Refuelling the motor industry 2:58pm on 27 Jan 2009 Funny how they let Rover die in 2005, isn't it?
I guess that political expediency must be the order of the day now, given this change of heart. Maybe if government departments had bought more British cars rather than fleets of French and German cars then our motor industry might just not have needed bailing out to this extent.
Bat out of hell 08:56am on 19 Jan 2009 Ken Clarke's return to frontline politics is well overdue, it's just a shame that he hasn't been appointed Shadow Chancellor.
Nevertheless he is one Tory that Labour really do fear, Ken will no doubt give Brown and Mandelson constant nightmares between now and the next election.
Politics just got interesting again.
Nationalising Tories 09:35am on 12 Jan 2009 #2, I agree 100%. David Cameron has said that a future Tory government would encourage thrift rather than materialism.
Just what we need after the boom and bust of the Bliar/Brown era.
Young and unemployed 11:14am on 28 Dec 2008 #82, you are correct. I didn't go to University. As you say, University is a place for learning. But it makes one wonder what exactly is being learned when someone can complete a university level education and fail to know how to use basic English grammar. I'm actually glad I didn't go, a degree isn't worth what it was a few years ago. I have a good job and can string sentences together so it's all good.

I'm not trying to be complacent here, but what employers are looking for is not necessarily reams of academic qualifications, but the ability to use correct grammar and spelling, a willingness to work hard and some experience of actually doing the job at hand and a willingness to learn.
Adopt the right attitude and there are jobs out there, even in the current climate.
Young and unemployed 11:27am on 27 Dec 2008 #1 I agree entirely. In the case of K.H.Z. that person seems to think that the world owes them a living just because they happened to go to 'Uni'.
That attidude and their apparent unwillingness/inability to use proper English grammar instead of the sloppy txtspeak displayed is hardly likely to send the job offers flooding in.
It's hard to believe that K.H.Z underwent a University level education and the result is the routine use of such sloppy grammar.

Park life 12:10pm on 24 Sep 2008 I couldn't help but think that the author was himself having 'an easy dig at Americans' himself, judging by the tone of this article. But as Peter_Sym said above, most of them take care of their homes as best they can and get along together, whereas many of our council estates are places where no-one gives a damn and which often look like war-torn Beirut.
And yes, what exactly *does* Obama stand for? Not unlike our own Gordon Brown, who makes up policy on the hoof, viz. the 10p tax climbdown, and the raft of recent 'initiatives' from them, such as 'help' for the housing market and with fuel bills.
What's said and what's not 5:07pm on 26 Jul 2008 After 4 defeats in Crewe, London, Henley and now Glasgow, the desire for change is gathering pace here in the UK, much in line with the trend in Europe where people have woken up to the fact that Centre-Left governments are useless and are voting them out.
Labour really are between a rock and a hard place, they know that if Brown is still in charge at the next Election, they'll lose.
Equally they can't risk the internecine divisions that a leadership election will inevitably cause.
As Nick Robinson rightly points out, the Public will not be impressed with a Labour Party that's looking inward. A further erosion of support for Labour would be the likely result, so whichever way you look at it I think personally that Labour are (thankfully)doomed at the next Election.
