Winter Olympics - where anything can go wrong 11:41am on 14 Nov 2009 I tend to focus on the ice hockey during the winter olympics preferring team sports but always find myself distracted/intrigued/fascinated by other events, curling, luge, and most memorably figure skating.

A sport at its peak can entrance anyone. I don't like figure skating normally but the one time it did hook me in was the 1998 Nagano victory by Ilia Kulik. To me it is one the best example of sporting excellence. Leading after the Short program, Kulik skated a free skate of hyperbole after hyperbole as expressed by the commentators. Having little knowledge of skating I thought it was the usual overstatement that too many commentators are guilty of. I then learnt how right they were and how privileged I was too watch Kulik. As the program went on Kulik's competitors one after another under pressure to compete with his display tried to match his exploits and failed, again and again. You can only appreciate the best when you have seen the dross and whilst his competitors weren't that bad Kulik was the best and he showed it.
England understudies can shine in Qatar 7:24pm on 13 Nov 2009 Kieran Gibbs has played 11 games for Arsenal. 11. He hasn't been outstanding, he's been okay. He can't dislodge a poor Clichy from the side.

Warnock was Blackburns best player last season. Is first choice left back for Villa and has been playing first team football for a decade.

Baines was outstanding for Everton. Came up through england u-21 and is also first choice left back for Everton.

Both Baines and Warnock are miles ahead of Gibbs but it can only be top four/Arsenal hype that suggests an inexperienced fledgling youth who hasn't been amazing in every game he has played be put forward for England.
The two sides of Lionel Messi 7:18pm on 02 Nov 2009 I don't get this Veron praise. Apart from what was essentially the only bit of intelligent play in the whole game Veron was atrocious against Uruguay (and all he did was take a shot from a different angle). Argentina actually held the ball well, for periods of the game Uruguay didn't get a touch. But the one player failing this was Veron who was supposed to supply creativity in the midfield. Instead the strikers had to drop deep to get a touch only to turn and be confronted by a mass of Uruguayan defenders. Mascherano was more progressive than Veron.

Personally I feel Maradona should treat Messi as a wildcard. Someone that may or may not produce a bit of magic that may turn a tight game. Otherwise the rest of team actually has the basis of a team that has a system of play. It holds the ball very well and n the games I have seen Argentina play they have consistently created chances from their wide men. A midfield of Mascherano and one or two midfields that can pass well to supply some good wide men in Di Maria, Datolo, Rodriquez, Gutierrez.

One question. I'm glad Ansaldi has been picked, presumably on the back of his performance against Barcelona. Is there any chance others plying their trade in eastern europe may get a look in?
Nutt gets the sack 6:03pm on 30 Oct 2009 I am actually curious as to who people feel should decide if Professor Nutt is up to his job. Another academic or the Home secretary. I am quite happy the government has made a decision. They think he is wrong and have sacked him. if you agree or disagree you can make your views clear at the polling station.

Also people who keep bringing Alcohol and Tobacco into the debate conveniently ignore the fact banning either is not possible and is doomed to failure. They are so ingrained in our culture. No other drug is and something can therefore be done about it.
Is primary education threatened by authoritarianism? 8:49pm on 16 Oct 2009 Have to say I'm on the side of the Government on this. Having had experience of one teacher who was later sacked for incompetence and another who was the poster-boy of the anarchic left I don't really trust teachers to police themselves.

There is an argument that Government should only get involved when things go wrong, but given both the fact school helps define a persons future and it can be awhile before it is apparent something is wrong I would rather not take the risk.

Maybe lessen the burden of tests and reports but I wouldn't go to far in the other direction.

One other thing, people say that politicians are untrustworthy, say what people want hear, etc. But politicians are accountable to us, alot of supposedly trustworthy bodies like the media and teachers aren't. I trust a politician more.

Indian cricket resists drug code 1:04pm on 05 Aug 2009 You work 365 days a year. Between 0600-2300. If you miss three appointments thats it.

I take the example Nadal gave. He was just out with his friends. These people have lives outside of sport. Families and friends. A job that that impinges on people's personal life to the point where everything they do has fit around making time for a random drugs test.

Also Fifa hasn't signed up regardless of what Fahey may claim. They have agreed to limit the number of players who will be required to detail their whereabouts every day during the offseason.

Find a different way. I refuse to accept a rule that treats sportsmen and women as criminals is the only way to eliminate drugs in sport.

For that matter given a choice between drugs in sport or crimininalising competitors I would rather live with the drugs.

And lastly if this is the best anti-drugs initiative that WADA can come up with, then replace WADA with a better more humane body.

If you think this rule is universally accepted elsewhere think again.

Indian cricket resists drug code 11:17am on 05 Aug 2009 I'm going to take this from a different viewpoint. I am all for BCCI standing up to the bully that is Wada. WADA is like the policemen who abuses his authority to show everyone how important he is and not to ignore him or else.

The argument that other sports have accepted the code just tells me they have caved in to WADA's bullying. The BCCI's responsibility is to its players and its sport not others.

The requirement to give your whereabouts for an hour a day, 365 days a year is not a reasonable requirement. The amount of money they earn is irrelevant as this rule applies to every sportsmen whatever their income. It is an invasion of privacy that borders on big brother type surveilance, and if the public are that bothered about sport in drugs to the point they would infringe sports men and women human rights, they may want to consider whether they would prefer a different, more controlled form of entertainment like a computer game (no doping of players there).

To all advocates of the whereabouts rule. How about you live under these rules for a year and see whether you feel it is reasonable.
