Burnley high on emotion 1:58pm on 20 Aug 2009 I love how Phil is constantly being accused of either being a closet Man U fan or a closet Liverpool fan. Surely the man can't be both? ;)

No-one can really say this early on who is going to win the league, whether the teams will miss Ronaldo or Alonso, or whether Burnley will stay up, so all the debate on here is just hot air.

Congratulations anyway to Burnley - I'd love to see the underdogs stay up, and Owen Coyle seems like a great bloke too.
Robbo's Premier League predictions 12:47pm on 14 Aug 2009 I wish people would stop confusing facts and opinions! The season hasn't started but already people are claiming that they know for a FACT (it must be a true fact if you say so in CAPITAL LETTERS) that they know that a particular team will be champions/relegated/break the top 4 etc., or that certain players will be a success or missed by their former teams.

Drives me mad, it does. FACT.

Oh, the ever-so-insightful "Those who use Facebook are saaaaad" arguement, topped off with a 'hilarious' play on words. Farce-book! Great stuff.

This whole anti-Twitter thing is an example of the same phenomenon as e.g. a small group of people banging on about how great Apple is vs. a small group of people who bang on about how sad people who bang on about Apple are. It's so tedious.
Spotify - going mobile 1:20pm on 27 Jul 2009 I agree with some of the people here who say they'd pay a little each month to have no or less adverts, but not £9.99. That's just a bit too steep for me, if it was a fiver I'd probably go for it. The ads can be annoying, but not annoying enough for me to cough up £120 a year!

It's a shame that there's just the £9.99 premium rate and the free service, with nothing in between. I hope Spotify survives since it's very promising.
Stephen Fry on copyright 5:37pm on 14 Jul 2009 Although I'll admit to downloading stuff for free, I completely agree that ultimately artists should get paid for their music. (I justify it to myself that I only download music from artists who are already rich, and they if I download some of their stuff for free I'm more likely to buy a concert ticket or a CD of theirs). Otherwise, if nobody bought their music, then they might not be able to make a living as a musician and then there's no more music from them ever again!

The industry has totally dropped the ball with this though. DRM is horrible - if I've paid for music from iTunes, why can't I play it on whichever devices, software or computers I want, since I (should) own the mp3?! Instead, it becomes more tempting to download something for free that you can do what you want with, instead of paying for the same thing but where you're locked into using a certain brand of music player etc.
The old "you wouldn't steal a handbag" ads just shows how out of touch they were - patronising the very people who'd paid for their products!

I don't know what the solution is though, it's a tough one. That said, I've barely downloaded any music (free or otherwise) since I've been using Spotify. Maybe streaming is the way forward...if only they can start making money from it...

Big business as usual 10:11pm on 01 Jun 2009 This just shows how football is becoming increasingly distorted by money. I'm a Scottish football fan (Inverness Caley Thistle, for my sins), and I'm used to hearing about how the EPL is so superior to the SPL, and how the SPL is a mickey-mouse two horse race. Now, we can argue about the quality of Scottish football, but the EPL isn't much more of a 'competition'.

Basically, in the EPL, the top 4 almost always finish in the top 4, and the team that finished above Man U wins the league. No other team has ANY chance of challenging the top 4 unless they get bankrolled by a billionaire. Plus, at the bottom of the league, most of the teams that get promoted go back down again - and a lot of them yo-yo up and down. That is unless being starved of premiership TV revenue means that they go into big financial trouble.

In the meantime, the salaries and signing fees at the top keep rising, and more and more cash is squeezed out of the fans, whilst the same teams keep their stranglehold on the competitions.

Eventually we'll start to wise up and we might see a more open playing field (across all competitions) where the average fan isn't getting fleeced and huge sums of money aren't going to overpaid footballers and agents.

Or am I being a bit too optimistic? :(

I think the fact that he's never managed any of the 'big four' is the main reason he hasn't won anything.

They hoover up the bulk of the FA cups, and one of them always wins the league. That leaves the rest of the managers & teams to fight it out for 5th place and the Carling Cup (that no-one really wants that much anyway).

No carping about Kaka coup 1:23pm on 16 Jan 2009 I don't think you can compare Man Utd spending big money on Veron, Rooney and co. with City spending all this money on Kaka.

The big bucks that Man U have spent over the years have mostly come from the money the club generates from gates, sponsorship, merchandise and TV revenue. They are one of the biggest clubs in the world, so they can afford to pay for the best players...the club spent the money it earnt, it didn't get vast sums of cash from oil-barons to get where it is.

The likes of Man City and Chelsea on the other hand have become billionaire's playthings - their super-rich owners are playing a multi-million pound game of fantasy football! These clubs could never otherwise attract the likes of Kaka.
