Ding Dong

Simon Mayo | 06:28 UK time, Friday, 3 December 2010

Greetings to all bloggers wherever you may be. Friday already and the weekend arrives not a moment to soon. The promise of a balmy 2 degree increase soon is something to look forward to don't you think? Weather man Philip Eden on the show yesterday said there will be an easing of the freeze but almost before you can say Sepp Blatter it'll be back. But it's Arctic cold next time not Siberian cold, so we can't even blame the Russians.

First Carol Service last night after the show, child 3's school putting on a fine show. We 'Hark the Heralded' and 'Away in the Mangered' and, rather splendidly, Ding Dong Merrilyed'. I've always liked that one, especially the lung-crushing Glorrrrrrrrrria you have to go for. It's not exactly a Van Morrison moment but if the priest had suggested we did a G.L.O.R.I.A we'd have gone for it. Looking round, I did wonder if some parents were actually miming.

And it's child 3's birthday today-11 glorious years-and he wants, nay demands, a mention on "All Request Friday". Well it's cheaper than a present so he'll get it at some stage tonight. Percy Pigs and Haribo all round, we'll keep you some cake and you can have a go with his sonic screwdriver if you like.

First to 5Live with the good Doctor for some movie chat then to Radio 2 for the perfectly proportioned All Request Friday. Warm us all the brilliance of your choice below.

Have yourselves a supportive and fullsome Friday, see you 5.05.

Good Morning to Simon and to Deevs,

Last night you mentioned something about new Christmas songs. Guess what... I gather that Southgate & Leigh band I keep on about have released one. But as I don't suppose for one minute you will play it I will endorse MTF's regular request of TWILIGHT by ELO. Go on - make the toothy ones day and play her request.

    Enjoy the impending heatwave.x

Good Morning Simon, Team and Blogpoppets. And a very happy birthday Joe!

Simon, I love reading these little snippets about your life. One moment interviewing the stars, the next attending a school carol service. How rock and roll is that!

My ARF, or should I say SRF (Same Request Friday), is:

SOMETHING ABOUT YOU by Level 42.

    Laters..

    Morning all

Still stuck at home - roll on the heatwave, it was -10C overnight here! Although it does look lovely today; with the sun shining and the trees laden with snow.

    Happy Birthday Child 3.

ARF - ALLRIGHT NOW by Free, please.

    Back later

Songs that are nothing to do with Xmas that I remember from Xmas - mainly because of the end of the school term at Xmas, with several of us mucking around with tape recorders at the back of the class. Some played games, we played music and tried to create comedy versions of the songs instead. Happy days... :-)

Howard Jones - What Is Love
    Ray Parker Jr - Ghostbusters
Toy Dolls - Nellie The Elephant

And if none of those, something for MTF please...!!

    Have a good day everyone...

morning all :-D a lovely sunny morning here...and I can at last get out today. Our friend came last night with his digger and dug the road out... you can always do with such a friend in these parts!

    many thanks Simon

Happy Birthday to your 11 year old Simon.

How we all yearn for a mention on 'All Request Friday!'

In fact, I braved a 120 mile, trip last night in arctic conditions to buy a new charger cable for my laptop, just to ensure I could post my ARF.

Is that dedication or desperation, I am not sure!

Anyway, the song that I would so love to hear for my ARF is....

    Erm...

    Oh yes....

    *** Twilight *** by ELO.

Suitable listening for all age groups including 11 year olds and 48 year olds too.

    Pass us a percy pig.

Morning all lovely crisp one here in Pudsey, if a little on the Arctic side!

My ARF would be U2 of course and "Beautiful Day".

    Morning all

here is a little message from Billie last night, as she is not around this morning...

From Billy - The Girl Blogger - Pepper

Please, may I second MTF’s suggestion for TWILIGHT by ELO?
Or, if that’s not chosen, why not go for the blinding, show-opening, stonking - you’ll be wetting your pants in excitement - THE BEAT by The Look?

  • Comment number 12.

...and now I poop back to wish you all a very 'Good Morning.'

Blimey, that was a chilly one last night. Everywhere is deep frozen here, but there is wall to wall blue skies and everywhere is very sparkly.

I had the best nights sleep ever because I got the summer duvet back out and placed it on top of the winter duvet. Twas 'snuggle paradise'

The only set back was, that I woke up this morning, thinking it was Saturday, then reality set in, doh!

Never mind, Friday is the next best thing and as long as I dont wake up tomorrow and find out it is Monday, then all will be well.

Right, off to top up the bird feeders and refresh the bird bath.

    Back later for a natter.

Looking forward to the heatwave Julia.

  • Comment number 15.

MTF, from yesterday's blog - sorry to hear about your cable problems. The exact same thing happened to a friend of mine. Like you, she was very lucky to be around at the time and avoid a major disaster. I never leave my laptop plugged in, for that very reason.

BTW, I hope I didn't overstep the mark mentioning Simon's Child 3 by name. Jason Isaacs has referred to him a couple of times when he's been on the 5 Live show. So it's all his fault...

  • Comment number 16.

Good morning Simon, Team, Nice Young Man Who Chooses Tunes and fellow blog poppets!

A big happy birthday to Child 3!

Another cold one but feeling cheered by Julia's heatwave! Could I please request my SRF?

    Deevs,

    Courtesy of Time Vine:

I saw this bloke chatting up a cheetah and I thought he's trying to pull a fast one.

So I got home, and the phone was ringing. I picked it up and said "Who's speaking please?" And a voice replied "You are."

You know, somebody actually complimented me on my driving today. They left a little note on the windscreen, it said "Parking Fine" so that was nice.

I was stealing things in the supermarket today while balanced on the shoulders of vampires. I was charged with shoplifting on three counts.

So I fancied a game of darts with my mate. He said, "Nearest the bull goes first." He went "Baah" and I went "Moo." He said "You're closest."

Just thought I'd poop back in.

Have had a walk down to our local Morrisons (other supermarkets, etc ...); talk about siege mentality! We were queueing to the back of the shop - I'd only gone for a couple of bottles of wine (the essentials!)

I know the weather's a pain and I should be at work, but at least it gets people talking to each other, and smiling a lot too! (I'm a simple soul really!)

Good ARFternoon Each! Can I interest anyone in a Haribo selection, at a most reasonable price. Thus far, Haribo seem to have avoided the gaze of the panic buyers, unlike some stock items (Milk, bread, spuds etc).
Simon, if I cannot sell you Haribo, (Percy Pigs are not a stock item, I'm afraid), perhaps I can interest you in a delicious ARF instead. I'll offer you...

#25 Skeeve. Love it! Thanks for clarifying the Tim/Time though. As a relative newby I thought "time" might be some bloggism. Only just getting the hang of things like "ARF". Being a blogger is an education.

Love the candle photo on the Drivetime homepage. Makes me think of a Chinese proverb:

RATHER LIGHT A CANDLE THAN COMPLAIN ABOUT THE DARKNESS

It must be true because apparently the Chinese invented football and are therefore very clever.

Julia - iPod on at the mo (til 2pm when Steve Wright hits the airwaves), which makes a nice change. Listening to "Canibals" by Absent Elk. Top toon!

Tortie - I've got to brave the metropolis of Tesc0 later, and I am dreading it! I'm hoping lovely fella is back from his shopping trip to Brum (I think that's where he's gone ....) so that he can drive. To be honest, it makes me a bit nervous about posting over there incase they 'find' me and start trying to cause trouble here as well.

Deebee - no. She's been on my back for so long I just let it wash over me now. I hate myself for responding as it does make it awkward for others, but I refuse to let her spout her opinions without a right to reply. I think that's only human nature.

I just generally feel down. I need a break from work - our holiday in August seems ages ago now. Usually by this time of year I'm all shopped out and ready for Christmas, but apart from a few online bits, I've not even started yet and that's kind of scaring me too, if I'm honest.

I'll be ok. Just need to "man up" and sort myself out.

Off to brave the elements once more.

    Roll on Christmas.

  • Comment number 38.

#36 Deevs, it's perfectly okay to feel down. If we didn't have the down times, we wouldn't appreciate the up times nearly so much! And I know it's not always possible to 'pull yourself together' and 'snap out of it'. Just accept the fact that you're a bit under par at the moment, it's a phase and sooner or later something wonderful will happen. Like maybe Mr Rolastic will come home this evening with an enormous bunch of roses! (Nic, if you're lurking, take note!)

    Deebee X

PS I'll send you the bill for my counselling services later ;o)

    LOL! Yeh. Me too!

MTD made me laugh yesterday. Her profile pic at the mo is her and CLP, mine is me and Simon. On our Scrabs game on FB, MTD left me a message saying our profile pics at the top of our Scrabs game makes it look like the four of us are on some kind of surreal double date. It really made me giggle, so much so, I was compelled to share with Nic, and yep, he laughed too.

Just been sat out with our Receptionist. She's lovely and is justas frustrated with stuff here as me at the mo. We've agreed we could run this place a lot better between us!

    Good Morning All

Sorry for my disappearance yesterday. It turned into a bit of a hectic afternoon/evening, including a trip to the hairdressers and church, while somehow managing to fit in some dinner in between. I heard Tortie's ARF, and gave an extra big whoop! It was also lovely to hear Simon wishing his son a happy birthday on air. Make the most of it, Simon - give him another couple of years and it will be all too embarrassing.

The GD and I are off to Strictly this afternoon. See if you can spot us in the audience. If you haven't met me, you'll probably have seen my FB pics, and she's a younger, more beautiful (taller!) version. I probably won't be able to blog or tweet - in fact it says on the tickets that they take your phone away from you, although I can't quite believe that. I'll report back on how it was tomorrow (without of course giving any spoilers away - the Sunday results show is actually filmed tonight).

What weird weather. Despite torrential rain in the night there is plenty of snow, and ice, left on the ground, and it is foggy! All we need is a hurricane and we have pretty much all meteorological conditions covered here in Hampshire.

All of the above helped me decide to give this morning's 5k run a miss. So have the morning to do some baking instead.

Happy (and safe) Saturday to you all

Just spent the last hour or two trying to do what Mother Mature CBA to do here. Clearing away a two inch layer of ice from the pavement outside the shop. I was quite amused after my toil to see folk slipping on the ice, and avoiding the now clear path. I said to one such passerby, that I was left feeling a touch disappointed that my efforts did not seem to have been merited, seeing as everyone was continuing to walk on the treacherous surfaces. She said that she was pleased to see that someone still had a sense of community spirit, and that it reminded her of her childhood, when everyone would clear the snow from the pavements outside their own property, perhaps putting down a sprinkling of ash from the home fire. In no time, the pavements would be safe to walk upon. Seeing as that attitude now seemed to be a thing of the past, she thought it would be nice to leave my cleared bit of footpath undisturbed by her own feet, for fear of messing it up again. Sometimes, you just cant win. ;0)

    Snow has gone!!

Kittens most disappointed. They expressed this at 6am by:

    1. Doing an enormous on the carpet by Mr P's side of the bed
    2. Trashing the bathroom - shower gel and shampoo bottles all thrown into the bath, towels dragged into the bath, topped off by toothbrushes put into the bath
    3. Pulling over the clothes horse and the drying laundry.

    Hi All

Just a quick poop by - it's been quite a hectic weekend all in all. We had a great time at Strictly yesterday - will probably say more about it tomorrow (no time now). I've been busy this afternoon making Christmas cake, which has just come out of the oven and smells delicious! And I've made a start on writing the Christmas cards. I seem to have acquired quite a few new friends this year... ;o) Which is a good thing, but does it mean I should drop some of the others that I haven't heard from all year off my list? Interesting conundrum...

#85 LOL, Paul! I had a picture of Luey thrusting the paintbrush back in your hand and dragging you away from the computer. Hope you didn't get any paint on the screen!

    Evening all!

Lovely lunch with brother in law, sister in law and nephew. Nephew at age 7 is turning into a cracking little chap.

First Christmas cd is being listened to - Blind Boys of Alabama. If you don't have it, rush out tomorrow and get it. It's my favourite. Super version of 'In the Bleak Midwinter' featuring Chrissie Hynde.

Glad SCD was good Deebee. On the card front, I have a Christmas card book. If I don't receive a card 2 years running, theyare off the list. Cruel? Maybe!!!

    Have a snug evening everyone

    Alex
