Carry On Carra
Oops. Put the phone down, Wayne Bridge. Apparently John Terry's foot is going to be fine... Anyway, it looks like Fabio's only got three left-backs ahead of you, and every one of them could handle Aaron Lennon better than you could, mate.
Capello's no mug, mind. It looked like he was going to lose one creaking, one-paced and out-of-form centre-back but he's already drafted in an identikit replacement. Lucky old Jamie C.
Fabio takes his job seriously. It seems he's been knocking on doors and pointing his Capello Index Finger in the direction of blokes who have long since turned their backs on an England shirt. Carragher heads the list.
I have to say, this season Jamie's looked like he's done the national team a favour by retiring. Thing about him is - and I'm sure Cap likes this about him - he's mastered the art of stopping the attacker by any means necessary, but without the ref actually spotting it.
For all you younger readers, this is what Carragher loks like in an England shirt
He's potentially as smart and cynical as a Samuel or a Puyol. Oh, and he's versatile, which is exactly why he boo-hoo-sob-sobbed into the wilderness in the first place. Too much playing right-back, my backside.
Capello's 30 nearly included Paul Scholes 'n all. The Ginger Ninja has settled into being the Gandalf of the United midfield this season - not too much running around, plenty of savvy distribution, and still the sudden shark-attack tackling.
But, like an MP whose accounts require some explanation, he wants to spend more time with his family. Not sure I could look the missus and the kids in the eye if I'd turned down a World Cup spot, but each to his own.
Clearly Il Gaffa has gone the extra mile to get what he wants. There was talk of Lazarus Hargreaves making it after 48 seconds of reacquainting himself with grass, but Barry must be better than we feared.
Ledley King goes, now he's played four games in 15 days. Good! (Although what he hasn't said is that he didn't get off the sofa once in between them games). He's going to be our Paul McGrath.
I can tell you now who's not going. Warnock, Parker, Bent, SWP, Upson...
Then there's the thorny issue of Joe Cole, but I don't think the Artful Dodger can be left behind. Which means one of Huddlestone and Carrick minding their respective WAGs for the summer. Me, I'd leave Carrick, although they're both in the gifted-but-fragile category.
Too often they turn from elegant sideboards into driftwood during important games, but Huddlestone's been the better player recently.
So that's leaves one more. I'm biased, me, but young Johnson has to go. He does more than stand on his left peg, he's made a place for himself amongst the Eastlands mercenaries, and he'll scare right-backs silly.
So at the mo I reckon I'm taking 24 if that's all right with Fifa. Twenty-five if you include poster boy Becks, who can spend his time modelling sarongs and mixing with the major 2018 decision-makers. Oh and teaching Lennon and Theo how to look up once in a while and cross a ball properly.
There'll be no Fulham representation, sadly. Wednesday night's defeat was very much in the 'brave failure' category. I feared for 'em, not least 'cos the Boro went on a similar journey a few years back and then Seville made marmalade of us in the final. No such disaster for the Cottagers.
Hodgson has made very, very, very good players out of lads you thought might never quite make it: Simon Davies, Clint Dempsey, Damien Not So Duff, and of course, one of the men of the season, young Bobby. I can vaguely remember a chant going up during his days of utter misfiring that went summat like: "Zamora, Zamora, we love you, Zamora, you're always a goal away."
Not anymore. I've pooh-poohed his England credentials, but frankly he goes up in my estimation having been utterly frank about his fitness for a month in South Africa.
It's a pleasing change from that quartet of disaster that Eriksson took to the last WC. Two crocks (Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen), an unproven tall lad and a very speedy lad getting time off from his paper round.
In the meantime, Diego Maradona (whose surname in Geordie means 'my mate's kebab') has left out the best least noticeable player in this season's Champs League - one Esteban Cambiasso.
What could possibly go wrong?
Seba Veron's in, mind. You remember him? Best 10-yard passer in world football? Proof positive that Fergie makes right old rickets in the transfer market? Looked like an extra from Pirates of the Caribbean? He's going to be there, tippy-tapping it back and forth like a Gooner's nightmare.
The fact that Diego's in charge is all the encouragement the other nations need. Man for man there still won't be a better squad out there - and yet the gaffer's about as predictable as a grizzly bear in a forest.
Of course, somehow I've managed to write this blog despite the fact that our country was ungoverned for half a bleeding week! I dunno, it seems that things are fine when them top bods are locked in rooms for days on end.
Still we have a Clam Government - or is it a Keg?
Good luck to 'em, mind. It's just I can't help thinking that you can't play them both in the same team. They could well be the Lampard and Gerrard of British politics.
I'm Derek Robson. People call me Robbo. Legend has it I was raised in the furnace and smog of Teesside. Some might say I took the hard road. I like to tell folk I had trials for Middlesbrough, for Hartlepool and for burglary (not guilty). I've always loved sport. My job is to say it as I see it - whether it's in the bar of the Blue Bell or on this blog. You won't find me calling a spade a soil-redistribution implement.

I am not sure that this is the right decision for Carra. I am not sure he will actually be involved unless there is an injury crisis and this was the very reason he retired in the first place. I can understand why he would give it a shot with glory with Liverpool looking further away than ever but I have a feeling he may well look a little silly if he doesn't get a single game.

'Oh, and he's versatile, which is exactly why he boo-hoo-sob-sobbed into the wilderness in the first place'
Where to begin with that! He didn't cry at all. He merely pointed out that he was behind other players who were, let's face it, not as good or as consistent as himself. I'm sure King, Upson, Woodgate (!), Brown etc all have their strengths but none of them include winning important matches and remaining fit. Each to their own opinion, of course, but it's pointless hanging around on a bench in some far flung country for no reason when you've got a match to play at the weekend.
What is important, and has been ignored in both Carraghers and Scholes' situation, is that England is nothing like as important to Liverpool and Man United fans or, seemingly, players. Being that Carragher gets abuse for retiring AND coming back, I can't really blame him.
He's come back because he wants to work with Capello. That's the difference between now and his much maligned retirement.

Questionable blog Robbo, you appear to dislike Jamie Carragher, is it because you predicted liverpool to win the title ,and they have let you down? The majority of their players have lacked quality and application this season to really be fighting for top honours. But if you retired from international football, due to lack of chances, would you not take the oppurtunity to go to a world cup if offered a second chance?
Consider the fact he is nearing the end of his illustrious career, he has had a poor season and all who support liverpool know that , but he is still not a bad player and reads the game very well.
Jamie or any other player in his position would jump at the chance to play in the world cup , to actually try and win something.(paul scholes not included, as to be honest , he has enough medals)

I personally wouldn't bother with Carragher. Aside from the fact his best days are behind him, he's stated in his autobiography that he doesn't really care about playing for England so I'd rather have a lesser player who is ready to give 100% honestly. I'm sure the likes of Dawson, King and Upson would sell their left nut to be in the WC squad, whereas Carra just thinks he has half a chance of playing now with Rio semi-crocked.

As for Johnson, I just think he oozes class and I'd take him on a Quasimodo (bit of a hunch)
ANy road, as to your points well of course if someone asks you you're going to go. It's just he absented himself from the process of trying to get there, which kind of whiffs of not opportunity but opportunism. Still, Capello recognises a solid defender when he sees one. Funny you should say that. I think I am right in saying that in Holland, for example, they don't allocated positions to kids until much later than we do in this country. That way they learn how to play football general first before learning/being restricted to a position to early.
Helps them with their Total Football as well.

72 - hmmm interesting, i dot see how it would work though as usually from a young age every single kid wants to be a striker (apart from the loner who says he wants to be goalie as no one else does and it means he'll get picked). Guess you need a firm coach to marshal the kids so that they arent all chasing after the same ball.

Carra bashers - i think before this season he was one of the most committed and effective defenders in Europe, and has admittedly struggled this year. As have Rio, Gerrard, JT, two of the keepers and the first choice right-back, Johnson. So it isn't a poor selection. Having said that, the book does complicate things a bit, unless you know that most sports biogs are full of rubbish designed to get published in big papers to help sales. Rod - i reckon Neville should have made the squad. Can play in midfield, as a holding player, or full back. H2 - just saying he's probably the next best rightback, maybe better than a Neville if you're that way inclined.

It is thought that in this country, kids are allocated positions too early. They are then encouraged to focus on that position. This means that a left back builds up his left foot at the expense of his right foot. Also, it means that someone is earmarked for a position which might not naturally be their best position.
I suppose one way of looking at it is that if everybody was coached to be a midfielder, i.e. how to use the ball forward, back, left, right, how to tackle and how to shoot until, say, the age of 11 at least, then specialising in any position would only be one move away from midfield.
Make sense?

MBB - True that focusing one one positiont o ealry is not the best. The analogy you have of the midfielder is a good one, what im struglling with is the practicalities of playing a game when no one is given a position, maybe giving a position out is okay, as long as you rotate those positions around, so you play a bit of def/mid/atk in each game. Before shoe horning someone into position, they do need to ahve experienced all types of play, whihc is getting harder as there are 'more positions' than there used to be - holding mid, playmaker, enforcer, winger, wide, all diff types of midfielders that were never really classified as much.

Your comment about how Johnson can cross a ball better than Lennon is unfair, and frankly quite ignorant. I'm still wondering why SWP, Walcott and Johnson were all included and Ashley Young wasn't. For me, he's a better player and has had a far more consistent season, whereas SWP and Walcott have hardly even figured much for their clubs. Young also has greater versatility, being able to play on both wings. Still, what do I know?
As far as defenders are concerned, is Jagielka still injured/not fit? He was very impressive up to his injury.
Comment from Baggiemike - exactly. The great Dutch 'total football' team proved that players can be taught to perform well in many different positions (which I'm sure was popular with their wives and girlfriends, too). It always amazes me how so many professional footballers are incapable of doing anything other than use their 'wrong' foot for running with. Some can barely even control the ball with it, never mind actually pass and shoot. Instead of spending so much time on the golf course/in the bookies/on the couch, get a ball and kick it against a wall with the wrong foot for about 3 weeks. Phil Mickelson proved that, with practice, anything can be achieved.

I rather enjoyed playing goalie in my youth. You could dive about getting all mucky and you could knee people in the face when you were going to catch the ball.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that one except it wasn't as much dropping the ball rather slamming it in the players face through a circular motion. I'm not a monster, its just part of the game. The wee b a s t a r d deserved it probably....

Agree with you on one thing Robbo, I'm a United fan but I'd drop Carrick like a hot potato! He is too slow on the ball. The amount of times he gave it away against Barca in last years final was unbelievable. I still believe hes a sweet passer of the ball its just that it takes him about 3 or 4 seconds to ready himself. Sell Carrick and buy Rodwell or buy Hargreaves new legs.

CousinKev - Scholes doesn't do politics (belying my previous comment) if the manager hasn't the nouse to realise Scholes is the best midfield player England has and insists on playing him on the wing where he is at his least effective, he'll walk. He's got a higher profile job in Manchester with a better manager in any case. He's noone's water carrier, least of all Lampard's.

That may well end up happening, but cole plays left wing because it's good to get him in the team somehow and we don't have any other left wingers anyway. I think Ashley Young's been given his chance on the left wing though, maybe he didn't impress.
The 30 man squad seems a bit unbalanced to me anyway, 3 proper left backs to 1 proper right back, 4 proper right wingers to 0 proper left wingers.

Personally I'd have had him in in front of SWP. I like SWP and he's dangerously unpredictable when he's running with the ball and has the occasional rocket of a shot, but he's been around the england set up long enough for everyone to know he's behind Lennon and Walcott in the pecking order, and I believe he's behind Adam Johnson at City as well?
Johnson is the only left footed out and out winger we've had for so long that even Emile Heskey has played multiple games on the left side of midfield for England. He may be untested but he started at City like he's been playing Premier League football all his life so who's to say he wouldn't be fine at International level?
Worth a gamble I'd say.

I keep reading that John Terry has had a poor season, and yet I struggle to see how. He was close to the top of his game until the media scandal, and actually played quite well after except for the Man City and Spurs games. I have watched almost all of Chelsea's games this year and I am pretty realistic about player performances. Terry had a better year this year than last, in my opinion. His off-field issues do leave a bitter taste, but beyond the alledged affair, none of the other claims have been substantiated in any way, so I'll pass no judgements, since I don't see myself as a judge of morals, unlike some others on here. I also do not expect football players to be "role models", any more than, say, a garbage collector. Carragher selection was shocking .. If he makes it in the squad then how did Campbell miss out ? I am sure Campbell is better than Carra and Upson .. Not only in the England squad but we've seen many surprises in most of the big team's squads . Dunga leaving Ronaldinho and Pato out . Ronaldinho omission is not justified as he could've been a great impact player and would've provided Brazil with a Plan B . Domenech aka joke leaving Nasri out . amazing . Ok Benzema didn't play much at Real but surely he's better than Govou or Cisse . Spain's squad on paper is the best but I am not sure whether they can go all the way and win it . I hope its England's year .

Bantam,
Would you have preferred for me to compare footballers with stock brokers, or secretaries, or just about any other profession whose purpose is to do a job. In the case of footballers, their job is to play football, and entertain, making the owners money. There is no implied responsibility to protray some form of hero for kids, and it is for the parents to determine what level of behaviour displayed by the players is suitable for the kids.
By your standards, probably 50% of players in the PL could be considered any form of role model, and based on supposed statistics of married couples in the UK who have had affairs, less than 50% could even come close to "role models". I don't see any of these supposed role models criticizing fans for swearing around kids in the stands. Do you?
And FYI, and I am not a garbage collector (the comparison was arbitrary - a high profile job with a low profile one), nor am I frustrated. I just detest seeing haters coming on here and moralizing about certain players (of opposition teams) when few players can really be held up as paragons of the community, and I certainly don't think anyone on 606 is so pure white innocent that they should be so vehemently decrying others' actions.
Or did you just want to be argumentative because you hate Terry?...

As for players having a responsibility I agree. They get paid millions a year for doing a job most of us do as a pastime and are seen as a pinnacle of success for most youngsters - most children clearly won't reach those heights but that won't stop them copying their habits. And when you hold the England captaincy you have an extra responsibility.

One's opinion on here is most definitely one's own in football related matters. The thing about your post that I objected to was the fatuous statement that you " do not expect football players to be "role models", any more than, say, a garbage collector". This flies in the face of all reason and common sense. Had you used any other non-high-profile job such as solicitor, stock brokers or secretaries, the point remains valid, our children do not watch these other types of workers in their millions, and aspire one day to be one!
They are, and remain, ergo role models, whether you agree with it or not.

Every World Cup they've entered they've at least qualified from the group stages and provided some great World cup moments. The most recent example is the Germany game in 2002, although a dour match (mainly because of the Germans) the finish to it was amazing.

"How many millions of kids..." don't find many of their choices, hopes and dreams in sad need of re-evaluation on a regular basis. If the fact that a footballer is an all-around, second-generation, died-in-the-wool louse ruins a single kid's life, that kid never had a chance anyway.
Anyways, I like the idea of Johnson instead of Gerrard on the left. With Lennon on the right, the defense would be spread as thin as possible in the center. Too bad, as many have pointed out, there's no way England will play a 4-5-1 with Gerrard just off Rooney.

@197,
The disconnect I see here is that the job of a football player is to play football to their best ability, to win games and to make money for the club. The job of any person is to work hard, do their job well, and make money for their company.
To me, role models in society are those who do a job specifically to affect peoples' lives in a positive way, such as emergency personnel (police, fire, doctors, etc.). The kinds of jobs that you hope the practicioners of such went into with the idea of helping others and making a real difference (I know, a lot of them probably took the job for money, but there's humans for you). What football players become are idols, which is not the same as role models, and not necessarily (or even very often) a good thing.
I do, however, understand your contention. I can see that putting anyone in the public eye for any reason (politics, show biz, sports, etc.) can make that person subject to the whole "role model" thing. I just don't consider such individuals the best examples to use for such a purpose.

Everton at home or away? At home was the wierdest game ever. Chelsea managed to self-destruct while actually having the better of the game, typified by Drogba's header against the head of the Everton player (don't remember who) which cost the 3rd goal. At Everton, I think Everton played extremely well and unsettled the entire Chelsea team. It was not one particular player but all 11.

Okay Robbo, let me say it for you as you have now failed to mention it in 2 blogs.
Whitley Bay won the FA Vase again. An achievment made even more remarkable by the manner in which they annihilated Wroxham FC 6-1 and broke a record in doing so. Paul Chow, striker extraordinaire, scored the opening goal on 20 seconds. The fastest Wembley goal of all time.
They also scored a quite outstanding goal, that being the sixth, which any fan of football would acknowledge of being of the highest possible quality.
I don't see how this blog can only mention an aging footballer who distanced himself from his country.
I don't see how this blog can do so when the tournament for which he may not even have a part to play is a full month away.
I don't see how this blog can give space to a Championship winning team who win a league by a single point without mentioning a double, back to back, winning FA Vase win. Chelsea deserve their plaudits - but why are we only talking about the elite of the game?
I don't see how this blog can mention Fulham and their superb run in Europe without mentioning Whitley Bay winning a noted FA trophy in successive years; which after all, is a win, not a loss (unlike Fulham whom I thought were roundly outplayed throughout the game last night).
In short, stop the elitism.
Football is about much more than the big boys. It is about fans and clubs the length and breadth of this country. If you can talk about Boro you can talk about Bay. We have more silverware than them for a start.

Carragher's only skill as a defender is to foul without giving free kicks /penalties away. This is probably a LOT to due with the fact he wears a Liverpool shirt.
Whether FIFA will be instructed to continue this favourable treatment into International competition, where he is not representing the 'sponsored' club, remains to be seen??
Conclusion - Carragher can play for England but he has to wear his Liverpool shirt. In fact, why not dress the whole team up in Liverpool shirts? It might disgust the true England fan, but they'd have a chance of winning; either by referee assistance, or FIFA changing the rules somehow at the last moment.

Then we have King and Dawson who were made to look fools by my team last weekend - and I think Burnley's strikers are Brad Pitt!
So Don Capello's plans are unveiled, build up the nation's hopes of another gold star on the shirt, then pick a cack final 23 to allow Italy to win the WC. Again.

Obviously this post is tangental to the original topic of the blog, so I'll briefly state my opinion. I largely agree with Robbo's selection of players that will miss out on the final 23; except that I expect Carrick would be given the nod ahead of Huddlestone due to his superior experience in the England first team. I still agree with Robbo though - I'd personally prefer tHuddinator to get in. Think Milner could be a revelation on the world stage this summer if he gets good pitch time - hope so anyway, he's really flourished this season.

The media made too much of the Terry/Bridge affair in my opinion, and Bridge shouldn't have cowered out of going to the World Cup.
That said, Bridge is no where near Ashley in terms of ability

he is going to play with 3 central defenders.
Cant remember how it turned out the last time someone experimented with it.
Are any of england's best even capable to play in a 3-5-2 ?
Still, no better time to start an experiment than a World-bluddy-cup I say.

I would love to see Paul Scholes play for England again at the world cup as he has proved this season that he has a few more years in him. Too be honest his passing is amazing and thats what England need if they want to to go anywhere in the World cup. Lampard and Gerrard are good but add Scholes in there then that would allow them to roam alot more. I am Scottish and i wanna see England do well but not win it obviously. If they managed to persuade Scholes then i think they would be a better team

Terry Venables did well with it in Euro 96. Give our lackof decent full-backs it may nnot be bad idea. But in all fairness if Barry isn't fit then isn't that what Huddlestone and Carrick are in the squad for. And Hargo has a phone number to call if push comes to shove - 4-4-2 best way forward

Capello's 3-5-2:
GK - Green, James, Hart
CB - Terry, Ferdinand, King, Upson, Carragher, Dawson
LWB - Cole, Baines
RWB - Johnson, Milner

CF - Rooney, Heskey, Crouch, Defoe
Out: Warnock, Barry, Johnson, Wright-Phillips, Lennon, Walcott, Bent

I am sure Carragher deerves his place based upon his experience but he can only act as a backup for the backups. There is Rio and Terry as the first choice and as backups for them, there is King and Dawson and Carragher is the backup for them. Carragher;s selection can be understood but he is old now and without any good support from his other centre back, it would be difficult for england to cope up with the pace of Dempsey and Donovan in the first round and going further, it will get more and more difficult only in world cup.

Hi Robbo, been reading your blog for a long time, but never been wound up enough to register to comment... until now.
Of all pundits I would have thought that a northern bloke like yourself would have been in the Carra camp, with his 100% commitment, non-pre-madonna, non-WAG attached and NEVER INJURED approach he has; but evidently I'm wrong.
Contradiction???
In one sentence you mention that Carra being in the squad is a mistake, but on the other hand (albeit re: Scholes) you say that you wouldn't be able to look your kids in the eye if you turned down the chance to play in the world cup!!
I agree that when Capello phoned up Carra probably thought, not gonna win anything with LFC in the next couple of years before I retire so may as well give it a punt (and who could blame him), but when you look at the other options:
John Terry (don't like his attitude to life, but a definite starter)
Rio Ferdinand - Should be put through his paces in training, hard, in my opinion to prove his fitness as he's only just ahead of Hargreaves in minutes on pitch!!
Matthew Upson - donkey, who is prone to mistakes and been playing for a team that only just avoided relegation (don't get me started on Rob Green!!)
Michael Dawson - The most in form, of those fully fit, central defender in the league for me. But...On a massive stage like the World Cup??? He has to play both friendlies to form an opinion.
Ledley King - Class, but Glass, nuff said.
So all that said, I don't think Jamie Carragher is a bad bet over Rio & Ledley the crocks, untested Dawson, and donkey Upson.
Thanks for the chance to rant!!!

I have to disagree with many on here who are slating JC, as a non interest in Premier league players being a Hull City supporter, I have to say I thought JC has had a good season in an average team playing badly. He is not fast (never has been), he is clever though and like you say Robbo, can stop a forward by all means required without the ref seeing it....reminds me of a certain John Terry.
Would prefer JC at Right back though, think Johnson is rubbish defending and we will need to defend.
England should reach the semi final, from there it is a lottery as to how well we do...a final place would be good, as long as it is not against Spain who will no doubt pummel us.

people forget that shearer quit england when needed at 2002 WC and alex ferguson encouraged scholes to internationally retire. carragher is back cos capello doesnt like richards, konchesky, neville at right back. he doesnt want robinson, young, cahill, downing, agbonlahor plus others, and he has favourites j.cole, heskey etc. - it isnt down to form & fitness. I think scholes was meant to sort out the midfield crises, now that the barry injury is making capello ponder an untested 3-5-2 formation that doesnt look good. Although i trust the manager to do well semi finals is possible but formation changes and injuries are a worry.

Frank Feldman
A man walks out to the street and catches a taxi just going by. He gets into the taxi, and the cabbie says, "Perfect timing. You're just like Frank."
Passenger: "Who?"
Cabbie: "Frank Feldman. He's a guy who did everything right all the time. Like my coming along when you needed a cab, things happen like that to Frank Feldman every single time."
Passenger: "There are always a few clouds over everybody."
Cabbie: "Not Frank Feldman. He was a terrific athlete. He could have won the Grand Slam at tennis. He could golf with the pros. He sang like an opera baritone and danced like a Broadway star and you should have heard him play the piano. He was an amazing guy."
Passenger: "Sounds like he was something really special."
Cabbie: "There's more. He had a memory like a computer. He remembered everybody's birthday. He knew all about wine, which foods to order and which fork to eat them with. He could fix anything. Not like me. I change a fuse, and the whole street blacks out. But Frank Feldman, he could do everything right."
Passenger: "Wow. Some guy then."
Cabbie: "He always knew the quickest way to go in traffic and avoid traffic jams. Not like me, I always seem to get stuck in them. But Frank, he never made a mistake, and he really knew how to treat a woman and make her feel good. He would never answer her back even if she was in the wrong; and his clothing was always immaculate, shoes highly polished too. He was the perfect man! The guy never made a mistake. No one could ever measure up to Frank Feldman."
Passenger: "An amazing fellow. How did you meet him?"
Cabbie: "Well, I never actually met Frank. He died. I'm married to his f...ing widow."

Man United have signed a new striker from Nigeria.
On his first day of training, Fergie picked up the ball and said "BALL" then pointed at the goal and said "Goal." Then he demonstrated a kicking motion and said "Kick, understand, Kick ball, goal, GOOOOOAAAALLL!"
Eventually the young African plucks up the courage to say "Excuse me Mr Ferguson but I speak very good English", to which Fergie replies "Sit down son, I'm talking to Berbatov."

Can you answer me this please Robbo -
What have you won as a football manager ?
That's right NOTHING !
When you are as successful as Fabio Capello you can start questioning his decisions. He has asked Jamie to return to the fold on numerous occasions during his time in charge for a reason HE KNOWS WHAT HE IS DOING !
Yes his best playing days are behind him (2005 Champions League final) but the experience he will bring to the squad is invaluable (just like Cannavaro did at the last WC remember how that ended)
He did not go crying off from the international team because he was played at right/left back he quit because quite rightly he should have been in the team ahead of JT in his best position and that was not happening. Maldini (probably the best defender of all time) said the Jamie was one of the best defenders he had ever seen and that was before the 2005 final. Now to be honest with you I would rather take the opinions of (in my opinion) the best defender ever and one of the best managers ever than yours.

Carragher is a much better defender than Johnson, his defending is definetly still questionable, but johnson is great going forward.
But carragher has had a poor season, has looked poor and im sure capello has noticed that. I can only see him being used as cover, he must know that as he cant be expected to slot in ahead of whats already established, never mind ledley king who has outperformed him for the whole season.
I think he knows his days of winning silverware are numbered, liverpool have gone backwards so England is his best chance.
