Everything that was obviously wrong with your prediction at the start of the season is even more obvious now.

1. Aquilani would miss the start of the season.
2. Torres and/or Gerrard would be out of action for various periods.
3. Apart from these 3 players and Johnson, no other Liverpool player was worth a mention.

English football in particular and European football in general is much more competitive - with the league pyramid allowing well-run clubs (effectively small and medium businesses) to climb up the ladder and poorly run clubs slide down the ladder.

The problem is that the European football market is not open enough - which enables bigger clubs to use their dominant position within smaller domestic markets to to entrench their position in Europe and globally. I'm surprised that the European Union allows such anti-competitive structures - a reflection of the improper influence FIFA and UEFA, with their out-dated nationalistic outlook, have exerted on the EU.

Nuts County 00:29am on 25 Jul 2009 Sheffield FC, an amateur club, are the oldest non-university football club in the world. FIFA have have recognized the club as the oldest in the world. They celebrated their 150th anniversary in 2007.

Notts County are the oldest professional football club in the world.

Review of the week 00:05am on 24 Jul 2009 In December 2007, I asked:

"Why do these foreign/wealthy investors/consortia want to spend silly money on Premier League clubs?

Theyd get much better value with one of the Sheffield clubs, or Nottingham Forest or Leeds Utd."

I overlooked Notts County. Perhaps not so such a silly season after all.
