chasing one's tail

Simon Mayo | 10:05 UK time, Friday, 30 September 2011

Hither and thither. Helter and skelter. Pell, and indeed, mell.
Apollogies. Is a late blog permissible on a Friday? I'm thinking it's the on-line equivalent of dress-down Friday. Slack maybe but forgivable hopefully. Things are unwinding, the weekend is not spoiled just yet and that take away/BBQ/beer you have planned tonight is still an exciting prospect. Maybe you can even get away with the last appearance of your shorts? And the weekend may see the first appearance of your legs in any October since schooldays. I realise this is a bloke's way of thinking but these are momentous wardrobe decisions... My favourite communication yesterday was a tweet which I read out before re-tweeting; 'Greece! You can have your weather back when you pay your bills! Love, the UK'. It was the most re-tweeted thing I've seen and then heard Nicky Campbell read it out from a listener this morning. Bet some wag says it at your BBQ tonight.
Movies first with Dr Kermode and an appearance from Supersize Me film maker Morgan Spurlock. His latest film is a documentary called'The Greatest Movie Ever Sold' and it is about product placement. In fact, he tries to fund the film using product placement which is a jolly good wheeze really. So that's 2-4 sorted, then to the underground delights of the Central line and to Radio 2(remembering of course to pick up the loser snacks on the way).
So we need that impressive opening tune please. The ARFO to beat all ARFOs. It's hot, it's Friday it's 5.05, it's......(fill space) Have a well-presented, emotionally stable Friday, see you at 2&5 on 5&2.

Morning Simon , team and fellow bloggers
Must say there have been some good shows this week, with interesting themes. I particularly enjoyed the “Songs of Praise” theme , I was not surprised that my selection of the live version of “Amazing Grace” by Aretha Franklin was not played as it not exactly radio friendly at over 11 minutes long ! Saying that I would recommend the Amazing Grace album to anyone as one of not only the best gospel of all to time, but just as a great album, and that recommendation comes from someone who is not in the least religious !
As it’s now Friday so time for ARFO selection, mine is as usual:-

    Have a great weekend all.

  • Comment number 2.

    Good morning everyone (again)

Catching up on yesterday’s blog, I have to admit I admire MTF’s persistence and find in her the inspiration to continue to ‘flog’ my own ‘dead horse’ of an ARFO:

However, I now feel I should offer an alternative; so, how about:

  • Comment number 3.

Morning to all on this beautiful end of September day. I'm really looking forward to the weekend but I need to get through the day and school play tonight (Lord of the Flies). In the meantime for ARFO, it may be the perfect day for:

Walking on Sunshine - Katrina & the Waves

  • Comment number 4.

Hi Andy - coming from the same part of the world as myself and having ridden in from Cleckhuddersfax to Horsforth in an easterly direction in the morning all week (as well as riding home Westerly) this song has been stuck in my ears all week. What with the low sun & clear skies, please play this ARFO to clear the 'earwax tune' out.

Off to Windermere tonight for a three B's weekend - Beer, BBQ and Boating

  • Comment number 5.

Morning Simon, DT team and all the mad crazy blogpoppets,

What a fabulous show yesterday, and what a great theme. There were so many good suggestions that I hope it is a theme that will be repeated at some point in the future.

My ARFO suggestions, inspired by the pleasant warmth that bathes this fair isle:

FANTASTIC DAY by those cheeky HAIRCUT 100 chappies!

Will try and pop in again later, in the meantime have a fantastic day!........

    Cuba by the Gibson Brothers.

There is a reason why I'm asking for this. I'm off to liverpool tonight for my cousin and his wife's 10th wedding anniversary. They are off to Cuba in a couple of weeks which he has just been given the all clear to go as he's not long finished his chemo for thyroid cancer. So they are both really looking forward to the break :)

  • Comment number 7.

Hi Simon and everyone else in dress down mood!

Its Friday its 5.05 and its ........

IN A BIG COUNTRY - Big Country ( which wet my whistle after hearing my part 2 of the double mention on Wednesday ...Look Away!

    Failing that....GENO by Dexys again!!!

    Have a lovely weekend.

Oh well back to the job hunting!

    Mandy ;)

  • Comment number 8.

Good Morning Simon, Team and Blogpoppets

For today's ARFO I would like to suggest:

    HOUSE OF FUN by Madness

NUTBUSH CITY LIMITS by Tina Turner

LESSONS IN LOVE by Level 42

    Deebee ~X~

  • Comment number 9.

    Good Morning again -

Simon - Thankyou for playing OH HAPPY DAY and for my mensh. It was an uplifting experience to hear it again.

Please - for ARFO - may I request, as usual,

THE BEAT - by The Look

It really is a belter to get the weekend going!

  • Comment number 10.

    Morning again!

As I suggested earlier U2 "Beautiful Day" OR "Heatwave" by Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, self explanatory really.

My weekend consists of a trip to Alton Towers tomorrow by coach, populated by a load of kids with autism. is that going to be hot and noisy or what?

  • Comment number 11.

Quick dash back in from the garden....

    *** Twilight ***

By ELO Please NYM, Simon or anyone else involved in choosing the opening song for this ALL REQUEST FRIDAY.

Peta if this is your last day, thanks for everything that you have done for this jolly blog.

Hope pastures new are happy ones and yes, will be nice to see you poop in now and again.

Back to my deckch.... er weeding!

    We pass each other !!

I do the very pleasurable drive over Ilkley and Bingley moors towards Halifax. On days like this it a very wonderful experience, this morning aidded by Springsteen and Van Morrision

  • Comment number 13.

Morning one and all............it's good to be back! Been a strange old week.........what with dentist stuff and work stuff............ho hum :0(

Lots of catching up to do:

My ARFO today has to be a summery tune. Afterall, this may be the last Friday this year that we get to wear our Summer togs and sit outside with liquid refreshments!!

    Dougal x

  • Comment number 14.

    Good Morning All :)

Fun fun fun in the sun sun sun!!!

#10 I was going to suggest (LOVE IS LIKE A) HEATWAVE - MARTHA REEVES AND THE VANDELLAS, but you beat me to the punch! :D Sounds like you will have your hands full at Alton Towers tomorrow, I hope you all enjoy it though. We thought about taking the twins there over the Summer, but they don't do well in big crowds, so maybe a trip at a less busy time might be an option :-/

I think my ARFO choice today has to be...

It's been the ARFO once before, I believe, but like Simon said - it's hot, and it doesn't get much hotter than hell!

  • Comment number 15.

    Good morning again!

Cannot believe it is really going to be BBQ weather on the 1st of October!!!! We're having a nothing much planned, chilled and relaxing weekend... with the exception of an extremely tense 90 minutes on Sunday when the Mister and my teams go head to head trying to best each other for the pride of North London... it'll probably end in tears, tantrums and hurtled sausages and that is just on the pitch!

My ARFO is a fave of 'im indoors .. so this is my 'being nice' phase before the war begins in earnest!

More than a Feeling - Boston

    Back later x

  • Comment number 16.

Morning Simon, all the Team and Drivetimers everywhere!

Must admit I didn't get to hear much of the show yesterday, but having read the blog I can tell it was a stormer as usual. Thanks Team.

Today is lovely and warm once again. My suggestion for an ARFO would be this rather uplifting tune:

    Have fun everyone :o)

    - Paul.

  • Comment number 17.

    Morning all

    Thank you.

    Pen x

  • Comment number 18.

    Good morning all

Great weather for the end of September.

Would like to suggest for the opener on ARF:-

ROCK THE CASBAH - THE CLASH to reflect the Mediterranean feel of the weather
or just for the celebration of summer, probably for the last Friday this year,

Enjoy the day (and the weekend)

  • Comment number 19.

I thought a couple of sunny tunes wouldn't be out of place today!

HERE COMES THE SUN ~ The Beatles

GOOD DAY SUNSHINE ~ The Beatles

  • Comment number 20.

Morning again your Lordship, team, NYM and chargrilled blogers,

Firstly, thank you for the mensh and playing of the really-rather-lovely-but-ever-so-slightly-depressing Every Day is Like Sunday by Morrissey. But it sounded better than ever in the sunshine. And, errrr, I suppose, well, thanks also for the, ahem, mensh and playing of, say-it-in-a-quiet-voice-so-nobody-hears, Winchester Cathedral by the much-underrated New Vaudeville Band. A little bit of coincidental whimsy comes in handy every once in a while, and may even do you good. And as Billie said last night, it did dovetail rather well. Not sure Dr Mösh agreed though.

I have a rather fine ARFO crown - the summer straw version , akin to a panama - which I am more than happy to pass on to a fellow blogger at 5.05 (unless anybody's still watching Crackerjack). I see an orderly queue is already being formed. So no suggestion from me - I shall wait with dignity and pride for the new incumbent.

    Have a good day all

  • Comment number 21.

Raised on Robbery - Joni Mitchell

    Willy the Shake

  • Comment number 22.

    Morning all

Enjoyed the show again last night - it was, as has already been said, a really good theme.

Has anyone managed to find Nigel's balti recipe? I thought I'd give it a go on Sunday, but can't find it.

  • Comment number 23.

Good morning Simon, Team, NYM and blogpoppets!

Thought your blog was going to be about my life for a minute there, Simon. Phew! Bags collected so can chill a bit until the early alarm call on Monday.

#16 That was going to be my one PfM but I'll just be happy to hear it. Not sure I want the stress of having a suggestion in on my last ARF in the UK for a year ;-)

Heavy rain forecast for tomorrow? Surely not! Wish I hadn't just looked at the Stavanger forecast for next week :-(

  • Comment number 24.

  • Comment number 25.

    'L' word of the day....

Its the word I used to describe the way the otters were moving across the road when I saw them on my way back from work back in erm, erm... oh yes March 9th of this year. When all things new were just appearing and we had the long hot summer stretching out in front of us. Who would have thought that we would have to wait 7 months for the best of it to materialize?

    So yes LOLLOP it is.

Ps, just sat in a bed of nettles, I dont recommend it. Dont try this at home or anywhere else for that matter.

Going to be shuffling about a bit in my deckchair now.

  • Comment number 26.

#22 I had the same idea Tortie-cat, sounded fab didn't it? The recipe is on the DT Facebook page under 'notes' ... here is the link https://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=283025062830&ref=ts#!/simonmayodrivetime?sk=notes

  • Comment number 27.

#25 Ouch! Defo stick to the deckchair from now on MTF!

Forgot to mention my L word earlier ... LUSCIOUS :-)

  • Comment number 28.

Good morning Simon, team and poppets........

Had the most superb ride into work this am, the sun was shimmering as it slowy rose over the sea, the roads were dry and it really was the sweetest feeling..
Hence my ARF if i may please........."Sweetest feeling" Jackie Wilson :-)

    Enjoy the sun

  • Comment number 29.

#26 Thanks for the link Jilly.

#25 MTF Do you have any dock leaves nearby - aren't they supposed to calm the irritation of nettles?

    L word - LOVELY

    T x

  • Comment number 30.

#25 MTF, ahhhhhhhh, lollop! Always reminds me of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang :-)

My L-word: less infectious than three of its siblings (Pyor, Diar, and Gonor) but, in many ways, equally irritating

  • Comment number 31.

There are dock leaves nearby Tortie, not so sure about the green derriere look though :O

Harry, am just going to have to look for the meaning of that. Is it curable with over the counter remedies?

  • Comment number 32.

    Good afternoon,

    #25 MTF, ouch!

How's about LUSH? I loved the use of that word in Gavin & Stacey.

    As for ARFOs:

    REBEL YELL by Billy Idol

    Just because...

    Have a good day.x

  • Comment number 33.

#31 MTF, I think some sufferers have a monthly get-together at our local Vue cinema, at least they always seem to be visiting when I'm in there, and I fear it may be incurable.

  • Comment number 34.

L word - loquacious - another word that is applicable to this lovely blog (in the nicest possible way). Ooh, sneaked another "L" word in there ;-)

    Ouch, MTF!

  • Comment number 35.

LOL Julia, my Daughter is in uni in Brizzle and one of the latest expressions is Gert Lush!

I think it means 'approval' of?

Thats got to be somewhat annoying Harry!

Mo, what a lovely L word. Hope all going well with your plans. Am full of admiration for you.

I see most of the L words do indeed tend to lean towards the nicer things in life. JillyM yours is another lovely word.

Some of the more regular Bloggers not appeared yet?

Off to catch some more rays....

    Oh Raaaaaaaaaaay!

  • Comment number 36.

Thanks MTF, all appears to be under control now. Plan to leave work at 2.30 so I can sit down for a bit and take breath. And drink coffee outside with my pal ;-). Although, as I'm sure most of you will realise, I do actually thrive on this and am really looking forward to living and working in foreign parts. Shouldn't be any reason why I can't continue to participate on the blog and listen to the show on t'internet.

Can't wait to download "More Mayo" this week. Many Matt belly laughs to enjoy again!

  • Comment number 37.

ooh, and I have a "blog date" (as in "play date" for the avoidance of doubt and so Mrs Snapper doesn't panic if she's lurking) to look forward to with one of our gawjus blogpoppets 4 weeks tomorrow ;-)

Talking of which, I'm really missing Toots' contributions!

  • Comment number 38.

Good afternoon all - nearly made it this morning but computer was on a go slow and took ages to get going - a bit like me really I suppose!

or even BREAKOUT by the same. Hopefully neither will be appropriate...

  • Comment number 41.

Friday Greetings to Lord Ammo of Drivetime, Team, NYM and fellow blogpoppets!

Following a lovely message from the equally lovely Tortie, I thought I should pop by to say hello. Still miss you all hugely and I do lurk - just can't join in. Don't get to hear much of the show either. Contract ends in December so I will be making a full and flamboyant return to the blog then.

Big news - moving house on 14 October. Hurrah! Have bored you all with the house hunting/selling saga for almost a year and I still can't believe it is now happening.

Mo, best of luck with your move my friend. keep in touch!

    For old times:

    Noses please...........

    My L word - Languorous

  • Comment number 46.

Reading the blogs today I realise there are quite a few of us up here in the Halifax area. Good to know as I sit here staring longingly at the sunshine outside waiting to finish work!

Is it really as long ago as the hot summer of 1975 that we were singing along to WHO LOVES YOU by THE FOUR SEASONS! The sunshine always brings those memories back!

  • Comment number 47.

#37 Mo, I hope Mrs Snapper isn't lurking on here - she thinks I work when I'm in the shop ;-)

#41 AlexG, a big HELLO, hope the move goes without a hitch and I'm looking forward to your return to full-time blogging in December!

Am I too late for a glass of bubbly? Peta, best wishes to you and hope to see you again on the blog for a party.

I've had the most fabulous day taking a party of Norwegians around. Even managed to take them to the caste to finish off their day where they presented me with gifts of booklets of their home area (Troms - in the north) and a wonderful DVD of the Aurora Borealis.

Can't believe the heat and sun for the end of September - fantastic!
