  We are losing our understanding of what being a free people is these days, the old laws are now being superseded with haste and we're being given limited undefined rights in exchange for a 1000 years worth of struggle and legal precedents defining what Liberty and Freedom should mean.
  
  No government (servant of the people) should have a policy of treating all it's citizens and their offspring as potential criminal suspects by default.

  Is a 5 year Chairman or Chairwoman of the Council of Ministers a good thing ?
  
  Well it's my understanding that a Chairperson decides what's on the agenda at meetings , examples of this are found in private companies , boards of trustees and of course in our own cabinet system of government with the Prime Minister being the Chairperson.
  
  So even if member states take it in turn to have their own person as chairperson of the Council of Ministers, which I doubt will happen , a full rotation of all 27 nation states will now take 135 years.
  
  I have to say I preferred the old solution , so each nation state , large or small, would take it in turn every six months to push their own agendas, with a full rotation period being 13 years.
  
  The full powers of this 5 year chairperson will only come clear over time, as current and future council decisions will set precedents, e.g. what we call constitutional instruments. You only have to look at how other commonwealths or unions have developed over time to see how this leads to more centralizing of powers for the chairperson.
  
  I can only conclude that the Lisbon Treaty has changed how we are to be governed and therefore was more than a mere tidying up exercise as proclaimed by some.
  
  OT slightly, but still on the effects of the Lisbon Treaty being enacted.
  
  Was the EU and the Republic of Seychelles SOFA (Status of Forces Agreement) signed on the 11th of November it's first use of the EU's new legal status, was this not a historic EU event ?
  I did not see it in the main media , so I nearly missed it.

  I visited east Germany 6 months after the wall was broken , the place was in a sorry state compared to the west, it was like entering a time warp and going back 30-40 years. Maybe the fear of being spied on, being denounced and being sent for re-education or worse, the endless propaganda, the restriction of information helped cover up its total economic failure for many years.
  What I took away from the visit was that the economic disenfranchisement of peoples labour is not only morally wrong, but wrong in practice too, the state does not always know best and should never be entrusted with the total wealth of a peoples.
  This I conclude is why our forbearer's demanded that the executive must seek consent from Parliament for it's financing, rather than it being a god given right to tax people. Problem is something seems to have gone wrong in recent times.
  
  I wish the eastern nations well in their restoration of their democracies and freedoms , guard them well.

  Sadly there is noway to eliminate all risk, I could go out one morning and never return home due to a car accident or be robbed and killed or become a victim of a terrorist attack, anyone saying otherwise is not thinking with a clear head.
  
  All we can do is try and reduce risks, but things don't always work out how we wished they had ,specially in a complex war zone.
  
  My condolences to the bereaved, but no words I may utter will diminish their loss.
  
  
  Lisbon Treaty Referendum
  
  I can't see how there could be a referendum on Lisbon after it's ratification and it becoming law in all 27 nation states. After all, it was a amending treaty, any post ratification referendum would have been by it's very nature a In or Out EU referendum, something that was never promised.
  
  If anyone broke their 2005 manifesto promises, it was the party in power (NuLabour), they had the votes in Parliament to enable a referendum , they chose to vote against holding a referendum.
  
  Makes me think what NuLabour has in store for us next.

• Changing Britain's relationship with Europe 2:48pm on 29 Oct 2009 It's worrying that so many Eurocrats and Europhiles wilfully forget the well known principles of democracy, “Governed by consent”, “The will of the people”, “Mandate”, in their head long dash for superstate status and all the grandeur that they imagine this will bring.
  
  But you can not build a castle upon sand, it needs foundations of rock, and that in any political context is only given by the democratic will of the peoples of Europe.
  
  The Tories should stick to their guns on this fundamental issue, otherwise the precedent has been set and the basic principles of democracy right across Europe will have been weakened, which is not only dangerous to ourselves , but also our neighbours.
  
  The silly thing is , if the Eurocrats had not lost patiences with the people in their gold rush for superstate status and grandeur, they could have persuaded the people of Europe to support some kind of superstate , either federal based or sovereign states working together, it was all there for the taking, but they could not wait and have made the current process seem illegitimate by many.
  
  Of course all this then lends itself to the argument that if these Eurocrats made such a basic misjudgement over democratic legitimacy, then what other misjudgements have they made in the Treaty itself ?
  
  This issue is not going to go away !

  Oldnat , I suggest there is a problem with overpopulation in England , projections from a 2008 HoL report -

  Now I hear NuLabour waffling on about sustainability in other areas of policy , but they seem to have a idealogical problem in confronting this reality (I am being nice to them , not that they deserve it in my humble opinion , but there you go).
  
  But think about the problems of over population can bring ?
  Maybe like me you think people living crowded together in ever smaller homes leads to social breakdown, unaffordable housing , more anti-social behaviour , more traffic jams , less competitive business (less jobs), more state intervention needed to correct the problems , more taxes needed to pay for it etc
  
  I don't think the people of England are racists in anyway , I think they are very welcoming and tolerant, that's probably why 99.7% of all net international immigration since 1991 to 2006 felt they would like to make England their home rather than other parts of the UK.
  
  And as for fearing an imminent threat from the BNP with their 3% showing the polls is really silly (but I think some profit by this), but I suppose if the main parties (specially the one in power) don't act , things will just get worse on this front.
  
  Anyway , QT will be funny tonight even if it does not talk about issues in any real detail.

  I couldn't work it out , but there again maybe I missed the nuances of disagreement between them.
  
  Here is Lord Moncktons views , he seems to hold a clear difference of opinion on the issue.
  
  Anyway, I figure I can not be alone in thinking there is more to this subject than I am being told , why else would our government spend money on what some people might call propaganda ?

  This is only my personal view , but didn't most of those suffer from socialist (wreckers) infiltration ?
  
  I do hope Royal Mail and it's workers do not make the same mistakes , I personally would like to see it beat all it's competition and stay majority owned by the State, with the other part being owned by the workers own pension fund.
  As the UK workers of Nissan and Honda (and many others) have shown , our workers can be efficient quality workers that enable their companies to compete with the best and make a profitable return for it's shareholders.

• Monday 5 October 2009 11:05am on 06 Oct 2009 It is strange NN is suddenly so interested in the Lisbon Treaty , seen they have held many a "What went wrong with NuLabours popularity ?" discussions and focus groups over the past year and yet I do not recall it mentioned once that it might have been NuLabour reneging on it 2005 manifesto commitment to hold a referendum on the Lisbon (Constitution) Treaty.
  
  Getting to the point thou' ,unless I am very much mistaken the Lisbon Treaty has still not been ratified in all 27 nation states (that's right I said "Nation States") of the EU yet, so why should the Tory policy to hold a referendum change until that reality changes ?
  
  As for NuLabour announcing a public sector pay freeze , well was it news management or were the markets getting a bit wobbly with NuLabour debt mountain and some show of dealing with it was needed ?
  
  On a topic of the Independents headline today of the Dollar being dropped for oil purchases by some countries ,did not Peter Schiff predict this two years or more years ago ?
