Being regularly in the knockout stages and losing on penalties is a darned site nearer than Scotland have ever been. If England has mastered the anti-football of penalties and say had Germany's record at it then we would have at least 1 major tournament to our name by now.

I'm not slating anyone,

I was just pointing out than England are not as good as the media think they are.

I was actually baffled at the slating Sven used to get. His achievements in tornaments were pretty good. But why was he slated, because he was foriegn, plain and simple!

England is not the be all and end all in terms of how the game should be played. Maybe if they learnt from foreigners like you seem to suggest, then they may well have done better. There's no denying England have had quality players in the past and missed their chance. Perhaps because those quality players were just not good enough.

You dont need to tell me Scotland have little or no chance of qualifying for anything; but I think you'll find I wasn't having a go for the sake of having a go. I put a good point across; the players are not good enough to win and maybe the media should acknowledge that fact when the tournament gets going or at least be realistic.

If England win three warm up games in late May, the S*n and Mirror will have England lifting the world cup and you know it.

Yes England do have some other very good players but take out 3 of the 6 I mention through injury then I believe they will struggle.

Lennon is a good player but can flatter to decieve, Joe Cole great player but is injury prone and goes missing. Heskey, hmmm. Defoe?

I just don't think England have enough. There's nowt wrong with bigging up a team, I'd be doing it if Scotland qualified but I'd know there wasn't a chance of doing anything. Maybe the English media should let it ride and get excited if they reach the semis. We both know that's not going to happen, (rthe media keeping quiet I mean).

I'd love to see England do well but I just can't see it for footballing reasons.
England get luck of the draw 10:55am on 05 Dec 2009 he draw has been kind to England and I fully expect them to qualify from the Group. However, apart from Rooney, Gerrard, Lampard, Terry, Cole and Rio if he's fit, where are the rest of the World class players?

I'm afraid it's another media 'dream' of England winning the World Cup. Maybe one day, the media will get real and it'll sink in that England are no where near good enough to win a World Cup.

Of course when they fail, I wonder who will cop the flak. My bet is the foreigners in the English game. We'll have another out-pouring of xenophobia,conveniently forgetting that apart from 1990 England have done nowt in WC finals since 66. In addition, there were virtually no foreigners in the game in 74, 78 or for that matter 94.

I wonder if the usual jingoism will be seen in the press and should England face Germany; it's a disgrace!

Wenger finds defeat hard to swallow 2:20pm on 03 Dec 2009 Phil, I agree it hasn't been a good week for Wenger and he has made some strange statemets.

In an ideal world sportsmanship would rise above petty squabbles, however, we are all human and if someone was swearing at me, I doubt I could rise above it.

Someone pointed out earlier that it would have been hypocritical of Wenger to shake hands, I agree. Any handshake would only have been done to appease Sky and BBC pundits, sometimes making a point is the right thing to do. It seems Mr Hughes's behaviour is fine, four letter words are okay for our kids to see and hear but the lack of a handshake is the worst possible things our kids could ever witness.

Don't get me wrong Sportsmanship is hugely important but I think you should amend your blog to examine why Wenger refused.
Wenger finds defeat hard to swallow 1:52pm on 03 Dec 2009 I originall commented that I thought Wenger's comments were disrespectful but the handshake or lack of it can and should be excused in the heat of the moment.

After reading that Hughes consistently swore at Wenger, one post stating they were the worst words that can be used; I think Wenger was right to snub him and I can now understand his comments afterwards.

Phil, having read those posts do you still feel Wenger was out of order? Would you listen to profanities in the office, then shake the person's hand at 5.00pm at the end of work, no, you wouldn't.

I've changed my opinion Phil, are you still sticking to yours?

I think the comments about the Carling cup and about not shakining hands in the post-match press conference were far more disrespectful than not shaking hands ij the first place. We do things in the heat of the moment and maybe not shaking hands can be smoothed over with an apology and a shared glass of wine later.

But, to qualify his behaviour with the comments he made is disrespectful to the Football league and other managers that do not throw hissy fits after games by not shaking hands or hiding in toilets.

Maybe when you journos do your constant character assasiations on certain managers you may remember that those castigated are usually the most sporting and actually come out and talk to you guys afterwards. Just a thought Phil!

I think you'll find I was initially responding to a post made by a Utd fan about Liverpool's academy and also pointing out the flaws that I felt were in Phil's blog.

No need to keep my head down mate, I don't run scared of bad performances like Ferguson and Redknapp. The two most slavered over managers in the country!

They're good prospects but very young. I'd say any of them have as much chance of making it in the first team as any of those Utd younguns on display last night.

Phil, 'unfulfilling' is probably an understatement. However, his time back at Spurs doesn't have to be down to his stint at Liverpool. Perhaps he wasn't the player we all thought in the first place?

Isn't a year a bit too long to be blaming it on his time at Liverpool?

What are you on about? Parry had nowt to do with the academy either!

No players came trhough because the academy wasn't up to scratch, both staff and players.

Rafa now has control over it, where previously he had no say on staff or players. Do you not think that's a bit strange. I'm pretty sure SAF had an input to who come and went at Utd's academy. Now rafa has been able to appoint his own staff, ie Dalglish and the ex Barca youth team coach that brought the likes of Messi through. Things are now beginning to bear fruit.

The reason Warnock (not Gerrard) was the last player broght through "iverpool's academy is that Liverpool FC and the academy have been as good as 2 seperate entities since its inception.

That has now changed! Rafa wanted control of the academy in his contract wranglings: he got it. Now we have the likes of Spearing, Darby and Eccleston on the fringes of the first team and on the bench. More will come through, hopefully the likes of Tom Ince and david Amoo will get a chance. Apart from Amoo, these are all fairly local players,
