Media Brief

Post categories:

Torin Douglas Torin Douglas | 10:01 UK time, Friday, 3 September 2010

I'm the BBC's media correspondent and this is my brief selection of what's going on.

BBC director general Mark Thompson has been accused of endangering the BBC's editorial independence by meeting Downing Street officials to discuss coverage of the Government's spending cuts report the Telegraph and Daily Mail. The BBC said he had made it clear its independence was paramount and they were talking to all the major parties about a season of programmes about the Coalition's Spending Review.

The Guardian says the Government is under pressure to set up a judicial inquiry into phone-hacking at the News of the World, after the paper confirmed it had suspended a journalist while it investigated new allegations of illegal activity. The prime minister's media adviser Andy Coulson has denied a report in the New York Times, claiming he freely discussed the use of unlawful techniques.

I discuss the two stories on Radio 4's Today programme.

The Guardian reports BSkyB has signed up the three-millionth subscriber to its high definition (HD) television service. By Christmas, Sky will have more than 50 HD channels.

The BBC newspaper review shows the question of the existence of God makes front page news for a second day. The Archbishop of Canterbury responds to Professor Stephen Hawking's conclusion that modern physics leaves no place for God in the creation of the universe.
