Robbo's Christmas presents
It's that time of year when we all look forward to a portly man in a white beard showering us with gifts and goodwill. But sadly Ken Bates can only own one football club at a time.
It's the time of year when that red-nosed old dear usually comes into his own - however it looks like Fergie'll struggle this year.
It's the time of year when we think of nuts roasting on an open fire and thank the Lord we're not Tiger Woods.
Christmas is for giving. And as I've spent 2009 not giving a monkey's, it's time I changed my tune.
'Father Christmas' juggles ball at West Ham
To Fabio Capello:
Yards and yards of cotton wool - enough to wrap around Wayne Rooney 'til June.
To Dean Ashton:
He'll be badly missed by all of us who reckoned on him being a cracking international number nine. So I give him a crash course at the Andy Townsend School of Post-Match Punditry...
Day 1 - holding a computer pen.
Day 2 - cliche awareness (obviously at the end of the day it's a tough one to call but this day is all about giving 200% and it could be make-or-break for many - it's a big step-up from Day 1, that's for sure.)
Day 3 - articulating the obvious.
Day 4 - never curbing your enthusiasm.
Day 5 - personal testimonies from Robbie's Earle and Savage...
To Michael Owen:
A summer fishing holiday. That way he might be able to get at least something in the back of the net come July.
To Roberto Mancini:
The new Man City boss will probably need a stab-proof vest, with extra protective layers in the back.
To Mark Hughes:
Well I'm tempted to tell Santa not to bring him anything, given that he won't be expecting the sack.
To Paul Hart:
Some Polyfilla... so he can keep filling those gaps.
To Rafa Benitez:
A new bench. With a few scatter cushions maybe. He's going to need a comfy spot for a long lie-down before very long.
To Everton FC:
A grant to build a new stadium somewhere - and more urgently a grant to turn half the area of the club's training facilities into a new centre for physiotherapy.
To Dean Richards:
A box-set of the TV series 'True Blood'
To Chris Hollins:
Well, a long rest. I know it's called Strictly Come Dancing, but that Ola was a flaming slave driver. On the other hand if you have to pick someone to whip you into shape then hellfire you could do a lot worse.
To Sir Alex Fergsuon:
A visit from the three Wise Men - Messrs Pallister, Stam and Irwin - and their return to the first team pdq. What a horrendous injury list. (Just to reassure you all, that last sentence was not typed with anything approaching a straight face.)
To Arsene Wenger I give:
Wine, wine, wine, wine and more wine.
To Mick McCarthy:
After his team's righteous victory over Burnley, what can I give him? Well I might just remind him how comprehensively Fulham thrashed United, but apart from that I'll reward him by keeping my gob shut.
To Thierry Henry:
Some knitting needles and some wool, anything to keep his hands occupied.
To Diego Maradona:
A dinner for two with that !#?*er Gordon !#@?! Ramsay. What a lovely conversation that'll be.
To Gareth Thomas:
Well a lot of respect - and the hope that certain members of the press aren't going to start digging around for a load of old cobblers about the bloke. I've read various comments by the uninformed that he should've come out earlier or never got married when he knew he was gay but if you think it's that easy then you clearly don't know owt about professional sport. Good on you, son.
To Andy Murray:
Another British man capable of holding the right end of a tennis racquet so he doesn't have to haul Team GB through another hapless David Cup tie.
Scunthorpe fans get in the Christmas spirit
To Jenson Button:
A really dazzling driving outfit so we might still be able to see him in Lewis Hamilton's shadow. Or maybe vice versa.
To Mike Ashley:
Peace on earth. And in Tyneside too. Oh, and a buyer.
To Uefa:
Some Ikea vouchers. What's the betting they'll use 'em to buy a vast quantity of unnecessary tables that take all year to finish and then they'll use what's left over to pay for an almost entirely meaningless Cup.
To David Beckham:
A trip to the local hairdressers. All that money and he still cuts his own hair.
To all the WAGs:
A gag. Hell, we could call it a wag-gag. Anything to keep them out the papers while our lads are in them for the best of reasons in South Africa.
To Ian Bell:
A ruler so he can practise drawing straight lines - and then get his bat in the way if a ball is rolled along it.
To Wayne Rooney:
A first happy Christmas for Colleen and Kai. And a first nappy Christmas for you, lad. It's time you got your hands dirty, Wazza. All right, carrying and fetching and nursing along a helpless little thing is an onerous burden for anyone, but if you can do it for Man United you can do it for Kai.
And a Merry Christmas to dozy bloggers everywhere!!!
I'm Derek Robson. People call me Robbo. Legend has it I was raised in the furnace and smog of Teesside. Some might say I took the hard road. I like to tell folk I had trials for Middlesbrough, for Hartlepool and for burglary (not guilty). I've always loved sport. My job is to say it as I see it - whether it's in the bar of the Blue Bell or on this blog. You won't find me calling a spade a soil-redistribution implement.

I usually find Robbo quite funny actually, so he can stay. The Garth Crooks team of the week is a complete waste of time though.
As for McNulty, I'm afraid that many of his pieces are quite tired and are often incorrect. Also, the fact that he can't open his mind to idea's other than those cliches which are expressed by many of the 'press corps' does make it something of a missed opportunity. (And don't get me started on the moderation!)
I think someone else should have a go with a sort of review of the weekend type blog on Monday's and a preview of the weekend on Thursdays.
The subjects he picks are usually the same old, same old and are too narrow.

Mr Blue Burns,
My point isn't about the rights or wrongs of homosexuality. I am not homophobic in the slightest. I just don't think it is an appropriate arena to be making a stand.
The wonderful thing about sport (especially at a younger age) is that it transcends all boundaries, races, colours and creeds. It's one of the few areas in young people's lives that promotes inclusivity and teaches that we're all the same. Sport achieves these things without actually preaching, teaching or hammering home any points. It does so simply by bringing a group together to have fun. On the sports field the only differentiator is the respective levels of skill of the participants.
At the professional level, I feel there is quite enough politics without adding sexual politics to the chaos.

Thank you Robbo for a wonderful year’s reading.
You haven’t told us what you want. Your lot promoted? If it were in my power…
For Robert Green and for referee Mike Dean, that Robert saved Frank Lampard’s third penalty take last Sunday. Then Mike Dean could have ordered the penalty taken a fourth time because of the half dozen West Ham players who’d charged into the box. I reckon Dean would have taken some pleasure in doing it too, and good on him.

When you get it wrong, Robbo, at least you're consistent that you get nearly all of it wrong.
My pick are...
"To Jenson Button:
A really dazzling driving outfit so we might still be able to see him in Lewis Hamilton's shadow. Or maybe vice versa."
Your preferred little Lewis only won because he had an I-WIN button. Let's see how it goes next season. Button has always been a class driver, but has been forced to drive bad cars since he was mucked over by Williams. First good car he gets, he wins. Coincidence?
Michael Owen. Scores three against the German league winners, but apparently still has to prove himself. (Do you pass the same ridicule to all the other strikers who occasionally miss-hit the ball well wide?) No. And yet, though its a shame that he had to retire, you tout a player who never did anything in Dean Ashton. And would doubtless still take Crouch over Owen... anyway, I'm not going to get back into that one again.
As far as coming out in the national press, why should anyone give a flying Benitez about that? Whether you think it right or wrong to promote something that you think right and natural or wrong and unnatural it is immaterial. This subject has no place in the press.
Who cares whether he likes brown or pink? No one cares, except the media makes it so. Just the same with the Christmas number one. You're all just sheep, happy to listen to any new shepherd.

Fair comment. However, if my experience of being young a few years ago is anything to go by, then youngsters who don't join in (for example through lack of interest or maybe ability) are often tarred with negative stereotypes of lacking a required masculinity or by simply being referred to as a jessie or a p o o f and thus there is already an imbalance that needs addressing.

Formula 1 is not a sport, it's a rich boys club that change the rules every year.
Gareth Thomas is a human being first and foremost, and a great servant of Rugby, I couldn't care less if he is gay, homo, bent, likes men, or is even bisexual which he must be if he has kids... I am not sure why he came out, or even had to come out but he did and should be respected.
You can talk about sport being a level playing field but in no way shape or form is it, from Finance to drugs, to race and sexuality there are different laws, views and opnions applied.
Right got that off my chest..

no, you can't. RB was very high up the grid, and the diffuser that he and JB had when no-one else did allowed him to win the races at the beginning of the year. as soon as the more talented drivers had cars to match (Vettel, Hamilton etc) he didn't win a race. he isn't bad, but last year was very fortunate for him.

==================
There is one slight difference there Captain.. Un**ed, Arsenal, Chelsea etc generally rest players against weaker teams. I am not saying MM is wrong in resting players if they needed resting (and I am certain MM doesn't have to justify his decision to do so to me anyway.) To me the thing he did wrong was say he didn't think his team was good enough to compete with Un**ed.
Are all the lower clubs going to start putting in their second 11 against the top 3 or 4 teams simply because they feel they cant compete against them.

Maybe because in professional sport this is (sadly) still an issue? Justin Fashanu was the first to highlight it and since nothing has changed. Barca fans racially abuse players, despite them being the socialist team, and it’s acceptable for Man U fans (and others, Spurs) to sing horrific things at players.
This is news, and you can’t compare it to Jordan’s hair colour. I’d love to live in a world where being a gay sportsman wasn’t an issue, but to say we do is blindness.

--------------------------
what has being a professional sportsman got to do with it.
If he knew he was gay then their is a valid argument that either he gets married suppresses it for the rest of his life or he doesn't get married at all. While it is hard for him think about how his wife must have felt finding out that while they had been married he had been cheating on her with gay men he picked up in bars.
Nothing brave about that at all. What would have taken guts would have been not cheating on his wife, telling her about his suppressed urges, divorcing her quietly with no public hint of why and then doing what he wants discreetly.
How do you think his children feel reading about this in the press?
On another notre please, please, please do not let Dean ashton become a pundit as Townsend is bad enough but Ashton, Robbie Earle & Townsend together - disaster

captain, I understand what you're saying, but aside from the diffuser, the Brawn was hardly a wonder car was it. When other better cars got their acts together, they caught up. Brawn couldn't spend the money on extra testing and improvements, while the others did.
Until two drivers drive the same car, how can you really tell who is better?
F1 is so reliant on technological wizardry, thorough testing and reliability. Maybe Button isn't as good, but you can't say that on the basis that Lewis Hamilton has had the best car for years, and when he didn't and Button had the advantage, Button won. He held out with a car which lost it's advantage. Are you going to tell me that LH or Vettel would have done better in the Brawn? because you've got nothing to base that on if you do

Our whole game is going forwards and Fab wouldn't be the one sacrififced to play at the back. Anyway you don't have a play maker in your back four, so Fabregas isn't a viable comparison, maybe Song (who can play both positions anyway) and (yes) Denilson, who covers at full back when we lose one during the game through injury. The fact is Man Utd have got away with some abysmal performances this season (as have Arsenal) and your squad is getting found out a little this season. That's what I have seen anyway mate. it matters because of the bigotry directed at people like Sol, Le Saux and the rest. It matters because it is a product of the childish atmosphere in professional changing rooms has led to this.
it shouldn't matter, but if more people who come out and are open are accepted then it will make the issue unimportant, and not news. until we get there you should open your eyes and realise that stats prove there are thousand of gay sportsmen currently not living openly because they don't trust the game to treat them equally. Mauresmo lost millions, and that was 5 years ago. Please, this is a real issue, one of the few left in sport. Don't pretend it isn't.

It doesn't help that the gay "community" make such a big thing about their differences. Half of teh problem with derssing room cultures is that differences like that make people uncomfortable. By all means if you are homosexual then that is your choice and you have the right to be left alone but people (both straight and gay) should stop parading their sex lives in public and just be discreet.
I'm sure Gareth's wife & children would have preferred some discretion rather than a big public statement about how he cheated on her with men he met in gay bars while they were married.

First of all, it's not a choice. No-one would choose to suffer the sort of grief gay people do day in, day out. GT tried to force himself to be straight but he couldn't, sexuality doesn't work like that.
And it's interesting that you lay the blame for prejudice on the person receiving the abuse, not the person giving it. So a black person getting racist abuse is at fault for being different? Is that really the world you're living in?

First of all, it's not a choice. No-one would choose to suffer the sort of grief gay people do day in, day out. GT tried to force himself to be straight but he couldn't, sexuality doesn't work like that."
The point is about parading difference like it is a badge of honour. It is fine to be different in whatever way, be that sexuality, skin colour or something far more chosen. But if you parade it in public, you can expect public to share their opinion and views.
If you act as though you're ashamed of those differences, then just like in the playground, the bullies will find that soft spot and dig into it. Yes, there are bigots, and many people will think that sexuality and skin colour are such different things that they cannot possibly be considered in the same way.
I have my own views, my own prejudices, and so do most people. For example, I don't necessarily automatically dislike someone unless they start saying how its their year for the title this year. If they kept it to themselves, as befits a private thing, then people wouldn't pass comment or in the example case, laugh.

Oh RBA, you don't just replace a load of players for a couple of months, because what do you do with them when the big guns come back? No but seriously, I thought the same thing. I think we'll still be in for that Russian fella at the end of the season.

(personally i think you'll fair well, and MAYBE you could win it this year, but it is the beginning of the end, soon you'll be in te rafa boat, and have to sell to buy... the question you have to ask Fergy is who? And what what would you get for them...)

Genesis, as your being un-unitedly reasonable... i'll not wind you up... heres what i honestly think... United are not going to be the power house they have been over the next 10 years, and given the league so far this season, i think its a grand thing... But i will say this, old fergy is as sly as they come, and he will be the best bloke to lead you through what could be tricky times, you'll do well with him... But when he leaves, and its cant be that many years... You could (though i doubt it would be on a simialr scale) "do a leeds"... (In honesty i think you'll do "a liverpool")

Nah, we'll not end up poor, but maybe not be able to splash so much cash. But we've got a good solid base, have made our hay while the sun has shone, and aside from a few quiet years in the transfer market, we'll be top or there abouts for the rest of all our lives...

RBA well said. Even though I have to agree with Genesis Red, the Russian fella will soon be stolen.
I hardly fear for our position because even though we have lost more than last season, everyone around us is doing the same. At the end of the day, our guys are injured temporarily and this means come January, everyone should be back playing in their proper positions. And after Christmas is usually our better period so that I am not really too concerned

Newcastle always had this confused idea of their place in the great scheme of things. It was nice when they were plucky creative good guys, with the likes of Ginola and Asprilla. But when they started getting rational with their purchases is when it all fell down.
Neither of them were run properly - now, we may have some "rascals" in charge of us, but we're pretty stable even with that. I'd fear more for Liverpool really, and in all seriousness, as they didn't have the secure financial platform to begin with, and have themselves some right charlies in charge.

For all his trouble Turner might as well have smashed the ref in the face with an elbow or two.

Evening H2H. I didn't mean that Torres should've been sent off I don't think either of them were fouls. They were just one of those things that happens occasionally in football. Dzeko is the one everyone is talking about at the mo, so his price will probably rocket. Chamakh has been touted left, right and centre, but I think he´ll be available for free at the end of the season. I haven´t seen much of Podolski lately, but I remember he was a decent player and definetly the kind of striker that would fit our system. (Has he got any pace?)
The one thing you can count on with AW in the transfer market, is that you can´t really count on anything. He always does what he thinks is best for the entire squad and unless he finds the player that he wants, on his terms, then I can´t see him buying anyone.
Complain about this comment
Podolski has plenty of pace. He is like Theo, on the left but with added benefit of much better finishing.

All Verses are to be sung to the tune " while shepherds watched thier flocks by night "
While Arsene watched his crocks by night
all fall about the ground
a voice is heard across the void
he's a steel for just a pound
Digging deep, the price though steep
but Arsene finds the wedge
this guy is good and fleet of foot
will give the team an edge.
The big day comes for the new young gun
expectations running high
his first free kick he tamely slips
and Gallas starts to cry
Fear thee not the angels said
this lad is made of steel
thirty weeks should do the trick
the injury will then heel
Another one has hit the ground

the Lord looked down and Arsene frowned

Squad depletion who gives a fig

All the Goons throughout the world

we proved them wrong in deeds and song
but then thats nothing new
King Arsene takes his rightfull place
within the worlds elite
a squad threadbare with style and flair
has man u chelsea beat.

Now this lad is truly an enigma, one week he can be brilliant, the next "heskey-like" in his finishing. 15 goals and 8 assists last season from a 21 (?) year old striker is no bad stat, I'll also say this he has arguably the best leap of ANY player in the EPL and is our hardest working player. His time will come i'm sure, but just now we need the finished article and if bendtner's good enough to dislodge the new guy, then he'll get in the team, if he isn't well we can always sell him for a fat fee and sell on percentage.

Without gossip and scandal the newspapers wouldn't go under but they wouldn't exactly be sold out every day either. Is that more acceptable?
PARTY EGGS CAN ALSO BE A NICE ADDITION TO A PICNIC/MEAL
Nooooooooooooooooo even with that extra mayonaisey(SP?) goodness the original is still the best to me. Although if in a pinch i'd take a party egg, just don't tell anyone!
Does partyegg sound like some sort of ravers drug? lol

we heard about conrad black, and the Sun editor who hit her boyfriend. we heard about the tappers, and the fella who went to jail for the royal affair.

not as simple as that captain. the media creates the need as well.
They tell people what they want people to want, and then they give it to them. In England, people love to see others failing, so it makes them feel better. It is the only way to account for X-factor trials being shown, and all soaps especially Eastenders.
People are encouraged to keep up with the latest gossip, so then they supply it. As soon as one person reads something, they gossip about it, causing others to feel a need to find out. And then it has begun.
Just like in James Bond, soon you'll have someone like NOTW creating the stories as well as recording them... oh wait.
Incidentally, Best on Beckham - it may have been his most lucid moment, but he was dead wrong. He's a midfielder (not a striker or wing forward), he can (and does) cross better with his left than Besty ever could, when needed. But apart from that, he was right.

Yeah i was also going to add that the moral outrage aspect is painfully delicious - being that most of these scumbags have less morals than you find on the back of a postage stamp

Thank frag for small favours ... Cameroon have omitted Bassong from their squad. Cheers mates, I'd much rather keep him at home with Spurs :)

Editor: a person employed by a newspaper, whose business it is to separate the wheat from the chaff, and to see that the chaff is printed.
Elbert Hubbard (1856 - 1915)
The man who reads nothing at all is better educated than the man who reads nothing but newspapers.
Thomas Jefferson (1743 - 1826)
Advertisements... contain the only truths to be relied on in a newspaper.
Thomas Jefferson (1743 - 1826)
A newspaper consists of just the same number of words, whether there be any news in it or not.
Henry Fielding (1707 - 1754)
Trying to determine what is going on in the world by reading newspapers is like trying to tell the time by watching the second hand of a clock.
Ben Hecht (1893 - 1964)
Rage is the only quality which has kept me, or anybody I have ever studied, writing columns for newspapers.
Jimmy Breslin
To read a newspaper is to refrain from reading something worthwhile. The first discipline of education must therefore be to refuse resolutely to feed the mind with canned chatter.
Aleister Crowley (1875 - 1947)
last but not least:
All successful newspapers are ceaselessly querulous and bellicose. They never defend anyone or anything if they can help it; if the job is forced on them, they tackle it by denouncing someone or something else.
H. L. Mencken (1880 - 1956)

no, they followed him there, greeted him, he greeted them openly, and then they waited for the hour or so he was there, till he left... waited another hour (hmmm i wonder why?) and then he came back having probably forgotten his wedding ring or something.
I can't imagine why they waited, can you?
