Grafite poses threat to Man Utd 11:22am on 28 Sep 2009 benedictsamuel - good thinking but I doubt if Hargreaves will ever kick a ball again for Man Utd. as it seems there is no way back from his injury. I really question why Ferguson signed him and said so at the time as it was known then that he had a serious injury but of course in those Man Utd. had as much money as they wanted so 15 millions did not matter. It must be a little worrying for Man U. fans that it takes and old-timer like Giggs to come on and get them out of trouble. Where are the new boys like Nani and Anderson? Looks like more wasteful buys by Ferguson.
Liverpool hope for power surge 5:59pm on 17 Sep 2009 The criticism of Gerrard this season is unwarranted. He has already hit some spectacular goals and contributed to many and without him Liverpool would be much the poorer.

I'm not a Benetiz fan and feel that given the money he has been given to buy players he should have won the Premiership many times over. However he just discards players like they cost not a penny.

Liverpool have had a run of easy games, I still they will struggle, Johnson in particular, when they meet some better quality outfits.
Del Potro sets seal on memorable US Open 1:47pm on 15 Sep 2009 I hope that Del Potro and Murray sort out their differences quite soon, or at least the Argentine has the decency to apolgise for the unpleasant things he said about Andy's Mother. That said he was in majestic form against Federer, who looked as if the twins had kept him awake all night, particuarly in the 5th set.

Murray - still can't see him winning a Grand Slam unless he changes his style. Time after time against Cilic he had chances to slam the ball down the line but instead we had the half-hearted powder-puff return waiting for his opponent to make a mistake. He would not have lived with Del Portro had they met in the quarter-final, so it was probably a blessing in disguise that he lost to Cilic. Does he have to always 'towel down' after EVERY point played? It is so boring as is his continual 'yawning' when he is losing. The boring British press, as they do time after time, had Murray winning this tournament but he never looked remotely like getting near the final. No doubt they will now have the young girl Heather Watson as a future Wimbledon champion, and we will get all the hype like we had after Laura Robson's win at Wimbledon.

Great to see a non-Williams sister in the final, and Seerena really showed her true 'form' with her shocking outburst of foul language and temper when she lost to Clijsters. Then her reluctancy to initially apologise fully was deplorable and confirmed what we all suspected of her.
Dunga shows way to Maradona 7:03pm on 14 Sep 2009 To the person who said they felt 'sorry for Argentina and Maradona' I can only say you should never feel sorry for a cheat and drug user. He sat no examples to anyone, unlike the greatest ever, Pele.

To beckenhamred- quite right about Bobby Charlton - great player but usless Manager. Not many realize that he was so embarrassed getting Preston relegated that he put his boots on the following season and played until Easter when he then retired again, permanantly. He could not see that Preston had the worst goalie ever to pull on a shirt but Charlton kept playing him game after game.

Why Maradona as Manager? It is the Argentine culture. They are very passionate about their 'heroes' but also immature in many respects and an example was, in the 1970's to make the widow of former President Peron, the new President, after he died. The Country dissolved into corruption and ended sadly with a Military coup in which thousands of innocent people were killed.

Alanlo -it will not be easy meat like Trindad that Argentine will play if they finished 5th. It will be either Honduras or Costs Rica, slightly tougher opposition. The USA are virtually qualified and Mexico after being bottom (with Eriksson), are now second (wisely without Eriksson)and on a roll, and almost sure to go to S. Africa, which leaves Honduras and Costa Rica fighting it out for the 3rd automatic place. You would have to fancy Argentina but with Maradona at the helm anything could happen. Beware!

The facts are that 40 years ago when you attended a World Cup you found that 99% of the several hundred accredited journalsits were there to report on the games and for no other reason. Now at World Cups there are thousands of journalists accredited and probably 30-40% of them are actually news reporters who are just looking for stories for the news pages. Some rush straight to the main square in town hoping to get a 'confrontation' story to send back.

I've actually seen photogaphers 'set-up' a photgraph of English fans looking drunk in a railway station with a few bottles of booze. Their excuse was that it had been so quiet and so little trouble that they needed a photograph to warrant their attendance at the World Cup.

I wish that FIFA would say 'No' to these journalsits and refuse their accreditation but it is not going to happen and it is likely to get worse, not better.

Let's not forget that 40 years ago everyone whispered about the Press 'sisters' from the USSR, but nothing happened until one day gender testing was introduced at the Olympics, and the Press sisters went home hurriedly and were never heard of again. On other occasions female athletes complained about the 'lady' using the toilets as 'she' stood to do a pee as opposed to sitting down, but everyone turned a blind eye.

Thankfully something is now being done to try and avoid similar incidents and while I have every sympathy for Semenya it is the South African authorities who are the real villains in this as they were told not to take this person to Berlin, until tests were carried out, and they ignored the advice in their greed to get a gold medal from somone who improved their 800m time by an incredible 7 secs in less than a year. That says it all.

We should not be condemning the IAAF we should be condemning the South Africa Athletics Board or whatever it is called, because they put this unfortunate person in this position by not heeding prior warnings from the IAAF. In their greed to win a gold medal they subjected this unfortunate human to world scrutiny and now have subjected this person to the embarrassment of having the world know what the results of medical tests are. The interview which I heard on 5 live with the South Africa Sports Minister was deplorable as he blamed everyone else except his own Country for this situation. Screaming that they would wage war indicates a lack of professionalism and little respect for this unfortnate person who is at the centre of this affair.

Now you don't do that unless something is amiss. If she/he is not taking drugs then how the heck can you take manage to improve that fast that quickly?
The South African Federation is adopting a very stupid stance and they should have observed the IAAF's request prior to the World Championships not to send this runner until thorough checks had been carried out and then much embarrassment, particularly to the person, would have been avoided. Even now they are threatening the Governing body of athletics. That is most upsetting and unwarranted.
Capello can plot World Cup glory 12:20pm on 10 Sep 2009 I was amazed that Bilic did not play more on the Johnson whose tackling ability is well known to be faulty in the extreme. He was at fault with Croatia's goal being turned inside-out and allowing the cross to come in. Why Pranjic did not attack Johnson more down the left was a mystery.
England got away with this weakness last night but I just can't see the Spanish, Dutch (both Robben & Babel gave Johnson the run-a-round in Amsterdam) Brazilians, French (if they qualify) not playing on this weakness. Yes, Johnson looked great going foward, crossed a beautiful ball for the goal and ran well with the ball, but he looked a liability when under pressure. Chris Kirland for keeper as he is the only one of the lot who is confident at coming off the line and grabbing the ball safely and not 'flapping' at it.
Capello can plot World Cup glory 09:17am on 10 Sep 2009 Phil - a couple of points. First of all Beckham must now say 'goodbye' to the squad. Lennon is currently number uno with Walcott on stand-by and Wright-Phillips also available, so where does that leave Beckham, who just never takes on or beats anyone nowadays. How great to see an England winger (Lennon) actually running at the defenders.

Let's not forget that Englands defence looked decidely second-rate against Holland not so long ago. Fortunately the Dutch defence with Oojer and Heitinga in particular were equally poor hence the 2-2 draw.
Green is still not convincing in goal and Glenn Johnson was suprisingly not really tested against Croatia until he allowed the winger to turn him inside-out and cross the ball for the only goal. Bilic made a big mistake by not playing on Johnson's weakness in tackling.

Argentina in deep trouble and I have NO sympathy at all.
Maradonna implicated GOD when he cheated in 1986, when he could have admitted to the referee that he had handled the ball. Now GOD is seeking his retribution on Maradona so the finality is that the AFA must dispense with Snr. Diego and rescue their fading hopes in the last 2 games and hope for a play-off place, probably against Costa Rica.

Ridiculous suggestion. It's a bit like people wanting Gerrard left out of Liverpool when they have a few bad games.

Why was Maradona given the job, people ask? It is the mentality of the Country I'm afraid. Much in the same way as back in the 1970's they joyously welcomed General Peron's politically inexperienced wife as President, after he died. This lead to corruption, left wing activists and sadly eneded in tears with a Military Coup which resulted in thousands of people disappearing. It is the Argentine way. But even if they finish 5th in the table I'm sure Argentina will be too good for Costa Rica or Mexico who currently lie 4th and 3rd in the CONCACAF section. The 4th team there plays the 5th team in South America.
