Camping it up

Simon Mayo | 07:23 UK time, Friday, 27 August 2010

I blog this morning while watching the great pictures from Cornwall where Chris is doing his show today. There's nothing quite like the look of campers who have got up early. It's a rumpled, crumpled look. Too early for brushing hair. Too early for washing. It says canvas, anorak and dampness. And having a ball.
The lack of rain also means we are all automatically thrilled. The last week has been so dismal in some parts that we will pleased this weekend if it doesn't snow. The crowd with Chris look strangely familiar too. I'm sure I recognise some faces from the St Ives roadshow in 1990. I'm thinking of getting out my roadshow shorts again for one more spin around the block.
Well meantime we have an All Request Friday to contemplate. Top songs, top calls and texts from frustrated motorway dwellers who wont make it to the pub in time. Plus that first song chosen by you! Set that bar as high as it will go.
Enjoy your Friday, see you at 5.05.

    Morning Simon and everyone

    Wet day again here!

    csn. xx

  • Comment number 2.

I intended to second the first request, but it aint here yet. I second whatever it is anyway!

  • Comment number 3.

The blog seems to be fixed. Whoopee!!!

  • Comment number 4.

    Morning Simon and morning campers,

Please would you consider Baba O'Riley by The Who for my ARF request.

    Mcw x

  • Comment number 5.

Hello and Happy Friday to Simon & Team and Fellow Blogpoppets :^)

Am watching CLP's Show In A Field this morning with the legends that are Richard & Judy - what a cheerful start to a Bank Holiday weekend which promises much ..

ARF opener? I've been successful a couple of times so will happily support all boppet requests that originate in *here* and not in twitland. LOL.

  • Comment number 6.

    Morning all!

    Simon, please play:

    'Cracklin' Rosie' - Neil Diamond

For my little Rosie kitten who has been so poorly but is now better. We are on holiday and I miss her already but I left the radio on so she will hear her song!! Also for Dylan the Rabbit who has also been poorly.

    Thanks Simon!

  • Comment number 7.

    Hi de hi

I'm still going to work in my shorts and flip-flops, despite the near zero temperature

Please may I suggest The Things You Do For Love by 10CC as the ARF opener today

    Flip flop, flip flop ...

  • Comment number 8.

    Morning all

As we're on a cornish theme (ish) can I bid for the hat and request the Floral Dance by Sir Terrance of Wogan.

    I'll get my coat!

  • Comment number 9.

    Morning Simon, Team and Blogpoppets

For ARF please may I request

'While you see a chance' by Steve Winwood

It has a great intro which will set people up for the weekend.

    Deebee X

  • Comment number 10.

love to hear @the sweetest feeling' Jackie Wilson

btw 'shep' riding on my crossbar and flock stacked in formation on my saddle bag..te-he-he ;-)

  • Comment number 11.

Morning Simon, morning campers, morning everyone.

Please please please for ARF openers may we have THE BEAT by The Look? It's definitely a starter for a weekend.

Shall I request this 99 times more?

  • Comment number 12.

If I've asked for this once, I've asked for it a hundred times and no I am not exaggerating!!!

    My ARF as usual is....

    **** Twilight ****

    By ELO please.

I will be one of those poor souls sat on the M5 today and I wont be coming back from a holiday or in fact even be going on one. Nope just the everyday slog of a tooth fairy who happens to be mobile. ( most of the time!)

    Happy days. Whatever!!

  • Comment number 13.

    Alex, #6 ...

That is so sweet. Thank you.xx

  • Comment number 14.

#10 I am looking forward to when you speak to Simon this evening and tell him about your bicycling exploits!

#12 Good luck MTF! Actually, how many times have you asked for it? Are you keeping count?

  • Comment number 15.

No Deebee, I lost count a long time ago. Its got to be coming up for almost a year!

Hey, the suns just come out. All of a sudden, nothing else seems to matter.

  • Comment number 16.

The sun's come out here too, MTF.

  • Comment number 17.

    Morning All,

Suggest for ARF 'Dignity' Deacon Blue

    Have a good day everybody

  • Comment number 18.

How about for the first song this Friday

The Call - Let the Day Begin

It was very sad to hear of the early passing away of Michael Been, but hearing the song again was a reminder of what an amazing tune it actually is, a fitting opener for todays all request Friday

  • Comment number 19.

    Hi gang.

Simon, you lovely lovely man, can you please contemplate playing

for my Nic. He really does make everything grooooooooovy!

  • Comment number 20.

I seem to have got away with my dodgy choice earlier ;)

Simon please can you play Deev's choice as she's having a hard week.

Colin - As much as I agree with you, Simon played it earlier in the week as a tribute to MB. But I'd gladly hear it again.

Might play something else tho, I still believe is a great track instead.

  • Comment number 21.

For ARF today, I would like to hear

PRETTY IN PINK ~ Psychedelic Furs

    Thanks Simon
    Sylvia B x

  • Comment number 22.

#18 Colin - excellent choice - THE CALL

"Here's to the babies in a brand new world
Here's to the beauty of the stars
Here's to the travelers of the open road
Here's to the Dreamers in the bars
Here's to the teachers in the crowded rooms
Heres to the workers in the fields
Here's to the preachers of the sacred words
Here's to the driver at the wheel .."

  • Comment number 23.

#20 AAAAgh - didn't know that Andy and I posted before I saw your comment AND the blog is misbehaving again .... grrrrrr

  • Comment number 24.

I always knew you were a woman with great taste!

  • Comment number 25.

Should maybe be The Floral Dance by Terry Wogan
since the Breakfast Show was in Cornwall today!!!!

    Not heard it in ages!!!!

  • Comment number 26.

PS: Simon, when are you going to do an outside broadcast?

  • Comment number 27.

and Andy ....'got away with it', eh?

    For Mr Toverson's post #8

    ....................◒ . ◒
    .................... ~

  • Comment number 28.

    No.20 - thank you Andy.

I've just re-applied my make up and am determined not to bawl any more today but yes, this week has been absolutely horrific (at work, home is perfect!)

Roll on 5.05 when I can go home and await the arrival of my Wild Thing for our weekend of being Happy Together ......

  • Comment number 29.

Afternoon Simon as you mostly seem to ignore my tweets I thought I'd try this!

Opening tune has to be U2 "In the name of love"

Please play as I am feeling a little down this week being a Villa fan.

  • Comment number 30.

    #25 Hi deliasmiff!

Anditoverson requested that in post #8 which is why he was awarded the 'Hat of Inappropriate Bloggetry' - if you'd like one - just say the word -
[or you can just C&P the one in my post #27] LOL

Personally, I hope that Simon agrees that Cornwall has had quite enough exposure today and plays something connected to the rest of our lovely country ..

  • Comment number 31.

It's a bit quiet on here today. Some good suggestions though - fingets crossed for a blogpoppet ARF opener. I am deliberately keeping away from Twitter, which I fear may lessen my chances but here is where my loyalty lies!

#28 Deevs, sorry to hear you've been having a bad week. I don't go 'next door' very often so I'm not up to speed. Thank goodness we've got a long weekend coming up.

#26 I love that idea! Although maybe it should be next year now - we might have had the best of the summer weather :(

  • Comment number 32.

Hello Delia welcome to the blog.

I assumed that Katy was being kind not giving you the hat as a newbie.

Please stay and join in the fun.

  • Comment number 33.

    Hello Simon,

First time request , Bram, Van 3000 , Drinking in LA .

    Thank you

  • Comment number 34.

    Marsha, nice to see you.

What would you be drinking in LA?

My guess would be Hot Chocolate??

  • Comment number 35.

I am getting a bit long in the tooth it seems, and am finding it difficult to understand even very short posts. Anyway, welcome Marsh Mallow.

  • Comment number 36.

My ARF - Cherry Ghost - Thirsty for Romance.

    I thank you.

  • Comment number 37.

There, that woke you all up.

  • Comment number 38.

    zzzzzzz...............what was that!!!!

  • Comment number 39.

    Afternoon All,

Blimey it is quiet in here. Just got back from the dentists(again)- only go for check ups for the last 30 odd years and now I'm on first name terms with them!! Hopefully the medicated filling will stop the toothache!

#21 Love that song Delia. Reminds me of the film with Molly Ringwald and the rest of the so-called Brat pack members of the '80's.It also featured that lovely OMD track 'If You Leave'.
Hiya Marsha Mallow, methinks we have met before, possibly the chocolate mad girl from next door?

    Mcw x

  • Comment number 40.

Hello Marsha [MC] - nice to see you here - we could do with a boost of bloggers from next door, to be honest. Most of our regulars have deserted us, which is upsetting me more than I thought possible ...

  • Comment number 41.

#40 I'm still here Katy - just haven't got my witty knickers on today.

  • Comment number 42.

    Kev's busy at work
    Paul's rebuilding his shop
    Tortie's on holiday
Gaily's probably having a day with her GBs (don't think she works Fridays)
    Spike's awol
    Darren's double awol

Who else do you want to know about?

  • Comment number 43.

    Am still here, occasional slumbering!

  • Comment number 44.

    #43 Yes, I saw you BB - that's why I didn't mention you.

I'm off home now, but I will be pooping back later after I get there. Chin up, Katy!

    Deebee X

  • Comment number 45.

I've been sussing out a trail for my running club to run on Monday night ... along some very overgrown footpaths ... and over several wobbly stiles ... will have to take my secateurs with me when I lay it or there could be some unhappy runners ... just off to tend my wounds

  • Comment number 46.

Just been picking blackberries and it reminded me of

"Blackberry Way" by The Move please Simon.

    Thank you SB88

  • Comment number 47.

PS: Not many messages today.... where is everybody?

  • Comment number 48.

Hi Everyone and, of course, Simon and The Team,

Apologoes for my abstinence today - I've been out with my girlfriends this morning for coffee - aw it did me so much good - they are so totally gorgeous. After lunch, my mate asked came over to help me tidy my garage so he can store some stuff there. I've been to the tip this afternoon - really my day can't get any better. Well, it could, if you were to choose my ARF Simon,

I realise it's probably too late with less than hour to go.

Anyhoo, good luck to all the suggestioners.

Deevs - sorry you've had a rubbish week. Take the good of a long weekend - hopefully things can only get better for you. I had a bit of a rubbish day yesterday - have had a serious falling out with my big sis which has upset me greatly - but my girlfriends have been absolute angels today and made me feel a whole lot better about myself.

Deebee - thank you for our counselling session on t'other side last night. I will e-mail a response to your texts as soon as I get the opportunity. All I'll say is, please don't worry, it's so not worth it. You're totally gorgeous and you shouldn't let it get to you. :)

Katy are you still there my lovely?

Alex-G - nice to see you.

Hey Delia, I think you left a clue to your identity - you're not a newbie, are you? Merely a wee change of name. Nice to see you, anyhow.

Warm welcome to Marsha Mallow (is it really MC from t'other side?) - I hope you can hang around and join in.

Hey Paul, mind out for that chunk of rubble, look, it's just there, down by your left foot.

BB - don't be dropping off, you might miss home time and end up in work 'til Tuesday.

    Gaily x

  • Comment number 49.

Hey Alsion, I ran with the 'big boys' from my running club the other week - the last mile or so we ended up running along the river bank in the village which was a lot more overgrown than anyone could have anticipated - it was a case of just keep on running and don't worry about scratches / nettle stings as there was no alternative route and it would have taken too long to pick your way through safely. I enjoyed it - it was fab. Might be better to get out there with a scythe before Monday, sounds like the secateurs just couldn't hack it. (Did you see what I did there??? Did you?)

  • Comment number 50.

Just pooped in the butcher's on the way home, and he gave me a large bone for my GP*. Oscar's now sitting on the lawn happy as Larry - think he'll be there for some time.

Gaily, thank YOU too - it's always lovely to chat to you. So glad you had a good time with your friends.

    *Gorgeous Pooch

  • Comment number 51.

Well looky - I got the 50, without even trying. Katy - please will you come back and give me a hat? Kaaaattteeeeeeeeeyyyyyyyyy!

  • Comment number 52.

Cometh the hour, cometh the ARF opener. Is it just me who starts to get butterflies at this time on a Friday?

  • Comment number 53.

#49 - scythe sounds much more fun

  • Comment number 54.

Katy! A hat for Deebee please! I know it is now a wave for fifty, but it is Friday and I, like Gaily, think Deebee is rather special too!

Our GP is also sitting on the lawn with a bone, probably not as tasty as the butchers, but every little helps!

  • Comment number 55.

ARF how bout he aint heavy hes my brother

  • Comment number 56.

Well done to newbie Simon Ward. Talk about beginner's luck! Good choice.

So we're "a fine bunch of bloggers". Thanks, Simon. I like that :o)

#54 MCW, I think you're special too. In fact you all are (this is starting to be my Friday anthem). Is it a wave for 50? I'd be just as happy with a wave. Although I'm not sure we'll make it to 100 at this rate - but then again Simon's not back to Tuesda so you never know...

  • Comment number 57.

#56 blogpoppet days of the week: Monda, Tuesda, Wednesda, etc..

  • Comment number 58.

Maybe Alison should re-introduce the Sweepstakes idea- will definitely make the century then! ;-)

  • Comment number 59.

Well done, Simon! The blog is a mighty powerful thing!

  • Comment number 60.

    Well done Simon

    Congrats on the 50 Deebee

You are all indeed 'a fine bunch of bloggers'

  • Comment number 61.

    Congrats. Simon.

Happy for you and envious at the same time!?

  • Comment number 62.

Well done MCW for your text mensh earlier! I did a little whoop for you. I was going to text in myself - probably too late now. Out of interest, what time did you send the text?

  • Comment number 63.

I'll do it. For Deebs 50...

  • Comment number 64.

    Gee, thanks Paul!

  • Comment number 65.

#62 Thanks Deebee, I missed that as our neighbour pooped round. Will have to listen to iplayer as the only message I sent in was a reply to a fb request from the show. Did it involve teeth by any chance?

  • Comment number 66.

    Hi guys,

Well done on the ARF opener Simon and warmest welcomes. Hope you continue to poop by and join in the banter.

Well done on the mensh MCW - I didn't hear much of the show tonight - I'm so looking forward to the boys being back at school, I'll hear more of the show once we're back in the school groove - and that is the only reason really - I love having them at home in the hols.

    Weasant Pleekend, Everyone.

Ps, Anyone heard from Malcolm Powder - I thought he promised us a travel blog? I don't think it'll be too long before he's back again.

    Toodle-oo for noo

from a fine blogger to a whole bunch of fine bloggers

  • Comment number 67.

Deebee, I like how you ditched the pesky 'y' from the days of the week, or should that be das of the week - how do you think it would look if we drooped 'y' from the alphabet altogether? Oh no, we can't I'd hate to be plain old GailB, GailyB sounds a bit more fun, don't you think?

    Au revoir mes amis.

#68 You missed out bloggle off.

And the knickers are not shunned - just I don't always necessarily have the appropriate pair with me (witty, loony, etc....)

  • Comment number 70.

Is there a collective noun for bloggers?

  • Comment number 71.

#69. So much for my artistry in identity adumbration.

    How very dare I? ;0)

  • Comment number 72.

    #70 I suggest a colletcive of bloggers.

  • Comment number 73.

#70 I thought it was a fine bunch of bloggers. That's what Simon called us, anyway.

  • Comment number 74.

    Or a poppetry!

  • Comment number 75.

    #72 Good idea,

  • Comment number 76.

#73 That is a wonderful description and very apt

  • Comment number 77.

#76 I was actually quite touched. It's nice to get some recognition from the main man - good to know he cares!

  • Comment number 78.

#77 Know what you mean, the first blog after the hols mentioned the number of posts and I felt the same

  • Comment number 79.

Why oh why do I still get that rush of excitement at 5.05?

I even had to dash back to my car, leaving a client with the feeble excuse that I was expecting an important call!!

In fact, I was relieved when I heard once again that it wasn't my ARF.

Seriously, if and its a very big IF, it were ever chosen, I dont think I could cope!

I am content with pooping along every friday to post the same old same old.

Its what I do and it pleases me.

  • Comment number 80.

I'm also finding HFW quite pleasing to the eye tonight.

    Off to count my empties!

  • Comment number 81.

MTF, I don't think I would cope if he played Twilight either!! I think the whole blog may possibly go into meltdown!

I was watching HFW last night trying to get the good people of Devon to eat tripe. Even with all the lovely ingredients he added to it, I don't think I could have risen to the challenge. I take it that you were looking at him through a glass of scrumpy or two?? ;-)

    Mcw x

  • Comment number 82.

I've counted Mcw, and its 3!!

I felt your pain today, ie the mensh.

I had to cancel my dental appt.

    Prolonging the agony!

I am just praying now for a trouble free B/H, yikes.

  • Comment number 83.

I nearly did that with my dental problem. Have had a problem tooth for about a week now, talk about a 'bear with a sore head'. I decided that I couldn't go on over the weekend with it, especially as we are going up to the Lake District on Tuesday for a few days. My dentist saw me within the hour and one medicated filling later,(and possibly a few glasses of pinot grigio later have helped!) I'm not quite so grouchy! So make sure you get yours sorted, I'd much rather go to the dentist anyday than suffer in silence. I think that they are far less scary than when I used to go as a child and they gave you a filling as a matter of course.

    Mcw x

  • Comment number 84.

For Deebee for the 50th post ... better late than never

    ....................◒ . ◒...............
    .................... ╰╯ ................

  • Comment number 85.

Mcw, as a former dental phobic..

I had to put off the appt, because I had a tiny crack in the corner of my mouth, which will not heal and will be frowned upon by the dentist.

Re booked for the 10th of the next month.

I think going to the dentist about 12 times a day has helped with my phobia.

  • Comment number 86.

I'm writing this late at night and I'm writing it in a very small voice because I'm new and I WANT to get involved but I don't want to intrude.
You - bloggers - might not want to hear this - but you're a bit like a club for the big boys in Glee - you welcome new members and then you throw frozen fruties in their face - POS - and then you say no more about it and then you carry on regardless - all your acronyms (?)and
"in jokes" with all your esotericness.(Is there such a word?) Someone will tell me. I would like to say some lovely things about this blog. I really enjoy and would like to comment on the "late at night" blogs. Trulley, truley (can't spwll) I'm enjoying it.

Come on. Some big shot. Give me the OK.

  • Comment number 87.

Billy, we would love you to get involved in this friendly madness that is the blog. Sometimes the banter goes way above my head, but you just have to ask outright if you don't understand what someone is rambling on about. Yes, I agree that POS must live in some parallel universe with some of his surreal comments, but that is part of his charm!! (hope he is not reading this??!!)

So welcome Billy, hope you continue to enjoy the blog, I have got to know some really fabulous people here.

Now, unfortunately, I must take my leave as I'm up early tomorrow.

Mcw x (madchickenwoman that was until Katy came up with madchickster!)

  • Comment number 88.

    PS frozen fruties?

  • Comment number 89.

  • Comment number 90.

PPS Don't worry about bad spelling Billy, we are all guilty of it, and most of them seem to find their way into the bloggers dictionary, or Dicker as Paul has fondly called it.

  • Comment number 91.

    Hi Billy
The main thing to know about this blog is that we all found it because we enjoy Simon and his show. In fact we enjoy his show so much that we kept chatting for the three weeks he was away! Like you I started with the odd song suggestion and then added a little more. But some days I just suggest a song again. If you click on my name you'll see a history of my comments, and that I have a bit more time on my hands at this time of year due to the school summer holidays. The thing is we all dip in and out of it in-between doing the other things in our lives. As Madchickster said, alot of it goes over my head, and alot of it touches my funny bone, and some of it touches my heart. So come have a play with us. It's fun.

  • Comment number 92.

    3 points

Point One: Come on in, the water's lovely.

    Point Two: Resistance Is Futile.

Point Three. There is no third point, I lied about it. Perhaps I thought it would 'big me up' in some way, a self seeking engrandisement of my own opinions, to pretend that I had more points to make than I am actually capable of formulating simutaneously. Or, more pertinantly, perhaps it is just that I like the sound of my own blog 'voice' as it were, and cannot help but ramble on well beyond the point at which anyone wants to listen or read. Maybe, it is none of these things. It could be that there IS a third point, and one that is so beautifully formed, that if I were to make it here, no-one would believe that I was capable of such beauty, and in posting it, I would run the risk of being driven from this blog to the cries of 'Plagiarist plagiarist, get thee gone, and return no more'. So, no third point to be given then, for some reason. Or another.

Anyway, Billy Pepper, (Male or female, I wonder, the name being so close to Billy Piper, the one time squeeze of our neighbours leader),the actual thing is this. Pull up a chair, me owd, and make yourself comfortable. Everyone is welcome here. Let's be honest, they keep letting me back in, so that must be a sign of a very welcoming and friendly colletcive. Either that, or these people have very low standards!

  • Comment number 93.

Well said Alison and Madchickster. Billy, I'm sorry if we seem a bit cliquey sometimes - that's not the intention. It's just that some of us have been around since Simon started on Drivetime (or just after in my case) so we've got to know each other over the months. You'll find the more you post, the more involved you'll feel. And don't worry if you don't get a response to a post - you're not being ignored. I made that mistake once 'next door' on CLP's blog.

I'm sitting here on the boat waiting for our friends to arrive, and it's a lovely sunny day here in Ipswich. I'll try to poop by later (from the poop deck...) but if not, hope you all have a great weekend.

  • Comment number 94.

Well said Paul too - I posted my comment before I saw yours.

  • Comment number 95.

Is'ny this a bit close to 100 to have stalled? Someone needs to get out and push!

  • Comment number 96.

Ooh, look! A typo has made me sound Scottish.

  • Comment number 97.

Go on then, I'll help you shove it over the line ... all together now ... push

  • Comment number 98.

I'm only online 'cos I'm waiting for my time from the Eastleigh Parkrun that I did this morning to be published ... normally appears about 2pm

  • Comment number 99.

While I've been here I filled in the register of electors online ... another job jobbed ...

  • Comment number 100.

Who ae you and what have you done with Alison?
