car. So I think that's fair enough!

    Good Friday all

  • Comment number 19.

    Morning all

As Brandon hasn't suggested it yet, please may I go for DIGNITY by Deacon Blue .. my boats are back in the water, safety equipment and sails due back today and sailing starts again next weekend ..

    Set it up again ..

  • Comment number 20.

Good Morning all, from a murky West Somerset.

I hope its going to clear, as I cant even see beyond the hedge over the road.

Well, two weeks away, leaves me with a fair bit to get on with, so will post my ARF and be back later, much later I fear!!

*** Twilight *** by ELO please Simon, NYM, whoever really.

This green box thingy, is it sort of blue, with a green trim?

    Have a good Friday everyone.

    Happy Days.

    Happy Days indeed :)

  • Comment number 21.

    Good Morning All;

Well now, it's been a tough week in this household, and that looks set to continue for a while. I agree with JBG & Jilly, I also feel a bit disconnected from the blog these days, it's not just the technical problems, something seems to be missing. Maybe it's because some regular bloggers aren't with us, and others are too busy to join in as much as they would normally do :-/ I can't see me having much time to blog though, not for as long as things are so unsettled here.

Anyway, enough of the melancholic moaning, and on to the ARFO choosing! I was tempted to go for a bit of...

In recognition of his UK Eurovision bid, but I can't see me getting anywhere with that one. So then I thought I would like to hear a bit of cheesy goodness...

And failing that, a good rocky tune to kick things off...

To erase memories of that X Factor personage's cover.

Have a good Friday & Weekend one and all xxxx

  • Comment number 22.

    Good morning everyone.

    Blog working?

    My ARFO request:

  • Comment number 23.

    ARFO Suggestion Collection for today:

BAD CASE OF LOVING YOU (Doctor Doctor) - Robert Palmer

FREE ELECTRIC BAND - Albert Hammond

    TOMMY GUN - The Clash

  • Comment number 24.

    Good Morning All,

Good luck with the DB song Alison.

    Suggestions for ARFO

    'Rave On' Buddy Holly

    'Oh Boy' Buddy Holly

    Have a good day everybody

  • Comment number 25.

It seems we're all a bit disconbobulated at the moment :/

I've no doubt "this too shall pass" and that we, and the blog, will return to form ...

In the meantime, it's great to be able to dip in and out (when the various coloured boxes allow it) and have a moment or two of blogging-goodness, however brief it may be .....

So ARFO - we've had a few weeks of rock so I go along with the tribute to Davy Jones so nominate my favourite Monkees track:
A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You

If that doesn't work then 2 mins of glory from:
Do Do Ron Ron - The Crystals

  • Comment number 26.

#19 - Alison I once called the ARF to request Dignity as my (Scottish) wife, also Alison (I'm not married to you am I?), has it as her favourite record. I knew we were struggling to get it played when the repsonse was: 'Who are Deacon Blue?'

  • Comment number 27.

    Good morning everyone

A bit late today having been busy making baby type cookies and decorating a cute baby shower cake for a friend's daughter, whose baby is expected in a few weeks!
Who started this daft craze for baby shower parties?

    My ARFO suggestions....

HEY ROCK AND ROLL ~ Showaddywaddy

SUGAR BABY LOVE ~ The Rubettes

    25 or 6 to 4 ~ Chicago

  • Comment number 28.

    Good morning all.

    ARFO suggestion -

There definately seems to be a 'gloom' over the blog lately. Is it just that we're coming out of winter and are feeling a little jaded and needing some sun and light to cheer us up?

Clocks go forward in 3 weeks - not long!!

  • Comment number 29.

I also meant to say I enjoyed Al Stewart this morning but CE had to spoil it by explaining why he played a 7 minute song - we don't need to know Chris, thanks all the same!

  • Comment number 30.

    # 19 Hi Rostronposkett - sorry, but I'm married to Mr from Eastleigh :0)

I've actually had it chosen as the ARFO, only to receive a phone call back from Andy the producer (now with the Breakfast Show) to say they wouldn't be playing it that day as there was a sailing-disaster story on the 5pm news ..

Brandon and I regularly choose it though .. here's hoping

  • Comment number 31.

#28 Jennie, I think the 'gloom' you mentioned, over the blog, might be connected to the lost continuity and constant frustration caused when we can't post messages with the green box thing, if we want to quickly respond to what someone has said and if people are at work or busy doing 'life' stuff, they/we don't always have the time to just keep waiting and persevering with trying to post a message and the spontaneity is lost!

  • Comment number 32.

Perhaps the 'gloom' will lift now the fog's clearing outside. So how about...

    It's a Beautiful Day ~ Queen

  • Comment number 33.

Yes, I've been feeling a bit disjointed blog-wise lately too. And I'm as 'guilty' as others of not posting quite so much recently as I have been known to do. Think it's partly to do with the blog problems, but also partly general busy-ness in life... These things seem to go very much in phases though. I've been around this blog since nearly the beginning - people come and go, there are busy times and quiet times. I'm sure it will pick up again in due course.

And I for one feel very much committed to this blog - it is still by far the best online forum I have ever come across!

  • Comment number 34.

Just about morning here with fog AGAIN in West Cornwall. Second Dougal's choices. I too thought I'd done a banned post last afternoon as it went down for nearly 3 hours and so gave up. Feel like RipVanWinkle.
Can we try Running with the Devil by Van Halen or
Bridge over Troubled Water Simon & Garfunkel for all perservering and patient BLOGGERS here, there and everywhere stuck in the ether. Cheers and wishing all a great weekend.

  • Comment number 35.

    Back again!

I, too, am guilty of not posting as often as I should. I have been trying harder of late, to get here, but the green box has got in the way recently.

I haven't noticed a 'gloom' , I think it's more as Deebee says - there are quiet times and busy ones, and 'real' life does sometimes get in the way!

I had a lovely surprise last night; Mr T had ordered "Itch" for me, originally inteded for my birthday in a couple of weeks, but he gave it to me yesterday because he thought I wouldn't want to wait, and he didn't want me to buy it myself!

  • Comment number 37.

    Hi all. Busy. Foggy. Busy.

    Two ARFO suggestions:
    ROACHFORD - Cuddly Toy

    INXS - New Sensation

Good weekend all. Good ARFO luck. See you Monday!

  • Comment number 38.

    What green box???????

    Good Afternoon All,

Glad to hear your Mum is ok, Deebee.

Well Chris started the week with a medley of fab 80's tunes how about closing the week with these ARFO suggestions:

    Karma Chameleon by Culture Club

    Take On Me by A-Ha

Everybody Wants To Rule The World by Tears For Fears

    Rio by Duran Duran

Can't stop, cakes to bake, house to clean and dog to walk.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend whatever your plans.

    madchick x

  • Comment number 39.

The problems with the blog - multicoloured boxes - isn't helping with the continuity, as you say Florence. And people who pop in to blog from work don't have time to keep trying to post so it loses any momentum it had. Hopefully Matt (BAIU) will sort that side of it soon and we can get on with blogging as it should be done!

By the way Florence, according to the RT (otherTV listings etc ) Richard Allinson is doing the breakfast show next Tuesday - we live in hope!!

  • Comment number 40.

I don't particularly think there is a gloom either, just a sense of disconnection... Anyway whichever way you're feeling, this should raise a smile for doggy/animal lovers

  • Comment number 41.

#35 My copy if Itch has just arrived.

  • Comment number 42.

    #41 of even...

  • Comment number 43.

#19 Alison - I envy you getting your boats ready for the sailing season- how many, I wonder? We have to wait a couple more weeks up here Oop North and our friends from Scotland have to wait even longer before they can set sail up the Clyde.

Never mind, the cake for the April Scuttlebut Cruise is made and steeping in brandy.

  • Comment number 44.

#39 Jennie... sooo pleased that Richard Allinson is doing next Tuesday's Breakfast show... I would be happy for him to do it all the time when Chris is off, instead of boring Richard Madeley... or if I'm being honest, every week! ;o)

Glad you have your ITCH book, Deebee! I doubt you'll be putting yours for sale on ebay, like several people have already done... and one is more than £20....

  • Comment number 45.

Good ARFternoon Each! Is it too late to suggest...

    'Roxette' by Dr Feelgood?

Quite surprised to see you are still willing to mention both 2 and 5 in the same sentence, Simon. ;0)

  • Comment number 46.

For a change let's have Incommunicado by MArillion to start ARF.
    Nujja from (sunny) Lincolnshire

P.S. totally agree with Florence (above) - Richard Allinson is a class act

  • Comment number 47.

Jennie and Nujja, it looks like Richard Allinson will be standing in for CE on Monday as well as Tuesday! :o))

  • Comment number 48.

    # 43 I work for a sailing club with 5 yachts .. a 36 ft, 2 x 34 and 2 x 29 .. it's my first winter in post and I've been amazed at how busy I've been, with all the safety, maintenance etc .. hence lack of time to blog .. look me up on FB through mutual friends x

  • Comment number 49.

    Good ARFternoon everyone!

Late today. Mr P is at home and we have been out and about doing the weekly shop, buying water butts and admiring Ziggy's handiwork which Mr P hasn't seen in daylight this week.

Still haven't had a green, pink or any other coloured box. Sympathies to those that are suffering it. I will try not to feel smug.

Foggy start to the day and it hasn't really lifted. Feels cold as well, although that could be just a reaction to the gorgeousness that was yesterday. My washing actually dried on the line!

Is JBG about? The cat poo didn't work. Moles still about and cats now think those flower beds are for pooping in! On the positive front, that's meaning less use of litter trays which they have been addicted too since we moved.

Out for a drink tonight to our most local local. I prefer the village pub which is a mile away but this other one is 200 yards so easier on a dark evening. It was the subject of The Hotel Inspector back in October. Clientele aren't really my type (flash cars, lots of bling) but it is the most local local.

Hope all are doing well. Sorry I haven't been as frequent as I would like!

  • Comment number 50.

I was really pleased when I heard Richard Allinson was standing in for Chris next week... until I realised that I'll be at Mum's so probably won't be able to hear him. Anybody would think he's avoiding me... ;o)

  • Comment number 51.

I'll switch over from radio 4 to listen to Richard Allinson next week so thanks for the heads up. Never gotten the green or any coloured boxes..hmmm, I wonder why?

Itch being sold on ebay 2 days after it hits the shelves in shops has nver crossed my mind. I must spend more time out from under this rock.

    Come on sunny, spring-like weekend!

    LB, x

  • Comment number 52.

Deebee, meant to say that I hope your Mum is continuing to make good progress. I am sure she will be so pleased to see you.

Tortie, how is poorly cat doing?

Lovely event of today? Text from KatyM. Made me smile alot.

Signing off now. Mr P is making gasping noises which I assume means he wants a cup of tea. Or he could be choking, but somehow I doubt it.

    Catch you over the weekend!

Fingets crossed a blogger gets the crown!

  • Comment number 53.

I know its probably too late, but who sets the cut off point for song suggestions anyway???

    Happy Together - Turtles.

What a great catchy upbeat song..... and just in case I have missed the boat (no pun intended!) Yer Tiz....

  • Comment number 54.

Just where did he get that 'at?

I think the Turtles are going to be my new favourite old group, sorry Herman!

    Here's another.....

  • Comment number 55.

#52 alex - poorly cat had another trip to the vets this week! She's got gingivitis (sp?), so we're now on antibiotics and anti-inflammatory liquid. Thankfully these can both be put into her food, as there's no way I could give her a tablet (not without loosing a couple of fingers!)

  • Comment number 56.

Right, off to the docs, see what he has got to say.

Looking forward to hearing the show :)

  • Comment number 57.

#55 Aw poor poorly cat - tell puss to use a better mouthwash. (*sends head stroke *)

#51 Richard Allinson regularly presents the Album show on BBC Cumbria of a Wednesday evening - very good - I listened to it the other night on t'tinternet. Then had to explain to stepson who Richard Allinson was - ignorant boy.

I'd better go - I takes two hours at this time on a Friday to get from Horsforth to home :-(

  • Comment number 58.

Yikes! How late am I to join in. Just incase Simon hasn't made a decision on the opener yet.......

    Off to read back......

  • Comment number 59.

#57 thanks Lady S - if only it was that easy!!

  • Comment number 60.

#47 - great news Florence. T'will make monday more exciting!

  • Comment number 61.

Hi just checking back in :-)

  • Comment number 62.

OK ...... Engelbert Humperdinck? Has he been chosen because we want to win, or because we want to lose? Echoes of "My Beautiful Horse"?

    And he's looking very polished:

  • Comment number 63.

Funny pics Zoe of underwater dogs. - Made me smile.

No one should feel guilty about not blogging as much - I'm the same - darn having to work for a living.

Also, have I missed something? Where is Katy? Alex said she got a text and it made her smile. I do hope she is alright.

Well, I think I'll pack away the pencils and head home for the weekend. We've had a skip delivered to get rid of lots of "stuff " from the garage so that's my weekend sorted then.

Will pop back on later hopefully and good luck for the ARF Crown!

    Byeeee *waves*

  • Comment number 64.

#63 Shona, Katy is having a break from blogging for Lent. She wants to concentrate on her "proper" life for a while and said she would see us at Easter.

  • Comment number 65.

    Afternoon All

What a beautiful day it is! Hope everyone's had a bit of Spring ............

  • Comment number 66.

#62 Harry, it looks like he's got fillers in his cheeks as well as being polished!! ;o)

  • Comment number 67.

#55 Poor mogpoppet! Been in the wars a bit, poor pet. One of mine had gingivitis and it cleared up fine. She now has special dentyne treats. I was really lucky with my old boy cat - he would take antibiotics from my hand. We called them "pink sweeties" and he would just take them. Astonishing really. Same cat got a tumour over his eye and the vet told us to put sun block on his forehead on sunny days. At the same time, I had a tumour removed from my face, so in the mornings it would be "sun block for Mummy, sun block for Scully". The good boy would just sit there until I had rubbed the cream in and then go outside to play!

#62 I think we should make every effort to lose. Can't afford to host it what with Olympics, Jubilee etc. Can't do everything.

#63 Shona, Katy is just fine. I smiled because it was good to hear from her and I realised how much I missed her. She will be back!

    Ooh - nearly ARF.......

PS It was tea Mr P wanted. He wasn't choking.

  • Comment number 68.

    Pooh. Not a blogger.

  • Comment number 69.

What an AWFUL song... I knew it wouldn't have been chosen by a blogger! :o(

  • Comment number 70.

    hmmm .........

  • Comment number 71.

Florence - It was suggested by - and played for - a blogger when the theme was BEING BAD - inspired by the activities of Frankie Coccoza. I thought it was clever and appropriate then.

I don't think it was a suitable ARFO.

I've lost the "Preview" box now!

  • Comment number 72.

    #70 Quite.

Right, off now. Have a feeling it will be one of those shows tonight. Queen and Springsteen, and I bet "Sweet Child of Mine" gets a play.

Night night all! Have good evenings.

  • Comment number 73.

I agree Billie... good for the bad theme but an awful start to the weekend!! Apologies to those who like it, but I don't and a good job we don't all like the same music! ;o)

#65 Billie, I'm glad you've had nice weather and it's been very springlike here today too and several local boats have been out on trips to the islands. I took this picture about 4.50 pm whilst dogpoppet walking around our harbour and the sun was quite low as I like reflections in the water... maybe connected to my 'watery' birth sign in July!

Have a lovely weekend everyone xx

  • Comment number 74.

    Evening all

Well, seems like the blog's been rolling along nicely today. Good effort, everybody.

Is Dr Mösh choosing the ARFO these days? And as I type, Rush begins. Is he producing the whole show.

Althooooo, I have to say, the music this year has been a bit more grown-up than the ARF's where callers all requested Wham and Kylie.

Alex - sorry about the cat poo! (Never said that to anybody before). Maybe an upgrade to dog is required. Enjoy the pub tonight - although I think I saw that TV programme (the one with the bedrooms which would make your Aunty Brenda blush?), so maybe it's worth the walk to the other one?!

That's all for me. Have a lovely weekend everyone.

Off to fire up the BBQ - yes, really.

PS No green box now.. Maybe somebody from the BAIU unplugged the blog and turned it back on again.

  • Comment number 75.

    Evening all!

Didn't really like that song choice for an ARFO but it takes all sorts.

Been dashing about everywhere today and now it's round with the hoover then it is most definitely wine o'clock here.

Just a quickie to wish you all good weekends whatever you are up to.

    Ssshhhh... No green box! :D

Ha! After I wrote that and tried to post, I got a pink box :(

  • Comment number 76.

Missed it, what was the awful ARFO? :-)

  • Comment number 77.

#76 Ken, it was George Thorogood (sp?) and the Destroyers - Bad to the Bone. I quite like it but not as an ARFO and it hardly meets the criteria as set out by Simon himself.

  • Comment number 78.

Has anyone else abandoned G**gle since they changed their privacy settings? I'm using Bing but I don't like it much. Can anyone recommend a good search engine?

  • Comment number 79.

Typing this in Word during ARFO – don’t know when I’ll get the chance to post it!

First of all there was no “Preview” box – then it said “Add your comment” but there was no “Preview” box nor “Post your comment” box”. Intermittently – green & pink boxes!

But despite all these probs for me, Jilly managed to sneak in!

#52 Alex – next time you get the chance – please tell Katy that I miss her too.

#55 Tortie – a poorly cat is very sad. I know. Bechod!

#62 Harry – Can’t explain really – just have “distaste” in my mouth and I’m pulling a disgusted face as I type …….. We used to call him Alf and Bert Dumpertruck ………
    Probably will again!

#73 Florence – You are very clever with your camera. We have had – are still having – a beautiful sunset – red sun – stripes in the sky – blue, pink, purple & violet. Nearly 6.30 and still light in the sky – Good! And the blackbird is singing!

#74 John – BBQ? March 2nd. sounds early - but speak to Alison – she has SUCH a set-up for any weather! If I remember correctly she had a BBQ over the Christmas period 2010/11 when the weather was Very Wintry!

#21 Zoe – Did you hear the caller who requested White Stripes – saying exactly what you had said about the remake? Made me smile – I wondered if he had been reading the blog!

To be honest, though, I like the Marcus Collins version!

BTW – I haven’t noticed any gloom here – just frustration!

Oh! Ken & Harry have managed to break through!

Hi Ken - are you feeling better? Hi Harry!

    Hi All

Well done to the muggle who got the ARFO.

#63 Absolutely Shona - nobody should feel guilty for not posting. We all have busy lives, and I think most of us pop in here whenever we can, or lurk if we've no time to post.

Likewise, nobody should feel that they can't post because they don't have anything clever or interesting to say... Goodness knows, a lot of what I post is mere waffle...

Spoke to Mum earlier. She's still in pain, but sounded quite a bit brighter than yesterday. She's staying in hospital for another night (which is good) and her friend is picking her up tomorrow morning. We'll meet her at her friend's house later on tomorrow. Thanks once again to all who've posted good wishes, here and elsewhere.

Have a good evening one and all

    Evening all

Poorly mogpoppet thanks you for the good wishes! She's sitting next to me as I type.
Alex - I'll "talk" on FB re. dentyne treats.

    #79 Billie - bechod indeed!

Deebee - so glad your Mum is OK. No doubt you'll be glad to see her tomorrow, just to make sure she's recovering well. Somehow, you don't really believe it, until you see them.

    Hope everyone has good weekends.

    'See' you next week.

    Tortie x

#78 Harry, what's happened to G**gle re changing their privacy settings, please?

  • Comment number 83.

Deebee, glad to hear your mum is being cared for and although in a bit of pain from the op, it's sounding like she'll be a lot better soon especially if she has you to look after her.

Thanks Harry for telling me about Katy - I didn't get a chance to read the blog for a couple of days. What an absolutely original thing to give up for lent.

I wasn't too keen on the opener tonight either and think there has been a lot of moshing music of late on the show. Mr W turned the volume down at one point in the car earlier complaining the music was awful.

Despite that, I enjoyed the show tonight and I do enjoy hearing the muggle stories when they phone in.

Hope to catch you over the weekend in between skip filling duties.

    Have a lovely time everyone.

    Shona x

Billie, yes thankyou the cough very slowly seems to be easing. Less coughing fits per day now.

Harry, ah OK, not really a wheel-tapping, head-nodding opener.

Engelbert - hmm, I feel the Beeb have missed an opportunity - to get out of the whole thing entirely! But that might take me into "bah humbug" territory :-)

  • Comment number 85.

#79 Billie, I'm not at all clever with my camera, I just point and shoot! I love taking pictures and try to remember to take my little camera in my pocket when I'm out and about, in case I see something worth snapping!

  • Comment number 86.

Deebee, I'm pleased that you feel your mum's sounding brighter today. I made her a Get Well Soon message yesterday, but you may not have seen it... I hope she continues to make good progress each day.

#82 Florence, from the 1 March, G**gle will be cross-referencing users across all of its platforms, such as the Google search engine, Youtube, Gmail, etc So, by identifying you from your IP address, and if you use Gmail it will be quite easy to put a name to that IP address, they will be able to collate what you search for on the internet, what kind of music you like, who you and your friends are. Quite soon they will know pretty much everything you do online. There are a lot of companies that will pay handsomely for this kind of information. I'm sure you don't need me to tell you that this information could be used for far more sinister things.

The EU is looking at the legality of it all:

But in the meantime they are busy gathering information.

I think it's something to be concerned about so I'm restricting my use of G**gle sites as much as possible.

Perhaps I'm just being paranoid but I prefer to think of it as just being careful.

Thanks Harry.... Sounds like Big Brother's watching us all!

Surely the data protection law prevents personal information from being passed on!

  • Comment number 89.

#87 Harry, I heard about that today too. It's pretty scary stuff and you are wise to be cautious as should we all.

Flo, you must tell me how to post pics on here and if anyone can help me with posting a pic on twitter too that would be most helpful.

Now I must get my beauty sleep for Tony's show tomorrow (crikey, I should have gone to bed at 3pm!)

In an ideal world... I would like to wish my Grandpa a happy Birthday. I'm going to do it all the same.

He would be 112 today. It only seems like yesterday....

    Happy Days.

Shona, someone else might be able to explain it better.... in the meantime, try uploading your pics to http://www.flickr.com/ then select the picture you want to post on the blog and right click it and you'll see 'properties' at the bottom.. Right click it (properties that is) and a 'box' will appear top left of your screen.

Move your cursor over the 'address URL' and highlight the title, which will be something like http:// farm8.staticflickr.com/7033/6716068939_bec4cb8cfd.jpg
Right click and copy the line ending in jpg and click 'OK'
Paste what you have copied onto Simon's blog and when you/we click on it, the picture should show.

Look forward to seeing your pics. Post the same link ending in jpg on Twitter too.

    Night night all xx

Sal, your song from Oklahoma is much better than yesterday's ARF!!! ;o)

Not long to wait for the Shony Blackburn programme!

Shona, do you take The Scotsman? If so, look at page 31 of today's paper!!!

  • Comment number 97.

Good afternoon all. Lovely sunny day here in Essex.

Gazza - if your card doesn't turn up before you are due to get your pills, explain to the chemist that you are waiting for it and they might let you have them without paying, or at least get a receipt and you can claim the cost back.
    Look after yourself.
