Down Among Dowie And The Dead Men

Post categories:

Robbo Robson | 11:38 UK time, Tuesday, 27 April 2010

It's been a thoroughly enjoyable season, with plenty still to keep us interested. The fact that the quality, even amongst the top two, has been pretty variable, has only helped keep the Premier League pot boiling.

Sadly, Portsmouth have been joined by the two leading candidates for the drop at the start of the season, Hull and Burnley.

Brian Laws has bemoaned Burnley's lack of consistency, but I think losing 16 out of 18 games away from home is bloody consistent. The Burnley defence has been so holey it should be made into a site of pilgrimage for Hansens and Lawros everywhere.

But Burnley are the ones who might just bounce back. Barry Kilby has run his ship wisely. The banner proclaiming 'Owen Coyle is God' (which might explain why the Clarets hardly ever play on Sunday) will come back to haunt them.
Burnley bannerBanner from heaven...or not
Personally, I think Owen Coyle is the bit of the England striker's knee that gives way every time it looks like he might be getting back to full fitness.

But there's a sense of reality at Turf Moor, and that includes a highly appreciative bunch of fans, who kept singing to the very end of the 4-0 drubbing by Liverpool. Good on them.

Meanwhile, Hull have begun an internal game of pass the buck. George Boateng's blamed Phil Brown, who's still out on gardening leave. I guess if the flowers have been badly affected by frost in the first half of spring, he'll leave them outside and give them a really good talking to in front of everybody. Mind you, some fans are still lamenting the passing on of the Orange Crooner.

Chairman Adam Pearson has blamed his predecessor, Paul Duffen, who, to be fair, has proved to be a keen student of Ridsdalean Economics. The fans blame Pearson for bringing in Mr Bouncebackability Iain Dowie, who for all his spring-heeled enthusiasm, couldn't rescue a teaspoon from the bottom of a washing-up bowl.

Dowie's a kind of bushy-tailed, empathetic Grim Reaper, or Death Management Consultant, I suppose. The face fits, any road. If he taps on the door of your football club, be afraid, be very afraid.

Of course, the old cliché has been trotted out by both clubs: "The league table doesn't lie." Fair enough, but it doesn't tell the whole truth either - especially when players get all end-of-season a little early. Certainly, Stoke turned up at Stamford Bridge with trunks on and lilos out.
Tony Pulis apparently suggested the Potters had had their pants pulled down and their bottoms spanked. Lee Dixon said it was worse than that - and whatever that means, Lee, son, I don't want to go there!

But it looked like the refs might be mentally scrolling through the cheap flights to Marbella 'n' all. I've seen less dodgy pens behind a bookie's ear than the one that gave Villa the points against Brum.

You might expect Birmingham to have taken the foot off the pedal by now, but that big, angry troll Alex McLeish was stomping and cursing up and down the touchline like the match officials were the three billy goats gruff trap-trap-trapping across his bridge.

Pundits tell you, if you go to ground in the box you've got to get the tackle right. Unless of course the ref's half a mile off and trying to keep up with the fleet-footed anagram Agbonlahor, in which case just let the bloke have a shot. (Given Gaby's indifferent finishing it's not a bad call every time.)

It's one of them decisions where a quick video replay would've told the ref all he needed to know. And it would have taken just as long as it took Martin Atkinson to calm down the screaming banshees in Birmingham shirts.

Everton's last-ditch penalty was nowt at all, just Tim Cahill dropping like a toppled wardrobe and Lee Mason buying it.

I wasn't too convinced by the Chelsea penalty either. But having said all that, I was almost praying for the ref to make a horrendous blunder during the Arsenal-Man City snooze-athon on Sunday evening.

Are City really going to stick with Mancini next season? 'Cos by hell they're not going to be England's most expansive team are they? He's got the budget of Croesus and the mindset of Mick McCarthy. He's so conservative, he makes Rafa Benitez look like he's in Hair the Musical.
adebayorpigtails595.jpgAnyone seen Boss Hogg?
Even Emmanuel Adebayor's arrival didn't spark much excitement beyond the predictable chorus of boos, although whether that was 'cos of his provocative goal celebration at Eastlands last year, or the fact that he modelled his hairstyle on a pig-tailed Daisy Duke is another matter.

The race for fourth is tighter than my father-in-law's wallet but, if only for the team's more adventurous spirit, I'd prefer Spurs to bag fourth. Plus I tipped 'em, to almost universal derision, to bag the last Champs League spot at the start of the season.
And I'm still backing Chelsea for the first spot.

You're a Koppite. It's Liverpool 0 Chelsea 0. And with the last hoof of the game Steven Gerrard sweeps a right-foot belter into the bottom corner from 35 yards. Who's jumping up and down, eh? Somewhere down the East Lancs Road the love for Gerrard (something that up until this point was a love that dare not speak its name) comes flowing.

In the Scouser's honour, United erect a statue of Stevie G outside OT, Sir Alex offers to take David Ngog, Emiliano Insua and Lucas Leiva off Liverpool's hands and Gary Neville records a touching version of 'I Will Always Love You'.

United skip along to the Stadium of Light and goals from Zimmer and Bus-Pass (you know who I mean) leave them a point clear with only Pulis's premature holidaymakers to come.

I'm smiling but it's not going to happen, is it?
Is it?

After doing the decent thing at Oldham, Dowie turned to the dark side and now has established a hell of a track record in engineering disaffectation. Hes a hired gun who invariably leaves in a shoot out.

Palace : his only success but then sued by Simon Jordan “The case was heard in the London High Court in the summer of 2007, and on 14 June The Hon. Mr Justice Tugendhat ruled that Dowie had lied when negotiating his way out of his contract.” Mod that.

Charlton : helped scupper them. Left after 15.

Coventry ; fell out with the board

QPR : sacked after 15 games

My nan could do a better job. She's a disciplinarian, or was before she started to forget things. At least she can hide her own easter eggs now.

Mind you, a couple of recent results going more favourably would have seen us with a good chance of getting 3rd off Arsenal, so either way it wasn't a bad call.

Having said that, a couple of recent results going more normally would have left us only 1 point above Everton in 8th. And speaking of Everton, there's a team that could have done with some 'emergency' loan signings. To be within 2 wins of the race for fourth after their start to the season is impressive, but it'll probably be a lot harder to get 4th spot for a good few seasons.

Also not too sure what the criticism of Mancini relates to. He hasnt actually spent that much, its more an inherited squad and he has had his fair share of injury problems. You could say the jury is still out on him but at least give the guy a chance to spend some of the bottomless pit and give him until around Christmas. He could still even make the CL. Journalists and what ever the Robbos of the world describe themselves as seem to have taken a dislike to him on the back of the percieved unjustified sacking of Hughes. I think he has done ok and deserves a bit more time whether they end up in the CL or not. The likes of Dowie and Laws on the other hand..... Why appoint proven failure?

I think Hull and Portsmouth will have to sell anyone with any value or anyone on large wages. I'd be surprised if the Hull players take the 40% wage reduction they'll be asked to take. Especially bullard as he only went there for the money anyway. And Portsmouth will just be left with a shell you would expect, inexperienced players who have not played together before. Its all in the team they select. I can see Rafa pretty much playing the youth team as a parting shot to the premiership and United. And claiming their entire first team was unfit after the Europa Cup tie.

I thought Bullard actually played quite well for HUll when he started and galvanised people around him. Yes he does need a haircut (Jacks see to it if you can please) and is overpaid a little but he is a good player. Hull's problem was bringing in Dowie as you would have bene better off bringing in someone like terry venables to work alongsied Brown the way Boro did with Robson and they stayed up that season.

PB was well suited to Hull and it is interesting that they are thinking of recalling him from gardening leave for next season

Yes but according to Robbos last blog these coach journeys are really nt that bad and any pro worth his salt should be well able for them.

I wouldnt agree the Wolves side was akin to throwing a game. They were up against Man Utd who are a better team than Everton while Wolves themselves are not as good Fulham.

Fulham didnt throw the game either, but the same principal should surely apply. Theres nothing to say to say the wouldnt have got at least a draw if they had played a full strength side.

Now personally I dont think what McCarthy did was the crime ts made out. It was just tactical management and a gamble. Hodgson did the same thing. I have sympathy for Hodgsons situation but he broke the same rule McCarthy did. Robbo did a full blog criticising McCarthy whilst he justifies Hodgson committing the same offence. This seems to lack consistency to me, especially after downplaying the effects of the long travel journey only a few days ago.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Actually no. Its a reasonable question. If Hodgson had done this in a game that impacted the title challenge or the race for fourth there would be far more of an outcry. I thinks hes entitled to focus on the Europa League and give his players a rest but if thats the case the same liberty should be extended to McCarthy.

Any reasonable football fan knew Wolves had very little chance of getting a result at Old Trafford but because it was against Man Utd a huge fuss was made. They lost 3-0 and were likely to lose anyway. Hodgson lost aswell and if anything the indications were a fuller Fulham team might have snatched something.

Whether you agree or not with the rule - there should be a level of consistency applied. To attack McCarthy and then justify Hodgson is completely unreasonable.

A big difference in mindset and approach. One was due to fatigue the other was akin to throwing the game almost.

Get your facts right. We'd gone to White Hart Lane 3 days beforehand, scored in the 2nd minute and hung on for the next 90 minutes. Our players were walking wounded. 3 days later we went to Old Trafford, the funny thing is that the majority of our 'reserves' are now part of the team with one defeat from the last 8 games.

So by your logic Robbo, it's ok aslong as the weakened team wins or comes close?

Its ok for United or Chelski to field a youth side in the FA cup if they're playing some non-league side but its not ok for Wolves or Fulham to field a weakened side in a match of comparable little consequence. I think it just shows how overly righteous and hypocritical the FA is.

with respect BO, the four mentioned i think only fielded weaker sides in the domestic cup comps and all I think fielded thier strongest line ups when it came to league matches afterall each was hoping to win as such you would feild your best 11 irepective of the opposition in order to win the Title.

There was i think a blog about the significance of McCarthy choosing to field a weaker team in a League match, he was not resting players from Cup ties etc indeed just how crucial his selection was has now come to bare. we will of course never know wether he gifted the three now very crucial points to Ioweu.

As for Hodgson, hes going for a trophy has nothing to play for in the PL anymore at this stage of what is now the closeing stages I think he's justified weras i do not think Mccarthy was. I can see him pulling the same stunts next year as well.

speaking of dangerous tackles, its not fair to lable teams lower down the order as the main culprits kalou should have seen red, yet again a blunder of huge proportions by a top official, who had a very poor game and was yet again to be observed being intimidated by the occasion and reluctance to administer the rules for fear of his decision making and affects on the outcome.

not for the 1st time have we seen such a woefull interpretion and application of the rules.

If you want logic, the rule should be eliminated. No other body should have any say in who a manager plays. Period.

In otherwords its Fairy land Disney stuff.
Scenario two, Chelsea win their last two games, United get second, Liverpool finish 7th in the league and have no money as a result for new players, next season they finish 14th, relegated the following season, when United do another Treble and Alex ferguson retires with Benetez still claiming his team where the better team. Ferguson retires and becomes a TV pundit where most people realise he is actually a big softie, Chelsea become premier league and champions league winners the following season with Notts County winning the FA Cup and Arsenal winning the Carling cup.

Do you honestly think this wouldnt be a major issue if Hodgson had pulled this against Chelsea, Man Utd, Spurs or Man City?

Everyone is assuming that Wolves just gave up on a gaem - does anyone really know what different "mindsets" were going on in each team. Wolves had some fixture congestion at the time aswell so you can apply the tired legs logic there equally. The manager is best placed to judge so it should be his call to make.

Like it or not Hodgson did the same thing as McCarthy so I cant see how you can totally justify one and then criticise the other. At the very least Hodgson could have cleared it or alerted the FA in advance and recieved a go ahead.

You can argue about various mentalitys but Hodgson fielded a weakened team because it was a game in which the team had relatively little to play for - I doubt his players would have been too tired to play that game if it was an FA cup semi final. This strikes me as every bit as bad as what McCarhy did (which was more of a tactical ploy than anything else).

For Robbo to suggest its fine in one case but not another doesnt make much sense to me. Either way the rule should be the same for everyone or else not there at all.

Glad you propositioned me on that Bo. Ahem!!

Arsenal are a glorified 5-a-side team who at best look predictable and at worst look arrogant. Wenger is quite possibly the most overrated manager of all time, right up there with Kenny Dalglish, Alf Ramsey and Brian Epstein.

Chelsea are a curious bunch as on paper they are by far the best team in England but their over-expansive egos let them down time and time again. The best side I have ever seen was probably Mourinho's first year with Chelsea but ever since they've declined purely because of the egos in the dressing room. Can't wait to see most of them get free transferred to an old persons home and get replaced by....um....

Sorry, was on the phone there for 20 minutes. My point about Arsenal is that all they do generally is play one-twos in a triangle-like formation very much like indoor football. Basically if a team holds back and players hold their position Arsenal are out of ideas and cannot create any chances. Wenger is a tube because he refuses to accept that this way is 1-dimensional and in effect predictable. Fact init?

Good luck to them both. They should know better than anyone if their players are too tired or not. Anyway, if Mccarthy had played his first 11 against United and lost (which was the most likely outcome) and then those same players had lost to Burnley 4 days later bacause they wern't fresh, Wolves would not yet be safe. So job done McCarthy. He took a decision in Wolves best interests - which is what he is paid for- and he has been fully vindicated. END OF STORY. Ferguson, Wenger et al would do the same if the need arose.

1.John Barnes - took over a Tranmere team that was just short of the play offs the previous year and dragged them into the relegation zone. Past achievements include an embarrassing failure at Celtic which included them paying a record fee for a Brazilian (Rafael Scheidt) who was actually part of a Brazilian scam and losing to Inverness and Caledonian Thistle (A scottish League team).

    2. Steve Staunton - took over Darlington and had virtually gauranteed their relegation from League football by Christmas. Past acheivements include failure with ROI and being a coach at Paul Mersons Walsall.

Just keeping it real Tom. You shouldn't get so uptight, chill, relax. Take a sedative. When I said it shows how far United have come in the past 20 years I'm talking about how everyone went from liking them to hating them you silly sausage due to what can only be described as jealousy.

My comments on Arsenal are my own opinion but I wouldn't expect someone like yourself to understand. Not once have I said Arsenal are crap, what I've said is that they play one way and quite often this season its let them down. If they hadn't scored in the last 10 minutes like they have in what... 20 games this season they would be in a very different position now and Wenger would look like what I beleive to be true, a vastly overrated manager. He would make an excellent accountant though.

I'm all for the use of technology to sort out these decisions but, as a disinterested observer, I'm not as sure as you are about the rights and wrongs of this one.
The BBC report said "Roger Johnson appeared to win the ball in a challenge with Gabriel Agbonlahor".
Now whether Johnson TOUCHED the ball before he clattered Agbonlahor is debatable but the fact that he did not WIN the ball, in my opinion, is not.
    The ball didn't change direction.
From where the referee was, the ball didn't change direction and Johnson took down Agbonlahor.
    Penalty!
As I said, I watched the replay and it looked like a penalty to me but I wasn't 100% certain that Johnson didn't touch the ball before he hit Agbonlahor.
This was a perfect case where technology could have been used.
Johnson requests a review. If he's proved right the decision is reversed, if he's proved wrong, he gets a yellow card for his trouble.

    ------------------

the ball doesn't need to change direction to be won. Roger Johnson plays the ball and then Agbonlahor falls over his leg due to momentum. The ball was won as it was no longer under the Villa players control as Johnson had played it further towards the goalline. Was a great tackle and shoudl have been a goalkick.

As andy Gray said teh way it looked from the ref's position didn't make it a poor decision but it was the wrong one and video replays shoudl be used in decisions like that unless of course (like everything else) it is awarded in United's favour then it is obviously a penno and you just have to live with it.

the ball doesn't need to change direction to be won. Roger Johnson plays the ball and then Agbonlahor falls over his leg due to momentum. Player of the Year: Frank Lampard. I'm not a Chelski supporter (and I'm Scottish) but out of all the great players lauded this season I would have Lampard's name at the top of my team-sheet every game . I think he is the most under-rated player to have graced the EPL. It's time the haters opened their eyes and realised what a behemoth the guy is. A national asset who is comparable with the Lake District or Stonehenge when it comes to English treasures.

    Hamish McAlpine

    So:
    a) He lives in Finland - stick to cross-country skiing mate!

Answer: Drogba, Rooney, Tevez have scored more goals than him. But they are strikers so what did u expect?

He has had a better season than Fabregas because he is still playing with a chance of winning to titles. Cesc's been brilliant this season but couldnt finish the job.

And all of them have had better seasons than Torres. You dont have a great season by lying around on the treatment table do you?

Lampard might not be liked because his dad was rich and he went to a posh school. I dont know, coz never really had any problem with him.
