Greetings Programme - A Royal engagement

Did news of the Royal engagement leave you all misty-eyed and nostalgic this week? Probably not, but I'm sure that, like me, it brought back memories of a much earlier coupling, almost 30 years ago, when the young Lady Diana Spencer and the Prince of Wales, were joined together in holy matrimony on July 29, 1981.

I remember it well, as young graduates living in Edinburgh, we had the world at our feet - or so we thought, and four of us, firm friends - celebrated the day sunning ourselves in The Meadows. Job prospects weren't great - so nothing's changed - fashion was good, all legwarmers and headbands, and for some, pie-crust collars were all the rage, and the music was good.

Spandau Ballet, Duran Duran and various other new romantics, and songs like Smokey Robinson's "Being With You" or Randy Crawford's "You Might Need Somebody" were in the charts.

What music do you remember from that period - from that day even? Perhaps you too got married that year - what songs were special for you?

Let me know and we could play them on the show.

A great shame they did not choose a Scottish wedding as there were ample reasons for the happy couple to consider it. They met at St Andrews, have an affection for Scotland and the Scots but more importantly .. he gave her her Mither's engagement ring (& possibbly) a bonnie wee tartan shawl.

    Yours aye Cathy,

    Bothychiel.
