Britain's media obsession 12:00pm on 16 Jun 2009 Here we go again. Reading these blogs. Government is controlling us here, there and everywhere, including our thoughts. Has it never occured to any of those posters that if that is the case the government is doing an extremely bad job of it.
If you were just a few voices shouting against the crowd, with Labour having about 70% of the vote, I would say there was a problem. But everybody is against them.
The best example I have experienced in my life in this country of the state in total control was during the Thatcher years. That was the model with the government backed up by all the main media outlets. She fell when they withdrew their support in the late 80's. That was scary. You do not need to know what people are looking at on the internet to control them.
The fact is we are controlled and manipulated in our ideas and lifestyles. There are organisation that know a frightening amount about us, and it is not the government.
David Bain's Brain Strain 5:09pm on 09 Jun 2009 One of the advantages us humans have in the way we have developed is that our chances of survival are pretty high. When they are lowered to a matter of life or death many have reverted to cannibalism.
If for instance we are in a situation of no hope of rescue and starving to death, and a baby is born, then who would not be having that baby for breakfast.
The answer to that is quite a lot of us. The reason, cultural and religous. We are alone in putting our lives at risk, and ending them, for a higher purpose. Animals do not commit suicide out of despair for their situation. Most of us would bury the baby, then die a few days later next to it. Its a question of dignity, and as such is open to all kinds of inconsistancies.

I feel you are the paranoid one fearing the worst and furthermore you insult the people you call dissaffected by assuming they can be so easily manipulated.

Well as the saying goes Elliot, you don't have to fool all the people all the time and the extreme groups know this. How many examples from history do you need. It only takes enough to be manipulated and we have a problem, and are there enough? Well not yet, impossible to say how many enough is in this circumstance, but we certainly need to keep an eye on it.

A Marxist perspective would I suppose be that the Labour Party are enemies of the working class as they make them think they have some input into the political system that is in effect still run by the same old self interested elites. Whether you agee or not with that, the Labour Party has moved away from its grass roots support in search of 'Middle England'. The expenses scandal, while engulfing all parties, it was somehow expected of the Tories, but it was seen as a final betrayal by the grass root Labour Support. Who do they turn to? Who is talking to them expressing their fears. Usual suspects come out the woodwork of nationalism mixed with xenophobia and outright racism to fill the void.
Eurosceptics triumphant 08:50am on 08 Jun 2009 The collapse of the Labour vote is clearly dangerous for British politics. Disaffected working class voters channeling their anger into extreme fringe groups exploiting their paranoia.

For the sake of us all the Labour Party needs to sort itself out. I do not like where this is going

Well spotted kwinquark1. In hindsight not the best choice of word.

Experienced qualified people do a lot better at a job than inexperienced and unqualified people, except when they don't, and therein lies the problem.

But what any half decent club chairman knows, is its not only getting the best manager you can, but you must also have the best fit, the person that works within the culture of the club. It is the same as getting the right players. Get it wrong and no matter how good the manager is, it will end in tears. Clough at Leeds will I think be always the most stella example of that, but Chelsea and Newcastle have given us worthy examples this season.

Zola is not only a man with a brilliant football mind, but you can see how he seems to fit hand-in-glove with the culture at West Ham. Alan Shearer, for all his lack of managerial experience, understands the culture at Newcastle. Time is not on his side this season, but he may have to learn his trade in the Championship before bringing them back to the Premiership. It could be Shearer is a very good long term bet for Newcastle. I cannot see him leaving for a bigger club. Maybe their managerial merry-go-round has ended for the forseable future.

Owners/CEO's come in all shapes and sizes, some good, some bad. Some make shocking decisions then redeem themselves. The only consistancy is everybody seems to end up regretting employing Glen Roeder. Levy made shocking decisions replacing Martin Jol with Ramos. Redeemed himself poaching Harry Redknapp from Portsmouth. Some things are simply not straightforward as they may seem, and finding the right manager, whether in sport, or in commercial business, is one of them.
Jade Goody's disarming honesty 4:42pm on 23 Mar 2009 Jade Goody was certainly an enigma for people like me. On the one hand I loathed the celebrity culture she represented. Educationally a complete plank, she nonetheless had a certain savvyness about her. She successfully exploited the system and the public alike. Despite a very difficult upbringing in which she looked after her mother after an accident, she was ebuliant and had a love of life which as you say was endearing.

But to me, Jade Goody did not use her wealth to educate herself, as evidenced by her outbursts on Celeb BB. That was the behaviour of somebody who was still ignorant and uneducated. Bigotry and racism are the natural bedfellows of such people. Jade Goody simply learnt what was required to earn enough money the live the life of a celeb. She only addressed her ignorance and bigotry when it hit the bottom line. She then went grovelling over to India to 'learn about them'. Not good enough.

I agree with you about the cancer issue being a red herring in all of this. I have a sadness that this has happened to Jade, she did not deserve it. In the end she just an ordinary person making her chaotic way in a crazy world as we all do. But in the final analysis we must ensure that we have a culture where we value education, and understand that we can get the things we crave through that route, rather than the instant gratification of celebrity.

Are you an Office Evangelist? 2:21pm on 14 Mar 2009 Although I have not evangalised for any obscure TV shows, in my life I certainly have done so for a lot of bands. I put my friends onto Queen, Talking Heads, Stranglers, and Blondie before they broke. But I also told everybody that this band I saw in 1977 I think called Ultravox were rubbish.

Though now not quite so in touch with the latest music scene I put the younger generation in touch with some of the music of the old bands you never hear of these days.

The most successful is my evangalisation of the Sensational Alex Harvey Band. All my recordings are on vinyl, but the fact they are on Napster really helps. Biggest disappointment is my failure to push Nick Drake. Maybe I just don't meet the right kind of people?
The perils of Football League management 12:57pm on 01 Jan 2009 I think it is too easy to blame the 'I want it, and I want it now' culture that does to varying degrees exist.

Seeing a championship club can hit the pocket. Even I will not part with the kind of money required to follow a Premiership club. I do not know how most people do it. The football world, the players, managers live in a world that has little or no connection with the rest of us. It is the price they pay and I cannot see them giving it up very easily.

You part a man from a goodly chunk of his hard earned to see his team, he is going to want success.

A chairman comes in, a person usually having spent a while making his pile, to expect him to pour it into a bottomless pit of excessive wages, he is going to want success.
