The Radio 4 Blog

The new Today website

You may be surprised to learn this but until now there have been two distinct homepages for the Today Programme. One sat within BBC News Online and another exists on the Radio 4 website.

Because of technical changes on News Online, from now on there will be only one homepage for Today – this one.

It will be your one-stop shop for all things Today Programme related: listening live and hearing the most recent seven programmes, downloading the podcast, Thought for the Day, contacting the team, seeing photographs, and finding the best clips.

We also plan to make the running order a more compelling online destination by including more links and comments from listeners that we receive via email and social media. We will also have more links to further information about the various stories featured on the programme. This is an example of Monday’s running order.

I hope you enjoy these changes even though we recognise that for some people they will mean a change of habit. We will be trying out a few different things in the coming weeks so do let us know what you think.

The webcam and the running order are both useful. Interviewees' discomfiture is highly enjoyable!

Please, please could we have the complete running order back? I also miss it desperately. I wanted to share an item from yesterday's programme with a friend and without it, the process is a lot more convoluted. Thank you.

@David Buxton - Thanks for that. I'll alert our tech team to the RSS issue you mention.

@Chillster - The set-up in the new studio is different from the old one but this is something we're looking at. Anyone else desperate to see pictures from the studio?

@jochensp, G Paul Turner , Rob - We are looking at how we address some of these issues.

I'm all for change, but it's a bit frustrating that the running order is revealed in a piecemeal fashion, whereas in the past the full, provisional running order was often made available between 7 and 7:30. Could the provisional running order be published earlier? Thanks!

Can we have the webcam back please? I know I should get out more, but I like to watch the activity in the studio as well as listen to it...

The new web page does not give the running order. Why is this? This now prevents listeners from choosing which articles they wish to listen to (which are not necessarily those you wish highlight in your abridged running order).

I am not happy with the new design. I need the complete daily running order and miss it desperately.

I'm posting this here since my messages to @bbc on Twitter and the website's technical feedback have been ignored.

The BBC RSS feeds (including that for Radio 4 and 4 Extra Blog) have a bug where the text is displayed as HTML markup. This bug was introduced 3 weeks ago. Please bring this to the attention of the web developers.

A longer explanation is here: https://gist.github.com/4509542

    Thank you,

    David

@Briantist - we try to make the image of each episode of Today reflect a major news story covered in the programme. Unlike the programmes you link to above Today has a rotating roster of presenter combinations. We use a photo of the studio as the default because there are currently no photos that feature every combination of Today Programme double acts.

Here's the images from the other radio networks in the morning... they all seems to manage something informative.
