What has the Web ever done for us? 6:05pm on 14 Oct 2009 The web has enabled us to keep up with technological developments in farming, has helped us to diversify into contracting and waste management, helping other farmers comply with defra regulations. It enables us to access the CTS online database for animal movements - if you leave it to snail mail your passport applications can be rejected. My heart goes out to all the farmers who have to travel to libraries in cities to use the internet because they have no internet access at home. When the mail strike happens they will use valuable time and petrol, increasing their carbon footprint because the incumbent telco thinks dial up is good enough and won't supply broadband cos they ain't worth it.
What a lot the rural people are missing...
...so much for a digital britain, when a telco throttles and holds a country to ransom to protect an obsolete Victorian copper network. Tomorrows world will see fibre to every home. Once someone with some guts takes on the copper cabal.

I totally disagree with this closing remark on your post. It is wrong to say our infrastructure is 'just about' ready for mass IPtv streaming. People like you with good connections may be able to do it, but most of the country can't. Only people on cable or sat next to exchanges have a good enough connection, and even they would fall off if too many people tried to stream live content at the same time. You can't generalise in the way you did in that paragraph just because you have cable at your house. Most of us struggle to load pages let alone watch video. The audience would pay if they thought it was worth it or if there wasn't a cheaper or better alternative. You managed to insult a lot of people with that comment too!..

Digital music - who's making money? 09:25am on 08 Oct 2009 The answer will come. Established groups like napster will get a model that works. Until the copyright issue is sorted there will be confusion. While the producers of music continue to rip off the consumer and the artist the pirate sites will continue. Once it all levels out there will be a market for cheap quick downloads, free samples and higher price quality content. It will happen. We need a better broadband network in this country for it to be viable just yet. Only half the country can engage in downloads and streaming at present. Many are on crappy connections that don't support music. Or video. or anything more than browsing or emails actually. oops, going off topic again soz.

A big match for Broadband Britain 09:38am on 07 Oct 2009 Not a hope in hell for rural people to watch this match. Even people with good connections will struggle because of contention in the obsolete phone exchanges. Shame it isn't an important match and then we would get a taste of what is gonna happen at the olympics. Bit of a wake up call for building a digitalbritain that works if you ask me.
But nobody does. They ask Ofcom, who still insist that over 99% of the uk is connected to a DSL enabled exchange. ROFL. Connected with a phone they may be, but not to broadband. And Next Gen access will be a long time coming as the telcos continue to milk the copper assets instead of replacing with fibre. Time to nationalise and build the future for the next gen of kids, and to put the UK in the forefront and not in the slow lane. Break the copper cabal and sack the quangos. JFDI. You know it makes sense.

Iran's internet dilemma 11:34am on 19 Jun 2009 Interesting, it shows how people turn to the internet for information. It also shows how governments can try to stop that flow for their own ends. It also shows that people can always find a way to do something if they really want to. Hmm. The internet gives power back to the people.
Can Digital Britain top the league? 9:34pm on 16 Jun 2009 Gordon Brown promises to make us a world leader, and he lets a report go through that will make sure we are bottom of the pile not top. His digitalbritain team have obviously no idea about what real Next gen access is if they think for one minute that putting a tax on phones to pay for face plates and bits of new wiring is gonna make an obsolete copper network deliver what physics say it can't. For next gen you need fibre. end of. Surprised at you Rory for writing such an insipid post. Manchester is a pilot, it will always cost more to be the first, but at least they are doing something! BT have the ducts, they are half empty. They could use those ducts to get fibre to the areas that are unable to get decent broadband, and as you have visited many of them lately you know there are lots and the fact that none will ever get more than 2meg is a disgrace, and certainly not the digital britain that Gordon braggs about. You have missed the point if you think the levy can pay for next gen, it can only pay BT to do what it should have been doing for years. O and while I am on a rant one of the bbc reports online today are on about our network, and some of the facts they quote from BT are totally inacurate and out of date, whoever wrote it (no name and no comments allowed) wants firing. The era of the mobile reporter 1:26pm on 11 Jun 2009 nice to see new tech being used by reporters like Rory, too many still haven't grasped the advantages, and they are gonna be left behind in digitalbritain!
BT and the iPlayer 4:47pm on 10 Jun 2009 Its all a smokescreen to cover up the fact that BT can't deliver Iplayer to the public, the infrastructure can't cope. It takes half a meg to stream Iplayer. so 4 people on one line would have the line at capacity, assuming they were getting 2 meg which most aren't that is.
Most ISPs have between 50 or 70 customers on one line, so work it out for yourselves. Physics say it can't be done. The users say it isn't being done. The Carter team say a 2meg USO is sufficient for everyone by 2012. Who is gonna make them see sense? Keep rockin Rory, you will get through to the suits one day. 2meg can't cut it now, let alone in 2012.
