Books etc!

Simon Mayo | 08:37 UK time, Friday, 24 September 2010

The Drivetime office is always awash with cds as you would expect but now we have a mountain of books to climb over too. Since we mentioned our plans to launch the Radio 2 Book Club, paperbacks, hardbacks, thrillers, romances, historical fiction and a few Jilly Coopers have all appeared. We will hopefully come up with something for everyone as we'll do 2 books a month. The online form should explain everything if you wish to sign up. We hope to announce our first books shortly. But first, meetings must be held.

A 2 show Friday today with movies at 5 Live first with Dr K reviewing The Hole in 3D, Enter the Void and Eat, Pray, Love. And others, if we can stop wittering. Then it is off to don the leathers for the bike to get to another all request Friday. Last week in Newcastle was fun but home studio is home studio and this week it wont just be me in a darkened cubicle at the end of the corridor. ARF is the simplest format ever but (thank you Chris) delivers every week. There are so many trips, holidays, partys and family get-togethers to report, I almost feel I'm part of them. Even if I go home to a frankly rather dull weekend of being taximan and homework assister.

But it needs that opening song really...Go on, set the standard. See you at 1705

    Morning All,

    My ARF/SRF 'Dignity' Deacon Blue

Out on my travels now, so play nicely and have a good day everybody

  • Comment number 3.

I'll ask for the usual :)

AFTER THE GOLD RUSH by Prelude for the show opener please.

  • Comment number 4.

    Thanks and Good Morning Simon,

We have had quite a 'love in' on the blog this week and I think this song would do nicely to end the week.

    Good Morning Everyone

No request from me today. I've done so well this week, thanks Simon.

Please send all our Good Luck Wishes to Pauline.

  • Comment number 8.

Simon, my ARF goes back to Chris' days of presenting the Drivetime Show.

Somehow, he never got around to plying it, despite my weekly pleas, which then continued onto your show and have been repeated ever since.

So now into the 12th month of trying.....

    Please could you play..

    **** TWILIGHT ****

    Thats it, pure and simples!

Twould make my day, my month and even my year!

    Happy days.

  • Comment number 9.

Ps, I meant play not ply, doh!!!

  • Comment number 10.

ARF opener this week must be U2 "Where the Streets Have No Name" . This is honour of the Villains trip to Wolves on Sunday!

    Have a great weekend everyone.

  • Comment number 11.

we are all creatures of habit on here...so once more to my SRF offering...

...it's a horrid day here in the Shire, this is such a fine happy song that can't fail to lift your spirits even if you're not a soulie :-D

(I'm working on the 'attrition theory'...Simon will just get so worn down by my request he will actually play it one week to shut me up)

  • Comment number 12.

    Mornign Simon, Team and poppets!

I am going to revert to an old ARF request mainly because it is such a grey day and this tune is a sunshiny one. So:

TWIST & SHOUT - Chaka Demus & Pliers

Although I love Madchicksters suggestion and of course "Twilight" is a given.

  • Comment number 13.

Something from Family I think would be appropriate.... Burlesque perhaps, or Anyway, would both be a magnificent start to the high quality drivetime program - Listened to Jilly making Simon squirm which was just excellent radio....

  • Comment number 14.

    Morning all

Not really here as v busy again.

My Arf is Never can tell - Chuck Berry

PS Good luck this week MTF, you never can tell!

  • Comment number 15.

    morning from a windy Liverpool,

my ARF is Mr Brightside by the killers. this song reminds me of a family wedding we went to a few years ago and the dj played this song and the dance floor filled up with the bride, groom and all their friends bouncing and singing along to this.

hope everyone has a great weekend.

  • Comment number 16.

    Morning all

Grey, wet and very windy here in East Yorks!

My ARF is DELERIOUS LOVE - Neil Diamond

I didn't manage to get tickets to his Electric Prom, so would like to hear this as a consolation, please Simon.

    Back later

    Tortie x

  • Comment number 17.

    G~B what did you say??

  • Comment number 18.

    Morning All

My ARF request for today is:-

    Wonderful World - Joey Ramone

because ...... this week has been really tough, work wise. I've basically spent a lot of time in tears at home and at work, and as some of you know, am currently on the hunt for a new place of employment. My lovely man, the FantasticRolastic, has been an absolute star. He's convinced me that I can't be superwoman and has comforted me and given huggles when I@ve most needed them. I can honestly say that when I'm with him it really is a Wonderful World.

    Thanks Simon.

peeees@ good luck mtf too! x

  • Comment number 19.

    #17 - I've sent you a message Tortie. :s

  • Comment number 20.

Oh dear Gaily - you've been modded! I thought I read your post and can't remember it being naughty!

Deevs - if it is ANY consolation, I would employ you like a shot.

Just looked out the window of the tower and wish I hadn't - complete white out so am obviously in the clouds. Wonder what the weather is on the ground floor? Quite a spooky feeling!

  • Comment number 21.

    Btw, thank you Mods.

  • Comment number 22.

    Thank you Alex!

I am starting to get paranoid as to why I'm not getting jobs. I never get nervous at interviews, like to think I come across as confident and "together" but obivously this is going against me. I just don't get it.

Or maybe it's my accent: stranger in a strange town syndrome!?!?

I keep telling myself that something's just around the corner but at the mo, it's just disappointment.

At least it's Friday at last!

  • Comment number 23.

#20 - I asked to be modded, Alex, as I felt my choice of ARF opener was totally insensitive. :s

  • Comment number 24.

Aw Deevs, I'm so sorry to hear of your troubles at work. Fingets crossed you get a good offer soonly my lovely.

  • Comment number 25.

    Happy Friday

Please may I request Rocks by Primal Scream ... get your rocks off, get your rocks off honey, shake it now now, get 'em off downtown ...it's the weekend xx

  • Comment number 26.

For today's starter how about Argent's God Gave Rock & Roll To You, or even the Kiss version

  • Comment number 27.

    #19 I've replied Gail

  • Comment number 28.

    Afternoon all

And Hi Simon. Can you please play "Ramble On" by the might Led Zeppelin as the ARF opener.

  • Comment number 29.

That of course should be the "mighty" Led Zeppelin.

  • Comment number 30.

Gaily, are we connected on FB? Not sure. If not, send me a request if you would like to.

  • Comment number 31.

#26 SG excellent choice of Argent, not enough played on radio, even if you don't get it today I thionk its well worth a try for Matt's mid week mosh.

  • Comment number 32.

Any sign of PO'SH or KatyMac today?

Has she gone to present him with a hat as he is still partly roofless?

I think we need to know.

  • Comment number 33.

    Good ARFternoon Each!

'Hannah We Know' by Tiny Dancers.

    'nuff said!

  • Comment number 34.

Cross posting there, Andy. I actually have a new, glistening, perfectly functioning roof. Even as I type, the final bits of cladding are being fixed to the new dormers. The builders can now start on the inside of the property, and REALLY make a mess. (Trembles)

  • Comment number 35.

Oh, Tortie, if you are there...

Both John Simm and John Nettles getting rave reviews in the Sheffield Star for Hamlet. Some are saying that Simm has finally claimed his place as one of the finest actors of his generation for his role at The Crucible. You and your Mum seem to be in for a treat.

  • Comment number 36.

    Hello PO'SH

Glad you've got a roof finally in what sounds like some sort of retail Grand Design saga. Did spoil the start of a promising gossipy thread of you and KatyMac but never mind ;).

  • Comment number 37.

Paul - congrats on the roof!!! Sounds like "Give Me Shelter" would have been a more appropriate ARF for this week, and perhaps "Living in a Box" for next!!!

  • Comment number 38.

    #27 - Tortie - I've replied.

    #30 - I've sent a friend request.

  • Comment number 39.

AG - or possibly Up on the Roof - The drifters!

  • Comment number 40.

Morning all! I come humbly offering apologies again for failing to mention the bloggers last Friday on air - I got that much GBH on the earhole from people I didn't mention, I think I need to try to do it again to get them all in this time :-P

    So so so sorry everybody!

Get you GB breaking the HOUSE RULES!!! Naughty.

How is everybody doing today? 3 word Friday for me has to be - JOB INTERVIEW MONDAY (PRESENTATION COMING ALONG)

    Weasant Pleekend

  • Comment number 41.

Thank you all for your kind regards. There have been a few moments when Tommy Coopers 'Don't Jump Off The Roof, Dad' might have seemed an appropriate ARF. Still apt though, 'Devils And Dust' by Bruce Springsteen.

Oh, well, it's been brief, but back to it. Good luck with the ARF's.(And Good luck on Monday, MP.

  • Comment number 42.

Cheers Paul - and best wishes with the roof! 'Dancing on the Ceiling'?

  • Comment number 43.

    Blood on the Rooftops? :-)

  • Comment number 44.

#35 Thanks Paul - I'm really looking forward to it. I'll let you have my review on Monday!

  • Comment number 45.

Simon, I'm so happy to know that your weekend is as fun-filled and thrilling as mine! No homework assisting for me tho' - funnily enough the 16 year old G~B thinks he knows more than me so never asks for help. The 10 year old G~B rather worryingly hasn't had any homework so far this term. My weekend will be mainly taxiing - the elderG~B and some mates to an over 16s(!?!) disco (it sounds to be one of these DJ battle type things so disco probably isn't the correct terminology, however the fount of all knowledge isn't here at the mo for me to ask) and the youngerG~B to footie training tomorrow and a match on Sunday.

  • Comment number 46.

afternoon everyone my request to start the show is "we are family-sister sledge"dedicated to the bloggers as one big family lol

Just been harvesting the last of the tomatoes and the plums before the really grotty weather sets in. Its windy, cold, grey but still (atm) dry. So how about

The Eurythmics and "Here comes the rain again" as ARF opener before it does.

  • Comment number 59.

    #57 - Suits you Gazza!

Hey there The Webbmeister, you're so lucky getting the last of the fruit harvest in before the rain comes on - we have had a day of lashing rain and high winds. Dry at the mo but the clouds look very threatening.

Well then you gorgeous and much loved Blogpoppets just over an hour 'til the ARF opener - good luck with your requests.

I'm off to empty some cupboards - long and consequently boring story.

In case I don't manage to stoop by later, have a fabby weekend.

    Toodle-oo for noo.

    Gaily~B - she of the tilde! :)

  • Comment number 60.

    Bye Gaily! (Nice tilde)

Also offski. Have a good one everybody!

  • Comment number 63.

    Hi Everyone.

    Been out today.

Gazza - good to "see" you in the afternoon. You do have lovely thoughts.

GailyB - I read your #5 this morning but can't remember what it was. Why did you think it was insensitive?

MTF - maybe you'll get your wish on the first Fri. after the clocks go back - because then it will be TWILIGHT at 5.05!

Good Luck to you all for the opener. Hope it's a blogger.

  • Comment number 64.

Have I broken it - or is everyone too sad?

  • Comment number 65.

  • Comment number 71.

    Evening everyone,

It was a Bruce Springsteen opener - blimmin' 'eck, I can't remember which one. It wasn't someone from the blog either - I didn't recognise the name at all.

BP - I'll message you on FB. Are you on the blogpoppets' page? I think I may need a clue to find you?

Did you get the call MTF?

I hope everyone has a fabby weekend.

'See' you all Monday - bright eyed and bushy tailed.

    Happy Saturday Blogsteroonies

Youngest's Birthday today - 10.32am to be precise. Arrived on due date after 2 and a half hour labour. Very efficient!

Sorry no show yesterday - helping a friend in need which turned into an all-dayer and all-eveninger. Chinese food delivery at 10.30 - comatose by 11.30. Tired or what?

Deebee - am likely to have missed your grand passing of my house yesterday, but here's to a pleasant weekend in Dorset with your Mum and family. You asked where I get my little pics and symbols from - I C&P them from 'other places' on the internet, Facebook usually. Saw this one the other day so I snaffled it. Reminds me of the 'Kilroy Was Here' graffiti:

  • Comment number 73.

Is it this weekend that Madchickster is saying farewell to her youngest chick?

My thoughts are with you. You gave them the roots to grow and the wings to fly. What more can a parent do? Be proud.

  • Comment number 74.

Thank you Katy, yes we deliver her on Sunday.

We are very proud of her. Thank you for your very kind and thoughtful words.

I am sure that your friend was very grateful for all your help yesterday. Wishing you and yours a wonderful weekend.

    Mcw x

  • Comment number 75.

    Happy birthday to KatyMac's youngest!

MCW, I hope your chick is delivered safely and happily and that you don't feel too lonely.

A weekend of cooking, cleaning and gardening awaits. In the meantime, it's a nice cup of coffee with Brian Matthews.

    Have a good one!

  • Comment number 77.

    Hello All

Katy, you sound like a great friend. Happy birthday to your youngest GD.

Mcw, I'll be thinking of you tomorrow. I can't put it any better than Katy has done so ably. I'm sure your GD is a real credit to you. Hope it all goes well. I bet I can guess what you 3 word Monday is going to be.

Our leader has been tweeting that his cold has come back. He sounds quite sorry for himself, bless him. Simon, hope you feel better soon.

Off to get some lunch. Hope everyone enjoys the rest of the weekend.

    Deebee X

  • Comment number 78.

'Ooh, s'chilly!' says Luey. I reckon she is just nesh.

Happy weekends to all, especially the birthdayers.

  • Comment number 79.

    Evening All

    Sorry about being missing.

It's been a truly B-EEEAAAUUU-TIFUL day here on Anglesey and we have been outside gardening.

To catch up from last night ........

#71 GailyB - I'm not on FB. Don't fancy it. Still intrigued about which song. Just stick the title in a comment and see if I'm clever enough to work it out!

#72 Happy Birthday to KatyMacs youngest.

#73/74 What lovely words Katy to MCW.

Good Luck to the MCW family for tomorrow.

    Hi to AlexG/Deebee and POS.

Hi Gazza Hope you're enjoying yourself just not working!

  • Comment number 80.

It's been beautiful in Dorset too, but it's turning a bit cold now. Will soon be winter duvet time.

BP, it was the title of the song that was the problem. Gaily self-modded, she did absolutely the right thing. Probably best to leave it there.

    Deebee X

  • Comment number 81.

Hope the above didn't sound to curt. I just wanted to save Gaily further mortification. I'm sure you'll understand, Billy.

  • Comment number 82.

    Hi All,

Just pooped by, been lovely day here, bit chilly now.
    Happy Birthday to KatyMac's youngest

Hope the weekend is going well for one and all

  • Comment number 83.

    Hi Everyone,

Sorry to hear your cold has returned Simon - get well soonly.

Happy birthday Katy's GD - I hope she's had a wonderful day Katy.

Good luck to MCW's young chick (and you MCW, you know we're here should you ever feel a bit fed up, we're the bloggers to cheer). Katy, you always say things in such a lovely, meaningful way.

Deebee - thank you, you're so lovely. BP - I'm sorry my lovely, I just can't explain on here or I'd have to self-mod again.

BB - it's been beautiful here today, a bit chilly and a bit windy but sunny for the most part. PoSh, if it's as chilly in Sheffield as it is in Lincolnshire today, Luey is most certainly not nesh. It's freezing. I couldn't believe it, last night I had the winter duvet back on the bed, jim-jams (sans pants) and bedsox on and still couldn't get to sleep, I was soooo cold. Anyhoo, the good news is, two chaps have been today and mended my central heating, the hoose is soooo cosy tonight. The youngerGB asked me to turn down the heating, earlier!!! RESULT!!! You don't know what it means to me - we spent most of last winter sans heating. Bit of a challenge but we felt quite triumphant when Spring arrived and we realised we had survived the coldest winter for yonks.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend you gorgeous bloggers.

Hope you don't mind Alex - just want to pop kisses on everyone's noses. (I do it to my kids - even now when they're 16 and 10.)

    Night night and sweet dreams.

    Gaily~B (still loving the tilde)

  • Comment number 84.

    Hello folks ,
feels strange for me to be here,as I'm from over the other side of the fence.

Simon,I hope you don't mind me popping in for a visit and test the waters but as I've heard a lot about this here blog ,I thought I'd pop in and say Hello.

Just also wanted all you followers to know that if they were wondering where MTF is ,well she's here with Mr B and myself .she decided to fly in for the w/end for a long over due visit .

Must say she is looking very well and we are having a lovely w/end catching up .

Must go now but you never know ,I might just pop in and say hello again ,that's if you don't mind.

Best wishes Bids .xxx ....friend of MTF .

    Sunday's 'Spot The Difference' ...

On Friday 20th August 2010 Simon posted his blog entitled:
    "Books etc"

He obviously believes that THIS blog that we're posting in is more exciting/surprising/shocking/funny because this one is called:
    "Books etc!"

  • Comment number 87.

And Bids! - it's bloomin' marvellous to have you here.
Champion - as they say oop north - which is where I come from.

Hope you and the MTF enjoy the rest of your time together. As I live somewhere in between you two should I assume that the Puffball will be passing close by me at some point on the return journey? Come to think of it - is Deebee returning eastwards and also passing by?

It all paints a very pleasant picture, know what I'm saying?

  • Comment number 88.

    Good morning one and all!!

Got most of the chores done yesterday so today is a finishing off the odds and ends kind of day. It was beautiful yesterday but got really cold in the evening so we curled up in front of a fire.

    Lovely to see you Bids!

Hi to everyone else. Have a good Sunday!

  • Comment number 89.

    Morning all

I've just removed the curse on the Electric Proms ticket selling arrangements. I've just managed to buy one.

I assume that the tickets must simply have not gone on sale when Mr Evans said they were going on sale, rather than having been sold out when I looked.

So I will be seeing Percy after all. Happy days :-)

  • Comment number 90.

    Hurrah for Ken!

  • Comment number 91.

    #89 Excellent news Ken

  • Comment number 92.

    Katy ♥ Percy

  • Comment number 93.

Hurrah again - everything sparkles and smells nice (apart from Mr P who is in the garden cutting back Bruce, a rather rampant Forsythia). Spot of lunch then onto the cookfest to make meals for the week ahead.

    A virtuous Alex-Girl

  • Comment number 94.

    Hello lovely blogpoppets.

That is indeed splednid news, Ken. We talked about getting tickets to see Neil Diamond - Mr B was a bit of a fan back in the day, but we didn't in the end. I'm sure you'll have a fab time - look forward to hearing about it.

Lovely to see you over here, Bids. Hope you'll come back again, it's a very warm and fluffy place here! You'll probably recognise one or two familiar faces as well. Thank you for looking after our MTF this weekend. She's very precious to us, as I know she is 'next door'.

Just cooking roast gammon for lunch, then we'll be making our way back home. I'll look out for Puffball on route. It would be a strange and lovely coincidence if we passed each other by Katy's house!

    Deebee X

  • Comment number 95.

Deebee, I expect you have set off by now but.... you wont be seeing Puffball on your travels, as she is parked up outside Bids house for another night.

Katy, I may well by flying past your way, tomorrow at some point, not sure when though but I will give you a big wave.

Having a chiil out now while the chuck is cooking.

We have been out to do some retail therapy today and I am proud to say, that my purse remains intact! Thats my kind of shopping.LOL!

Maybe I will try a bit harder tomorrow, when we hit the GunWharf, where we will be Ladies wot lunch!

Great news Ken. All turn out well in the end eh. Good things come to those that wait. Happy days indeedio.

Alex, have you got that fire going yet? Tis turning proper chilly now.

Mmmmm, lovely aromas of chicken are wafting through.

Is it slurp o' clock yet Bids?

  • Comment number 96.

    Evening All.

Just a quickie. Another lovely Anglesey day again but it is getting colder now. Mr. BP just lighting fire.

MTF - it was slurp o'clock here just when Mr. O'Grady started!

    #80/81 Deebee - that's fine. Dim problem.

    Hope everyone having nicetimes.
