Rafa revived
Well done, Rafa. Well done, son. I cherished his performance on Sunday.
I kept thinking, ee, that's the last time we'll see him with his cub reporter's notebook. That's the last time he'll do that funny dance with his index fingers. Purslow, Hicks and Gillett had made his demise even more inevitable by publicly backing him. And Gerrard and Torres weren't fit.
On the other side stood the wily Ferguson, chewing away frantically like a grazing water buffalo on fast forward and eyeing up the referee's waistline in the hope of finding something to talk about other than the tripe his team has turned out.
And Rooney was in the side, unsurprisingly considering the Old Trafford mouthpieces were assuring us how doubtful he was for this game.
Vidic completes an unwanted hat-trick
But then Fernando's highlighted barnet trotted out on to the park after all, and you could see Nemanja Vidic turn from a stout workman in sturdy boots into a flighty trollop in seven-inch heels. I've never seen a top quality defender so terrified by an opposition number nine (even an 80% fit one).
His efforts to stop Liverpool descended from something rugged to challenges so lame not even Dick Dastardly and Muttley would've stooped to it. That's three red cards in three appearances for the Serb. Next year they might as well start running his bath at kick-off.
United were rubbish, mind you. As bad as Liverpool have been. Fergie said as much, even though he still saw fit to direct some barbs the way of the ref.
You can't see his team bagging the League or Champs League this season. Rooney wasn't near his best and Man City must be thanking their lucky stars that they didn't scupper the Berba bid during the last winter transfer window.
I've been buying the 'he just looks lazy 'cos of the way he plays' argument for a while, but I've come to the conclusion that young Dimitar looks lazy because.... he IS lazy. Not languid or nonchalant. Lazy. Half-arsed. And not worth £30m of anyone's debt.
His replacement got the usual tedious stick. I know there's no love lost between the two clubs but why Liverpool fans can't get their heads around Owen trying to resurrect a crumbling career at United is absolutely beyond me. The least they could do is say nowt. A better option would be to give him a nice round of applause for winning them an undeserved FA Cup in 2001. Or buy him.
Hell you had the mighty rear of Robbie Fowler squeezing other squad members off the bench a while back (Another of Benitez's less thought through acquisitions). You'd have thought a fit and firing Owen would be have been welcomed back into the Anfield fold with open arms.
To me, it's not the same as, say, Sol tripping across North London, or Tevez's billboard-enhanced crossing of Manchester. That's inviting flak. Owen had long since left Anfield and until Ferguson stepped in, he'd nowhere to go.
Ince got the same stick when he joined Liverpool from Inter Milan. I mean so what? Your club flogs a bloke and years later, you still expect him to only play for clubs that meet your seal of approval? Nonsense.
Still. Fans will be fans. And all them jeers and boos that turned on Rafa last Tuesday were forgotten as Pepe Reina Adebayored it across the Anfield turf to celebrate a quality finish from Ngog. (Now there's a phrase I never thought I'd ever use, like: 'what a quality performance that was from John and Edward'.)
Incidentally, can anyone get me into the X-Factor backstage area? My plan is to don a hairdresser's disguise, gel them freaky twins' hairdos into sharp points and poke each of them with the sharpened hair of the other. It'd be prodding someone with the most annoying pencil in the world. Do get in touch if you can help.)
Owen was not welcomed back with open arms
But Liverpool deserved their victory, played well, and if Torres' groin stays intact, the climb could continue. It's a big if, mind.
And if Sunday's match proved owt, it was that neither club has enough going for it to win a title this year. I am becoming more certain with every passing week that Chelsea will lift the Premier League trophy come May - in fact possibly even before May.
Neurotic Blues keep bleating about the African Cup of Nations of course, but Drogba, Essien and Mikel will miss away games at Hull and Burnley and home ones v Sunderland and Birmingham. Hardly taxing when you think that Chelsea's squad is deeper than a Tony Pulis frown.
Hassungotta Kalou will be in Africa too which can only help the Stamford Bridge cause. I know he bagged a brace in midweek but the lad clearly has no idea where the ball's going to end up after (and if) it's connected with his feet.
In the meantime, we welcome Gordon Strachan to the promised land. May the smog that surrounds you be kind, may your inhaler never run out, may our terraces fill as if in the grip of Juninho-fever and may we stop conceding spawny last-minute equalisers without which we'd be top of the bloody league! I think he'll do well.

I'm Derek Robson. People call me Robbo. Legend has it I was raised in the furnace and smog of Teesside. Some might say I took the hard road. I like to tell folk I had trials for Middlesbrough, for Hartlepool and for burglary (not guilty). I've always loved sport. My job is to say it as I see it - whether it's in the bar of the Blue Bell or on this blog. You won't find me calling a spade a soil-redistribution implement.

Well Robbo, a tad late with this as most of it has already been covered in great deal on your previous blog and others but I suppose it was always likely to be your chosen topic given the weekends action and I would agree on your assessment of the Owen reception.
Personally I wasnt overly shocked by the result. I suspected a draw before the game which possibly would have been a result both teams would have settled for given the circumstances but wasnt as shocked as some by the Liverpool win. Partly because I think those games tend throw up a different level of performance and partly because while Liverpool have been poor, Man Utd havent exactly been great themselves but have been grinding out the results which has been the difference.
Have to suspect the Spaniards would be favourites to capture the Champions League but wouldnt rule out Utd yet from league based on that performance. At this rate of ruling teams out based on single weekends you will be left with Villa as favourites for the title.

For the umpteenth time - seeing as now you as well as McNulty and countless others don't get it
Owen refused to sign a new deal tried to run down his contract at Anfield (claimed he couldn't sign because his agent was on a 12 month sabbatical) and leave on a Bosman. Rafa wanted him to stay but Owen wouldn't sign a new deal and because he'd got his existing contract down to 12 months it was a case of sell now for £8m or lose him the next year for nothing.
He left for half his value and we won the European Cup without him. HA-HA !
12 months later having been unable to oust Raul & Ronaldo from Madrid's starting 11 (shock horror !) he needlessly feared for his World Cup chances (Sven was always going to pick him) and wanted to return home to secure that England spot.
Liverpool/Rafa were happy to have him back. Newcastle offered £17m, Real Madrid went - '£9m profit in 12 months?, thankyouverymuch !' Liverpool went 'hang on, we're not giving you £9m to get our own player back'.
Owen should have told Newcastle he wasn't interested and Madrid would have been forced to do a deal with Liverpool but he didn't, he agreed to join Newcastle for a mega salary at which point the only way he would come to Anfield was if we'd matched the £17m price tag - that was never going to happen.
For that reason he was jeered whenever he returned to Anfield with Newcastle (though not with the same venom).
Having screwed Rafa/us over twice there was little chance Benitez was going to go back to 'buy' the injury prone striker a third time.
So he joins Man Utd and assorted hacks/pundits/bloggers expect us to give him a hero's welcome?
utterly clueless
Tevez was only ever on loan at Man Utd, Owen was at Liverpool from the age of 10, if he didn't foresee that he was due that kind of reception on Sunday then it merely confirms what many fans have said about him over the years - when it comes to football the only thing Michael Owen cares about is Michael Owen.

What is it that certain people in the media are so blind to what most fans think. We keep being told that fans are what make the game, and it is the fans of both Liverpool and other clubs can see in Owen that leads them to believe he deserved a good booing.
Owen could have stayed at Liverpool in the summer of 2004 but refused to sign a new contract that Benitez offered him. Liverpool were as good for Owen as Owen was good for Liverpool.
Then, five years later when Owen is looking for somewhere to boost his World Cup chances, he thinks that Liverpool should go out on a limb for him? And when they don't he choses Man U!
I can completely see why he was booed. Complete self interest from England's Michael Owen.
As for Chelsea, I hope people aren't suggesting that this squad of pensionable are actually going to win the league....

I agree with Robbo about Owen - what exactly does he owe Liverpool? He scored many goals for the club over a number of years and almost single-handedly won the FA Cup for them in 2001.
I believe he actually supported Everton as a kid - or did I dream that?
Would have been interesting to see his reaction if he'd scored.
Many players 'run down' their contracts in order to negotiate transfers to other clubs whether that be for more money, better chance of trophies or just a new challenge. That's the rules since Bosman, it's business - get over it.
At Sheff Utd, Michael Brown did this a few years ago, and went to Spurs for a cut price £500,000 as he had 6 months left on his contract and wasn't interested in signing a new one.

I didn't like Liverpool when Owen was there. I felt he was very single minded and didn't really work for the teams cause. If you watch Torres, you see that if he is unsuccessful by playing off the shoulder of the defender, then he will drop deep to pick up the ball and hold up for Gerrard and the wingers.
Owen didn't do this often enough (especially in his last season with Liverpool) which is why I was very happy he left.
I feel that Liverpool fans shouldn't boo Owen because as soon as Owen left, Liverpool were the champions of Europe! Cisse may not have been as good a finisher but he worked alot harder for the teams cause. Liverpool would never win the Champions league with Owen in their first team because the big clubs would nullify his threat with ease. Effectively reducing your team to 10 men.

Cahill had a release clause in his contract that if anyone came in with an 8 million quid bid he could leave but in his new contract that's been eliminated which is why you hear all the talk of 20 or 22 million. So, NO, Cahill is under contract and should not be permitted to replace Rio at ManU or anybody else's failing centre-backs anywhere else. Please Meggo, if you're still reading Robbo, don't be tempted, he's carrying the already fragile defence. Replacing Rio in South Africa would be a far more reasonable and readily accommodated request.

I doubt Owen will really have cared too much about the booing. As an Everton fan, he demonstrated he doesn't care too much about allegiances when he joined Liverpool as kid - very sensible, gave him a far better chance of success. Likewise his move to Real where he demonstrated the ability to score well in another league, but didn't sell enough shirts for them to keep him.
Going to United was a golden opportunity for all concerned. And god knows Liverpool fans would rather have had him for free to back up Torres than see him in a United shirt. No wonder they're bitter and resentful.
There is a marked difference though, between his move to United, and the likes of Tevez who openly moved direct to rivals purely for the money. He doesn't deserve coining, but he does deserve abuse.

Being a rugby League fan, we at Hull KR had a player called James Webster who was unfortunately released because of a shoulder injury. He then saigned for our arch-rivals Hull FC and played against us in the last game of the 2008 season - he received a round of applause and Hull KR fans chanted his name throughout the match.
Compare that to football and it is an entirely different ball game (sponsored literally by Jamie Redknapp!)

I don't think the distaste for Owen is as much for going to Utd as it is for the manner in which he left. He was refusing to sign a contract and he forced the club into a cut price deal last minute at a time we needed him the most. Benitez was convincing both him and Gerrard to stay. Gerrard did and he left us with Baros, pongolle, Mellor and Cisse as strikers. I also think that's the reason Benitez never re-signed him, he hasnt quite forgiven him for that one.

Let's not forget that if a player isn't performing or if the money is right then clubs have no qualms about selling our heroes from under our noses, but we still go back every week to cheer on the next hero.

What would you expect Owen to do?
He has the opportunity to go and play for Real Madrid - arguably the biggest club in the world. He is coming to the end of his contract so naturally he doesnt want to resign and run the risk of Liverpool playing hardball and scuppering his chances of going.
He had served Liverpool well and wanted a new challenge. Its easy to say "oh well he shouldve stayed or he shouldve signed a new contract" but in reality he wanted to go to Madrid and its hard to blame him. Would Liverpool have been calling Barry a turncoat had they managed to sign him? No they would be cheering him each week and defending his decision to join a bigger club.
The theories of loyalty are well and good but clubs arent exactly going to be showing you a world of loyalty if you arent performing.
Without being party to what was going on behind the scenes its impossible to know for sure what was being said. Madrid were a bigger club and probably offering him far more money to join and in all honesty are there many out there that could refuse such a deal?
Similarly to those that say he shouldve resigned for Liverpool - how much of a say did he really have? Once Newcastle were willing to offer double what Liverpool were there was no way Madrid were going to entertain selling him to Liverpool regardless of what Owen wanted. Can you imagine him approaching the board and asking them to forgo 8 million just for his own sake?
I can see how Liverpool fans would feel a bit sour about the transfer but it needs to be looked at in perspective.

I know for a fact that Owen begged to stay at Liverpool, but they rejected him, cold heartedly... and forced him in to Madrid, and when things didn't work out at Madrid (they would have if it wasn't for some bigger boys who kept poor Michael out the team) he tried again at the door of Anfield (think the door to the city of OZ) and again was rejected... so he had to hitch his away across the country to Geordie land, where he set about plying his trade... and the trouble was that due to an evil Cockney warlock (and his (not so) wise monkey assistant), the once proud army of Toon were relegated... So once more, Owen with a song in his heart made his way across this nation to once more beg at the feet of his former club for another chance... And i know for an absolute fact that Rafa gave Owen a wedgy and chinese burn before coldy, sending him on his way once more... But our young hero, was not down for long as one day a kindly old knight found him playing World cup willies in a car park behind Lidls and offered him another chance...
And that is exactly how it happened, anything else you here is a web of lies spun by a bitter scouseman...

I do think United need to improve in january if we are to win the league. We should never play giggs and scholes in the same team, or indeed scholes and carrick, theyre just too slow together. I look forward to seeing hargreaves back but we need a RB, LM and a goalie pretty sharpish.
It's no surprise to see people saying united won't win the league this year as it happens quite literally every year. Just don't forget united lost both ties to pool last year and came out on top. Write off united at your own peril.

Players hold the cards when theyre hot property. I dont honestly think Owen would have signed for any other prem side at the time but Madrid was a different prospect. You arent leaving to go to your main rivals or anything.
If you take your way of looking at it then essentially players are bound to clubs for life until the club feels fit to sell them or release them. The situation was tricky given the contract situation. Madrid probably realised the fact that Owen could be got on the cheap and went for him but in all liklihood werent going to be willing to pay megabucks for him so Own was trapped between rejuecting the opportunity flat out - fairly hard to do in my view, or signing a new deal and hoping Madrid would maintain interest (unlikely in my view). Other than that all he could do was not sign and tell it like it is. I can see how fans would be annoyed by this but I doubt it was something Owen had planned out. The opportunity arose and Owen was going to be hard pressed to refuse it.
There are other scenarios such as Ashley Cole where you get they impression the guy is just a money grabber with no sense of loyalty and moved cross city to main rivals but Owen scenario isnt the same. I doubt he ever dreamed of signing for Utd at the time until his career had hit the wall and again you can hardly blame him there.
I honestly dont think he had much say in the Newcastle deal. Madrid couldve threatened to leave him in the reserves rather than be hijacked into selling him to Liverpools offer. If the amounts offered had been the same theres no doubt where Owen would have gone.
The issue seems to be mainly with the timing of the contract, but like I said - Owen didnt plan it that way. The interest from Madrid probably only came about due to his contract running out as opposed to Owen planning years in advance he wouldnt resign.

The best response was Ngog's Owen-esque cool finish late in injury time for my money.

I know Owen wanted to play for Madrid - i don't blame him for that but he was only 24 it wasn't as if this was at the end of his career. Madrid already had a strike partnership of Raul/Ronaldo. Owen was misguided in the extreme that he was going to be anything other than back-up to those two at that time.
Madrid were not going to let him sit in the reserves on £100,000 a week either. It was a game of brinkmanship and Owen's England career and a bigger £££ offer from Newcastle proved the most important factors.

Its not hard to blame him at all. Did he make the right choice? The proof of the pudding is in the eating, we won the Champions League the very next season. Liverpool fans were still appreciative of his achievements in a red shirt at this point. Then he chose to consider a move to Newcastle when Liverpool had shown a firm interest in him.
Similarly to those that say he shouldve resigned for Liverpool - how much of a say did he really have? Once Newcastle were willing to offer double what Liverpool were there was no way Madrid were going to entertain selling him to Liverpool regardless of what Owen wanted......
3:50pm on 27 Oct 2009, JoeDavisRoach
You're obviously a bit slow JDR. If Owen had ruled a move to Newcastle out Real Madrid would have been forced to negotiate with Liverpool, or keep an unsettled and unwanted player.

Theres no doubt Owen decided to run down his contract (i.e. not resign) once he heard Madrid were interested. As I said before what were his options.
1. Madrid probably insinuated they werent going to pay silly money for him that Liverpool would no doubt demand were he to sign again so if he did sign a new contract the move most likely would be off.
2. Let his contract run down and hope Liverpool decide to sell him.
I cant see how he could have gone to Madrid if he done things differently.
He was only 24 yes, but had been in the Liverpool side for about 6 years. Its not like he can assume that Madrid are going to come knocking again. Competition is always going to strong up front at Madrid but as a confident young player Im sure he wanted to give it a go. The 100k a week would soften the blow of sitting the odd game on the bench Im sure aswell.
I honestly dont think Owen had much say in the deal to Newcastle. Ive no doubt hed have preffered Liverpool. If the offers were even close he may have been able to have a say but theres just no way Madrid were going to go half price. Madrid did a similar thing with Robben (and other players Im sure) where theyve no problem letting you play out in the reserves if you play hardball. In the end he had to move or suffer from not playing for a year and potentially losing his England status.
a certain amount of bitterness is to be expected over the deals but its not the same kind of thing as Sol Campbell or Ashley Cole.
Due to the nature of the timing I dont think Owen had much choice other than let his contract down if he wanted to go to Madrid and I also think he had little or no say in the return move to Newcastle. You may disagree but thats just my guess.

You may have a point in the fact Liverpool would probably have looked much less like scoring with no Torres. In fact, they probably would not have scored.
Still, it does mean the score would have ended 0-0 as it was not Torres' fault that United similarly looked toothless up front. Whilst changing the defence may change matters at Old Trafford, having Rooney play well in a similar vein to Torres would probably be more beneficial and more likely to yield a home win.

I suppose fictional characters have free reign to display bias in their blogs - not a single other blogger on BBC purposely flaunts their bias, so I have deduced that this must be the ruling.
We can see this from small passages such as:
"United were rubbish, mind you. As bad as Liverpool have been. Fergie said as much, even though he still saw fit to direct some barbs the way of the ref."
A non-biased reporter, at the very least, would mention that the referees decisions may have been influenced by the home crowd (the fact being that he was basically bending over for them), when pointing out that SAF had a dig.
I do know that the author will make "comedy" remarks about Rafa and any other manager in the news - I can't deny that, but this article shows a very obvious pro-Scouse, anti-Manc mentality.

#105, Last season at Anfield didn't Liverpool beat United without Torres? We also beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge with no Torres or Gerrard last season. Out of the 38 games, Gerrard and Torres played together 14 times. Yet somehow we finished 2nd with 86 points. Our highest points total since the 1987-88 season. And were league top scorers.
We've lost 6 games in all competitions this season. Gerrard and Torres played in 4 of them.
No doubt though that we are a better team when we have our 2 best players in the team. But does that not apply to all teams?
If Ronaldo and Rooney only played 14 of the 38 league games last season would they have won the league last season? Or the season before? I don't think so.
Since Essien, Lampard and Drogba have started getting a few injuries how many league titles have they won?
Fact is this: Take out the better players in any team and they will struggle to win the biggest prizes. Teams can get through the odd game without their better players but during a whole season it has an effect. Would Barca have won La Liga and the CL with Messi and Iniesta injured for large chunks of the season? How many games have Real Madrid won this season without Ronaldo?

I would also point out that Giggs & Rooney were ineffective by their standards probably as they used up most of their energy walking alongside the ref for 90 minutes. They reminded me of kids fighting to swing off the teachers arm at breaktime.
The Vidic moan by Fergie was partly right in that the 1st booking was harsh viewed by itself but was probably his 5th foul on Torres by that point.

To those who say that the Owen booing was predominantly due to the circumstances surrounding his departure from Liverpool, correct me if im wrong as i don't recall all the details but didn't Steve McManaman do a similar thing and let his contract run down before also signing for Real Madrid? yet i don't seem to remember him getting the same level of abuse as Owen when he returned to Anfield.
On that basis it can only be because Owen signed for United, which is fair enough as United v Liverpool is arguably the most intense and bitter rivalry in English football and to be fair i don't think the player himself was particularly bothered.
Another point is that those who say Owen signing for United was the same as Ince signing for Liverpool are wrong though, Ince was still at the top of his game, could have signed for a number of top level clubs at the time and was antagonistic to United through the media and no red will ever forget his cupped ear gesture towards the travelling support at the Anfield Road End in 99, which is why to this day despite his achievements Ince is still a hated figure at Old Trafford. With Owen, first of all, who would turn down Real Madrid? and he had the choice of Hull or Stoke before that phonecall from Ferguson, only a mug would have said no.

RE: the flak for Owen.
The reason he got soundly booed was for his refusal to do what Rafa wanted and stay/come back to the club and then go to the worst possible new home!
Yes, we all thought that Michael was a hero and yes, he pretty much won the 2001 FA Cup Final on his own, and yes he scored lots of goals for us, but he seems not to have been a true Red like Carra and Stevie - he chased money and spurious fame elsewhere, and made stupid career choices: it was widely reported at the time that when Rafa arrived at the club, Michael was asked not to go to Real, and Rafa is reputed to have even explained to him what a bad move it would prove to be for Michael.
When this proved to be so and he wanted to come back to the UK, Rafa wanted to buy him for less than he was being offered at, and tried to get Michael to play brinkmanship with him, against Real. He apparently asked Michael to wait until the 11th hour, 59th minute and 55th second before the transfer window closed, and then Rafa would do a cut price deal with Real.
Michael then turned down this offer, and the chance of playing Champions League football, etc, to go to Newcastle.
Turning Rafa down twice was never going to make him popular, and spurning the fans who so adored him early in his career wasn't going to help either, was it?
Then he made it worse by joining absolutely, positively the worst possible club he could have joined: fans would rather have seen him join even Everton than the Mancs - the depth of rivalry between us and they over the past 25 years particularly just makes going there the worst possible choice he could have made!

I read the blog twice - for the first and last time. No wonder football in the north-east is in a slump, again, if the average supporter is as alert, educated and as insightful as 'Robbo'. No standards to live up to and no aspirations to realise so the status of your team counts for nothing. Then you have the gall to make comment on clubs that are superior in every sense to anything you have ever experienced. Tramp blog from a tramp writer in a tramp area. Sad,

I can't believe how poor the whole utd team played, VDS pulled off a few saves, but was beat at the near post and a throw out was nearly very costly. I know that they haven't been playing great lately but it looked to me as if the whole team had an off day. Maybe the whole atmosphere got to them, that is why it is important for fans to get behind their team, every game. I never seem to hear any loud atmosphere coming across on the TV from Old Trafford, bar the odd big European games midweek. But my main point is that I haven't heard any football pundits, mention that maybe that Utd's Wed's night CL game in Russia and all the traveling involved maybe had a bearing on utd's display, I'll settle for either excuse, or both, as a neutral. Also if I was Rafa and a Pool fan, I would have been quite angry, that my team who threw themselves at every shot to block it, chased and harried the opposition, and flew into every tackle with a determination as though their lives depended on it, but yet for the past week have done neither. But the big question is, are they going to now carry on from here with the same intensity?

Yeah Collie your right, It,s just being an exiled gunner, I always seem to think about the Carling Cup as a glorified youth tournament, which ofcourse for most it isn't.

Of course we take it seriously ;) Harry had his best team out last year, sad thing was though a lot of our best players were cup tied for the final.
Mind tonight is looking like it'll be Tottenham Reserves vs whoever the hell Everton can coerce into donning a shirt for them tonight because of their injury list.
I say Tottenham reserves because we've Defoe still banned, Kranjar (sp?) cup tied, King and Woodgate out injured as well as Lennon and 'Arry's already said he's rotating the squad tonight.

I maybe a little late to the party but I have been thoroughly entertained by some of the comments I have read. I don't blame MO for signing for Utd considering the position he was in. NEVILLE SHOWS TRUE SPORTSMANSHIP
"The Manchester United captain's behaviour was described as 'a disgrace' by Daily Telegraph (ADAM) football correspondent Henry Winter in his match report of the game, with Neville accused of 'lecturing the linesman in-between goading lippy Liverpool fans'.
According to The Sun, controversy pursued Neville after the final whistle when 'he and fellow unused sub Jonny Evans tried to go through a post-match fitness routine. The pair were warming down in front of the United fans who had been held back after their side's 2-0 defeat. But a Reds steward felt Neville's presence might lead to problems with crowd control'.
The newspaper claims that it was only after 'a senior cop' intervened that Neville agreed to leave the pitch."

you're right, it was the mercurial striking talent of Dirk Kuyt that proved too much for Vidic, although i'd say the flailing hack (after the whistle) that he was booked for suggests a defender tormented.

I hardly think the booing of Owen was down solely to him joining United. Years earlier, he ignored all the faith we'd put in him and the money we'd spent developing him by running down his contract to leave very cheaply. That's why we disliked him when he was at Madrid. Then, when Rafa tried to buy him for Real, he turned us down for Newcastle because they offered more money. He is a mercenary if ever there was one in football.
I also disagree that a strong performance and victory against the current champions should make you think that Liverpool don't have enough to win the title. If anything, seeing as we dealt well with every corner and didn't rely on Gerrard for creation, not to mention the imminent return of Aquilani, should persuade you that we are on the up and just need consistency to mount a title challenge.

lazytim - As Sunday was Andre Marriners 1st ever top 4 game that he had taken charge of can we ask the obvious question of HOW THE HELL IS HE ON THE FIFA LIST.
He's only been a league ref for 6 years and a prem one for 4 so surely him being on teh FIA list is premature and indicates some form of favouritism towards him by the FA - who else is on there - Stuart Attwell teh guy who gave a goal against Watford that was nearer the corner flag than the goal

That replay did indeed show Torres tripping over his own heels but that was not the occasion when Evra got booked. between minutes 12 & 18
12 min: Evra clips Aurelio's heels, accidentally by the looks of things, conceding a free-kick about 40 yards from his own goal, right of centre. Aurelio sends the ball into the mixer but it's cleared.
13 min: Patrice Evra gets booked for a late lunge on Fernando Torres. Free-kick for Liverpool about 30 yards out on the right flank. "Forget massive, isn't this game the very definition of the made-up word 'ginormous'?" asks Jesse Galdston.
17 min: It's all Liverpool at the moment and I've just accidentally deleted a big chunk of text outlining exactly why. Curses!
18 min: From the aforementioned free-kick, Aurelio sent a left-footed dirve screaming towards the top left-hand corner. Van der Sar saved brilliantly, only for the rebound to drop for Dirk Kuyt at the near post. He shot straight at Van der Sar, who had somehow recovered from his original save to parry the follow-up. The rebound dropped for Kuyt again and this time he dinked a cross towards the far post, but it was too high for any of the Liverpool players queueing up to nod it home.

me i thort the eart balanced on the back of an infite pile of toroises; adam - in point of fact, creationism doesnt necessarily go "hand in hand" with religio because it depends on the degree to which different religious sects (CofE, Muggletonians etc) interepret the bible/koran etc. literally; creationists literally believe the earth was created in 4004bc - young earth theory - if "noone knows" the timescales involved, you'd better tell the creationists, because they think they do; some of the nuttier exponents, probably manu fans will even argue that fossils were planted there to test our faith. of course you cant prove or disprove this assertion with ref to the evidence.
evolution though is empirical and fits the facts (which is not of course to sy that it can't be falsified as all theory is by definition inductive) - your garbled account of mathmatical probablity would need to be demonstrated mathmatically - which you're clearly incapable of, old son.
by the way the muggletonians were a silly sect who, like you, were convinced they had immediate access to absolute truth but, unlike you, decided to keep quiet about it so died out in the 19thC.

Not sure why people seem so sniffy about this publication, I mean, on their website at least, the other day their was an article on Cameron Diaz being seen on a film set holding an umbrella!!! AND there was a picture to prove it, none of this made up stuff like in the Sun (allegedly).
AND if that is not highbrow enough, investigative journalism for you - they once had an article on how Dannii Minogue had put air in the tyres of a hire car all by herself! And to all you doubters out there, tehre was a picture of her doing so ...

16 Great double save from van der Sar. Aurelio's free-kick was going top left but he managed to paw that out and then Kuyt looked odds-on to steer the loose ball home but the big Dutchman saved with his feet. Kuyt then dinked the ball to the back post but Torres failed to control his shot. The Scousers should be leading.
15 Evra goes in the book this time after another poorly judged tackle on Torres.
13 Evra nicks Torres' heels to concede a free-kick 10-yards out side the box but Aurelio's delivery is easily cleared. This match is, unsurprisingly, being played at a frantic pace.

For a start I was flicking through the sports channels and the free Liverpool TV channel worked (I thought I’d had a special chip installed to block it to be replaced by a loop of Eric Cantona goals) and then when they finally showed it they used phrases like ‘he ran 40 yards’ and ‘pace’.
Does anyone know how to put back together generic digital recordy type things as mine is now in pieces oh and that second goal was never a penalty… ; ) prove otherwise…
