Another Weekend

Simon Mayo | 08:56 UK time, Friday, 26 February 2010

As another weekend beckons us home, a few bits and pieces to attract your attention. First just to say that Bob Harris organised one extraordinary event last night. The Sound and Vision event for Cancer Research at Abbey Road saw performances from Beth Nielsen Chapman, David Gray, Newton Faulkner and then Robert Plant! He sang an old (and very difficult) Scott Walker song, an American Gospel song he learned from The Incredible String Band called I Bid You Goodnight and then an ensemble rendition of My Sweet Lord which was glorious if a tad shambolic! I tweeted some pictures last night however I am, as you might notice, no Annie Leibovitz. (Bob has tweeted pictures too at @whisperingbob)

Today is a double show day with movies on 5Live at 2 and All Request Friday on 2 at 5. But you know all that so leave that ARF opener below and see what we can belt out at 5.05...

My first foray into the world of Mr Simon Mayo...

Sir, please may I say hallo??? I've bin poorly for AGes (pls see CLP blog) so have severly missed the radio, but I've heard you a couple of times, and thoroughly enjoyed Rock and Roll last Friday...me and the Badger were on our way home from a friend's funeral, and that was one of his favourite tracks, so I got all a bit motional, then had a good head bang...so thank you for that!!!

So, my ARF...Tiger Feet - Mud please...

And I have to own up. I totally mis-read your post, and thought it was Bob Harris who sang the Scott Walker song. I'm sure he'd have done it well if it had'a bin him...

see you again another day, and welcome (albeit a bit late) to Drivetime
    love

Beth Neilsen Chapman and John Barrowman on Wogan on Sunday....

  • Comment number 33.

#22 I suspect it's a good thing for the fans in the longer term. I don't see any realistic hope that clubs at our level will find buyers to come in and actually wipe out the debts that are hanging round their neck, and it seems a large chunk of the fan base have been willing the club to fail so they can be rid of the owners and start afresh at a level they can sustain/re-build from. Cambridge Utd fans may need to start clenching buttocks though, they are suddenly much closer to the possibility of regional football!

  • Comment number 34.

#30 we heard you the first time Simon

  • Comment number 35.

#30 Although technically its now the afternoon!

I wonder if my comment on Dr Kermode's blog had anything to do with this the blog finally working?

Haven't listened to 5 Live in the afternoon since Simon's departure. Do they still do a book review? If not, would love to see Simon re-introduce it into his Friday afternoon slot on 5. It was regularly the best talkie radio slot of the week IMO.

  • Comment number 42.

    going to listen in now...

  • Comment number 43.

if you go to 5 live website, you can watch the show live!

So, interviews went well. I did my bestest, answered all the questions they asked of me and hid my FB/blog addictions well! Now just got to wait to see if I get short-listed for 2nd interviews.

Really, really looking forward to the CLP Blog Meet this weekend. As already said by Nic, details are on the CLP bloggers page on Faceache - all welcome - the more, the merrier in my books!

Finger crossed Deevs - if you go to the bbc 5live page now, you can see Simon being streamed live with Mark Kermode...

  • Comment number 55.

#50 I know the guy who commentates on Stevenage games for the local BBC station (I travelled with him and sat with him in the press box for 18 months when I was doing reports on away games for a local rag). He forgets to put his phone on silent so I've often heard my text messages to him arriving live on the commentary :-).

  • Comment number 56.

    Kev,
Thanks for the heads up with 5 Live.
Can I also say what a superb job you did during last night's Mayo serving. You, Sir, are a star.

Good choice SylviaB88. Loved the film.

  • Comment number 60.

    Simon,
Guess what! You have a mention in the Times today!! To quote (P7)
One Size Radio Doesn't Fit All.
'....Still, one good thing - if Radio 2 intends to cut down on its music content, perhaps the peerless Simon Mayo will be able to present his drivetime show without having to punctuate intelligent talk about the affairs of the day with frequently innapropriate pop.'
Guess they're not too keen on the music then!

    Cheers, Hampshire Dave

It's the weekend - weyhey! Anybody around, or are you all at the CLP blogmeet? Our esteemed leader was up and about early for a Saturday, tweeting at about 8 o'clock. Needless to say, I wasn't....

Btw, my name is not really Tom and I don't drive fork lift trucks. I appreciate that first thing on Friday morning I said without a shadow of a doubt it was going to be Your love keeps lifting me Higher and Higher, (Rod Stewart version), that would open the show and the song, (Jackie Wilson) version was used to close the show but this is pure coincidence. The fact that their are millions of songs to chose from, only 16 were chosen and that very song was used to end the show had nothing at all to do with me. I did not ring into the show and make up the most ridiculous award show possible in an attempt to hide my identity.

    So, vegetables next week then.

Love the show, the host, myself, the staff, the other blogpoppets, the mods, the tweeters, the browsers, the callers, the emailers, the face bookers, the ones that don't even know the show exists (shame on you) and the listeners. KERNOW BYS VYKEN

#84 Deebee, the Find a person thing on Twitter still ain't working.

I did however have a funny little conversation with the great comedian Dave Gorman about urine smelling seats in Bournemouth Pavillion last night on Twitter.

Has anybody noticed how little the Blog was used last night compared to during the week? How can we increas the amount of comments posted on a night when essentially the Friday night show is based on telephone calls?

Love the show, the host, myself, the staff, the other blogpoppets, the mods, the tweeters, the browsers, the callers, the emailers, the face bookers, the ones that don't even know the show exists (shame on you) and the listeners. KERNOW BYS VYKEN

  • Comment number 87.

#86 But we know the blog is about so much more than choosing the songs....

Darren, I think the dearth of posts last night may in part have been due to some of the regular bloggers (Spike, the Rev) being busy elsewhere. Very inconsiderate of them to have lives away from here, don't you think?

  • Comment number 88.

Warm Sunday morning greetings to – 634Salan, Alison from Eastleigh, Anthony in Rugby, BabyDriver, Brenda, CherylTheDiva, Deebee9, Emily, Flourishing, Helen May, Jason Issacs, Jeff, KatyMac, Ken Jude, Kev TrickyTree Williams, Kidteeth, MadChickenWoman, MissToeDipper, MobileToothFairy, Music_Geek, NicRolastic, Paul of Sheffield, Payre, PoshSoulLady, PurpleDragon, Rev David Marshall, SparkleSparklyTinsel, SylviaB88, Ticketyboo, Tortie-cat, ,... and somebody who rarely makes a post, Spike!

#87 Of course it is so much more than choosing songs, however, I wonder if there is a blog based activity which can work in tandem with the whole point of ARF which would increase the amount of comments made.

I wonder if on a Friday, the usual Monday to Thursday audience for Drivetime are uncatered for? ARF is essentially a completely different programme. Okay, its still got Mr Mayo but then the film review on 5Live is a completely different show yet it is presented by Simon.

Do we have to accept that the programme we like to refer to as "our" show only operates between Monday to Thursday or is there something we can do on a Friday evening which increases ownership for the Mon-Thurs crowd without ARF changing its format?

(Note to mods, this is merely a discussion about blog involvement not a complaint against the show or about blog management)

    Afternoon all.

Blissful Sunday afternoon listening top last night's Bobness while three-tabling on PokerStars. Oh my, "Ruby" by David Rawlings Machine was gorgeous - another album on to the wish list. Need to win a few more hands.

  • Comment number 90.

#88 - very interesting blog post Darren. Hmm, can't think of much we CAN do, apart from call the show on a Friday as well as blogging! It coudl be that quite a few of us finish work earlier on a Friday and are therefore not around to blog?

Looking forward to going back to work tomorrow after 3 weeks off - not looking forward to the 1 hr 45 min drive in the morning - my back won;t thank me for it, I'm sure!

  • Comment number 91.

#90 I suppose I'm looking at increasing the number of posts which get added to the "Friday" blog, regardless of if they get posted during the actual show or not. I leave home for work prior to 07:30am and rarely get home until the evening, Friday included.
Most of the blogging taked place in the daytime leading up to a Mon-Thurs show anyway rather than during the show - which is when is generally drops off.
I'm usually to busy between 5:05 and 7pm, ahem, to post anything myself.
What about an inhouse game which we could take part in on Friday prior to the show which gets resolved by the end of the show?
The current game is, who can get their name, their song, their tweet, their confession, their homework sucks answers or their guest questions mentioned.
Could either be; song related or; what type of person phones in related or; get a weird sport mentioned; or get Sally traffic invovled in something or get Simon to read a text on what you are doing.
The song related one does not have to simply get your song request played at the start of the show. It could be guess which song genres get played, etc.

Good to see you going back to work TrickyTree you lazy so and so.

Love the show, the host, myself, the staff, the other blogpoppets, the mods, the tweeters, the browsers, the callers, the emailers, the face bookers, the ones that don't even know the show exists (shame on you) and the listeners. KERNOW BYS VYKEN!!!

Good Morning Each. Hope you all had groovy times this past weekend. Interesting blogging by Cornish Darren Im not Simon Mayo or Red Rum or Tom the forklift driver Fewins over the weekend.
Do you recall how the cover of Abbey Road supposedly contained a clue as to the demise of Paul McCartney. Well, I've noticed that in Cornish D's new nom de plume, the word "not", is the only one not capitalised. With this in mind I'd like to suggest "Sweet Potato Pie" by James Taylor to be played at some point in the show. It's probably not an opener.

  • Comment number 93.

Morning Paul. HappyGrooved all weekend thanks - extended birthday. Rugby - disappointing. Football - not so :)
CDF blogappeal - let it flow, chillax, Fri,Sat,Sun - people DO other stuff.

In other news - am really enjoying Richard Allinson on Breakfast show

Morning KatyMac. Actually, football was very disappointing from this perspective, but at least our defeat (DCFC) did no favours for certain others.

(Does this mean the Cornishman is off the hook?) Well, I too will wait for the new blog, where I will resist the temptation to suggest "Free Money" by Patti Smith, as I know it wont be played, as it aint really too Radio 2 friendly. Laters, peeps.
