Simon Mayo | 09:10 UK time, Wednesday, 8 February 2012

Well your Drivetime friends are heading north to Manchester today. It's Folk Awards time folks! Mike Harding and friends tonight will be rewarding greatness and maybe unearthing a few gems. The joy for me has been discovering magnificent artists that, in my ignorance, I had ignored. Nic Jones' Penguin Eggs is now one of my favourite albums of all time but I hadn't heard of him 'till he won a special award at the F.A. a few years back. June Tabor, Martin Simpson, John Tams, Show of Hands and Bellowhead are artists I've come to love through listening to Mike and attending these evenings. I'll miss the Brewery in East London but looking forward to visiting the original 'Dirty Old Town'. In fact we've asked The Dubliners to open the show with that song, written by Ewan MacColl in 1949 about the joys of Salford.
The Dubliners and Don McLean will be getting lifetime achievement awards and would love to hear from bloggers if they have seen either act live. Any stories or reminiscences that would enlighten the show? Don sang on the show a while back and it was a joy just to have THAT VOICE in the studio. Well, we're going to do it all again today and I can't wait. Stuart Maconie will do our confession (might not get quite the reaction that Terry Wogan's buttocks got last night!) and Mark Radcliffe, Mike Harding and the wonderful Julie Fowlis will all wander past at some time or other...
And oldies please with TRADITION or ROOTS as the theme just to get in the swing of things. And we have an extra 30 minutes to play with tonight!
Wishing you all a melodious and harmony-filled Wednesday, see you after 5.

  • Comment number 13.

Simon - good to hear you've joined that exclusive club - Penguin Eggs. I had it on the original vinyl. I met Nic and family through my now late husband and we lived very near them when they were out on the Fens. But that means that we were there when Nic had that terrible accident which changed all our lives so drastically. The fact that he can get up and perform again is a source of much happiness. Is Little Pot Stove one of the most evocative and heart-warming songs ever written?

    Good Morning All :)

I have also come to appreciate, and cherish folk music in recent years through listening to Mike Hardings show. An extra 30 minutes?

    Whoop whoop!

Morning all, thanks for the comments about my experience on the Levels last evening. I have to take that route again today and hope its all cleared up, however, I am going to gear up with black bags if not and attempt to clear it if it hasn't already gone, although the RSPB were certainly very helpful and said that they would be straight onto it.

Thoughts are with Alex and Deebee and anyone else going through difficult times right now.

Off to have a thunk about tradition etc...

Can't think of any folky tunes except All around my Hat- one for KatyM! Sun shining here but too frosty to hang out the sheets.

  • Comment number 25.

Simon, you asked if any of us have seen the Dubliners or Don McLean.... I saw Don McLean in Edinburgh a couple of days before he was at Glastonbury, back in the summer. His daughter Jackie was on stage with him and she sang a couple of songs on her own as well as joining in with American Pie. I probably shouldn't have filmed him really, but I kept my camera low down so as not to disturb anyone!

I saw The Dubliners in the 70s ... definitely in London but can't recall where. Luke Kelly was still with them - an awesome voice and talent, particularly on the fast-paced slip jig ...

THE ROCKY ROAD TO DUBLIN - THE DUBLINERS

... [a tricky rhythm on the bodhrán as I found out on Monday].

Morning Simon, team, NYM, and foot-stomping bloggers,

Late today, I have a note. And I'll catch up in my lunchhour, I promise.

Sorry to hear about your sad swan story, MT, thanks for playing GT&T and sorry for ignoring your suggestion, Billie, and happy to swap any day, Surfergirl.

    Let's get down to business.

I'm going for more of a folky focus on today's theme, starting with a recycled tune from yesterday:

HARD TIMES OF OLD ENGLAND - Steeleye Span

    or

    THE BLACKSMITH - Steeleye Span

or most things by Steeleye Span would fit tonight's show!

    NORTH COUNTRY BOY - Lindisfarne

or for somebody with no roots..

    NOWHERE MAN - Beatles

    Good day all

'Once In A Lifetime' - Talking Heads ("Same as it ever was....")

  • Comment number 49.

    Come on chaps!

  • Comment number 50.

#34 Can't follow links from where I am at the moment, Florence.
I expect it is the very same traditional song that Christy is singing - a popular choice and like many performers, he also beats along on the bodhrán. Actually, the song itself is so well known it qualifies for its own Wikipage:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rocky_Road_to_Dublin

    :^)

  • Comment number 51.

Talking of chaps.... I wonder how Gazza is doing... I hope he's OK!

  • Comment number 52.

Hello MTF, Hope you had a good trip, and didn't get stuck in the snow. So, did you succumb to the basket?! We're regulars, trundling backwards and forwards. My MIL is on first name terms with the hostesses, Donna and Linda!

Katy - nice bit of drum banging! Was feeling a bit isolated. Might have to join in the discussions about John Barrowman.

  • Comment number 53.

    Good Morning Each!

'We Built This Village On A Trad. Arr. Tune' by Half Man Half Biscuit. (Will probably need the assistance of a couple of judiciously placed bleeps, but hey, it'd be worth it)

    That'll do!
After all, if Andy Kershaw thinks that HMHB are "Englands greatest folk band", that must be correct. Mustn't it?

  • Comment number 54.

Hello ladies ..... (and any gents that are already on board today!)

Been busy the last few days so not been on much, but have been lurking. Thanks for thinking of us chaps :)

Well done Dougle and Alex, heard your menshees on the show yesterday.

A few choons from me ...

THOSE WERE THE DAYS - MARY HOPKIN

SON OF YOUR FATHER - ELTON JOHN

TAKE ME BACK TO CHICAGO - CHICAGO

Will try a poop back later, promise!

    GoD

  • Comment number 55.

    Good morning everyone.

Apologies for tardiness. Nice to be missed Katy :0)

Nothing much to add to the great choices above (Show of Hands' "Roots" must be a shoo-in?) but something from Dougie MacLean would be welcome (CALEDONIA perhaps?). Has he ever been played on DT?

I think tonight's show is my favourite one of the whole year so the drive home has to be timed to perfection to arrive just as the 6 o'clock news starts with a few minutes to get indoors

Be back later if I can think of some way to contribute.

  • Comment number 56.

    (That was me!)

  • Comment number 57.

A most excellent trip thanks John. We had a male host/ess? on the way out and a Lady called Chris with a driver also called Chris on the way back.

I didn't succumb to the basket as went with supplies of my own, which stayed securely hidden in my bag for the entire journey after discovering their rules a little too late.

The trip out of London and back down the M5 was a hairy one, the driver was literally ploughing through the snow and there were a few concerned passengers on board, yes even the jovial Arsenal fans did query the speed and conditions with the hostess, but she assured them that we were safe.

I would definitely travel that way again though and am hoping for better conditions for my next trip.

I'll look out for Donna and Linda :)

    Morning All,

Well for traditional you don't get mush more traditional than an Irish Céilí Band so how about.

Joyce Country Céilí Band by the Saw Doctors

As for roots, this is a band who have stuck to there's and never moved from there home town of Tuam in county Galway so

Back To Tuam by the Saw Doctors would also seem appropriate.

  • Comment number 83.

    #79 Johno - I'll second your choice!

Funnily enough - the first line of my earlier request of Rocky Road To Dublin mentions Tuam as well ...

#81 Great clip, KatyMatey! I have just watched it 3 times. And I did as you suggested and turned the volume up loud - but with my headphones on. My ears are now buzzing...

Interestingly I've just seen on Twitter that someone's RTd my tweet to Simon this morning suggesting that very song...

We're planning on going to the Cambridge Folk Festival this year. The acts haven't been announced yet - I'm wondering if tonight's awards will serve as an indication of who will be appearing.

No news from my Mum yet - think it was about this time yesterday that she phoned to say the op had been postponed.

#63 Florence - Sorry if I have confused but I had just been musing about Traditions in general and my butterfly mind landed on the St Swithins day tradition and simply related that to a tune. I think that actual day is 15th July!!!

Back again, tyres pumped, and I can report that it is still chilly out.

And for the record, I don't think there's anything quite so satisfying (during working hours) as coming in from the cold and washing your hands under some nice warm running water.

Well, my soup is supped so it's back to work. French onion, so I'm expecting some of that there borborygmus in these 'those' parts also!

    Drekly ...

#91 As a psychology graduate I find myself wondering whether the delightful Mr Allinson makes any difference to your weekly online grocery order. Have you tried doing it without his dulcet tones in the background? Do you spend more/less money when you're listening to him? Does he encourage you to make purchases you wouldn't otherwise do? Or is he so much of a distraction you forget to include those essential items...?

I can report that one end of the barn is now minus the plastic corrugated sheeting and is now weather boarded. It looks fabulous!!! My mate Ziggy has now started on the other end. Every time I take him a coffee, he has shed another layer. Be down to just his pants soon.

Waiting for my friend to come round. We are going out to buy her wee border terrier a new bed. Don't tell me I'mnot living on the edge!!

#91 I'm with you on the copy and paste thing Jennie. Many is the time I've type type typed and hit the Post Comment button and blurgh ... ! the internet stops and nothing happens. I'm now a firm believer in type it, copy it, post it, wait and hope for it, paste it if it breaks!

#46 Katy - Nice to be missed! :o)

Very busy day today so no real time to blog or make suggestions. Haven't even had time to tweet. Judging by the experience of the last week or so this will have zero impact on the likelihood of a mensh!

Hope to be back to normal tomorrow. Whatever normal is...

    Tradition / Roots oldies:

"That's the way it always starts" - Gerry Rafferty (on Local Hero soundtrack album)
"Same Old Scene" - Roxy Music
"Going Back To My Roots" - Odyssey
"(where you from) You sexy thing" - Hot Chocolate
"Don't Look Back In Anger" - Oasis
    Cheers
