Wenger boys against men

Post categories:

Robbo Robson | 12:23 UK time, Monday, 30 November 2009

Managers, eh? How do they manage? Lest I should be berated for the same old same old, let's be clear. Arsene Wenger's team were thumped. Thumped like they were last year at the Emirates by United in the Champs League.

Wenger's frustrations were many:

1. Disallowed goal for foot-up on Cech. He's watched it four times has Arsene and he can't see what it's about. Well, Cech nearly got tonked on the neck by a high boot so the ref gave a foul. Me, I wouldn't give it, but the modern goalkeeper is a rarer and more protected species than the Giant Panda and the decision was hardly surprising.

2. No penalty for Vela. Well this was because it WASN'T a penalty kick. Vela was crowded out and did that thing that your modern forward does when he's going nowhere - he stepped on the spectral banana skin and hoped - and you can injure yourself badly if you keep hitting the deck with your fingers crossed.

3. No RVP. The club v country debate looms largest when it's deprived a manager of a very influential player. But I don't buy this one. Players can get injured at any time. I don't think the Dutch national team have any vested interest in seeing Van Persie crocked either.

Wenger says the current arrangement favours the national teams too much. Too bloomin' right, sunshine. Ask a player which he'd prefer, a World Cup winner's medal or a Champs League winner's medal and I think it'll be 10 to 1 in favour of the former.

I don't believe that Diaby and Van Persie would've made much difference any road. It's hard to escape the impression that the team in red and white had been formed during a north London schools talent search and the team in blue were Cybermen masquerading as footballers.

I swear I saw Terry shouting 'Delete' as he took out the ball and Eduardo with one top-notch challenge. Mind you, his bleating to the ref after Vermaelen appeared to be fitting him for a pair of slacks took a lot of swallowing. Him and Carvalho virtually patented that kind of corner-kick cabaret.

Then you have the Arsenal footballer, as easy to differentiate from one another as a Subbuteo team: short, fleet, smart, hugely entertaining but, when it comes down to it, weedy (or if you will, Tomas Rosicky).

Drogba, at times, was shrugging off challenges like a quick-change artist getting out of a coat. Essien was a rampaging water buffalo trampling through a bunch of saplings. The Gunners still need some ballast out there.

I'm not claiming my Nostradamus badge here, but I picked Chelsea to win the title at the top of the season and I'll be right by the end of it.

There's some that reckon the African Cup of Nations will hamper them... I doubt it now that they've managed to force open a January window with some jemmy of an appeal.
Here you'd have to whole-heartedly agree with Wenger.

Having postponed the original sentence, Chelsea are effectively not being punished at all. I've heard whispers of Heskey coming in to cover Drogba. Hmmm - it's a bit like depriving a man of a seven-course banquet and saying to him 'Here have a biscuit.' But Chelsea won't struggle too much through that spell.

As they said on MOTD2, Anelka's playing with a smile on his face - a thing as rare and as beautiful as a Mick McCarthy compliment.

Terry's back to his best, the Lampard goal drought of a while back hardly seems to matter now and it's great to see Joe Cole playing the Deco role (far more effectively if you ask me).

So Wenger can bleat all he likes (much like Fergie two or three weeks back, it always takes a defeat to bring it out) and I'd love all that loveliness to win him something, but there's no two ways about it. There's more fight in the Spurs dog right now.

Elsewhere, Everton continue to look a shadow of their former selves. You couldn't criticise their endeavour, but the only thing that looks like causing any real damage is Fellaini's elbow.

Rafa claims the victory at Goodison is a turning point for what he endearingly calls 'the cloob'. Given he's got Blackburn, Pompey and Wolves coming up, you'd have to hope he's right. But by mid-Jan Arsenal home, Villa away, Spurs home will decide whether the Europa League is going to be talked up or not.

Avram Grant was pleased with his new side's efforts against a somewhat stumbling United (the closer they got to the opposition penalty box the more they stumbled). However it's hard to see them scoring with a front two of Dicky Picquionne and Desperate Dindane.

West Ham continue to put themselves in jeopardy by going in front. At 2-0 up I thought they were in real trouble. Turned out they're never more vulnerable than when they're five up.

And Hull seem revived with Bullard in the van. And at a time of utterly tedious goal celebrations - from the 20-yard knee-slider to the Rodallega thumb-suck via the Antonio Valencia deadpan - how great to see a genuinely funny goal celebration by a bunch of lads enjoying themselves.

Sparky didn't know why the pen was given. I suspect if he asks Toure he'll find out. I thought Hughes'd be the first manager to lose his parking space this season. I'll have to settle for second.

Chelsea will drop a few points over the African Nations, and will have some tired players after, but will it be enough? It's impossible to tell. Arsenal look exactly as most through - pretty, nice to watch, but lacking in a strong spine. Fabregas and Arshavin always look good, but they miss a Vieira like Chelsea will miss Essien and Drogba.

    Poor old Everton.

It must be difficult to watch your team play with such inferior physical presence to most other teams in the prem. To think ten years ago, you had the likes of Petit, Vieira, Adams, Keown and Parlour playing.

I know how you feel, for years we have wondered why Everton lost derby game after derby game. Well i'm afraid when you have players as physically inept as Scot Gemmill, Mark Pembridge, Gary Naysmith, Tony Hibbert and Li Tie you will lose games were you can be bullied out of it

Not a weak link in sight. It's a tough ask for Man U to win it but it'd be their best if they do!

But another week has gone where you skate over certain teams. Increasingly in the EPL, it can be more exciting for fans outside the top 6 to speculate over who is going down, but you never seem to do this (maybe its being a boro fan ;))

Also, as a bluenose, I was wondering what your thoughts were on us (or any midlands team) as you had written us off as relegation favourites at the start of the season. While Wolves are struggling, Villa are starting to get some of last years form back despite losing Barry.

I think Chelsea will struggle while the ACN is on, as the reason for their success seems to be a great striking relationship between Drogba and Anelka. Will 'Le Sulk' play as well with Sturridge or Kakuta?

There's no shame in losing to what is, at the moment, looking like the best team in the land, so come on Mr W, suck it up and take it like a man.

I think AW is miffed at the fact that the KNVB (Dutch FA) mis diagnosed RvP's injury, although why the Arsenal pysio team didn't double check before he went to the Plasenta Centre is beyond me.

National teams should spend some of that lovely dosh they rake in to cover injuries, but that's what you have to deal with when you manage a team of injury prone players.

I think that without Drogba to muscle opponents they're struggle, and Essien is an important engine room player for Chelsea. But I also fear i'm clutching at straws, and that the players that will come in can cover for the few games. The bigger risk is that they pick up injuries or exhaustion. Drogba is such an out for Chelsea - they can always pump it forwards or wide and one of Anelka or Drogba will be chasing it, pushing the defence back off the midfield. It's what United sorely lack, and why we need Macheda to get older and wiser faster.

Arsenal have the quality to see off the pretenders for third, but I can't see them threatening further up than that. RVP has had a stonking season up to the injury and its a damn shame for him. As a neutral (just) i'd say its time to give Walcott his head in front of Arshavin and Fabregas.

I agree. I just can't fathom why certain people seem to think that Chelsea wanted to postpone any ban so that they could buy players to cover for the ACON. Do they really think that Chelsea would wake up on 1 January, suddenly realise that players were off, for a bienial event, and would only then check that they had enough players left!

You're right, there may be some long term planning going on but any cover for ACON is just a bonus, not a plan.

That is not excuse making, just my observation. We were always going to be up against it and I took the match with a pinch of salt as it hasn't affected the title race merely confirmed my earlier suspiscions that being the only top four side not to have been weakened with serious long term injuries or players being sold Chelse aren't stronge rthan last season, everyone else is weaker and I think the way the game went yesterday that was obvious to all.
Almunia needs to be dropped and sold, that was an awful piece of flapping for the 2nd goal and where the hell was he for the 3rd?
Arshavin needs a kick up the backside as his form of last season is but a distant memory. Whomever does the medicals for our players needs to be shot, Chelsea looked so strong, we looked like we were made of balsa wood. Dissapointing? Yes. Unexpected? No.

Chelsea look very formidable at the moment - i don't see the ACON distracting them but with Abramaovich's well documented desire to win the CL you wonder whether going for multiple trophies may prove their undoing in one of the big 2.

Either that or Ferguson is going to have to produce some Yoda-esque mind games to throw them off kilter, one wonders who he'll recruit as his back-up man this year with Fat Sam out of action?

speaking of Man U - Nice to see Rooney and Giggs return to top diving form at the weekend ! On the plus side Rooney looks like he can take a pen, so that's another one of five for England come SA next summer.

Chelsea will get worse after this season as the players get older, and start to pick up injuries. United will lose Scholes and Giggs soon, but the younger fresh blood will step up, and a season or two like this will do them good. Not like they're not performing. Let's just remember where we are. It may seem like United are doing badly, but they're head and shoulders above the chasing pack still. Likewise Arsenal.

Chelsea will struggle to replace Drogba when he finally heads off, probably to Real or Inter.

Cech's problem since early last year has been the timing and judgement on crosses. He comes out through a crowd of players just the same. There was some good punching yesterday for example. Also, he still goes to ground just as bravely. Surely if he had lost his bottle, these would be the areas.

However, particularly after the Czech game against Turkey at Euro 2008, and a couple of times for Chelsea (home to Bolton last season perhaps) and this season (away to Wigan comes to mind) he has dithered or just simply come and missed it.

I do admire your confidence and faith in your team GR.
But unless you have a cristal ball or god forbid a shortened life expectancy this is an extreamly bold statement. Football, like many things in life, works in cycles, a what goes up must come down principle. E.g. L'pool swept away all before them in years gone by, not so much anymore.
The impending retirement of SAF, he can't go on forever, will surely have a major effect on your club, other than that, there are so many other factors that could effect the team in so many ways that sustained success is never guaranteed.

The fact that everyone thought they would collapse due to the exit of Tevez and CR7. As of now, Man U has a complete team and play together like a complete team and have been plagued by injuries for the beginning for this season yet this hasnt stopped them from winning games. Where it wasn't equal was up front. No question.

And Terry was awesome, sadly for Gooners.

The shame for Wenger is that all three of his big boys, Diaby, Bendtner and RVP all got injured at the same time. I did jokingly say that maybe we needed to play Vermaelen up front, based on him banging in 6 crackers in the first 10 games. Ditto Gallas. Problem is, with Djourou injured, where's the cover?? Senderos and Silvestre right now....

Didn't quite get the subbing of Song either - he was having a good game and he's the toughest tackler in the midfield right now. Maybe he was injured, maybe he's gonna say hi to Adebayor and Toure midweek?

I do agree with Wenger though that if the Arsenal players' first touch hadn't let them down, they might have got 2-3 or 3-3. They had a lot of pressing time, but didn't open the door when the had the chance.

    That's football I guess.

I think Arsenal already have a stron holding mid in Song. He was good yesterday, won the ball back plenty of times. What in my humble opinion we lacked was a spearhead like RVP that links with the attacking mids.

And against strong teams like Chelsea, I would start with Walcott and Arshavin on the wings. They might me small in frame but they make well up for it in the sheer speed and turning power.

The first two goals both came from the Chelsea left wing where Cole fired them crosses in and Sagna was unable to stop him doing so.

The mid-week game against Standard Liege was very physical too. In the last 20 minutes they got quite nasty, injuring Gibbs and throwing in wild tackles. But Arsenal coped with it.

And no Arsenal did not get thumped by Chelsea. Yes Chelsea won well, hats off. But there were sustained spells of pressure by Asrsenal that kept them pegged back. It was Chelsea's defence that won them the game more than their strongmen up front.

Didn't realise Standard Liege were of the same quality that Chelsea are.
The point is that Chelsea have big GOOD players who can bully and fight for the ball and contain some skill(can't remember who it was but did you see the Arsenal defender who just bounced off Drogba in the box as he chased down a ball to then cross). Teams like Standard Liege don't and have to resort to nasty tackles same as some of the smaller teams in the EPL

I am not sure what is happening to Arsene in his older day's. Earlier on in his career he used to go for power and pace. This is the man who brought George Weah through, for example. Nowadays it is Vela, Walcott, Nasir, Rosicky and so on..

It's OK beating the bottom of the league via 2 penalties but how have they done against top 4?

Dodgey against Arsenal (in fact I would say outplayed by Arsenal)
    Well beatean at Anfield
    Lost to Chelsea.

Chelsea stand out at this juncture and yes, UTD seem to play better after Christmas, but in essence this year it wil be different, they lack creativity and that individual who can open up a defence. UTD will finish 3rd or 4th this year, change will occur and once they struggle to make the Champions league they will fail to attract the better players.

In essence UTD have had all the breaks this season, numerous amounts of added time, penalty calls, manager rants, and got away with it. Surely it will come to an end? If so, 3rd or 4th place mediocracy will transpire.

I'd like to come in on this club v country argument. The way I see it is the mority of players bought by the PL clubs are international players when they come to the clubs or have the potential to become international players. The managers should therefore understand and accept that the player will be selected to play for country at certain times of the year, irregardless of the club paying his wages.

If managers don't want their players going off and playing international footballers, DONT BUY INTERNATIONAL QUALITY FOOTBALLERS, it's simple.

Interesting and reminds me so much of my days at Boarding School in the late 70s when I as captain yes CAPTAIN of my schools rugby team learnt we were to play a two match home and away against HMS GANGES.

the first leg was at our gaff, I remember seeing the team bus, or horse drawn carriages arrive in the driveway and saw these " boys " get of the bus. I looked in horror at what I was about to face. They were hardly " boys " at all and in fact they looked well into thier mid twenties to me. the size difference was very stark. Non the less the game had to proceeed.

We happened to have had a very good Coach and he taught us the more artistic side to Rugby . as we were quite lightwieght and very fleet of foot we actually turned over the mighty Ganges very emphaticly as well.

    we was well chuffed.

However the return match was to be very different. The Ganges had done thier homework well, we took to the field and i think it was within 15 mins I had my Collar Bone taken out ( i was scrumhalf ) so i was off for treatment to the nearest hospital, when I came too i notice the ward was the temp home of our fly half, both wingers as well as the full back.

We Lost by a very huge marjin. My career playing rugby was finished was not happy at all had to take up Cricket.

I agree with you re. Wenger, it's all excuses. At the end of the day, Chelsea were just a lot stronger than Arsenal and with a 3-0 victory you can't really say they got lucky. Drogba is in my opinion the best striker in the Premiership whilst on form, and his finish was of the top draw. With all respect to Eduardo he's nowhere near the level of a Drobga/Anelka/Van Persie/Torres/Rooney etc. That injury inevitably has taken a lot out of him.
Are Arsenal's title hopes over? Most probably. But I don't think it's a one horse race as many seem to think. United and Chelsea are a lot better than anyone else, but between those two I don't think there is too much difference. Ok, so Chelsea look unstoppable at the moment yet they are only 5 points above the current champions - i.e. not a very big lead. Add in the fact that this is traditionally the time of year when United go on a long unbeaten run and I feel people saying Chelsea "will win the league" are incredibly premature.
Liverpool certainly face a huge fight to get into the top 4, but I still think they'll do it. Man City are hardly in good form themselves, whilst I doubt Spurs will last the distance. the Reds are only 2 points outside the top 4 anyway, so it'd only take a small unbeaten run, and they'd be right up there.
As for Sparky well, he is in trouble. After all the money he's spent, a draw against Hull City is a very dissapointing result. I doubt he'll go right away, but he can't have long left unless results pick up very soon...

Any road Eduardo's foot was high so it was a 50-50 decision for the ref. The own goal is neither here nor there. Ask Everton fans about horrible deflections. And Clichy or Gibbs would've done nowt to combat Cashley as they would have been playing on the opposite side of the park from Cole. Still at least we agree that the odds on Chelsea screwing up from here and very slim indeed.

I think that to solve these problems every team should be given a trophy at the end of every season starting with a really big one for the Premier League winners and getting slightly smaller as you go down the leagues until the bottom placed team gets a small medal.

And to stop players getting injured a vet should be on standby at every game. If a player goes down and stays on the ground for more than 20 seconds the vet comes on erects screens and despatches the player with a bolt gun. Using this method no club ever has an injured player to complain about, they just bring in the next best player they've got.

Then fair dues... Or if cheslea just took a bunch of british sailors prisoner for sailing to close to the Kings Road, then again... thats fair dues.

Otherwise, i think thats a bit harsh....

I've seen plenty of United games this year and without Rooney I think they'd be lucky to finish in the top four. The upcoming transfer window is critical for SAF in my opinion. He needs to get Villa because if he doesn't they may as well hand Chelsea with big shiny thing straight away. Even with him, I still think Chelsea look favourites (though I am not stupid enough not to remember that United do have a habit of running like a stabbed rat in the second half of the season and they're sure to make a battle of it at the very least).

The one point that I didn't notice Robbo making was the fairweather Arsenal fans leaving 10 mins before the end. I don't think this would happen at any of the other current top 5 teams, and even when Wigan were getting beaten 9-1 by Spurs their fans weren't heading for the bus.

I am glad everyone is talking about this game anyway. Mainly as it takes the spotlight off us. We are now in 5th and only 3 points behind Spurs in 3rd. Funny how that has happened when most of the last fortnight pretty much everyone has written off our chances of getting top 4 this season!!! Considering the Liverpool line is currently being led, very ably, by a 19 year old I think that is an amazing achievement. Roll on May and lets just see who the top 4 are.

NB: we lost 2-0 to Chelsea. If results against chelsea have anything to do with it then perhaps Arsenal should be worried about getting top4 a little bit more. Chelsea have certainly shown everyone how to set up against Arsenal and I think you will see most of the bottom half of the table playing the same way. Big strong players and very physical all over the pitch.

Anyway I am going back to being an anonymous suporter again and lets just keep flying under the radar.

Seeing if I can join in the discussion even though it is off-topic then surely if there was someone from man utd that was sports personality of the year it would be SAF for setting the team up to win the league and keeping players like Scholes and Giggs going when most other teams would have packed them off by now.

It is not down to Giggs that he gets the best out of himself at this age it is down to SAF and how he uses them.

In terms of the others the biggest achievment is probably Button considering I think he had only won 1 race before the season started and it was a brand new team. However Tom Daley and Beth Tweddle should both be up there for winning medals in sports that we are actually not very good at.

Ennis, although very fit, did not break a world record and neither did Idowu. Both out. Andy Murray didn't win a major yet. Out. Andrew Strauss managed to win a series by being incredibly lucky and England not being the better team. When we dominate Australia rather than scraping past them that will be an achievement+it was on sky so hardly anyone saw it. David Haye-are you joking! He achieved much more at cruiserweight+it was on sky box office so hardly anyone saw it.

Mark Cavendish I think he rides bikes?? On road or track I don't know. I follow a lot of sport and I don't actually know who he is. Is he going to get the popular vote when people who know quite a lot about sport, like me, don't know who he is? I doubt it.

In terms of British sport I would have thought that Ronaldo was the most important player, premiership, CL final, well in other competitions etc., bagged paris hilton etc

    Fascinating facts about weasels.
The weasel is a small furry mammal ( latin name mustela,) that is often confused with ferrets, or pine martins. They are rarely confused with monkeys.
The weasel is native to Britain, Mainland Europe and North America. Interestingly these are areas where the monkey is not native.
The weasel’s natural enemies include foxes, badgers and birds of prey. They consider them to be worthy foes, but then they have never met a monkey.
Weasels are well known through the nursery rhyme ‘pop goes the weasel’. Of course anyone who has ever witnessed a weasel explode will testify that it in fact makes more of a squelching sound.
Weasels do not live in trees. You are probably thinking of monkeys.
All weasels are homosexuals. They mate with the opposite sex for the continuation of the species but they do not enjoy it.
Monkeys are much better than weasels.
Weasels are poisonous. If you are bitten by one then if you do not take the antidote within twenty four hours you will die. Coincidentally the antidote is secreted only by monkeys.
Weasels can fly, they just choose not to. This is because they are lazy and shiftless and know that monkeys are naturally superior.
The word weasel, when written backwards reads "KILL THEM ALL"

What is true? Robbo joked that United players stumbled near the box when all replays prove that the penalties were fully justified (apart from Pompey's and the non-penalty for the push on Giggs). So why did Robbo feel the need to mention it?

Why a few weeks ago did he slate Ferguson for whinging to refs (in the aftermatch of the Chelsea game) but when Ireland's players blame their World Cup exit on everything-but-the-kitchen-sink (implying all kinda of secret agendas and conspiracies), Robbo changes his tune completely and backs them up?

It's vitriol or violins, depending on the team. Robbo knows his target audience and he knows how to get cheap laughs.

Contrary to what you might think, I like this blog which is why I read it, and I often find anti-United jokes funny, but why imply United players cheat when clearly they didn't?

if you need this answered you should change your name to pondscum. fergie whines about tiny things that any normal person can see affect both teams. Ireland lose out to a blatantly terrible miss by the ref and you think it the same.

At what point did I say I want people to like United? That would be terrible (and pretty boring too). I have no problem with people hating United.

But my point, which you seem to have missed, is why did Robbo make the joke about United players stumbling near the box? Come on, answer me that. They were fouled, so why did Robbo make a joke implying that they dived?

"fergie whines about tiny things that any normal person can see affect both teams. Ireland lose out to a blatantly terrible miss by the ref and you think it the same."

Robbo's blog about Fergie came after the Chelsea match - the most important domestic match of the season so far - when the referee missed a penalty for United, wrongly awarded the free-kick that the goal came from, and then missed the foul as the ball came in to the box. I agree that Ferguson can often be petty with his complaints but in this case he was completely justified to criticise the ref (as almost every other manager does by the way). The most important match of the season DIRECTLY affected by the referee - but Robbo chooses to ignore this and concentrate on Fergie's 'whinging' instead. Contrast that to Ireland game, when he didn't criticise their reaction at all (which btw gets more and more laughable by the day). Keane, Trapattoni, Duff all imply corruption and hidden agendas but not a word from Robbo. Different rules.

Incidentally, I totally disagree with your assertion that without Ronaldo United 'still have many players who regularly dive'. The fact you say so, lessens any reasonable argument you might have.

Well... it has been abit slow on here this afternoon...

We are facing the Daggers tonight, away! Bit of a history between us, always a good match... I get the felling were in for a beating, as thier a damn hard side to play... But weve been tighter than a meiser at the back as of late so we could be in thier like swin wear if were quick off the break... Also first starts for a couple of new boys... One lad was an Ozzy int. at under 20s, weve pinched him from Reading for a month... If we grab a win and a few above drop points... we could be back in the play off zone!

    Come on boys!

RBA, I think the extra refs behind the goals is only a baby step in the right direction, but it does reinforce the idea that it's only cheating if it happens in the box. What about all the fouls, handballs, dives etc, that go unseen on the rest of the pitch? Or is that not considered punishment worthy anymore?

H2, it's an impossible puzzle! Maybe 4 linesmen so there's one on each side of the pitch in both halves and for all off-side calls, both flags have to go up? That'd be fun. Or....200 referees assistants surrounding the pitch and 6 refs on it, all miked up to one another! Or, turn a 90 minute game into a 14 hour extravaganza where every passage of play is reviewed and discussed by all the officials in a huge room with a big table and replay monitors covering the walls and an unlimited supply of juice and cookies. Sounds too much like the NFL already!

Just to clarify for the umpteenth time, I wasn't criticising Robbo - or indeed anyone else - for daring to have a go at my team, I was questioning why he should imply that United players dived on Saturday when clearly they didn't.

I look forward to watching your team play the game without a hint of cheating e.g. grabbing a shirt, exagerting a fall or even, god forbind, claiming a throw in or corner or goal kick that clealry isnt
p.p.s Back to Ronaldo - he certainly dived several times in the box playing against the boro - agree/disagree???

By the way I also think the quality (as well as the quantity) of the blogs here are pretty good with a lot of humour and not too much biased hypocritical moaning. Or am I just naive?
