Oooh-la indeed

Simon Mayo | 09:01 UK time, Friday, 18 November 2011

Well this will be a whirlwind. Not just Children in Need/Bloggers on Tour day. Today is a day for the fast moving. This morning I'm at a launch for the new War of the Worlds tour. Yes it's back and this time with the lovely Liam Neeson playing the Richard Burton role. I'm chatting to Jeff Wayne and Liam Neeson at a swanky do in London this morning and it all looks rather wonderful. Its a live webcast and more like Live aid than a press conference. But then the music starts. You know every note and every ooh-lah. I'll tell Liam you say hi.
Then to 5L for a little movie chat followed by my bit of the CiN Jukebox with a special Dr Mosh sequence as he takes house calls and ROCKS generally.
And instead of then just taking it easy, I'm due in stage at the BBC Radio Theatre for Radio 4's Infinite Monkey Cage with Prof Brian Cox and Robin Ince which will be fun and terrifying in equal measure.
Then it's wine time.
And well done to Ahab and Bellowhead for a great show last night and to the Bellowhead boys particularly for their silver disc(s). Well deserved and a spectacular tour.
Have a an energising, fund raising, sparkly Friday. See you after 5.

Good morning Simon, Team and all blogpoppets!

    Remember me?

Thinking of the fellow bloggers at CiN today - wish I was there. It was such a blast last year. Loved every minute but it was exhausting and I had no voice left at the end of the day and my ears hurt!

Hope all are well and dandy. I have been trying to keep up with the blog - lots of new faces/names which is great.

Will be making my phone call later ..... maybe one for Dr Mosh!

  • Comment number 2.

Sounds like a busy day Simon.

Morning to Alex Girl - nice to see you back. It'll no doubt be a quiet day with so may bloggers doing their bit for CiN. I can't listen to much of it - due to teaching getting in the way *sigh* but I'll be tuning in when I can.

  • Comment number 3.

    Morning All. Morning Alex-Girl.

Will be making my call to 0500 22 11 22 today but what to ask for? Shall have a think.

    Maybes back laters

  • Comment number 4.

Hi Alex xx Great to see you. I too am targeting the Moshster!

Thanks JillyM [from previous blog]. It's a pleasure to get a few moments on here. Re CiN: I somehow think Mr Wright would rather duck out of all the hype and leave it to Wogan/Evans et al.

Speaking of which - my admiration and respect to all our friends who are currently being taken through their paces at Broadcasting House. Hope you all have a ball.

  • Comment number 5.

    Good morning everyone.

Katy, I hope your mum is fine and dandy and enjoying spending time with you and you with her. I expect the bloggers will enjoy their day manning the CiN phones and I agree Katy, that I think Steve Wright would prefer not to be around whereas Patrick Kielty will enjoy himself.

  • Comment number 6.

I think it's quiet in here because it's Friday [always quiet] plus NO ARFO requests required ..

As for CiN Mayobloggers - we are only missing Deebs, Mo, Tortie, MTF, Chickster and PSL - none of whom are particularly 'noisy'. LOL.

Has everyone submitted their 5 lists of 5 names for The Blog's Favourite ACT?
Even if you haven't started, there's plenty of time to make amends - Paul of Sheffield will take submissions up to 7pm tonight ...

  • Comment number 7.

#5 Thanks Florence - that's really kind of you to say xx
We have a very important follow-up appointment with her consultant in Southampton shortly, which is why I can't stay and play on here.

Hope to be back later for the Mosh tho'!

  • Comment number 8.

    Good Morning again All

    It IS Quiet!

  • Comment number 9.

I hope all goes well for your mum, Katy and like you, I won't be around much until later but will pop in and out when I can and maybe some of the CiN phone answerers will post an occasional message!

Presumably I'll get to keep my ARFO crown for an extra week... if so, I promise to look after it and keep it well polished! :o))

  • Comment number 10.

A quick hello and bye bye until later, to Ms Billie xx

  • Comment number 11.

    Hi Billie The Beat!

What? No Feem Choons? No ARFO?
I guess our chatterboxes will just have to .. er ...chat

Have you done your TBFA lists?

I really am signing out now

  • Comment number 12.

Morning all and a special Pudsey wave to all bloggers especially those manning the phones at CiN central.

Feeling lonely in the office today but I have to say that the Pudsey area of Leeds is looking very pleasant this morning from my window.

  • Comment number 13.

    Good morning all.

My three word Friday... Ulcers on tonsils :[ Not feeling great at all but hoping the antbiotics will kick in soon. It was great to have my song chosen last night that's making me feel a bit better! Simon's day seems pretty full again. Mine will consist of anitbiotics, ice cream, paracetemol, bed!! Hope you all have a good day and a great weekend.

  • Comment number 14.

Well I've done the first four lists so will do my final choices of those artists I listen to time and time again or whom I've seen live in recent years and have just loved.

    1. David Bowie
    2. The Rolling Stones
    3. The Beatles
    4. Bon Jovi
    5. Brad Paisley

In spite of having 5 lists there's so many I've missed out .....

...... Just heard Dr Mosh on with Ken - I guess Matt is in all day :)

  • Comment number 15.

#13 kasbahrocks - you sound ill, poor thing. Some nice, cooling ice-cream to soothe you sounds like a marvellous idea.

  • Comment number 16.

Hello Autumn_Gale and JPA!! lovely to "see" you Katy - been thinking of you and your Mum and hoping she is making good progress. Good luck with the appointment later.

I have completely missed out on the lists thingy and won't have time today to join in. Just hope Alan Parsons Project appears somewhere in the final chart!

Must do some work.... but will try to pop by later to bolster the chat. I thought it would be quiet here today hence making a valiant effort to join in.

  • Comment number 17.

Good morning Simon, team, blogpoppets here and CiNing and of course Pudsey!

Thanks for that Katy, understand what you meant about SW now :-) Hope all goes well with Mum today.

Kasbahrocks, that sounds painful. Hope you feel better soon.

Dr Mosh on with Ken Bruce!! Pudsey has a lot to answer for, lol.

Don't forget that when you ring in to pledge, if you mention that you are a blogpoppet someone from the Evans blog will donate a little extra and we all know that every little helps! ;-)

Hope you're not listening now Billie... they're playing BOTW again! lol

    Have a good Friday all.

  • Comment number 18.

    Hello Everybody

Hope all the folk manning the phones at CiN have a good day, and well done for your efforts.
Will make a call later and perhaps be speaking to a blogger

  • Comment number 19.

Morning everyone. Hope everyone is OK - sounds like the guys at CiN are doing a great job.

My final 5 list is my contemporary list - well as contemporary as I'm ever going to be!!

    1. Coldplay
    2. Snow Patrol
    3. James Morrison
    4. Seth Lakeman
    5. Oasis

Looking forward to seeing the final 'chart rundown'!!

  • Comment number 20.

Ooh I'm listening to Ken and Lyne is interviewing a lady from Taunton. Would that be a very own MTF?

  • Comment number 21.

I love The Saw Doctors and wonder if there any other Saw Doctors' fans in here!

If so, have you heard their latest song with 79-year old Petula Clark?

  • Comment number 25.

Good luck to everyone in the studio. Could MTF pay a flying visit to Mr Aquaplane? He has terrible toothache.

Here in Horsforth our cake'n'curry sale has gone past the £500 mark. For such a small building that's remarkable.

Also well done to everyone who was dressed up and collecting in Leeds Station this morning.

  • Comment number 26.

Why is Cliff Richard featuring so much today in CiN? Earlier this morning Chris Evans played quite a few Cliff Richard songs and a few minutes ago Jeremy Vine played a medley of his songs and keeps saying it's Cliff minus 17, Cliff minus 13 etc etc so I guess he's going to be making an appearance on his programme... and he's been on TV a lot pushing his DVD so maybe it's more of the same today on Radio 2!

Maybe he'll pop in to see the bloggers a bit later on!

  • Comment number 27.

    Afternoon Simon and Poppeteers

Well, I phoned in and guess who I spoke to? Our very own MTF!!!!!

As we are both quiet, shy and retiring people, we didn't have a lot to say to one another. Tee hee. Just kidding! It was great to put a voice to a blogger! I may just have to phone Simon later and ask for her very own ELO Twilght!

    My final five today:

    1. Mumford and Sons
    2. Caro Emerald
    3. Baseballs
    4. Elvis Presley
    5. Paulo Natini

Hope everyone is having a good Friday. Will be back later this afternoon.

    Shona x

  • Comment number 28.

#27 I've got ELO Twilight mixed up with MTF and PSL haven't I???

    *brain in melt down*

Anyway, I may phone Simon and ask for a choon to be played for all bloggers manning phones later.

  • Comment number 29.

#27, I heard a request for Shona, I did wonder if it was from you. Well done and how fab getting to talk to MTF.

    Pen x

  • Comment number 30.

    Good afternoon,

Many thanks for the mensh congrats last night and sorry Billie! As I have said before - the first thing I think about when the main man announces the oldies theme is songs that have particular meaning to me. I'm afraid that is one of them.

Lunchtime and we have only just reached the quarter century? Proof (not that it's needed) that we miss all you lovely CiN bloggers. Keep up the good work.

#1 Alex Girl. How lovely to see you. Sending my love and best wishes your way.xxx

#7 Katy, also sending more best wishes to your mum.xxx

#4 Katy/#5 Florence, SW definitely wasn't in for CiN last year. I remember Richard Allinson gently telling Mr Mayo off for being in the phone room hugging bloggers when he was supposed to be standing by for 5.05 in his studio. I also recall seeing pictorial proof in another place.

    #13 Kasbah, get well soon.xxx

Billie from yesterday, Thanks for your concern about the hand, foot and mouth. Little Girl very poorly. Big girl fine so far and has gone to school wearing spots for CiN - just hoping she doesn't come back with some extra ones on her hands and feet.

    Have a good day.x

  • Comment number 31.

#23 Florence I love the Saw Doctors. Have seen them live four times I think and they are a superb live band.

  • Comment number 32.

Ooh Shona how exciting! Maybe we should have a CiN Crown for the first blogger to get a choon played...

Going to have a bash at my 5 now:

    1. Abba
    2. The Beatles
    3. The Bee Gees
    4. Queen
    5. Southgate & Leigh

    1. Wham
    2. Spandau Ballet
    3. Duran Duran
    4. Madness
    5. Erasure

    1. Robert Palmer
    2. Kenny Thomas
    3. Bon Jovi
    4. Simon & Garfunkel
    5. The Buzzcocks

    1. Dusty Springfield
    2. Billie Holiday
    3. Nat King Cole
    4. Barbra Streisand
    5. Frank Sinatra

    1. Southgate & Leigh
    2. John Etheridge
    3. Abba
    4. Robert Palmer
    5. The Rolling Stones

  • Comment number 33.

Hello all and good luck to all those involved in CiN including those manning the phones at HQ and all those that have and are to make pledges.

Final day selection of favourite Acts:-

    1. Bob Dylan
    2. Pentangle
    3. James Taylor
    4. Simon & Garfunkel
    5. Spinners

    A folky feeling today.

    Enjoy the day

  • Comment number 34.

    Hi folks,

Here are the final three lists that make up my BFA:

    List 3 (growing up):

    1. Electric Light Orchestra
    2. The Stranglers
    3. 10CC
    4. Earth, Wind & Fire
    5. The Jam

    List 4 (approaching maturity):

    1. George Benson
    2. Pat Metheny
    3. Level 42
    4. Morrisey-Mullen
    5. Chick Corea

List 5 (up to recent times):

    1. Chris Liberator
    2. Blur
    3. Happy Mondays
    4. The Smiths
    5. Robbie Williams

Most of the late 70s and the entire 80s were spent listening and dancing to music released on the Prelude, West End, Philly and Salsoul dance labels so it's almost impossible to select individual acts from that era. If I had to cite any, they would be producers Francois Kevorkian, Larry Levan, Shep Pettibone, John Luongo and Tom Moulton. They were, frankly, the best years of my life (so far).

    - Paul TMFM (The Man From Milton).

  • Comment number 35.

BIG hello's back to Harry and Julia 40! **waves madly**

Made my pledge and spoke to the lovely Super Bagpuss from the CLP blog. I have met her before so it was lovely to speak to someone I knew but I was secretly hoping to reach a Drivetime Blogpoppet!

Shona, no you are not mixed up. Twilight is definitely the choice of MTF! I am afraid you won't be able to ring in to ARF as usual - 'tis the Jukebox all day.

Gosh, it is nice to be back. Still won't be a regular until mid-December but then I am taking January off, so try keeping me away! Loads to tell you all about our rural idyll.

  • Comment number 36.

    Good afternoon all -

#149 on yesterdays blog - Ken Jude - I thought the same as you - ie that SW was missing last year.Glad I'm not going mad! Why wouldn't he want to join in the fun?
And also, why doesn't Tim Smith do his show when he has one of his holidays? He sits in for Alex Lester when he's away, so why not for SW? Anything would be better than the present stand-in IMHO.

Hope all the bloggers are enjoying themselves and taking lots of pledges for money.

  • Comment number 37.

#35 Alex, Looking forward to your company on a regular basis in January. **waves back***xxx

#6 Katy, I believe Andy Toverson is also at the mothership today.

#34 Afternoon Crew, Mr 40 (38 actually) could have written your list no.4 and I am now feeling very guilty for not including George Benson. Saw him life in the round at Wembley in the early 90s. Oh drat! Also saw Phil Collins - how could I have forgotten him too. I hang my head in shame.

  • Comment number 38.

Been trying to call - but engaged, the bloggers must be busy indeed :)

#36 as we note often, it's interesting how mileage varies, I really like Paddy K

#32 & 34 Some really interesting choices - some I've never heard of I have to admit. I've really enjoyed the theme this week - it's been fascinating to see what people listen to - alongside Drivetime of course!

  • Comment number 39.

Hello again! #26 Florence, I heard the Chris Evans say that a commercial radio station that only plays 60's music has banned Sir Cliff as 'not 60's enough'. The rock greats such as Sir Roger Daltry have come out and said how bonkers that is! Although this may be a publicity stunt I cannot think of a more representative person than Sir Paul McCartney.

    Am I too late?

    1. The Beatles
    2. The Beach Boys
    3. Genesis
    4. Level 42
    5. Fleetwood Mac

  • Comment number 40.

Hi from the phone room! :-D

    PSL x

  • Comment number 41.

PSL! How's it going? Huggles to all ....

  • Comment number 42.

#32 #31 I think I may have seen the Saw Doctors once at the Fleadh festival in Finsbury Park. On with Van Morrison and The Pgues if I remember correctly.

  • Comment number 43.

#31 Alan... so glad to 'meet' a fellow Saw Doctors fan! I've tried several times to phone a pledge to ask for it but the lines are always engaged and I'm now going to take my dogs for long walk as we're going to see The Zombies tonight so the dogs will be looking after the house... home alone, so a good walk is beckoning!

In the past I've tried to get Simon to play The Saw Doctors' Joyce Country Ceili Band song as an ARF as it's nice s lively but he obviously prefers the likes of Queen, The Who, Status Quo etc! Doesn't Petula Clark look amazing for a 79-year old in their video! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ItVEhL-T7qQ&sns=fb

  • Comment number 44.

Hi PSL! Hope you are all having a good time!

  • Comment number 45.

    Afternoon all!

#36/38 I like PK too but then I'm a sucker for the Irish accent.

Been trying to call in but all lines are busy - determined to speak to one of our number at some point today :-)

Nice to see you pooping in PSL, hope you're all having fun, well done and hugs all round.

Florence - I'm feel like I'g getting a little Cliff overload - not such a good thing (IMO)

In the process of compiling my final list.. it's sooooo hard! It doesn't help that everytime I read someone else's list I think ohhh I love them too! Back later after much rumination.

Hope it's nice days all round.
    Jilly x

  • Comment number 46.

Afternoon - thanks JillyM and John B Good for your kind comments about what I wrote on yesterday's blog, this morning.

Just phoned in to pledge and spoke to the delightful SuperBagpuss from the Chris Evans blog - the blogger who is donating money every time a fellow blogger phones in! It sounds mad there. I asked her to shout hello the DT bloggers from Hoffs but in case she didn't get the chance (more than likely!!) 'hello' to those of you who are catching up with the blog after today, hope you had a good time.

PoS - hope my lists are OK, despite the odd typo.

Have a good evening - looking forward to hearing the show later x

  • Comment number 47.

    Hi PSL,

Hope you are all enjoying youselves. Keep up the good work. haven't tried to ring yet. Feeling rather shy! Stupid I know.

  • Comment number 52.

Was that just Viking Mo we heard? How exciting this is!

  • Comment number 53.

Aaarghh - in office so can't listen! What's happening?

  • Comment number 54.

#53 Alex, not sure - didn't hear. Was on the phone to the lovely Tiggs. She said Sally Traffic had just come in.

#38 AG, you probably won't have heard of Southgate & Leigh but they have been played on Radio 2. Unfortunately it was in the middle of the night. I gather Joan Armatrading is a fan. If you get the chance check them out. It's all original stuff and me and my family love it. Have to confess they are actually friends of ours but I would choose to listen to their album "Where We Were" even if they weren't.

Harry, where are you? mad rush in the shop today? This blog needs some naughtiness and you are just the man to provide it ;-)

  • Comment number 55.

How lovely to hear Mo :-)

I managed to get through and spoke with The Talented Mr Ripley from the Evans blog.. think I'm just going to have to pledge again later and see if I can't get through to someone from this side of the fence - although he did shout at Deebee and tell her I was on the phone, lol.

Think I want to be there with them next year!

  • Comment number 56.

#54 Sally Traffic is just lovely. Last year, she and I shared a couple of smoke breaks! Do wish I was there again (although glad I missed Cliff Richard - can't bear him. Is that a treasonable offence?)

    Yes, where is Harry?

  • Comment number 57.

    #54 Julia, you called?

Naughtiness, eh? How about Alexis Petridis' review of the new Kate Bush album where he discusses her singing about misbehaving with a snowman?

  • Comment number 58.

I'm with you on the Cliff issue AG .. I do think the lovely Sally was flirting with him earlier!!!

  • Comment number 59.

#56 Alex G, apologies for my absence but I have loads of work to do.

Did I miss Mo on the wireless? Of course, not wishing to boast, but I have met her in the flesh you know :-D

    Be back later.

  • Comment number 60.

Me and my typing - I have just had a text from my lovely husband asking whether I had really phoned in to Radio 2 and sent a 'massage' to him for the journey home. I texted him earlier to remind him to listen and obviously pressed the wrong button. Now, where are my glasses?!

  • Comment number 61.

#56 - not at all Alex Girl - what's the saying 'if we all liked the same music / person, life would be boring'!! I happen to be with you on this one.

  • Comment number 62.

#59 You are forgiven! Having not been here for ages, I shouldn't be nagging!

    I have met Mo too!!

  • Comment number 63.

hello all my last list is

    5.billy ocean

so some of the bloggers are taking calls at the cin thing where was my invite lol

  • Comment number 64.

Afternoon all! Hope those of you listening to CiN are enjoying. Hectic day today, and unable to listen, though hope to catch a bit of the show on the way home, and hope to try and get something for the mosh section...

As for our lists - I did one on Monday and am lagging behind - another four to compile quickly over the weekend, methinks.

    have a good weekend all.

  • Comment number 65.

    Hi All,

Managed to get through straight away and speak with our very own Mobile Tooth Fairy! Woo Hoo.

Asked for a song to be played but not sure that it will. Fingers crossed.

Keep up the good work All!

  • Comment number 66.

#64 Driver, the deadline for TBFA lists is 7pm tonight so compiling over the weekend will be a little too late .............. see Katy's post @ #6

  • Comment number 67.

#56 Alex Girl and #58 Jilly, (and The Hoofs?) I'm with you in that I also can't bear Cliff Richard and it's being made worse by him popping up on every radio and TV station promoting his DVD and calendar! I used to like Cliff when I saw him many moons ago but when I went to see him in the late 80s/early 90s I found him rather slimy and his 'dancing' was worse than my dad's dancing!!! Give me Shakin' Stevens any day!!! :o))

This is impossible to choose! How on earth do they choose for Desert Island Discs?

  • Comment number 70.

    Afternoon all

Haven't had time to do 5 different lists, so have just done one of my "all-time favourites." Very tricky to whittle it down to 5 - I asked myself the simple question which music I listen to most.

    1. Beatles
    2. Coldplay
    3. Lloyd Cole and the Commotions
    4. David Bowie
    5. Roxy Music

Might poop back later if I have time

And luvvvverly to see Alex back on this 'ere blog.

Just phoned in again and put in a request for Blondie, Hanging on the Telephone for all the bloggers manning the phones today.

Spoke to someone called Sean who says he blogs here and on Chris' blog. Keep your ears open to hear if it gets played.

Just heard from Deebee! She has just met a certain DJ who you may have heard of AND HE SIGNED HER BOOK!

#80, I also spoke to a Sean and asked if he was a blogger and he said no! ;)

    Good luck with your pledge.

#82 Huh! They'll say anything for money. Tee hee. I've spent a small fortune today

  • Comment number 85.

#84 HH I've never been able to find it.

Seems you have to get on to speak to Simon before he'll play a song so don't hold out much hope of getting a choon played for bloggers manning phones. Ah well, I tried.

#49-51 Was Mo on the radio or did she get a menshe? I was working and didn't hear

  • Comment number 87.

Yes, 2 million pounds!!!! Well done blogger-phone-operators!!!!!

  • Comment number 88.

    #87 Whoop whoop whoop!!!

  • Comment number 89.

Isn't Mo supposed to give her tee-shirt to Simon now?!

Is this Julia40 on the phone now? Well done if it is!

  • Comment number 90.

Shona, Mo was interviewed in the phone room for being the blogger who had traveled the farest to man the phones.

  • Comment number 91.

#90 Oh Crikey, that was great! I'm sorry I missed that. Pesky work getting in the way of things.

  • Comment number 92.

Yeah! I Love To Boogie!! I often ask for that for an ARFO

  • Comment number 93.

Shona, I was out and missed Mo too, but we can listen again if we know roughly the time, which I presume was when the first message was posted on here about it!

#89 Hoffs, in a word - yes! Rang and spoke to our neighbour Tiggs early this afternoon. At the end of the call she asked if I would like a particular song so I requested the song my Big Girl rings in about once a month to request - Mamma Mia.

#85 Shona, Hope you heard me mensh the phone operators just now. If we can't get them a choon at least they got a shout out. Anyway - the night is young... You may still get that call make...

  • Comment number 95.

    Ooops - "mate" not "make".

How rude of me - thank you so much to Tiggs for passing on my suggestion and to Simon for playing it. The girls are still tap dancing.

  • Comment number 96.

#94 Woo hoo Julia!! It was you! Well done. Don't think I'll get the call as Dr Mosh is taking up a bit of the show. And not too much to say apart from well done Radio 2. I'm really enjoying the show though.

    #96 Thanks Shona.

Just got a text from a friend saying "was that you?" We only see each other about twice a year and it is a standing joke that if she wants to know how I am she listens to Drivetime. I have suggested we hook up on FB but it isn't her thing.

Also meant to say sorry to Mo - didn't hear her on the radio earlier because I was talking to Tiggs at the time but I will listen again at a more convenient time. Did I hear a certain Fairy this morning?

Listener Dirk? Is that Mr Thrust do you think?

  • Comment number 98.

Come on gang - the century is there for the taking. I have had my bit of fun so over to one of you to bag the "tonner" as my cycling husband would say.

Sounds like the girls have now got the saucepans out and are using them as drums. Best I go and investigate.

  • Comment number 99.

It IS a fantastic total - and that's only so far .............

It's a bit difficult to keep up with all bloggers' successes!

I gather - Mo was on the radio this afternoon - Deebee has had her book signed - Julia and her girls were just on to Simon - have I missed anything else? - it's all a bit surreal!

BTW - how nice to see AlexG here today. I thought #1 meant she wouldn't be around.
