Cameron the Heathite? 00:47am on 23 Oct 2009 You forget that Heath's winning the postal strike began a series of strikes and his economic policies led to an incoming Labour government being saddled with economic woes which led directly to the Winter of Discontent- The Tories like to forget Anthony Barber as they like to forget Black Wednesday. Barber enforced 'pay restraint' which left Heath unable to govern. The Labour party then had to go to the IMF to borrow money to fill the black hole left by the oil crisis and the endless strikes exacerbated by Heath and Barber's policies. The IMF forced Labour to continue the Tory pay restraint policies and that was what led to the huge public sector workers' strike. When Ken Clarke talks about inheriting an economic mess from Labour governments, he must know that he is talking nonsense.
The post strike is just another disaster created at Executive level by Crozier et al. All the various private sector bosses brought in have lost the Mail business and money (remember the 'Consignia' fiasco) and have damaged labour relations. A cynic might suggest that this is the reason these people are brought in: to soften up the industry for private sale. Its what happened to all the other Nationalised Industries. Ask any postal worker and they will tell you they look for a decently remunerated redundancy package every year because the Post Office management are both ignorant of and contemptuous of the workforce. Each 'modernisation' has led to worse working conditions, tyrannical management: they feel disrespected and do not trust their managers- Normally long suffering,mild people, they seem to have reached the end of their collective tether. Sacking Crozier and his team would be the most affordable redundancies in the service.
The strategic significance of Salmond's speech 01:33am on 18 Oct 2009 This sort of speech could have been made any time in the 1920s! Since then, Globalisation whether good or evil has made Scottish independence an irrelevance. Whether or not Mr Salmond is aware, with fuel, industry, transport, water and banking at the command of our foreign competitors, the UK is not actually independent. If Salmond were to acquire all those labour seats, we would get a Tory Government at Westminster - they would not support independence. The Scottish people in general do not have any enthusiasm for independence. He might as well be demanding independence for Bethnal Green - his country's opinions would count as much in world affairs. It's clear that all Alex Salmond wants is power even if he gets a Pyrrhic victory by turning Scotland into a remote wasteland of country clubs and golf-courses.
Another gaffe 3:41pm on 09 Oct 2009 Not really surprising: your team have been striving so hard to make this empty PR man into Prime Minister that every aspect of your reporting has to continually repressed so your dreams of having swung the election don't slip out prematurely. If your team think Cameron's effort yesterday made him look like a statesman or a potential Prime-Minister, maybe you need to take those dreams to a couch somewhere and talk them through!
Can we afford the carriers? 11:20am on 21 Jul 2009 Of course we need the carriers. No doubt, if the generals alert that nice Mr Cameron, he can get up a head of steam telling Brown-Minor that the Navy needs more aircraft carriers in Helmland. We will also need more helicopters to lift them into the war zone as Gordon Brown hasn't yet built a canal or a sea port in the province. The Tories will do this at once and Young Osborne will finance it by reducing the number of biscuits served at the admiralty!
Tory plan to sanitise banks 11:16am on 21 Jul 2009 I thought the headline was 'Tories to satirise banks...' After all, putting the collection of old Etonians and Cameron clones who form the board of the bank in charge makes perfect sense to the 'Sir Herbert Gussetts' of this world. When they regulated the finance industries of course, Barlow Clowes, BCCI, Legal and General, Barings etc. were just minor oversights! What the city really needs is more chinless wonders in charge! Who says satire is dead!
Fixing the Have Your Say fault (2) 00:13am on 15 May 2009 Oh dear all that scintillating debate lost! Never mind, Central Office's network will soon be swamping the debates as usual!
It's never just 'bad news' first 01:01am on 23 Feb 2009 There is no doubt in most people's minds that the BBC political team have a permanent anti-labour bias. Whatever success this government achieves is drowned out by the chorus of sniping from Robinson, and Peston and by the sneering of Paxman and Maitless. Whenever there is an announcement about anything, the appropriate Tory or Lib Dem is interviewed to pour scorn while the government is often represented by reportage - as interpreted by and filtered through the editorialising of the team. The hundreds of hospital buildings, school replacements, regenerations and social initiatives are ignored in favour of crude anti-government sound-bites. In the only programme where the real public are allowed a say, David Dimbleby conspicuously barracks and heckles Labour ministers and allows Tories and Liberals to make crass statements and tell barefaced lies, completely unchallenged! When a quote is needed, the BBC calls on 'The Taxpayers' Alliance - a Tory front organisation or 'The Countryside Alliance' -another Tory front organisation (look up their patrons and executives if you doubt this). It is time the BBC tried to restore its credibility- I used to regard it as the acme of truth - now Auntie is the mother of liars!
Grammar test results 10:22pm on 02 Dec 2008 Sad really- the Beeb believe all that is wrong is a bit of bad grammar. To be fair that's where many of their traditional, middle-class audience are too. The installation of a groups of newscasters who cannot differentiate between retailing the news and editorialising, and interviewers who, instead of eliciting the facts, simply try to make politicians trip up and then spin their mistakes into a 'news' headline- that is the real problem. Its not whether they confuse 'refute' with 'rebut' its whether or not they can tell the difference between what the interviewee said and what they report him/her as having said. Some of them, Emma Maitless, David Dimbleby etc even have the impertenence to reverse the subject's meaning while he/she is still there! Time for the Beeb to find some principles!
VAT slip? 00:02am on 26 Nov 2008 This is exactly how a non-story begins. The pundits in the BBC newsroom produce questions about the Government's behaviour based on a discussion document as though the ideas suggested were Darling's or Browns. They know fully that the whole point of discussion documents is to examine a range of ideas and make choices. As the treasury is stuffed with Thatcherite dinosaurs, you'd expect some many of the secretaries and others to produce these ideas. The Tories, having no ideas of their own leap on this dumped idea as evidence that there is a black hole, whereas, the real black hole is then one Osborne is digging for himself and Cameron. As for the Beeb, serious political journalism seems to have died and been replaced by Daily Mail style sensationalism which gives then impression that the political team is a wholly owned subsiduary of Cameron's Neo-Cons!
PMQs row over Baby P 2:19pm on 13 Nov 2008 It is almost impossible to get an intelligent comment onto this blog, so many Daily Mail reading, Tory fellow-travellers pile in to heap condemnation on Brown without the slightest idea of the economic issues or any other. If anyone was caught out yesterday it was Cameron! He expected Brown to be oblique and fob him off, instead, the Prime Minister was annoyed by Cameron's careful attempt to make Labour look responsible for the situation in Harringey. Cameron said 'I don't expect to get an answer...' So why did he ask the question? because he wanted to make Brown appear useless by not answering instantly without the facts, as, no doubt, he would do! This was playing politics. Cameron also failed to check the facts of his tirade- the woman involved was not a teenager but a mature woman as were the other participants in this horror. Cameron is so used to gross generalisations on any issue that, even in this tragedy, he has to work in his crude 'broken society' ideas. Meanwhile, the Cons who swamp this blog are oblivious to World economics as they are to global politics in general. They call Brown our worst Prime Minister and an economic failure- that's not what the world thinks! That's why the Tories' lead has slipped. How soon before they realise that Cameron screeching across the floor of the House like the school bully he is, against the measured tones of Gordon Brown, is not a Tory asset. He will awaken the memories of even the most demented Tories to the days of Thatcher who wrote off billions from our economy, caused social devastation which we still live with, and made us the laughing stock of Europe!
